JoJo’s might be the most fascinating case study of an author’s evolution in existence. From the start he has all the style and surface level skills; insane art and visuals, crazy fun ideas, the ability to create tension and keep a reader hooked. Even though many of the traditionally valued elements of storytelling might be lacking, he’s able to keep the story incredibly entertaining because he’s just that creative. He then develops his skills in creating substance with each part - characters, plot, arcs, themes - all the elements that any other author would start with. And because each part is its own complete story he gets a fresh start every so often, so he can put his growing skills into practice and test himself in new ways. We see each element of his writing and storytelling grow with each part. By the time you get to the latter parts he’s developed into an absolute master of the craft without losing any of the absurd creativity that keeps his writing so engaging.
Not to mention the evolution of Araki's art style. It's not as obvious in these first parts but part 3 is when you really start to see changes. Like, I'm reading the manga and I'm only on volume 3 but you can already see some of the lines smoothing out, some of the clutter being streamlined. And then you get to Part 4 and the change is literally page to page. Like, I'm almost sure Araki intentionally changed his art for the character designs mid battle arcs. It's phenomenal and only ever gets better and better
Love this style of review for a series as wild as Jojo! When you do Part 3, you should do two videos. One for pre-Egypt and one Post. It is a very long Part.
Yeah, I feel like she probably isn't going to like the first part that much (I mean it's decent but not at the level of it's predecessors imo) but with the second one it will be back to greatness
I have to say that you understood and described JoJo PERFECTLY here. This video is so good in explaining EVERYTHING that JoJo is and gives perfect instructions on how to enjoy it and how to take it that I will send it to anyone who is new to the show. Each new Part, it is just that Araki finds himself more and more and gets bold with experimentation. However, I recommend for Part 3 to put it into 2 videos, just like the Part itself is as Part 3 can be a bit too stretched out and is by FAR the longest one in Anime (even though in Manga it's relatively short compared to later Parts). So you might get a bit bored by it at times. The main JoJo there also can take a while to get used to. I also recommend reading the Manga afterwards, since there are a lot of details not mentioned in the Anime, though Anime does an amazing job for the most part in adaptation, sometimes it even improves the Manga, other times it cuts or somewhat misunderstands some details (in the final fight of Part 3 for example). The Manga also shows the best just how INCREDIBLY Araki grew as an artist over each Part. Hell, the art style can drastically change even in the middle of the Part, comparing Part 1 Manga art style and Part 7 Art style is just insane, it's like a COMPLETELY different author/Manga. Araki made some pieces that were featured in the Louvre during "Louvre invites Comic book artists" as he was I believe one of like... 5 or 6 people chosen by Louvre. He also works with fashion designers like Gucci etc. It's quite fascinating learning about him and JoJo:D And yep, I think that going with the nonsense in JoJo is the way to enjoy it the most, taking JoJo too seriously always is not the way imo (even though JoJo does have lots of serious moments too). You surely already know, but I will say this just in case... JoJo has HUNDREDS of direct musical, fashion, pop-culture references that have to be censored in official versions. But in Japanese they are uncensored, so listen for the voices if you don't have uncensored subs (Japanese dub is the best here since it's uncensored and all on top). JoJo is a glorified way of Araki simply sharing his playlist and all his favourite stuff:D It's one HUGE homage to pop culture of especially 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. Poses are often referencing fashion magazines etc. Basically almost every character / power is a reference to something. For example, AC/DC, (Wham)mu, Kars/Cars are named after bands, Suzy Q is after Suzy Q song and Suzie Quatro singer, REO Speedwagon is a reference to the band REO Speedwagon etc. etc. You can view all the references, trivia etc. on JoJo's Bizarre Encyclopedia after you watch it all. Awesome source for JoJo (don't use blue Fandom wiki as it's extremely outdated, plus it's Fandom... so bad).
