Buggy in the middle of a huge war: "dont forget to like and subscribe and share this video with your friends because the RUclips algorithm is evil like the world government."
Wanna hate stupid lava guy more? You met him before. In Robin's flashback. He's the one that commanded to kill the civilians just in case there was a straggler.
267 sword wounds 152 bullet wounds 46 cannon wounds Half his face burned off by magma Not a scratch on his back Whitebeard was an absolute monster. Truly worthy of being Roger’s rival.
Marineford is what solidifies the sheer WEIGHT of Hawkeye’s line all the way back at the Baratie before he cut down Zoro. “You have no idea how big the world truly is.”
Huh never thought of that, really makes it more impactful that mihawk is the one who also realizes why luffy is so scary at marineford the way he can make an ally of anyone he interacts with
The author is so confident in his writing that Marineford arc has no protagonist in the first few chapters before Luffy arrived, and it turned out great
Honestly I've seen other series (in several mediums) do this and Oda definitely does it better than anyone else, probably because of how good his world and character building is. I mean, One Piece is the only series out there that can have people hyped beyond belief every week as chapters come out in which not a single main character or crew member is in. (Reverie) Like when Reverie ended and we went back to the crew everyone was like NOOOO, and not because the main characters aren't good, but because the world is so interesting that it hardly needs it's main characters to thrive.
@@gregorypan and Reverie itself as much as it look like nothing much happened or as big as marineford, its a bit trivia mini-arc of countdown before entering wano. 5 chapter before wano, each chapter has something to do with something that represent number :D
I love it when the narrative changes protagonist temporarily. Can anyone else think of series that does this with their arcs? Personally I think of hxh and Gantz. Although kurapika is a good protagonist, it seemed a bit last minute, and not as cohesive narrative change as the reverie for instance. On the flip side, flawed protagonist Kei being replaced by goody two shoes Kato didn't really seemed like a good fit for the depressing world of Gantz. As opposed to the morally grey world of one piece where all characters are free agents with their own agendas which is why an arc like marineford could stand up on it's own
Oda’s comment about Ace’s expression before his death: “As for Ace’s expressions before his death, I had this idea of transition while trying to read what was happening in his heart. And, honestly, he’s hurt, he’s hot, he’s suffering, he’s mad at himself and does not want to die. That’s what says his first expression. But I thought he would probably also want to transmit to Luffy that he does not regret the life he lived, hence this smile. After all, we smile to crying babies to calm them down, don’t we ? It’s kinda the same. I see his grin as the ultimate expression of his love to those who are still in this world.”
Oda freeing Ace and letting Luffy and the readers really feel that sense of relief and accomplishment, only to have him die in Luffy's arms was the cruelest things anyone could have done. Following that up with not only Whitebeard dying to Blackbeard, but having everything go right for Blackbeard while Luffy just loses it all was just Oda's nice little icing on top. Fantastic, in the best and worst ways possible.
Luffy, unlike other shonen protagonists, loses. And he loses *hard*. He lost to Crocodile, he almost lost to Lucci, his crew lost to Kuma on Thriller Bark, him and his crew lost to Kizaru in Sabaody etc. etc. He doesn't always win and progress on his way just because he's the main character and I love it.
“If you are still here she says. Woman, we are readers of a manga with 1000+ chapters, now keep rambling that that’s why we are here, we are really invested.
The thing that hurts so bad about this arc is that they really didn’t fail to save Ace. They saved him, they were home free. Yet he still died. That’s tragedy right there.
Another tragedy was that Ace never got to develop past is character flaws. He was captured because he was stubborn and wouldn't let go, and he was killed for the very same reason. It's really poetic in a way. Oda is one of the best mangaka of this generation.
@@saulgoodman6457 I would have loved to see Ace get stronger in the time skip. Sabo will at least carry on Ace's legacy and probably create his own version of Ace's attacks (It would also be cool if Sabo awakens the fruit).
I think another important point about the rest of the Straw Hats not being here is that, if the entire crew had been here, they are *also* so much weaker than everyone else here. They would be completely out of their element, and it's entirely likely some of the crew mates would have died. They would have all been ants in a battle of shoes. So glad you made it to this point of the story, it's been a joy to go on this journey with you!
Yeah they struggle with 1 Pacifista and we saw in the war there's like double digits of Pacifista. That's how outclass they are in the war, they're literally just a fodder in the grand scheme of things.
I agree with Merphy, that's a brilliant thematic bit right there. Not only the strawhats are not there for practical reasons (they'll just be liabilities), but also for thematic reasons: The whole point of One Piece is that Luffy can only succed if he has his family on his side. Each strawhat compliments each other, and their strenght relies in their teamwork. This arc was an important thematic lesson: If his friends aren't there Luffy will fail. The only other low point in the series was in Water 7, when the strawhats were also broken.
There's this little panel where some pirates are taking down pacifistas at the shout of "this is the power of the new world" or something like that and it's crystal clear just by that how outclassed the Strawhats, and even the rest of Supernovas, would be in that war. Zoro and Sanji could give their all and still just be able to barely survive, and with Mihawk there I can see Zoro getting another harsh reminder of how far he's from getting at his level (although it would've been interesting to see him react at Vista holding his own against Mihawk even if for just a little moment).
"Even in death, his body did not fall. His figure, taking down enemies while losing half of his head, was truly monstrous. The total number of sword wounds he received in this battle was 267. He was shot by 152 bullets. And was hit by 46 cannonballs. And despite all this, his proud back, over the course of his entire life as a pirate, never received a single scar from running away!"
Merphy thought that the One Piece community was so nice for shielding her from spoilers, little did she know it was all for this moment, for her to get as hurt as possible.
As a great man and terrible doctor once said “When do you think people die? When they are shot through the heart by the bullet of a pistol? No. When they are ravaged by an incurable disease? No. When they drink a soup made from a poisonous mushroom!? No! It’s when… they are forgotten.” Ace, Whitebeard, and Roger live on.
small detail like naruto using uzumaki instead of namikaze but i like how ace uses his mother's last name not his fathers...its great as a reveal but also its just likeable..these 2 had great mvp moms
@@razkable watched Naruto a long time ago so not sure, but didn't he just go with the name since he never knew his father at the beginning? While Ace was born gol d. @@arkeshjayakumar5746 It's funny because the uzumaki clan was hunted down from everyone being afriad of their vast amount of chakra capacity and control and that would also make naruto a viable target aside from him being the fourth hokage's secret child , that's why they are near all extinct with the exceptions of a few minor characters.
My wife binged all of One Piece Anime during the pandemic. She cried when Ace died and she still gets torn up about it to this day. She doesn't even like when I mention Ace. And this is from a 28 year old woman who had never heard of One Piece before and didn't watch Anime. This shit is just great storytelling. Anyone can enjoy it, that's what makes it so powerful
I am and still the exact same way lol, I binged all of one piece two years ago and even now I get really emotional just by seeing a picture of Ace, it physically hurts my heart 😭
My wife used to watch One Piece back in the day but lost interest in thriller bark. Told her she should watch from sabaody but she said wasn't for her. Today, while scrolling through my YT timeline saw this video's thumbnail in the TV and asked what was this about. Told her about Merphy and all and said to her that this would be a good one bc of the Arc. She asked what was the Arc about (i double checked for spoilers) because she isn't that interested in One Piece Told her describing with as much detail as possible what happened to ACE. She started crying and asked me to stop bc was too much She stopped watching One Piece 12 years ago and still remembers the characters and has an emotional response to their circumstances. That is amazing storytelling!
“One by one, he turns the people around him into his allies. More than anyone else sailing the seas… That man possesses the most terrifying power” Mihawk
Doflamingo had the right to claim that power makes the rule. Law telling that the powersurge he has been waiting to witness will be thw one that put him to the ground
Mr.3 was up there was to free Ace when the opportunity came. Reason is, as he says "Would you make fun of me if I told you I'm doing this for friend?". Mr.3 was trying to make sure Ace survives because his friend Mr 2 Bon Kurei sacrificed himself for the cause.
the story is still the same it was in chapter 1, Luffy wants to become Pirate King. The previous Pirate king is dead and left his will for the pirate world (to look for One Piece) and still, pirates like Blackbeard and Luffy are looking for it. The only thing that changed is our perspective of the world and the understanding of this goal and how Big and difficult it is
Merphy, I am so happy you didn't get spoiled on Ace. It seems like everyone that comes into this series gets spoiled on that one thing, and the fact that you dodged it is honestly miraculous.
Seriously, it was like one of the first things I ever knew about the series before I even got interested in reading/watching it, because my best friend was a fan and she wouldn't stop talking about it to me XD.
hahhaa yep it’s like a darth vader tier spoiler. I remember when the manga first came out you can see the poster on bookstores and everything hahaha (in asia)
I was in the school, may of 2013, reading one piece, and a classmate screamed from the other side of the room: "ace is roger's son and he is gonna die". Mf i'll never forgive him
I was lucky that OP was one of the first manga I ever read, and that, at that point, I wasn't really going around any forum or fandom discussion threads. I just straight up downloaded the series and got hit by every single plot twist or strong moment possible, no anesthesia dude. It was great and I'm so glad for it.
I was new to facebook once upon a rime and was immediately spoiled for Aces death, but at that point I hadn't begun my OP jorney so I forgor about it for some time. Then when the time game I remembered but decided that it was false news and till the end I was hopeful and debated that he would survive or not and when he actually didn't despite all the hope I had for him, it hit hard for me. Because I really didn't want him to die, even if I knew he would.
I had the weirdest experience with ace's death. I knew he was going to die, but didn't know when. Once luffy freed him, i genuinely thought they were going to escape alive, so i was just as hurt as someone who didn't get spoiled. I wanted so much to believe they were going to escape that i fooled myself
Merphy: “I’m sorry this was so long” Me, who recently watched the 11 hour one piece community reverie: please don’t stop. And I kinda want you on next years reverie when you are caught up
