I am very disappointed that you jumped straight to conclude that the 140W PD charging here is part of the USB PD 3.1 EPR when it is likely not. According to Lenovo own's User Manual, the specs for 140W charging is 20V 7A, which is out of any USB PD 3.1 140W specs, including EPR specs. The 140W USB PD 3.1 EPR specs is at 28V 5A. No specs of the USB PD 3.1 allows any higher than 5A of current. This implies that, again, only Lenovo proprietary GAN charger would be able to reach 140W Type C charging. Other aftermarket charger would likely only see maximum 100W charging.
I was surprised and glad that he was honest about that. It's crazy that Lenovo would actually send out previous models, knowing it downgraded the new machine's build quality.
Great review, just two comments on the specs. The 13900HX has 24 cores, 32 threads, not 24 threads as indicated here. The 24 threads is for the 13900H not used on the Gen 8. Also, I believe Windows Hello is not possible on the Gen 8 as it has no IR sensor which is unfortunate, but not something that will bother me too much. I prefer no frills and loads of power. As far as I can tell it offers the best value proposition. With the excellent cooling it outperforms many other 4080 laptop offerings coming close to some of the 4090s available on the market now. After a week of researching all that is out there I've placed my order for the pro 7i.
Legion owners: Did you do it? (Refresh the Legions with RTX 4000 GPUs?) Lenovo: Yes. Legion customers: What did it cost? Lenovo: Everything... Legion customers: 🤨
The new one apparently has a plastic trackpad instead of glass. If true, that's a significant downgrade. Also, I don't believe the new one has Windows Hello. Can you confirm?
IMO too many corners were cut. Not worthy of the Pro designation. Why drop the lighted rear port markings? Why drop the 2nd TB4 port? Why drop the all round RGB lighting? Why use more plastics? And what's with dropping the 2.5 gbe ethernet to 1.0 gbe? Also you totally didn't mention this drop in the RJ45 port speed to 1 gbe. I stopped watching after the point you talked about the rear ports at around 9:16. Intersting how you quickly glossed over those short comings and your choice of words. I know its hard to be too critical esp when Lenovo provided you with all the units for review.
Honestly I get the feeling they're holding out for a Legion 9 model or something similar, or Lenovo is just trying to cut corners to adapt to the absurd price hikes from Nvidia. The touchpad is plastic instead of glass, the design is much more boring and looks cheaper (in my opinion) without the brushed aluminum chassis from last year, there's no more fingerprint reader, there are fewer Type-C ports (seriously, who needs 4 USB-A ports anymore), there's no icon illumination for the back ports, and the AMD model isn't even coming to the US. As much as the performance of the 4080 looks really tempting, I think I'll be much better off sticking with a good deal on a 3080Ti or RX6850M XT model from last year, even if they don't perform as well. Well, that or wait a bit for the inevitable Legion Slim gen 8, which should hopefully bring the AMD Phoenix processors once they're available next month.
I think more USB-A is better than more USB-C, but you are right, they are cutting corners to keep the price down. It is cheaper than last years model for that matter.
You’re right about everything except that 4 USB-A is likely more convenient to most people than 4 USB C. I think they should go with 3 of each next time. 2 USB-A like on last year’s model was too few for most people.
I see a lot of complaining , but yall want to pay 1k or more for a few extra quirks , all the power to you , i got my 4090 for 2,799 and im super fine with that.
I don't understand why people complain about the size/weight of the power adapters. Are you mouse or men. If carrying a laptop and power adapter in your back pack is too much for you, then you need to start going to the gym and put some muscle on. How small do you want a power adapter to be..a tiny 330 watt power adapter will over heat quickly and not last long.