Also, forgot to add, Part 3 is technically a soft-reboot (even though it was always meant to be connected and finishing stuff from Part 1). The entire Hamon system (except for one character) is scrapped and changed for a new system of Stands (that lots of big series that use "other stuff fights for you" basically took as inspiration - yes, JoJo is THAT influential). Stands in Part 3 are quite basic yet, and the villain of the week is just Araki testing what he can do with them, so keep that in mind. Stands get really good from Part 4 (which actually might be your favourite Part). This was done because Araki was feeling restricted by Hamon and wanted a system that gives him practically infinite creativity, hence Stands were born. He could have kept Hamon, but I guess it would become too overwhelming for him and for the reader in fights, since Hamon can be learnt by anyone and can do lots of stuff liberally. Stands are more grounded in rules (but the rules get EXPANDED, so there will be exceptions - if something is said in earlier Parts as a rule, doesn't mean there won't be exceptions later on when new Stand types are introduced - also, the abilities can change slightly here and there when Araki realises he made it too OP - he is a free-flow artist, so he doesn't plan the minute details that much, which imo makes JoJo even more bizarre:D) Also, the main JoJo is made a bit too expressionless and stoic in the Anime, though don't let his outward behaviour fool you, he's the exact opposite inside. You just need to read between the lines for clues. That makes him much more enjoyable and likeable. In the Manga and the old 90s OVA he has more emotion (that you can also watch for comparison, it's more liberal and imo does the final fight better than the Manga/Anime). Also, if you headcanon him as slightly being on the Asperger's spectrum might also help:D It's not Canon of course, but it can be interpreted that way. Lastly, always watch the last 4-5 final Openings of a Part onwards (in Part 3 it's ep. 46, 47, 48). There's something really cool that I haven't seen any other show do. Also, beware of JoJo fans posting hard spoilers. I mentioned the Stands stuff and soft-reboot to make sure you're not confused why the series changed drastically out of nowhere with basically no explanation, but some JoJo fans, due to being hyped I guess, literally post heavy spoilers (some even misinformation and headcanon as facts, it's bizarre), so be careful.
I don't know why everyone says it's "implied". As far as I know that's just a joke headcanon someone came up with at one point and people just run with it. Like don't get me wrong, I love the idea, but I've seen a lot of people state it as if it was a fact or confirmed by Araki or something. Maybe I'm wrong?
@@GL_099I haven't seen the original books, but maybe the panels of Joseph predicting are on opposite pages of the opponent speaking. It would lean into that idea, if so,, but i really don't know. Cool though, if true
@@GL_099 Yeah, it's just JoJo fans using headcanon as canon without stating that it's just their headcanon. Just like all the Araki forgot in 90% of cases, when these fans don't read or pay attention (just like happened in Part 6 especially before the Anime where everyone speed read it to Part 7 and then they thought P6 is shit as a result, same happened with Part 5 and King Crimson especially that took YEARS to solve because the poor translations before the Anime were already deep-rooted in the community and everybody was making shit up and claiming it's facts - nothing bad about having headcanon of scenes not shown, I have them myself, but don't act like that's what Araki said or wrote directly, especially when then claiming that Araki "Forgot". Part 6 still hasn't recovered, since Netflix screwed it up + Covid, so animation suffered as a result - yes, I STAND by it that Part 6 is very underrated).
It's good you love DIO because one way or another, he has either a small hand or pretty much drives the plot for each part. Part one he was the villain. Part 2, his last minion, killed jojos dad and made Lisa Lisa a criminal. Part 3 who knows. 17:48
Part 3 finale is still one of my favorite action finales of all time, part 6 is... special and I can't wait for part 7 finale which probably will run for a full cour of 12 episodes lol
I have bought one too, with a photo of old Joseph. It was only written "oh nooooo". I have special markets, the tee-shirt was white so i wrote "oh my goooood", "niiiice" and put on the Jojo star too.
Von Stroheim is such a ridiculous masterpiece. I imagine Araraki's conversation with his editor was something like this while showing his sketches "So, this character here, he's a Nazi." "That sounds like a good idea for a villain." "A good idea for a what now?" Who else but Araraki could've pulled off something so ridiculous?
My favorite thing about Joseph's "your next line is..." gimmick is that he shares a voice actor with Katakuri (a casting so perfect i'm sure it _must_ have been an intentional reference by Toei)
That's because it's something hard to pull off. Personally, I don't like a lot, and I mean A LOT, of Japanese humor (I think I laughed with One Piece maybe 5 times in 1050 chapters), but Jojo definitely does it for me. I was worried about not liking it because the over-saturation of the memes, but I'm loving it so far.