@mic eatah idk if you've had your answer yet, but some one piece youtubers have made their reverie irl (online) where they discuss everything one piece, great fun ( ruclips.net/video/No3pHtj31bA/видео.html ) link to Mr Morjs video
I still love him though. He's amazing. He is chaotic and so so interesting as an antagonist. The world is so much richer for having him in it. Throughout the entire war he seems to be the only one who not only wants to be there but even takes pleasure from it. He's the Joker of One Piece.
@@sindri1447 honestly he is my favorite villain. Whole Cake island and Wano villain are not of that level. Wano is absoutly awsome don't get me wrong and Whole Cake for me it is a disaster
Marineford wouldn't be so powerful if Oda didn't spend so many years building up a world where people just don't die. I read it at the time and it was unbelievable. Even with a hole in the stomach the fandom didn't believe he would die But the moment where Luffy breaks down is what breaks everyone I like that you noticed he died with a smile on his face. That is something that everybody with D in their name has done. Roger, Saul and Ace Fun fact: Oda only draws scenes of characters crying if he cried too. So that scene probably broke him to write Also Coby getting the courage to challenge Akainu and being protected by Shanks is a direct parallel to chapter to chapter 1 where he challenges Alvida and is protected by Luffy. "Well said"
I can vouch for this. I remember when the spoiler of the chapter, which was named "the Death of Portgas D. Ace", people actually believed it was a fake spoiler (for some reason those were common at the time). I felt the same, I read it and just like "nah, fake". So actually, even having read the spoiler for it, it took me by surprise when it actually happened.
@@ibrahimsurti4922 if Merphy hasn’t read post summit war arc this is a spoiler for her but anyways we see Shanks say that there was many times when while on Rogers ship they were surrounded and wanted Roger to run but Roger never did. Ace was a lot like his actual father even if he didn’t like him. So no not every pirate crews tradition is to simply run away
Frankly, you probably are one of the few people I ever saw who understood Garp's power level and gave him some respect. Even though throughout the story, it keeps telling you Garp is one of the top tiers lot of people constantly thinks him too low
Fantastic review Merphy, thanks for spoiling us with such a long one!! I'm so incredibly glad that when Ace died Luffy didn't go into classic, shounen, anger-power-up mode here (a very common trope in shounen manga). He's a 17-y-o boy whose brother was just killed in front of him, after losing his whole crew, fighting for days straight, literally running on (artificial) adrenaline to save him. He just, kinda breaks. He's not a person with superhuman powers here. He's just a boy. I'm also very grateful that, even though Ace died in the end, he did so on his own terms. He wasn't shackled and held up for the world as a sacrifice to "justice". He HAD been rescued, and when he did die it was for the sake of saving his little brother's life
Agree, I love manga that doesn’t lean on shonen tropes, they were good when they were originally created, like going super saiyan, but they get played out. And one piece has a lot of original creative things for me to enjoy. Or twists on tropes and common themes that make it interesting.
yeah i loved that !!! even better whitebeard did. i feel like oda really wanted to rub it in that luffy is not the strongest and people who are stronger than him are there now
"There is no ship that can bear me into the new era." - Whitebeard. Seriously, I'd love to watch a series about his adventures and life. I mean, just the little bit we see of him when he's sick and dying at the end of his life is so impressive. Imagine if Oda did a thousand chapters just dedicated to his journey to that point.
Him being a legend is way better imo. The way he talks down to the admirals, the way they set him as the pinnacle of the old era speaks volumes. He was there, not only there, but at the top Alongside garp, roger , semgoku, dragon, shikki( meh) and many more. Thats why he calls kizaru an upstart. They are admirals, in probably one of the most silent era of pirateship. Whitebeard witnessed the rise of a legend, and sae the world turned on its head amd he still sat at the top
I want another Mangaka pick up Whitebeard story with Oda , and just draw it. But i bet oda doesn't want to 😂 I see this is happening when he draw Xebec flashback soon .
Imagine how much we silently suffered each time you said "Ace is gonna join Luffy's crew!" and "Luffy will now go save Ace!"😫🤣😫Ahh! The mental pain! We did our best not to yell spoilers 🤫
The thing with Ace is having the freedom to choose how you live and die. To die for being Roger's son was so unfair because he denied his bloodline and tried to live his own life, and he was willing to live after being freed... but he made two choices. Die for the name of his father and die to protect his brother. It's symbolic that he didn't die "executed in a formal way" because it's what highlights that he didn't die as Roger's son but as Luffy's brother. It IS upsetting that he took the bait? Yes, but an audience always analyze it from the outside which allows us to be more rational about moments when they're clearly on the edge. The same happens with Hunter x Hunter all the time, sometimes it's not the rational but the emotional who drives those decisions and emotions can be tricky, too much to handle, confusing but it's the most human thing so I accept the controversy of actions and deeply love Ace as a character.
For sure, Ace's death is not a moment I think anyone LIKES, but it is certainly narratively compelling. I don't have any comments to add to this other than just hearing you talk about this arc was enough to get me to cry. Multiple times. Had to pause the video a lot. Great review.
@@boyy9482 Nah man his death felt so forced, it's like Oda rushed into making a situation to somehow get Ace killed and the best way he could come up to kill him was because Ace couldn't handle middle school insults from Akainu, makes me hate Ace tbh, his last words were "Thank you for loving me" yet his love for his younger brother was so weak that he couldn't swallow his pride only to get killed and spit on Luffy's hard work. In the anime with the face Luffy makes while crying looks kind of stupid, makes me feel bad for him but doesn't makes me feel all that sad.
You know why doflamingo and the rest philosophising makes even more sense ? That's because the warlords are just as much spectators as they are actors. They are here to defend their title or to watch the era change, but really they are mostly chilling during the war. You can FEEL that they are much less invested in their job than say, the admirals. Even freaking kizaru seems like he has more skin in the game. Well, with the exeption of kuma (paw paw)
Yeah, if all the Warlords went all out… the Marineford War would be over before it could properly begin. Doffy and Mihawk alone would stomp all the commanders up to Marco.
@@papaofthejohns5882 Doffy really could give most of the commanders a run for their money. He would probably beat all of them one on one. I still think Mihawk is weaker than Doffy. While Doffy was never seen struggling even once, Mihawk was stopped a few times by Flower Vista among others. Not that Mihawk ever looked worried but at least like he could be stopped temporarily. Doffy didn't seem to have that problem. He just did whatever he wanted and nobody could do anything about it.
@@seraphlord for me the thing is, I don't even hate him. He's a terrible person, but I actually like him, or at least I like how charismatic he is. Funny how this review and the Avatar movie that does not exist has close to the same runtime. And I would watch and/or listen to this review again and again just cause.
Baby Oars was so precious to everyone no matter that he only was thrust into our lives for a few chapters. Also, you mentioned someone stabbed him in the back, that was actually Mariah using his shadow to impale Baby Oars through the chest and it was just protruding from his back; you can also tell it was Mariah because the shadow had a gecko (like his name) on the end of it. Also, regarding Koby and the voices in his head, I know you'll be doing a re-read so I won't say it outright, but Koby is not the first character we've seen go through this kind of trauma. Looking forward to more 1.5 hour long reviews since Oda just seems to make bigger and bigger arcs, but it's what we're here for.
Another fun fact: the devil fruits of the admirals are very ironic. Akainu being cold hearted gets lava, Aokiji who's warm hearted gets ice. Kizaru talks and acts slow despite being the speed of light
What's interesting about Koby is that he already did the "standing up to someone" in the very beginning, but it still hits different because he's still able to do it not only while having a clearer picture of what the world is really like and what actual power is, but also going against an authority figure he should be seeking approval from instead of being taken hostage by an "enemy" pirate. He was able to speak out of ignorance and against something he hated at the beginning (which was still brave), but now he's able to do it in full knowledge of the situation and against someone who occupy the very function he's aiming for.
fights and rumors, lot of stuff happens outside, and not revealing that, is one of the reasons why Opiece world feels the way it does, right? From this stuff comes the main conflict I have with anime and the criticism of the generic shonnen pple. And its not only because Oda decided so, but any information from the pirate era (in our world) is left to speculation. There really are many things that we will never know about them, and Oda chose a perfect context to create one piece
to be fair if every fight was shown then One Piece would be way longer than it already is, he's also leaving it to the anime to fill in the blanks so its not being left to the imagination anymore.
"Hot guy gets fisted by a hotter guy" In all seriousness I have never experienced anything remotely similar to reading Marineford weekly as it came out in my life. So much enthousiasm, so much hype, so much tragedy. No one believed Ace would die. Even after Sakazuki melted his heart and lungs. And then, in came chapter 574 "The Death of Portgas D. Ace. Also known as sledgehammer to the ribs. And then chapter 576 "The Great Pirate Edward Newgate". I can't read it without tears in my eyes and every hair standing. Probably my favorite single comic chapter of all time. The man died standing, with half his face missing, swords protruding, not a single coward's wound. And like his unyielding body, he never compromised his morals. "It has been passed down since ancient time. And in the future.. Some day... Someone will appear carrying the history of all those decades on his back, and challenge this whole world to a fight." Hmmm... I wonder who that might be. It's not like Whitebeard would spoil this story for us.
This arc is...really difficult for me. It's so well constructed, the pacing is killer, and the way it builds is unbelievable. However, I started watching op as a way to distract myself from the death of a loved one so seeing Luffy save Ace? And then having Ace die anyway (and his final goodbye)? Literally broke me. I remember crying so hard I started hyperventilating. So I find myself unable to read/watch this arc and get joy from it - even though it's some of the best op has to offer. Even watching videos about Marineford hurts
Idk who you lost but my Grandma before she passed always thought it was stupid for someone to mourn someone after they died. I don't say this to be insulting. What I understand her words to mean is thus - Don't mourn the loss remember the person for who they were and what they meant to you. It's sad that they're gone but as my Grandma would heartlessly say, they're gone. Live your life and try your best to get over the pain because it's what that person would want. I was in the middle of my original watch of One Piece when she passed so I do understand. I'd really recommend pushing through the series does get so much better. All that said I'm gonna go cry about my Grandma having been gone for 🤔 7 years this December.

