Merphy of all people giving Kidd his props, did not expect that. But, you're right this was a respectful way to send Kidd off. This is the end we have to start narrowing the Pirate King candidates even more now. Shanks has been built up all this time anything less then he, Shanks, would be the let down. Most people just don't understand fighting.
Kidd's long stated major flaw was that he was willing to hurt bystanders, and it finally caught up with him.

Yes, people need to realize this. Kidd had a higher bounty than Luffy from rampaging all the way to Sabody. Killer's title is the Massacre Soldier. Luffy had beaten Arlong, Crocodile, Lucci, and is blamed for the entire loss of Enies Lobby (one of the 3 major islands of the WG system). Kidd's bounty was higher than ALL of that based on the amount of people he killed. "Kidd only killed people who laughed at him" No, he killed pirates trying to escape the New World, they were no threat to him nor were they laughing.

There are several pirate groups in the series that do not engage in crimes with victims. This is because "pirate" in the one piece world applies to anyone that sets sail in and willingly live outside of the world governments laws. And a lot (not the majority but still) of these people don't go around plundering and stealing and are just on the seas to be free and get away from oppression and lot more of them don't deserve to be brutally tortured and murdered. In fact Luffy's crew isn't even the nicest, while Luffy is just in it for the adventure and his heroisms are just side quests, there are crews like the Rumbar pirates that specifically set out to spread joy in the world and the Whitebeard pirates that are out there to offer protection and family to the weak and abandoned.
And Kidd has very likely brutalized and killed one of these kinds of crews. He really deserves what he got. I like his character the same way I like other assholes like Doffy, but don't let his one time alliance with Luffy trick you into thinking he isn't a monster
One thing people don't talk about enough is Shanks's line about Blackbeard. Many of us thought Blackbeard would come to Wano and steal the rewards, and Shanks did too. Which is why he went there at the end of the arc. But Teach was two steps ahead. He went to Amazon Lily where no one expected him, and after that, he waited for Luffy, Kid and Law to come out of Wano and ambush just one of them at the next island for an easier steal. A great showing of character agency.

OH and that's also why he went to Elbaf afterwards! Figured that if Blackbeard wasn't going straight to Wano, he'd instead go to one of the islands next on the Log path to ambush one of the Big Three and take the Poneglyph rubbings that way. No way to know which of the three he'd go to, so Shanks picked the one where he would also be visiting and protecting his friends.

I don't think shanks went to wano to stop blackbeard, i think he went to wano because he found out momo was still alive but arrived to late to do anything, my personal theory is that shanks is constantly late to stop things he wants to stop xD

Oda has definitely been in his bag since Wano ended, I think that month break really did him justice.
litteraly every chapter after Wano has been fire, one banger after the other. and only gets better. Oda really needed the break and to get out of Wano already(not that Wano wasn't good, it was great, but so far Egghead is concentrated greatness with every chapter).
New editor too since Wano ended.

@@MrGalRoz you are, because Oda cycles through many editors and Oda has said he prefers to get young editors every time because the longer they’re on the job, they essentially are fans to the point they don’t critique him. He mentioned this specifically regarding his editor during Onigashima.

But ye i guess a set of proffesional and unbiased eyes is always a good thing, even if they are young ones who knows next to nothing compared to Oda.
I was 7-8 years old when I was introduced to One Piece. It is hard to explain how hyped it was when we finally get a proper glimpse of what Shanks is truly capable of. :D

Egghead is very much like Sabody. It has a mystery, lore dump, a reveal of a powerful character, "clones", and the destruction of a pirate crew. Similar beats in a different order.

When Kid said that he will "wipe 'em out in ten seconds flat" I think that is Oda telling us how far Shanks can see.
I think Oda was also showing us Shanks' Achilles' Heel. He has far too many people under his protection - something guys like Blackbeard or the World Government don't care about.
Scary when a GOVERNMENT doesn't care about that.