Araki is a big fan of popculture and he use his world and characters to reference it. Whammu= Wham, Esidisi = ACDC, Cars = The Cars all bands from the 80's. It goes from the music world, the modeling world and culture from Europe even history. He has even written a book about making manga. It is a great read to undertand how he functions as a writer. The book's name is " Manga in Theory and Practice". He's with Toriyama the fathers of modern Shonen Nekketsu manga. You might see some resemblances in part 3 with some story that you have read.
I love that JoJo's feels like an excuse for the author to write himself into corners only to use the most absurd resolution to get out of said corner, and I love how JoJo fans can lean into the absurdity by saying, through almost unanimous agreement, that the series "Best Girl" is REO Speedwagon. I cannot wait to see the video for part 3, although feel free to use multiple videos per part going forward, because the next couple of parts get a little longer episode-wise.
There's a shot of Joseph standing on the ship with everyone at the end where he's kind of slackjawed with his mouth hanging open and staring off into the distance. Its become fan canon that that's when he finally put it together that he peaked on his own mom taking a bath.
This bizarre series deserves bizarre reviews! I think it's the most fun when you enthusiastically talk about your experience rather than a "plot synopsis" style.
So at the end of part 2 when you see then on the boat, Joseph has this really defeated and dumbfounded look on his face. The common fan theory is that that's the moment after finding out Lisa Lisa is his mom.
Idk a series like JoJo that seems to break the rules of writing so much until you look into the thought process and find “no wait, he was cooking with his inspirations.” Like once an editor argued Hirohiko with Araki that a plot direction was terrible and unsatisfying, but Araki pulled up an Alfred Hitchcock book on writing that stated the opposite when it came to writing suspense.
Such a fun part, especially Joseph's personality. Caesars death is still one of the most heartfelt in the series for me. Looking forward to your update on the next part.
Merphy, seeing you go from "I'm just not a fan of absurdism!" to "why yes, I love JoJo's Bizzare Adventure, one of the most absurd mangas ever" is SUCH a character arc. It never fails to make me smile
Seriously, I cant wait for you to watch Part 5. Knowing you through your content, I just know you will emotionally connect with that roller coaster of a series. We will be waiting for that for sure.
Love that you enjoyed part 2 so much! Part 3 onwards will be more absurd with even more creative fights and iconic soundtracks! And in later parts I hope you cover the philosophical themes and aspects of JoJo!
i lovooooveeee jojos, every single part honestly. It seems he adds some sort of new aspect in every part ie. jobros getting better, the writing less black and white with good and evil, araki and oda are so masterful at their craft its insane
One thing I don't remember you mentioning in both videos are the openings (and ending, but specially the openings). They are all visually and musically magnificent, but in JoJo's they are special. Maybe you didn't notice, but on every finale they add extra SFX to the opening, and from Part 3 onwards the openings change as events happen and things are revealed in the show. I STRONGLY recommend you to watch the episode openings at least when you feel you're getting closer to the end, sometimes they change multiple times and it's an amazing experience to watch trying to spot a new thing and get blown away sometimes. Also, after you're more advanced into the series, I recommend you watch analysis videos of the openings, they are all full of secretes and references to what happened and what will happen, it's truly amazing
It’s 2040, Merphy’s bookshelves are all Jojo’s and One Piece, the few novels that survived “the great purge” gather dust, and the remaining space is overflowing with DIO BRANDO merchandise Merphy: who did this to me *Dio smashes through the window, mission impossible style* DIO: IT WAS I, DIO
Loving the Jojo stuff and this is completely off topic but have you watched the movies Shaolin Soccer/Kung Fu hustle? Basically real life anime with looney toons/jojo shenanigans. And if you enjoy em enough a video could be fun!
Part 2 is absurdly fun, and then it hits you like a boulder and you need some time before you move on. Definitely in my top3 for JoJo parts. Part 3 I think takes one step back on the absurd strategy before it gets back on track, and it keeps ramping up from there.
As much as I enjoy watching detailed analyzes, I have loved watching you absolutely geeking out about your experiences with this series. So when you do finish part 3, I certainly won't mind if that review is more of the same
I’m really enjoying your reviews of JoJo, glad that you’re continuing them! Part 2 is one of my favorite parts precisely because of Joseph’s shenanigans, too. A fair, spoiler-free warning: Part 3 is longer than both Part 1 and 2 combined, so don’t be afraid to take breaks while watching it as it’s not really meant to be binged due to its more episodic villain-of-the-week nature. It gets slow around the middle but really picks up near the end, so please keep that in mind if you ever get bored with its pacing (which got dragged out in the anime production, with the manga having slightly better pacing).