Merphy’s review feels so much like the Mars rover landing and the entire crew on earth celebrating. While this is such a deflating loss for Luffy and the whitebeard pirates; it is truly a feat that Merphy-senpai got to this point unspoiled. I honestly don’t think I’ve seen a content creator get here with an authentic reaction and review without knowing what was to come. This is a huge credit to Merphy and her team, but also this great community that has done an outstanding job containing ourselves. We aren't done yet though, there are still so many adventures before senpai is caught up. Let’s let her grieve for Ace and Luffy and if she needs a week or two; more power to her. If you need content of hers, I deff suggest the Avatar Season One review, it is delightful!
“Luffy is the main character from our point of view. He is not the main character in this world.” (at 44:15) This perfectly stated sentiment is why One Piece is so epic.
My favorite aspect of this battle, aside from Whitebeard acknowledging Luffy, was the zero hesitation from the Whitebeard Pirates to protect Luffy...he was important to Ace, that's the only reason they needed
I love how the comments are so essay-like, with thought and analysis, it shows how One piece fans are so dedicated to this story, and it just brings the whole community together.
When Daniel Green started reviewing One Piece, he said that people were commenting at around 3-4x the average rate of his videos. One Piece fans really like to share our opinions lol.
now she sees why arcs like long ring long land amazon lily and eventually zou exist and why thriller bark was a bit more comedic...oda needs time man..he wants to make the arcs better in the future so he needs time thus he will push out a smaller arc inbetween big ones so he can plan them better and do more in them then if he just went from big arc to big arc...thats how we get jaya..a great small arc...thats why one piece works..if it was all big intense arcs man i would get overwhelmed..we need 5-10 cool down chapters