Still love my gaming 3i, it really handles most anything at a decent frame rate albeit usually with slightly tweeted settings but nothing that makes you feel like your missing out on quality. Lenovo has really had a solid run the last few years.
is it possible if you could do a 1 month of use review to see if it holds up temp wise? i know alot of laptops when on constant charge and playing high end games 8 hours a day can start running really hot

I'm wanting to purchase for the amazing performance. I really hate that they've lost the little high end features though - led lights over ports, fewer usb-c, plastic trackpad, and the new design looks more clunky than last gen. I'll take the extra thickness for better performance. For the 4080 ti models, will they bring it all back?
I really think you should go for an ROG this year. Perhaps the Strix G16/18 or Strix Scar 16/18. I got the 7i Gen 7 a few months ago and been loving it only because at the time I didn't want to go for a Scar 17 with a 16:10 aspect ration, medium build quality and no Windows Hello

It is slightly heavier than my older 3060 strix scar 15, but I've gotta say my Davinci Resolve exports are more than twice as fast and I can output straight to av1 instead of using handbrake after the fact. The keyboard is quite nice, I found myself getting up to full typing speed pretty quickly. The only exception to the is the 10-key, I'm happy to have it but it does feel a bit cramped and is harder to get used to. Overall I'm very happy with this laptop, I picked it over the Zephyrus M16 4080 due to the higher tier CPU in this model. Weight and portability weren't a real concern to me, I don't mind my laptop being heavier. I also own the 4080 model too given that at launch it was the only SKU available. Love it, especially since the black finish gives it a very business like vibe to it. It feels like a beefier Lenovo ThinkPad as opposed to the GAMER(TM) designs on the other gaming laptops on the market.

I'm looking forward to Helios 18/16, which is almost the same price as this Lenovo Pro 7i and spec, although Helios 18/16 can only go up to RTX 4080 with 175/165 W TGP. But Helios 18/16 have MiniLED that this Legion doesn't.
I was going to wait for that too, but I saw someone say in Europe the non-miniLED Helios 18 was €3300. Not sure how reliable that is but even if it was the miniLED one, that's still a decent amount more expensive than the Legion.
@@proXprocrastinator I don't think that price is applicable in america. The Rog Strix 18 everyone loves (best 4080 for $2500) is $3.7 dollars there. OMG, RIP Europe

Its interesting that you said "magnesium and aluminum finish" I bet that, besides the lid and probably the back cover, its all made from plastic lol. Sidez, we lost any kind of windowz hello unlock :' Anyway, I ordered one legion w 4080 because of its price tag (less than 3k for a 4080 is a go). It even, in some cases, surpasses the titan from MSI with literally can cost more than double
Something that bugged me as soon as I saw it -- they turned the RJ45 port orientation upside down! it's supposed to be clip up like in gen7. It's a little thing but it makes a big difference in your daily laptop life.
Lenovo 16" Legion Pro 5i is on sale now at USD1250 (RTX 4060, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, 240 Hz QHD IPS Display). Is it a better buy over ROG Zephyrus G14 2023 (16GB RAM, RTX 4060, 512GB SSD) at the same price ?
Why is it so difficult to find these products in our local retailers here in Canada. It's so annoying that I have to just order these things online when I would rather just drive to my local retailer instead.
They removed many of last year's like the finger print scanner or pressure sensitive keys but I really couldn't care less about those. The 4080 Pro 7 goes for $2600 on ebay and considering last year's 3080ti on lenovo's site is like $4100, that's not half bad. The removed features aren't groundbreaking anyway so who cares about that
pls also people its possilbe for the laptop to have graphics crashes and the whole screen can black out becareful when u buy these cos u pretty much have to undervolt the gpu to keep it stable (which depending on ur perspective it can be fine, but its not factory undervolted of course so you have to do it yourself)
Hey hardware canucks I have same laptop (same specs 4080)I was able to get 6:30 hours of battery life with eco (battery saver plus quite mode) and hybrid-integrated gpu only for normal use like web browsing, video playback on RUclips, ect… and emulating old console games on dolphin.
honestly i dont mind the RGB being toned down to give the laptop a more minimalist feel. When you look at the laptops from Asus or MSI their RGB is all over the place, compare with something like Razer Blade which only has RGB on the keyboards, I think most would easily agree the Blade looks more elegant.