Jojo part 3 is split into 2 seasons and the dividing line is pretty clear. If you do make a video on it I think the best option would to make 1 vid per season.
Merphy:"I really wanted Dio to be involved in Part 2 directly." Meanwhile,me: "Oh, so you have not had your fill of Dio. Here, have the rest parts be influenced by Dio in one way or another."
The best part about Jojo is that the parts are so different. Every part is someones favorite part! Everytime Araki manages to establish a complete new setting and genre while maintaining the identity of the series as a whole.
I'm excited for her Part 3 review, since starting next part they start to be more different from each other than part 1 & 2 who probably follow each other the most
I have to rewatch Battle Tendency. The moment in the final battle when Sono Chi no Sadame cuts in with full lyrics in that awesome gravelly voice is probably the most hype anime moment for me.
I knew part 2 would be your style! Part 3 is where things will feel pretty different but still bizarre. I hope you still enjoy it because win less certain for it. Part 4 however is on I expect to be your favorite so I’m excited for that section
You are in for a treat when you start part 3, I'm sure you will be happy and invested. Part 3 is definitely a more day by day kinda season mainly cause Araki didn't want to do a tournament arc like other mangaka's were doing, supposedly he was peered pressure but did it in a way to where it could be like enemy of the week. (idk how many episodes you watch a day but I recommend watching at least two episodes before taking a break, should make things fun and easier to breeze through since it is a longer part)
Man, I love these reviews. It’s like reliving JJBA for the first time. You’re the best at these raw reactions. Also, stardust crusaders will need 2 videos. Cheers!
The best thing about JoJo is that each part is better than the last. There’s a palpable evolution in storytelling, character building, and art. Looking forward to seeing whether you share the same sentiment!
What I find so fascinating about JoJo is that Araki, almost from the start, embraced and knew how to embody the idea of "camp." The plots, the fashion, the power-system, etc. all take on this seriously unserious tone. The series is fun and kooky while also revealing some pretty heavy ideas at times.

And he created the BEST JOJO,at least for me.
Absolutely, it's a close race between him, Josuke and Johnny for best Jojo
I like him more in Part 3.
On the topic of names, I like Giorno’s more
Top 9 at least
18:15 "its gonna be a hard task to get me over dio"
Part 3: hehehehehe
Is she approaching him? Let her come as close as she likes!
She can't get over dio unless she gets close to him.
The Merphy-Jojo slide into insanity will be fun to watch.
Can't wait for part 7
Love this style of review for a series as wild as Jojo! When you do Part 3, you should do two videos. One for pre-Egypt and one Post. It is a very long Part.
This^
Yeah, I feel like she probably isn't going to like the first part that much (I mean it's decent but not at the level of it's predecessors imo) but with the second one it will be back to greatness
I mean she likes absurdity of jojos so i am thinking she will enjoy part 3 part 1 a lot too but just not as much as part 1 and 2
She should read the manga for part 3, cuz it’s so much faster in terms of pacing
This.
I can't believe she brought up Speedwagon's return, but not his giga chad sucessor, Smokey, who grew up to be Jojo Obama.
Smokey is not a Giga-Chad, he's a poor man's Speedwagon and one of the most forgettable Jojo allies in the whole series.
It's quite fascinating learning about him and JoJo:D
And yep, I think that going with the nonsense in JoJo is the way to enjoy it the most, taking JoJo too seriously always is not the way imo (even though JoJo does have lots of serious moments too).
Stands are more grounded in rules (but the rules get EXPANDED, so there will be exceptions - if something is said in earlier Parts as a rule, doesn't mean there won't be exceptions later on when new Stand types are introduced - also, the abilities can change slightly here and there when Araki realises he made it too OP - he is a free-flow artist, so he doesn't plan the minute details that much, which imo makes JoJo even more bizarre:D)
Also, the main JoJo is made a bit too expressionless and stoic in the Anime, though don't let his outward behaviour fool you, he's the exact opposite inside.
Joseph in part 2 is still my favorite Jojo. He was so funny 😂😂
I love him even better in part 3.