Desire is the theme of the arc, Lilith talked about being unable to control the desires of cyborgs, and Stella said we owe everything in this world to desire. It being York not Lilith is Oda saying desire has more destructive potential then evil.
Makes sense. Very little of the evil in One Piece is just malice for its own sake. Part of me feels like when we finally learn about the Ancient Kingdom and the Void Century, it’s not gonna be some perfect ancient utopia like we’ve gotten hints of.
Like, it’s very possible that the ruthless authoritarianism developed and adopted by the WG (which, remember, was formed by disparate nations that were, from what we are able to piece together so far, MUCH worse off technologically than the Ancient Kingdom) was originally born from a response to an overwhelmingly powerful and advanced foe (I.e. the Ancient Kingdom), and over long stretches of time what was simply a fight for self preservation by eliminating a legitimate threat ultimately became its own form of worldwide conquest and evil
In other words, the power the WG wields and uses to aid and abet their genuinely evil goals may have not been born from a place of evil, but from one of personal safety. Or perhaps, the Ancient Kingdom neglected a suffering world even though they had technology to share, and their destruction was at the hands of these suffering nations who merely desired for less miserable living conditions.

Through i wanted , lik lilith should have been greed, because right all her actions are to get more funding no matter what. I mean its unair calling lillith evil, she is greed. And the most piratey by that , and york, is obviously envy.

You're absolutely right, Shanks' future sight DOES seem to be on a completely other level than what we've seen until now. Couple that with his conqueror's haki that sends admirals cowering from miles away and Shanks is really being built up as a formidable foe.

At the very least it gives him a bit of credibility. He was enough of a threat to warrant that response from Shanks
Props to Kid for giving him that feeling.
I think the fact that desire was the chosen villain ties into the themes of the arc. I still think Oda is trying to say something with her. kinda like giving us the dark sides of desire.
Its amazing when we see a fight between characters without any plot armour...SO BAD ASS!!!
I believed the traitor was York, not because of clues, but because of context. All of the other aspects of Vegapunk benefited too much from the other satellites to want to be rid of them. York doesn’t share this quality. A king can live lavishly even in the dark ages. She was also the one that would most easily fly under the other vegapunk’s radar. Lastly, we still needed to see how smart she was, which turned out to be a conniving kind of smart.
A part of Vegapunk was in awe of the power of the celestial dragons, but a much larger part of him was disgusted by them. He failed to realize that by dividing himself up, he allowed that small part of himself to act against him.
For me I was really excited when York was revealed, because I guessed it, based on the fact that she was the only one without purpose. Her only purpose is to indulge herself so the others don't have to. Her wanting to be a Celestial Dragon makes sense for a character who's whole existence is consuming.
But according to her this reveal is ‘mid’ because it's not Edison. If it was Edison it would have been great 🙃
I thought it was cute that York was treating the Seraphim like kiddos and they responded accordingly.
We got 9 minutes of Merphy gushing over Shanks and honestly I'm here for it lmaooo. Preaching what we're all feeling.

A popular theory I've seen is that the person on the Blackbeard ship is Aokiji, since he was in Ohara for the incident and Egghead is shaping up to be Ohara 2.0

As much as I'll miss Kid, being reserved to hype Oda's favorite charavter is quite an honorable way to leave the story
That said, poor killer deserved a friend with at least half a brain cell
Edit: Buggy is his favorite is his favorite and Shanks is his self insert and power fantasy, so Kid getting one shot by the author's Neo or Space Jesus is even more an honorable treatment for Kid

So I think the Giants are one of the first times we've seen a place and a group of people be friends with 2 different Emperors. Obviously now we know that Shanks is friendly with Elbaf and has a friendship with Dorry and Broggy, but then the Straw Hats also have friendly relations with them, as well as several other Giants, and even a crew of Giant Pirates being part of the grand fleet. Very curious to see if this leads to anything. Might even be the route through which Luffy and Shanks finally meet.
Fishman Island was "friends" with 3 emperors lol. (More like 2.5 because they had to pay tribute to Big Mom really)

Watch Sanji's brow revert back after the fight, that would mean that he "activates" the germa enhancements ONLY when he has a burst of emotions (be it the "power of love" like he said as a gag or anger or anything else), and Oda has already basically partially confirmed that in an SBS when he answered "why are Sanji's brows curly?" and Oda answered something like "flow of energy" (paraphrasing).