“I liked that when Ace died, Luffy didn’t get power ups, transform or some shit like some other typical shonen main characters. He just cried. He broke down and just cried.” Copy-pasted from a comment I saw in the past, I still remember it cos I liked it so much. Even for One Piece having the most absurd world and extremist characters, it’s so amazing how real their emotions seem to feel like.
Merphy definitely didnt get that vibe because this is her first shounen to read. So as a book reader, this is probably just a normal for other stories to have that kind of reaction. I guess it is nothing new for her.
Yeah, because there was intervention from another character (Shanks) to effect the plot in the same way as power ups usually do in Shounen which would somehow get the hero out of trouble because of the power level of the 3rd party. Nice try tho.
Yeah ikr.. I would have legit got upset if luffy went like angry super saiyan or freaking 9 tails stupid demon... Instead all he did was what every " sane person " would do.
@@AniCryptoEarnings You're right, because every "Sane person" has a hidden one in a million power up which activates at the right time to save Ace right before his head was about to be chopped off.
As a HUGE fan of Ace, I, like a lot of people, were hoping for the best with him and Luffy. And while this arc ended in tragedy, the ride that Oda took us on to get to this point was absolutely worthwhile. Every step of this journey has been so perfectly planned out and executed up to now, it makes you wonder how he did it. Marineford is probably my favorite story arc in fiction because of that. While Ace may be gone, his spirit will live with Luffy as this fantastic story continues to unfold.
a fantastic review! and since I'm a patron I get it on the same day Daniel put out his water 7/ennies lobby review! thank you for working so hard to get this out on schedule, I know that last 10 chapter marathon was a doozy ps. the navy guy standing by Garp and Ace is Sengoku, the fleet admiral (direct superior to the 3 admirals) and idk what the "four keys" is but his fruit is a Zoan like Chopper and Marco except he turns into A DANG BUDDHA!!
One thing about Garp is that he's like Luffy in that he's a free spirit, but he still knows his responsibility. His epithet is literally "The Hero," imagine what would happen if the hero of the Marines would've betrayed the World Government and the Navy to save the life of the son of the Pirate King and party of the Whitebeard pirates. It would literally destroy all of their moral and prestige. The consequences are beyond far reaching.
I still think less of him for choosing that over his family though. He’s actively propping up an evil force, and letting his grandchildren die for it along the way when he knows they aren’t bad people. I hope garp eventually mutinies the navy and turns it into a force of good one day but honestly ever since this arc he needs to be redeemed to me because I was just so disappointed with his choices.
@@weadon44 I understand your point but honestly Garp did the closest thing to the "right" thing considering the millions of pirates that would be galvanized by this betrayal to rape and pillage around the world.