I think most people are more disappointed in the chassis aesthetic change than the RGB. Last year’s industrial look combined with high quality material and brushed aluminum finish gave it a unique and elegant look.
@@Smart_boy2001What does having a numpad or not have to do with elegance lol if anything not having a numpad is more “elegant” since it streamlines the deck of the laptop, gives more breathing room for the main keyboard, and does not offset the trackpad.

Well, yeah. For full price the 4080 legion is cheaper than most 3080ti's while destroying their performance. Either Lenovo cut some features to keep price down, or everyone complains that they're too expensive
Gen 8 looks solid. I am curious how the non TB4 port is wired to display...is it direct to intel GPU OR the RTX? I'd assume TB4 port gets direct access to the RTX? How many 4K displays can you drive, 2 out of TB and 1 out of USBC via DP?
Question for ya. U mentioned installing more memory you will lose the 5600 speed? Is this a limitation of the laptop? I want to upgrade to 64gb and the 64gb kit will be rated at 5600hrz. The laptop won't handle that?
Fun fact: The slim 7 has better battery life than any of the legions based on the benchmark, i think it's think because they limit the size of the fans?
@@exoticus1234 higher legions do not have airplane engine levels fans lol, fans barely take that much chunk of power than it's gonna change entire battery life, and fan size does not mean lower power, please research before you speak man. Finally, I think everyone can tell this is a downgrade compared to the gen 7 legion 7i. The $/fps is amazing tho, that´'s why I ordered one myself
Mayday mayday. I need immediate advice as I have to buy a laptop at earliest! Options: ROG M16 vs Legion Pro 7i both configured with 4080. Question: I like M16 personally but I want to run Microsoft flight simulator at max settings. Can M16, 4080 run MSFS at max settings?
A bit off topic maybe but I got an ROG Strix 15 about 2 years ago with liquid metal on the cpu and gpu. Do I have to or should I replace it after a while or should I only consider changing it when the temps are getting too high?
ye u'll need to change it after a few years . i don't have much knowledge about when exactly and how but i remember very well that u are supposed to apply new thermal paste after few years
If I'm being honest, the Gen 6 looks the best. Boxy, angular, and RGB vomit. However, the fact remains is that if I'm buying one right now, it will be the Gen 8 because the chassis allows for better cooling, hence better performance/noise control. To me, its the inside that counts.
I have Gen 6. I really love it's design. When Gen 7 came out I thought the design was more industrial which I was fine with. When Gen 8 came I thought the design was a joke!
Personally im happy they dropped some of the rainbow lights. Too many computers and laptops have all this showy jazz crap these days. An adult who uses a laptop for travel small workloads and gaming generally doesn't need/want additional rainbow jazz to draw attention to oneself. Slick and stealth is good.

Could you say to us if the palm rest is metal like last year or plastic? In the legion we page says abs but I don't know if is only the track pad or all the chasis
The trackpad is plastic and the palm rest is also plastic. The top and bottom panel's are still metal but the vents are plastic. Kind of like Lenovo legion 5 pro from 2021 and 2022. I might be wrong but based on what I read online this seems to be the case.
I have this laptop with the 4080 and can confirm it's fantastic. I've never been a fan of the left of centre touchpads though, as much as I like the full size arrow keys - would rather they were squished in to fit it in the middle. It's also by far the heaviest laptop I have owned - but the robust cooling system justifies it, I suppose.
Indeed, it’s actually not that heavy compared to the competition if you match the specs, and it has the best cooling, especially with the vapour chamber for the 4080 and 4090 models. I went with the 4080 model myself and it’s a superb all-rounder

Man I'm confused which way should I go 😫 I was planning to buy legion 5i pro i9 13900hx RTX 4070 32gb ram 1tb storage I'm going to be using it for my creative work, after effects, davinci, blender etc but I'm looking to have a color accurate screen as well for color grading purpose but some say it's overpriced for the specs and at the same time I'm looking for other options too but ended up getting more confused
Its interesting that you said "magnesium and aluminum finish"
I bet that, besides the lid and probably the back cover, its all made from plastic lol.