2:36 the funniest part about it is that in the manga this ability is implied to occur because as an american Joseph reads the pages left to right.
Stupid. I love it
Its not implied
It's good you love DIO because one way or another, he has either a small hand or pretty much drives the plot for each part. Part one he was the villain. Part 2, his last minion, killed jojos dad and made Lisa Lisa a criminal. Part 3 who knows. 17:48
The end of part 2 is the most bombastic and chaotic thing you've beheld? Let's see how long that lasts.
part 3 is gonna blow her mind
@@illuminoeye_gaming and part 6🤯🤯🤯
Yeah part 6 hurt my brain.
Part 3 finale is still one of my favorite action finales of all time, part 6 is... special and I can't wait for part 7 finale which probably will run for a full cour of 12 episodes lol
You gotta love it when Joseph yells "OH NO!" I have a t-shirt of it.
OH MY GODDDDDD
I have bought one too, with a photo of old Joseph. It was only written "oh nooooo". I have special markets, the tee-shirt was white so i wrote "oh my goooood", "niiiice" and put on the Jojo star too.
Glad you enjoyed part 2!!! It’s such a fun ride, Joseph is a blast
Von Stroheim is such a ridiculous masterpiece.
I imagine Araraki's conversation with his editor was something like this while showing his sketches
"So, this character here, he's a Nazi."
"That sounds like a good idea for a villain."
"A good idea for a what now?"
Who else but Araraki could've pulled off something so ridiculous?
You seem to forget that the Japanese were literally allied with Nazi Germany. They don't view Nazi characters the same way westerners do.
My favorite thing about Joseph's "your next line is..." gimmick is that he shares a voice actor with Katakuri (a casting so perfect i'm sure it _must_ have been an intentional reference by Toei)
Never forget when Merphy started One Piece by saying "i do not like absurdist humor" and look at her now. The character growth ❤️
@@LightningRaven42 Dude, I promise you that you would adore Golden Kamuy, so check that anime out pls :)
*series* Best Girl? all of anime.
@@illuminoeye_gaming All of Anime? Try... fiction!
@@mordraug6662 TRUE
16:16 “you have to choose, you don’t have a choice”
There's a shot of Joseph standing on the ship with everyone at the end where he's kind of slackjawed with his mouth hanging open and staring off into the distance. Its become fan canon that that's when he finally put it together that he peaked on his own mom taking a bath.
Merphy is going to absolutely love part 4
She’s going to love Koichi
@@speedwagon6-e1b Why wouldn't she? He is truly the reliable guy
This bizarre series deserves bizarre reviews! I think it's the most fun when you enthusiastically talk about your experience rather than a "plot synopsis" style.
NIGARUNDAYO SMOKEY!!!!
It’s so much fun to hear you talk Jojo and look forward to the future because it’s wild. And honestly it’s great to hear love for part one!
I'm glad Merphy is just vibing to the craziness. I think Jojo's excels in entertainment if you go with the flow.
wait did merphy skip the post credit scene at the end of part 2?😂
It seems so, although I'm pretty sure the scene is at the start of part 3. Its a shame she missed such a good stinger tho.
the whole enumeration bit at 1:52 just made me burst out laughing. man do I love part 2
So at the end of part 2 when you see then on the boat, Joseph has this really defeated and dumbfounded look on his face. The common fan theory is that that's the moment after finding out Lisa Lisa is his mom.
Joseph is amazing. I do love Parts 1 & 2 so much. Everyone goes on about later parts, but these are great!
Also the music is incredible!
12:42 "I do think that they did a really good job of posing..." say no more, say no more.
I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS SINCE THE SHORT!!!!!!
"I wish Dio carried over"
well...
SO pumped you decided to go on a part by part basis for this series. God bless Joseph. Probably my fave Jojo of all (with many close contenders)
Idk a series like JoJo that seems to break the rules of writing so much until you look into the thought process and find “no wait, he was cooking with his inspirations.”
Like once an editor argued Hirohiko with Araki that a plot direction was terrible and unsatisfying, but Araki pulled up an Alfred Hitchcock book on writing that stated the opposite when it came to writing suspense.
the fanbase misses dio too, he's such a great villain. Can't wait for your part 3 reaction!