We shouldn't forget that this war happened cuz of Blackbeard, he planned everything from the beginning ,his every move had ulterior motives and that's why I like Blackbeard he is such a great antagonist. He literally is the antithesis of Luffy, both have the same dream but the methods they use are very different. The mind blowing thing is that ODA foreshadowed it in the bar scene on jaya where both order the same thing but have different opinion. Marineford is the greatest war arc in the anime history.
He really didn't plan everything, initially he was planning on capturing Luffy to become a warlord and get into impel down. That wouldn't have started a war. He only went with Ace because it was convenient at the time. Yes he had a great plan, but he adapted to the situation. Which is another connection with luffy honestly, in that fate put him in a situation that was more advantageous for him, just like how luffy (for example) lands on drum island right when he needs a doctor, Blackbeard gets helped by fate. The difference there is Luffy does what he wants and if he gets lucky, that's nice. Blackbeard waits for the opportunity to do stuff and plans ahead.
It's great that he's also very lucky. He relies on fate, and believes a person's will can influence the world, just like luffy. Fortune favours the brave and you can't really complain about luffy's luck if Blackbeard also has "plot armour".
One thing I like is Blackbeard is clearly a great schemer style villain, his plans have always been fairly effective though sometimes they are altered due to unforeseen events, and they aren’t so complicated and bullshit that Oda needs to spend a whole chapter of him monologuing to explain it, instead Oda just lets the plan play out and trusts his readers to be smart enough to follow the logic
Even though OP might be my favourite manga and MF might be my favourite arc in OP I still can't give it that huge credit, simply 'cause Coalition arc from Kingdom exist. It is absolutely my favourite arc from anything and it is a war manga. Obviously just my two cents that I just felt the need to share
This is when I began to understand what One Piece would ultimately become. I was so confident that Ace would be saved and we would go down the typical Shonen path where the hero always wins. Luffy losing Ace hit me so hard and I'm so glad that Oda was not afraid to take it there. This elevated One Piece to god-tier levels and it makes me so excited to see everything else Oda has in store for his readers.
To this day the image of Luffy sitting there broken, eyes white, mouth open, and head back brings tears to my eyes. So few stories have impacted me in this way. One Piece is near and dear to my heart and always will be. Thank you for deciding to take this journey.
Its such a testament to Oda’s writing that he can turn around characters on a dime. Crocodile was the most disgusting and selfish man when we met him in Alabasta, someone who did such irredeemable things to Vivi, and yet when push comes to shove, he shines during this arc. I love that Luffy knows what he is capable of and takes responsibility for him when they arrive at the war. The second he goes for whitebeard, luffy puts him in his place and establishes who is in charge here. For him to then fight in this conflict and be one of the key saviors of Luffy at the end is such a good moment. At the end of the day, despite luffy crushing him and knocking him down, he still can’t help but want to see Luffy keep going. Crocodile knows how tenacious Luffy is. More so that any other character in the series. No one has beaten luffy down as many times as crocodile. No one has basically killed him as much as crocodile, only for luffy to get back up and surpass him. Its So GOOD
When you release that the entire alabasta arc happened because crocodile got wrecked by whitebeard in the new world. So he came back from the new world in search for pluton so he could go back to the new world and get his rematch.
Regarding the luffy not being a powerhouse alone but naturally getting powerful allies that help him, I was expecting you to quote Mihawk there, as he beautifully sums it up: "It’s not a Devil Fruit, or some cheap trick… One by one, he turns the people around him into his allies. More than anyone else sailing the seas… That man possesses the most terrifying power." Hawk Eyes Mihawk to Luffy.
One of my favorite moments of Marineford is Sengoku holding Garp down to keep him from killing Akainu after he killed Ace. That made me love Garp more than anything. Ready to throw a lifetime career away for love of Ace and Luffy.
Kind of makes Dadan's words hit harder. She lectured him about doing nothing to help them, but he couldn't. He held it in so long that he couldn't stop himself from standing by anymore and got stopped, and had to let himself be stopped so he could continue to stand by and do nothing. I can't imagine how much that must have hurt, but he still bit the bullet and let her take her frustration out on him.
@@sirapple589 Yeah it's pretty much confirmed by Oda that Garp has lost none of his potency through age. People are right to fear his might. Sakazuki wouldn't stand a chance if Garp went after him for real.
The whole inherited will isn't exactly a special power, but rather one of the themes in one piece, of people taking on the mantles others had before them, continuing their "will". There's probably more to it but it's mainly just a theme, like family and the bonds you share with others
problem is Haki is not very well executed in story AT THIS POINT OF STORY (marineford and before) it is confusing when and how someone using it it is not clear until it will be fully part of the story
Inherited will is a theme that runs through a decent amount of manga. You could say Ippo inherited Kamogawa's will, as an example. That said there's obviously SPOILERS The Will of D which, while probably not a special power, clearly seems to be something other than just a theme.
@@audax_ Family is pretty much a special power when a protagonist turns out to be a descendant of every special-powered species, race or bloodline in a setting.
The phrase of Whitebeard not having suffered a cowards wound while showing his back with the Jolly Roger is referring to Zorro's saying of a scar on the back of a swordsman being shameful.
Definitely, especially when u consider that White Beard was a excellent swordsman. I also love the juxtaposition to Ace. Ace choosing a “cowards wound” to be his death if it means he can protect luffy.