Sidez, we lost any kind of windowz hello unlock :'
Anyway, I ordered one legion w 4080 because of its price tag (less than 3k for a 4080 is a go).
I've seen there are some Legion AMD 3000 series TI models. Have you tested any?
AmD Nvidia combo, best combo. Best of both worlds.
Why is it so difficult to find these products in our local retailers here in Canada. It's so annoying that I have to just order these things online when I would rather just drive to my local retailer instead.
I have an 12700h + rtx 3070. But i am still jealous
They removed many of last year's like the finger print scanner or pressure sensitive keys but I really couldn't care less about those. The 4080 Pro 7 goes for $2600 on ebay and considering last year's 3080ti on lenovo's site is like $4100, that's not half bad. The removed features aren't groundbreaking anyway so who cares about that
The only thing why they will buy the pro 7 is because of the graphics card, while the 7 is for stylish design
I likle how all the downgrades are smoothly brushed over because it's a sponsored review. Hope you got a nice check mate
pls also people its possilbe for the laptop to have graphics crashes and the whole screen can black out
becareful when u buy these cos u pretty much have to undervolt the gpu to keep it stable (which depending on ur perspective it can be fine, but its not factory undervolted of course so you have to do it yourself)
As a RUclips Premium user, I pay RUclips to not see adverts. This entire video is an advert
Beautiful laptop. unbelievable performance.
The 13900HX has 32 threads

@@MerryBlind without a num pad the laptop looks like a toy
@@Smart_boy2001what do you need the number pad for? I don't think I've ever used the numpad on my keyboard, and I'm talking in 30 years. Maybe you should game on the gaming laptop? Just a thought.
@@Cruor34some of us run more than just games. Numpad is critical for using Blender. I personally wouldn’t buy a laptop without a numpad
This definitely feels like it's sponsored
9:30 That's just slightly, not "much more".
How does it compare to the Yoga 9i Pro? Thanks!
Hello! A little mistake, 13900 not 24 threads, its 24 cores 32 threads. Regards!
This laptops so good compared to its competitors, but ips screen is the biggest set back
When will legion 5 pros release?
Legion 7 was a good laptop already, currently it seems cost saving measures are starting to take place
No it's much cheaper. May be last time their expensive side backfired.
Well, yeah. For full price the 4080 legion is cheaper than most 3080ti's while destroying their performance. Either Lenovo cut some features to keep price down, or everyone complains that they're too expensive
@@kylerclarke2689 and 3080ti were 50% more expensive than 2021 models.
Overpriced vs overpriced.
Gen 8 looks solid. I am curious how the non TB4 port is wired to display...is it direct to intel GPU OR the RTX? I'd assume TB4 port gets direct access to the RTX? How many 4K displays can you drive, 2 out of TB and 1 out of USBC via DP?
Does it come with the perimeter light?
I hope laptop companies start using solid state cooling...it's more efficient and way slimmer.
That tech is not yet ready for widespread production use. Maybe in 2-3 years…
Oh man, as someone torn between the ROG Strix and Legion 5, this is NEXT LEVEL but the perfect compromise.
Excellent, Thanks.
Do you review their Thinkpad P series? That is the workstation laptops!! Please.
Question for ya. U mentioned installing more memory you will lose the 5600 speed? Is this a limitation of the laptop? I want to upgrade to 64gb and the 64gb kit will be rated at 5600hrz. The laptop won't handle that?
it's stays at 5200ghz can confirm
When is the Asus scar 16 review coming out?
I picked up a Legion Slim 7i return open box from BB after Christmas. I have been pleasantly surprised. My only complaint is how hot it gets.
I came here so that other doofus bags won't believe ur comment.