Not sure if this has been mentioned, is there was a line by Bonnie saying Vegapunks greed knows no bounds, and then it's his aspect of Greed that was so high that it would betray the rest of him.
I thought York was actually a pretty good reveal and option, especially with the alternative translation to Greed, the kanji can also be desire - and Lilith hinted that desire cannot be controlled. Also the celestial dragons are probably the greediest group of people… and that she was the least likely to be suspected if she didn’t fully sync with the brain each day
So from a cursory google, Katuturi can see 5 seconds ahead. Kidd specifically calls out that Shank's fleet will be destroyed in 10 seconds. Now we can't be sure how much time passes between Kidd's callout, and Shanks futuresight kicking in, but it looks pretty instantaneous to me. I'd be willing to bet that shanks can see about 10 seconds into the future, double that of Katakuri.
I am pretty sure Sanji enhasments aren’t simply Germa enhancements, him keep saying love part to me feels lot more related to his mother’s love. Even Oda already stated that Sanji’s leg is firey because of his emotions
I like the theory of "Shanks lost the arm because on his future sight he saw that if he didn't then Luffy would be eaten by the sea king" I think it explains someone so strong losing an arm a lot better.
My personal theory is shanks has a devil fruit makes sense why he didn’t eat the hito hito nomi and he just has that dog in him so was able to overcome the waters effect on him but was still weakened enough to lose an arm honestly a future sight type devil fruit would be a cool aot type plot

He's clearly taking after Roger and Rayleigh with no devil fruits but a sword, speed, and strong Haki.
His entire crew isn't DF focused as well, similar to how the Roger pirates were as well. It just doesn't make sense at this point to say he has a devil fruit he's been hiding all along, let alone something that can be achieved with Haki that he has mastery over.

I’ve been loving the last couple chapters of One Piece. They feel so chaotic, cutting between so many different situations, but for some reason it all works for me, and remains coherent?

I would say that the York reveal was definitely above mid when you think about it. Its so poetic that the worlds smartest man that's full of idealism and positivity about humanity's future to the point of naivety, was betrayed by the part of him that represented desire. Idealism and looking ahead is good but you must never lose track to the constant that is human nature as well. All that in the same arc where we learn the true nature of Devil's fruit. Don't know what happened after Wano but Oda is on fire since Egghead started.

Somebody pointed out an interesting theory about the Kidd's pirate where this is their version of Sabaody Archipelago. Since Egghead feels like Sabaody 2.0 and post time skip has a lot of parallel to pre time skip, then this might supposedly be Kidd's wake up call like how when Luffy lost his crew in Sabaody. Even the phrasing and narration is eerily similar to Sabaody's ending where it concluded that on that very day the Straw Hats were eradicated. This time the phrasing is Kidd's pirates were decimated.

I definitely agree with you about Shanks giving Kidd respect. He highlighted his bounty and said to not underestimate him, saw the damage Kidd would do, I mean the fact that Oda highlighted Shanks using an attack from Roger says what we need to think about Shanks. It's less about Kidd being a joke but more about Shanks being That Guy right now. Kidd got as much respect as makes sense. The fact that in Wano he could only do 2 beams on Big Mom and here he shot off at least 5 instantly in Shanks's vision says that yeah, he's improved a ton but yeah.
It's Shanks. He's probably the strongest pirate now IMO.
One thing about the York reveal that I hope to see as we learn more about her character is how she's the Satellite of (Greed and) Desire when so much of this arc has built up Desire as a good thing. Devil Fruits are the desires of mankind manifest, Egghead is so futuristic it is basically the Island of Desire. So seeing the darker side of Desire through York will be interesting to see.
Side effects of reading a One Piece chapter, crying, yelling, screaming, going "Whaaaat?", going "What?!", theorizing, being in awe, red eyes and sore throat.
This is actually the first time we've seen future sight accompanied with illustrations! I also believe Kidd stating that he would "wipe them out in ten seconds flat!!!" was a purposeful bit of dialogue. The actual illustrations plus that line shows just how strong/refined his observation haki is. He really is an absolute monster even among the emperors.