Safe for Murphy, In the previous saga prior to marineford. The marine told us that they only have enough power to handle up to 2 Emperor at a time. In marineford, fleet admiral decided to stop fighting wasn't because shanks is all powerful. Its because there were too much to handle if shanks joins in. Shanks, whitebeard pirates and blackbeard plus level 6 prisoner .
Merphy: "So the one piece fandom says they like long videos... I'll give you a run for your money". Me: "I'll raise you one more: Re-read analysis videos"
As someone who is watching one piece for the first time and slowly making my way through, I watch your reviews as a sort of reward for finishing each arc and making it this far
Marineford may be the biggest 'what if' in all the media I've consumed. 'What if the crew was there', 'what if Shanks was a little faster', 'what if Garp stepped in', 'what if Ace had let that one thing slide'. I think that's part of the reason why this arc is so impactful - so many things could've been different had there been even the slightest change in circumstance.
For those of us reading week to week at the time, this arc was HUGE. Before this arc, in the One Piece fan community we had a saying: "No one ever dies in One Piece unless they don't have a name or are in a flashback." Up to this point, we have seen a man FACE TANK A NUKE and survive. We've seen characters miraculously survive injuries that were designed to kill them with alarming frequency. When Oda killed off Whitebeard and Ace, we were like, "Oh crap! He's not screwing around anymore!" Characters in the present actually died, and they were characters we LOVED! During the character popularity polls held by the magazine, Ace always scored well. None of us actually expected Oda to kill off Ace. It was the gut punch of all gut punches at the time.
I remember reading the week before and being like "Nah that wouldn't be something that Oda would do." and then I open next week's chapter and it's just "The Death of Portgas D Ace"
That bit about "fathership" or mentorship in the series that you mention (Tom, Hiruluk, Shanks, Zeff, Whitebeard) seems to be one of the central themes of the whole story, referred in One Piece as "Inherited Will". It's one of those concepts that have been introduced in the series since chapter one and seems to be underlying most of the events in the series.
I will say this. The anime handles the war exceedingly well. Whitebeard's arrival. The quiet, the sound of his steps, him facing the navy....I still rewatch that scene for how impactful it is
@@caetanyyy if anime companies were to release bundled episodes say (4 or 6) online after they had aired on television on a subscription service, with only the first episode having a necessary flash back as well as a single opening/ending. I think the pacing problem would be remedied greatly.
Whitebeard: "I am only a man with One heart, I cannot be the strongest forever" best underrated line Marine ford is like a roller coaster ride of emotions Oda really is a genius in story telling the glory of marine ford war
@@jayglizzyxgaming8812 That is a hot take for damn sure. Not that Jaya is bad, one of the dopest set-up arcs in One Piece. Def underrated, but damn bro.
This was probably the most emotionally impactful arc to read as a weekly reader when it was coming out. After chapter 573 and Ace getting impaled by Akainu, there were still people questioning if he was really going to die. Chapter 574 being so conclusive and simply titled "Portgas D. Ace Dies" was huge. Luffy's breakdown and the teamwork to get him out alive felt intense, and Koby's big moment was so incredibly satisfying. We finally had a real idea of how huge the gap in power between Luffy and the big players on both sides truly was. Stories like this are just unforgettable no matter how much time goes by.
Oda kills so little even now. He loves the fake out deaths because he seems to enjoy killing just not the act of being gone. So at this point it's like ehhh IS HE DEAD? Even in more recent chapters when a character goes down no one 100% thinks they are dead who knows. Which unfortunately takes a lot of agency out of deaths because even by time it's accepted it's not in the moment it's a delayed death
Yes. I did not believe it when ace died. It also helped that around this time, bleach had so many fakeouts too. It's interesting though that after ace's death (the most successful arc in one piece to date btw), Shonen jump started killing more fan faves in Naruto, reborn!, Bleach, Beelzebub, toriko etc
Hey Merph! Thank you for this wonderful review. Being part of your Patreon, I know how hard it is for you to complete the arc with your schedule. Yet, you still manage to do it for the fans that are waiting. Cheers to that!!! Can't wait for the next arc review to wrap up this saga so you can finally start your re-read.
Your gentle intellectual way of explaining freaking one piece in a way a book reviewer would, taking the time to dive into characters. FREAKING ONE PIECE CHARACTERS, in all their glorified sillines and over-the-top-ness as actual human beings is such a serotonin boost for me. I hope you treat more manga this way, like naruto or hxh and not just mainstream manga like berserk (though i would love it a lot) please keep doing what you do. I adore it
In the Eternal Log interview 2012, Oda stated the following - "One thing that motivates me to keep drawing One Piece is that I want to draw the last chapter. The last chapter is AMAZING!! I Imagine a final chapter that will make the Marineford arc look like nothing." "The Marineford arc really felt like a side trip to me. I didn't expect it to be popular. But the thing I think is really interesting is the last chapter. So I ask that readers stick with me until then."
He said that!?.. I thought he only mentioned about the last war just once and it was a year ago where he said marineford would look cute in comparison... This is news for me!!
The last arc (and chapter) is gonna be awesome for sure. This war will be seen as a child fight in comparison to what the future of the story awaits us. I don't know how will it develop or end (though I have plenty of theories on a lot of things and characters), but I know for sure it will be awesome, interesting, funny, sad and rewarding as hell.
I can only imagine that the final arc will also be a world war clash, the one that is hinted at by Whitebeard in this arc. It could potentially be a blood bath opening up to almost any character dying. Its terrifying to think about.
@@Argent_Void it's pointed in Marineford. Some Marine fodders said "So, is that The Fleet Admiral Sengoku Devil Fruit is?" "Even for us marine, we rarely seen his power" And "He turned into a Giant Buddha!". So, you maybe just forgot or didn't pay enough attention to that moment