Main reasoning slim 7 series is so good even on intel side of things is due to how lenovo optimised it, using efficient pheniox bios etc. Don't blabber dude. Ah how internet has become
@@pranavdupati9164 how about if I go with legion 5i pro 13900hx RTX 4070? But few said battery backup is terrible only lasts about 2 hrs and others I have heard saying it has low speed ram so I'm confused
@@Inc0gnit045 it's average but not at all 2h, expect around 4 to 6h
Same screen, but heavier, bigger, and less battery time. He's becoming the QVC shopping channel.
First, there's no Windows Hello support. Second, the keyboard deck feels like plastic (who cares if it is made of magnesium?, if it will get scratched in the first three months).
Yes he can
A bit off topic maybe but I got an ROG Strix 15 about 2 years ago with liquid metal on the cpu and gpu. Do I have to or should I replace it after a while or should I only consider changing it when the temps are getting too high?
ye u'll need to change it after a few years . i don't have much knowledge about when exactly and how but i remember very well that u are supposed to apply new thermal paste after few years
@@keerthan7558 I have replaced thermal paste before but this is liquid metal, not paste
Any info about Slim 7 for 2023?
It will be interesting to see speeds of GPU load at 37 - 43 dB noise.
If I'm being honest, the Gen 6 looks the best. Boxy, angular, and RGB vomit. However, the fact remains is that if I'm buying one right now, it will be the Gen 8 because the chassis allows for better cooling, hence better performance/noise control. To me, its the inside that counts.
Na, if we go by the looks, Gen 7 is the best.
I agree, Gen 6 is the most beautiful.
I have Gen 6. I really love it's design. When Gen 7 came out I thought the design was more industrial which I was fine with. When Gen 8 came I thought the design was a joke!
Bro review also 5i pro 2023
How can I check the FPS difference between the new Gen 8 Pro 7I 4070 vs 4080 version?
There are comparison videos here on RUclips. Short answer: 4080 is significantly faster, well worth the cost difference.
No TKL version?
Is this laptop fully compatible with Linux?
i'm debating between legion 7i and msi 77hx..difficult choice
The price to performance of this laptop seems unbeatable
just wished that legion laptops offered a 100 percent dcip3 color option for displays like Alienware. the difference is so apparent
Same. I'm probably going to be using an external monitor most of the time, though.
When high end gaming laptops are not home concrete anymore.
Personally im happy they dropped some of the rainbow lights. Too many computers and laptops have all this showy jazz crap these days. An adult who uses a laptop for travel small workloads and gaming generally doesn't need/want additional rainbow jazz to draw attention to oneself. Slick and stealth is good.
at least now we have something with standard design
Review the ROG SCAR 16 MINI LED and compare it's display with Scar 18 IPS panel
In the spec wars bit of the video, you confused "threads" with "cores", not sure you noticed. :s
So it's 32 threads and 24 CORES.
I got myself today a brandnew Lenovo legion 7 with intel i7-12800HX and 3070-ti, 2k 165hz screen, 32gb ddr5 and 1 + 1tb ssd for just 1000€, I’m the happiest person alive at the moment
I have a lenevo legion 5i pro gen 7 with a i7 12900H an rtx 3050 ti...and somehow I'm jealous
Rip....literally worst laptop cpu/gpu combo available 😂
You should have gone i7 12 then gen 3060 . Or 11thgen i7 3070 for the same price if you want more in games.
Sry, but the 3070 model may perform 2.2X times better.
So no 32 threads?
Could you say to us if the palm rest is metal like last year or plastic? In the legion we page says abs but I don't know if is only the track pad or all the chasis
The trackpad is plastic and the palm rest is also plastic. The top and bottom panel's are still metal but the vents are plastic. Kind of like Lenovo legion 5 pro from 2021 and 2022. I might be wrong but based on what I read online this seems to be the case.
yuk, what on earth were they thinking.
It was about time for a review.
That's one long ad..
What the speed at 64gb ram ?