Oda did mention that he was going to revise and change the story post wano so he can wrap up the final arc sooner, so its very likely that could have something to do with how the over all beats of the narative and pacing is felt quite differently then previous arcs of the series. Pretty obvous that things are moving along quicker and the story is weaved a bit tighter then it usually is. Also the art could deffinitly reflect that change as were getting close to the end and he wants to put his all into everything now.
1079 is in my top 5 favourite chapters of all time incredible my jaw dropped when shanks 1 shot kid and I was like wtf blackbeard near egghead

Post Wano, also known as the final saga or end game is part 3, and part 3 has been feeling like movie 6 which I really liked. Its thrilling and eerie.
The blackbeard ship may be Kuzan. Oda's been drawing a parallel between egg head and Ohara. We may see Kuzan show up and actively fight the government this time.
I like the way oda change the use of little boa power to cuteness over attraction like big boa, it take out the weird felling of she being a child, he take time to show it in the panels
As someone who caught up to the manga recently to read week to week... what a time to be reading. I had Ace's death spoiled. I had Kanjuro spoiled. I had Gear 5 spoiled. But to get to enjoy the Whodunnit week to week and watch everyone theory craft was such a treat. I'm a manga reader now through and through, and I have my own chips down on who's on the Blackbeard ship.
Like, it's Kuzan right? Egghead has made so many callbacks to Ohara that we have to have Kuzan step in and actually push against the government this time? That's the side of the coin that Oda is going for right? And he's going to have been in deep cover on Black Beard's crew and now he's Ice Friend. (I really like Kuzan ok >.>)
I think we might see a Kidd's redemption in a cover Page with him and his crew either stuck in Elbaf or joining forces with Law also that might be Kuzan on that ship
I've been reading One Piece on and off for about 15 years and finally am caught up since last year. To finally see Shanks in action is so satisfying! And I think was one of the most anticipated things in the fandom. It really feels like we are entering the endgame here.
It makes sense Shanks is this absurdly strong. Only way he can be defeated is through a bitch move, and that's always been Blackbeard's go to anyways.
I love how York and Shaka provide two extreme opposite ends of world view. And that makes me wonder what that means for Vegapunk himself, what that says about him. Or is this more of, an aspect of himself combining with someone else's created individuality.
Because York wants to be a Celestial Dragon, despite knowing exactly what kind of people they are and what their existence means. While Shaka is much more aligned to the Revelotionaries. These 2 groups couldnt be any further on the opposite ends of the world from each other. Yet these alignments/desires come from 2 aspects of Vegapunk himself. And its even more brilliant that York, the wannabe Celestial Dragon seemingly kills Shaka the Revelotionary aligned.
That just stood out to me. That these are two aspects of Vegapunk's self, on opposite ends, in conflict like this.
Oda showing kidd doing massive damage wasn't necessary and was a great way to give kidd respect while still getting him 1 shot.
Also I made a joke that upset some people in another chat for some reason but I find it funny that shanks has the strongest crew but weak allies. While buggy and his immediate crew is very weak but has very powerful allies
Egghead is becoming the best arc in One Piece for me. Like really. 😂❤ It is just so exciting every chapter and the break weeks are killing me.
If it's Blackbeard then what happened to Law? But what if it's Kuzan? Last time we saw Kuzan is when he and Van Auger took Pudding in the cover story. When Blackbeard was fighting Law, Pudding was already inside the cage on the Blackbeard ship. Where did Kuzan go after succesfully doing his kidnaping mission?? That's why there's also possibility that Kuzan is the one who is going to Egghead right now. It's so exciting how a lot of prominent players get involved in Egghead.

Seeing Shanks finally in action was absolutely jaw-dropping. Ever since his debut in chapter one, we knew Shanks was supposed to be depicted as someone of great strength and possessing powerful haki, but we didn't think just how strong he really is. Don't forget this guy was able to take on Kaido off-screen during the Marineford Arc before making his epic entrance by the end. So after seeing what he's capable of in the recent chapter, it makes ya wonder what will happen when he and Luffy eventually clash once the race for the One Piece finally begins.