Honestly I've seen other series (in several mediums) do this and Oda definitely does it better than anyone else, probably because of how good his world and character building is. I mean, One Piece is the only series out there that can have people hyped beyond belief every week as chapters come out in which not a single main character or crew member is in. (Reverie)
Like when Reverie ended and we went back to the crew everyone was like NOOOO, and not because the main characters aren't good, but because the world is so interesting that it hardly needs it's main characters to thrive.

“As for Ace’s expressions before his death, I had this idea of transition while trying to read what was happening in his heart.

Yeah, maybe Zoro and Sanji could be helpful, everyone else would much more of a distraction to Luffy worrying about them.
@@scribalma_h exactly, Hancock defeated two pacifistas alone, while the whole crew struggle against one

What made her decide to start with One Piece?
My wife used to watch One Piece back in the day but lost interest in thriller bark.
Told her she should watch from sabaody but she said wasn't for her.
Today, while scrolling through my YT timeline saw this video's thumbnail in the TV and asked what was this about.
Told her about Merphy and all and said to her that this would be a good one bc of the Arc.
She asked what was the Arc about (i double checked for spoilers) because she isn't that interested in One Piece
Told her describing with as much detail as possible what happened to ACE.
She started crying and asked me to stop bc was too much
She stopped watching One Piece 12 years ago and still remembers the characters and has an emotional response to their circumstances.
That is amazing storytelling!

It's his experience
Mr.3 was up there was to free Ace when the opportunity came. Reason is, as he says "Would you make fun of me if I told you I'm doing this for friend?". Mr.3 was trying to make sure Ace survives because his friend Mr 2 Bon Kurei sacrificed himself for the cause.

Marineford wouldn't be so powerful if Oda didn't spend so many years building up a world where people just don't die.
I read it at the time and it was unbelievable. Even with a hole in the stomach the fandom didn't believe he would die
But the moment where Luffy breaks down is what breaks everyone
I like that you noticed he died with a smile on his face. That is something that everybody with D in their name has done. Roger, Saul and Ace
Fun fact: Oda only draws scenes of characters crying if he cried too. So that scene probably broke him to write
Also Coby getting the courage to challenge Akainu and being protected by Shanks is a direct parallel to chapter to chapter 1 where he challenges Alvida and is protected by Luffy. "Well said"
NAH I NEVER CRIED WHEN ACE DIED....I WAS SWEARING ACE FOR NOT OBEYING THE PIRATES TRADITION OF SIMPLY RUNNING AWAY
I can vouch for this. I remember when the spoiler of the chapter, which was named "the Death of Portgas D. Ace", people actually believed it was a fake spoiler (for some reason those were common at the time). I felt the same, I read it and just like "nah, fake".
So actually, even having read the spoiler for it, it took me by surprise when it actually happened.

still don't get why people thinks him too low when his introduction is literally "the man who cornered King of Pirates numerous times".
He HAD been rescued, and when he did die it was for the sake of saving his little brother's life
You sum it up pretty beatifully
He was there, not only there, but at the top
Alongside garp, roger , semgoku, dragon, shikki( meh) and many more.
Thats why he calls kizaru an upstart.