Such a fun part, especially Joseph's personality. Caesars death is still one of the most heartfelt in the series for me. Looking forward to your update on the next part.
speedwagon wasn't just the show. he was the narrator, the audience, the cheer leader, and the best waifu
Merphy, seeing you go from "I'm just not a fan of absurdism!" to "why yes, I love JoJo's Bizzare Adventure, one of the most absurd mangas ever" is SUCH a character arc. It never fails to make me smile
Part 3 is long and episodic, take your time with it and don't be afraid to take breaks
Merphy, I really enjoy watching you just rant about the awsomeness that is JoJo.
I can't wait what you have to say about the other Parts!
Seriously, I cant wait for you to watch Part 5. Knowing you through your content, I just know you will emotionally connect with that roller coaster of a series. We will be waiting for that for sure.
For me part 2 is by far the peak of the whole series, happy to see you enjoying it so much!
Love that you enjoyed part 2 so much! Part 3 onwards will be more absurd with even more creative fights and iconic soundtracks! And in later parts I hope you cover the philosophical themes and aspects of JoJo!
I cant wait for the part 3 review...these videos have been great, but Merphy is gonna LOVE part 3
Cant wait for you to get to Part 4. Its so great
I'm really enjoying these, can't wait for part 4 and 5!
i lovooooveeee jojos, every single part honestly.
Battle Tendency is so good!! I'm so happy you love it!! c: Araki's writing only improves as he goes on!!
It’s 2040, Merphy’s bookshelves are all Jojo’s and One Piece, the few novels that survived “the great purge” gather dust, and the remaining space is overflowing with DIO BRANDO merchandise
Merphy: who did this to me
*Dio smashes through the window, mission impossible style*
DIO: IT WAS I, DIO
I am so glad she is loving this series. For selfish reasons, because I want more content.
Loving the Jojo stuff and this is completely off topic but have you watched the movies Shaolin Soccer/Kung Fu hustle? Basically real life anime with looney toons/jojo shenanigans. And if you enjoy em enough a video could be fun!
I'm glad you loved the beginning so much.
So when you do finish part 3, I certainly won't mind if that review is more of the same
You need to watch part 3 and onward more in major arc pieces to see your thoughts on each of these major seperate stories
The 1st opening playing while Joseph defeats Kars is one of the most epic finales I've ever seen in an anime
Jojo part 3 is split into 2 seasons and the dividing line is pretty clear. If you do make a video on it I think the best option would to make 1 vid per season.
Definitely keep the review style, it's been a joy to watch
They keep getting better in the seasons come. I looked the flow and topics you touched on
Merphy:"I really wanted Dio to be involved in Part 2 directly."
Meanwhile,me: "Oh, so you have not had your fill of Dio. Here, have the rest parts be influenced by Dio in one way or another."
The best part about Jojo is that the parts are so different. Every part is someones favorite part! Everytime Araki manages to establish a complete new setting and genre while maintaining the identity of the series as a whole.
Joseph is most funniest jojo out them all i think.. i think you going love part 3.. keep the same flow as you doing it , i love it.
Just finished part 2. Merphy did really miss the tease for part 3, didn't she? She's going to be happy.
This rocks! JoJo is such a fun series! Each part is such a unique experience while remaining distinctly JoJo
Because Part 3 is that much longer I feel like it could easily be broken up into a couple videos. Gotta say I love the format, trust your instincts!
Part 4 however is on I expect to be your favorite so I’m excited for that section
murphy you have made me the happiest I've ever been again thank you for more jojo
I feel like bizarre really undersells how insane this story is
Thank you for the review, I'm glad you enjoyed part 2 so much. Looking forward to part 3.
Cheers!
You've made me want to rewatch it now!
Here we go. This is what I was waiting for. Your love for part 2 gives me hope for the world 😅
Love to see you embarking on the JoJo's journey. Can't wait to see the follow up videos as well Murphy!
we're gonna need you to hurry and get to part 3 cus youre gonna LOVE that
i love joseph and battle tendency sm!! you don't have to worry, chaos and melodrama are consistent throughout the entire series :)
Im sure you've already heard ALOT of hype for part 3. For me, the moment in jojo were I had my "luffy, help me" moment and fell in love with the series, came in part 3. The ending is were the jojo recipe really come together.
Merphy gets it.
If you love it this much already just wait until after part 3