Shanks is broken, and I love it. I said when Kidd arrived, that there were 2 possible outcomes. 1. Bargain for safe passage, imo the correct one. Shanks is a reasonable guy, they are both red-haired, one-armed captains, Rockstar was even on his way to parley. 2. Kidd making the wrong move, proving he is an idiot because he was 100% outclassed and like 10:1 outnumbered, amd risking his entire crew's lives while Shanks ends everything with one move. I also pointed out, and I stand by it, that they are going to survive for narrative reasons, and because this is Shanks. Any other Yonko would mean the absolute end of the Kidd Pirates, even on accident.
People even used this to say "He is exactly like Luffy!" while Luffy has already proven he would back down in this situation. Luffy risks his life every single time against impossible enemies, but that's when he knows he can keep the biggest threat busy, and his crew is capable enough to take the rest off. Let's say he was strong enough to fend off Shanks for a while. Shanks's crew was said to have the highest average in bounties, so if we take that to some degree as a result of their individual powers, Beck, Lucky Roux, Yassop, they are not that much weaker than their captain, in fact Beck with a gun was enough to stop an Admiral with a Logia on his tracks. I love Killer, he he had no chance in a million years to keep Benn Beckman busy, much less defeat him. And that still leaves Lucky Roux and Yassop for Heat and Wire? I give them 2 seconds, and that's just before they pass out to Shanks's big-pp Haki continuously pouring down.
BTW, loved the detail of the narrator saying the same thing they said about the Strawhats back in Sabãody
I don't want to brag, but I really want to brag; York was my number 1 suspect and I am so stoked it was her. Personally, I think she made the most sense from a narrative perspective. She was the one who had the dirtiest job that gave her the least amount of oversight. No one wants to think about their toilet habits, so of course she was able to scheme unseen. York literally plotted to kill the other Vegapunks & take over the world in between trips to the bathroom. Classic Oda.

I think that the attack of Devine Departure was used in the God Valley Incident which is why the legendary island is lost to time.
It seems like Oda really wants to erase or remove some of the characters because he just want to focus more on the main players like Dragon, Shanks, Blackbeard, Mihawk and Imu. Include the Cross Guild and also, i hope Law is okay. So worried about him. Oda can't kill Law off screen, he might just been defeated

Both of them take down Emperor(Big Mom), Kid got credit and Law also got credit

Oda’s art started changing towards the end of Wano, I think. He’s using a looser style that allows him to be more playful. He also seems to be using brush pens more often alongside micron and g-pens. While the structure of his drawings are rougher these days, they certainly have more energy.
I agree, Oda's art has been hitting kinda different with the details and whatnot lately, the art has also been pretty damn horny too.
He might've gotten a really talented assistant who also just happens to really enjoy drawing butts

I would love for you to rereview the Reverie Arc, Levely Arc. There are a couple things you missed to talk about, and One thing in particular. There's a moment where we see the kings and queens at the meeting and Shirahoshi is about to be enslaved by our most hated celestial dragon, only to be saved by another celestial dragon... The same celestial dragon from Fishman Island that the queen saved all those years ago.. And, I think that its a bit surprising that you never talked about a moment like that when it meant the queens actions impacted such an evil person. I'd also love to hear you talk about the connection between this and Fishman Island, Thank you!

The York reveal actually had a MAJOR clue but it was at the beginning of the arch so we all missed it. When Bonney first meets vegapunk next to the giant robot she says “Do you know what your problem is Vegapunk?! Your endless desire for knowledge will spare no one in its GREED”. And she uses the word for greed, although depending on the scan translation they might have missed it.
But Bonney litterally tells us the answer when she meets vegapunk and says this issue with him is his Greed, which then ended up being the clone that was the issue
I think we are getting a tag team fight with S-Hawk and S-Shark vs Zoro and Sanji. The command room was above the room with S-Shark and it would be a way to get Sanji in on the Seraphims weakness