@@ACE-lf3yi so what? Doesn't matter elitist
The same happens with Hunter x Hunter all the time, sometimes it's not the rational but the emotional who drives those decisions and emotions can be tricky, too much to handle, confusing but it's the most human thing so I accept the controversy of actions and deeply love Ace as a character.
you said this so well. ace’s flaws, his decision, just makes me love him even more

Oda is the master of off-screening fights, so many cool moments left to the imagination
Get use to it. Lol
fights and rumors, lot of stuff happens outside, and not revealing that, is one of the reasons why Opiece world feels the way it does, right?
From this stuff comes the main conflict I have with anime and the criticism of the generic shonnen pple.
And its not only because Oda decided so, but any information from the pirate era (in our world) is left to speculation. There really are many things that we will never know about them, and Oda chose a perfect context to create one piece
Fight and cool move are not really a big part of One Piece otherwise Oda would have to draw this for another 10 years lol
to be fair if every fight was shown then One Piece would be way longer than it already is, he's also leaving it to the anime to fill in the blanks so its not being left to the imagination anymore.
I absolutely love the fact that Oda doesn’t draw fights for a sake of drawing fights.
"Hot guy gets fisted by a hotter guy"
In all seriousness I have never experienced anything remotely similar to reading Marineford weekly as it came out in my life.

While Ace may be gone, his spirit will live with Luffy as this fantastic story continues to unfold.
Going merry>
a fantastic review! and since I'm a patron I get it on the same day Daniel put out his water 7/ennies lobby review! thank you for working so hard to get this out on schedule, I know that last 10 chapter marathon was a doozy
ps. the navy guy standing by Garp and Ace is Sengoku, the fleet admiral (direct superior to the 3 admirals) and idk what the "four keys" is but his fruit is a Zoan like Chopper and Marco except he turns into A DANG BUDDHA!!
“I’m trying really hard not to just cry in every video” SAME THO
Me too lol
One thing about Garp is that he's like Luffy in that he's a free spirit, but he still knows his responsibility. His epithet is literally "The Hero," imagine what would happen if the hero of the Marines would've betrayed the World Government and the Navy to save the life of the son of the Pirate King and party of the Whitebeard pirates. It would literally destroy all of their moral and prestige. The consequences are beyond far reaching.
And yet he still almost did just that after Ace was killed. That shows how hard this hit Garp.
I have no doubt that if sengoku didn’t stop Garp that Akianu would be dead right now. Especially for what you learn later about Garp.
@@She-Devil94 Garp was so beast in this arc. Hes literally so angry that he needs the Fleet Admiral to smash his face into the dirt, and he doesnt say something like, "Let me up, Ill kill him". He says, "Thats right Sengoku, hold me down just like that. If you ease up even a little, Ill end up killing Akainu." This dude is so hard that he says he isnt even planning on killinh Akainu, but Akainu cant handle what hes about to do and he'll die anyway. He is so BEAST

It’s funnier now because Blackbeard makes year spanning plans, and Luffy keeps messing up Law’s plans by just doing whatever he wants.
Its So GOOD
Crcodile is still a bastard lol, it's just that him being a bastard on our same side against the antagonist was cool
He is the devil you know
Yeah.... No one has beaten luffy as bad........ Yet.
When you release that the entire alabasta arc happened because crocodile got wrecked by whitebeard in the new world. So he came back from the new world in search for pluton so he could go back to the new world and get his rematch.
@@Mrflame5000 What about Lucci? He screwed Luffy up even though he won.
Regarding the luffy not being a powerhouse alone but naturally getting powerful allies that help him, I was expecting you to quote Mihawk there, as he beautifully sums it up:
"It’s not a Devil Fruit, or some cheap trick… One by one, he turns the people around him into his allies. More than anyone else sailing the seas… That man possesses the most terrifying power." Hawk Eyes Mihawk to Luffy.
she remembered the sentiment but she just didnt remember who said it XD
This review was everything I expected from you. Both insightful and extremely engaging. Fastest hour and a half of my life.
“You’d better not let go of me, Sengoku…
Otherwise i’ll kill that damn Sakazuki”
Chills, literal chills
Agreed. This and Whitbeard’s rage against Akainu were chilling.
Sengoku literally saved Sakazuki's life right then and there.
That’s not grandstanding either, Garp could totally do it.
So it’s not even a threat, it’s a statement of fact.
Makes it so much cooler.
@@sirapple589 Yeah it's pretty much confirmed by Oda that Garp has lost none of his potency through age. People are right to fear his might. Sakazuki wouldn't stand a chance if Garp went after him for real.
Lmao Akainu would've squashed him. Sengoku saved Garp from getting annihilated.
So because it's a theme it's not a special power? What?
@@kyleward7417 "family" isn't a special power. In the same way, inheriting someone's will isn't the same as avquiring new power

Marineford may be the biggest 'what if' in all the media I've consumed. 'What if the crew was there', 'what if Shanks was a little faster', 'what if Garp stepped in', 'what if Ace had let that one thing slide'. I think that's part of the reason why this arc is so impactful - so many things could've been different had there been even the slightest change in circumstance.
ace was gonna die
It was quite literally the biggest gut punch in manga, both to the fanbase and to Ace

@@jayglizzyxgaming8812 not arguing which is better but okay.
yeah this arc is Oda saying: "oh you thought Water 7 was painful?"
