12 INSANE NEW IPAD FEATURES: Apple Pages Will DESTROY Microsoft Word in 2023

  • Microsoft Word is undoubtedly the most successful word processor and the de-facto standard, at least in the business domain.
    But this only is true as long as you are talking about Microsoft Word on a Windows machine. On an iPad, the Battle Royal between Word and its biggest competitor, Apples own Pages app, is a completely different game.
    When I started comparing both apps on an iPad, I was blown away in how many categories Apple Pages smokes Microsoft Word. And not only in obscure categories, but in main ones, where you expect Microsoft to lead.

      That‘s what takes a lot of time ;-) I first write a script, then I record myself talking with my main camera (iPhone 14) as A-Roll, then I record the iPad-Screen as B-Roll. I import them in Final Cut and then layer these 2 with my face being on top. Then in Final Cut you can apply a Shape Mask only for the portions where the iPad screenshots are present. With this effect you can create the circle. Then I resize and position it.

    In the comparison of page with word, almost every student and academician prefers word due to the available plugins in the academic field, even if the page is superior to many area. Do you have a solution for Page's citation programs or plugins?

    • @patrickstoeckmann
      @patrickstoeckmann  Год назад +9

      Word (on a PC or Mac) is more extendable than Pages, no doubt about it. Still this does not refer to the iPad (which I compared). Students (like most companies) rely on these extensions - I know. This has always been the strength of Microsoft. Outlook has more extension capabilities than Mail, Excel has more than Numbers and so on. Even PowerPoint has more than Keynote - yet a lot of very professional people will tell you that Keynote is more powerful and elegant than PowerPoint. Yet, if you rely on an extension that doesn’t matter. So, you are not choosing Word, because it is the better or more elegant Word processor, but because it is the only one who plays with your favorite other program like Zotero or so. Another case where even if you would like to use Pages, you HAVE TO use Word. Sad but true.

    How did you get the Format menu to stay pinned open to the side in the iPad Pages app? All I get is a drop down that floats over part of the document, and the moment I go to type, it disappears. The ability to keep it pinned there like on the Mac version would be very useful for my workflow. 👍🏻
    Nevermind, I enabled the “More Space” scaling setting on my 11” iPad, and now I get that Format menu to stay open! I guess it was a screen size thing. 👍🏻

    I found Word always very cumbersome and am now wondering, after having absorbed all the information from your great video, whether it’s possible to convert my existing Word documents to Pages equivalents without losing their identities, meaning still having the same name, date of creation, etc. after conversion.

    • @patrickstoeckmann
      @patrickstoeckmann  8 месяцев назад

      Well, the name would be the same but the extension would change to .pages instead of .docx if you convert a file. If you convert you are basically creating a new secondary file with this new extension and new creation date. You would have to delete the .docx file afterwards. I am not sure I would do that on all documents. What you could do is to make Pages the default handler for the file types .doc and .docx (on a Mac), so every time you open that file Pages is launched instead of Word, because Pages can open .doc and .docx files. This way you can see whether Pages handled everything correctly (fonts, spacing, layout etc) and decide on a file basis whether you want to convert that file. There might be some more complex layouts where you might have to do some edits before conversion. And you can decide whether to save as .pages or as .docx file which might be good when working on files together with other Word users. If you don‘t know how to change file type associations on Mac here is a link: www.macrumors.com/how-to/how-to-manage-file-associations-in-macos/

    • @patrickstoeckmann
      @patrickstoeckmann  11 месяцев назад

      I get it with the page margins. You only can change them in 0.5cm steps. But the space before and after a paragraph can be set per paragraph (or per paragraph style) individually on a point basis. So I can change the before to 12pt and the after to 24pt. I find these options pretty great.

      I wrote a book (Foundations of Systemintegration) using pages in my webbrowser on my windows computer. I found out you can do it (the references) using word on your computer. I think this is a very important thing.
      I considered to get a macbook but i think i will upgrade my ipad to the latest one and a dockingstation to work with my main monitor. Maybe this will work out. • @patrickstoeckmann
      @patrickstoeckmann  4 месяца назад +1

      Don‘t count on Apple adding feature parity soon. In their paradigm the Mac has still a place for doing all the stuff that only a minority of people (like you and me) need (but depend upon). They will add features to those apps on iPad (and later Vision Pro) but the fact that they made it clear that you can connect the Mac (and not the iPad) to Vision Pro (because iPad apps run natively on Vision Pro) shows me, that they plan to keep the Mac for another 10+ years as the main workhorse for specialized tasks (like the one you describe). For people like you (and me) their recommendation would be „Get a Mac“. And I think it might be of more use to you than getting the latest iPad.

    I have been using Word since 1995 to this day, through some of High School, University and daily work, and I have never EVER needed to use Word in relation to: Mail Merge, Spreadsheet integration, graphs, drawings, web video, threaded text fields, smart annotations, or importing PDFs (without the apostrophe, being it a simple plural). Maybe image handling.

    • @patrickstoeckmann
      @patrickstoeckmann  10 месяцев назад +1

      Good for you. If you are using Word ONLY for writing text, then it is a good choice (although I would say there are better programs out there on all platforms, but Word has been the standard for so long now). But in a typical business environment Word has long been used for much more. Integration of Excel documents, integration of charts and graphics for reports or homework and mail merge for creating serial letters are now common business and personal every day use cases.

      Pages is still a pretty good program here and enough for most personal use cases. In a business environment however you often need Word to cooperate with others, so I use Pages on the Mac for all my personal and business internal needs, but when exchanging with clients I will choose Word.

      I agree, although I hope they will improve upon all of them. And even Numbers is way better than Excel on an iPad imo. On a desktop although it is a different game, especially with complex tables. Using MS word on an ipad did not even cross my mind....because i dont want to spend for the ms office app when the ipad has the equivalent apps. But apples's greed will always keep them from making available the full version (macos version) on the ipad....to think the device can handle the full version. Thus, i still cant love the pages on ipad. So limited. The added features could not compensate for the things it lack.

    • @patrickstoeckmann
      @patrickstoeckmann  Год назад

      I don't think it is their greed, but other things are higher on their priority list. And since no other word processor app has yet come close to it (in my opinion) that means that solving some of the problems for the tablet size takes time and effort.

      @kramersells 4 месяца назад

      @@patrickstoeckmann actually i found a way with Pages just insert a section first rather than add a page. Then when you duplicate it just duplicate the page.
      Another reason Pages is better is that you can create a text box and drag it wherever you want. I don’t think Word lets you do that but who knows.

      Word also has text fields which you can position anywhere on a page. Of course you could use text fields for this, but the idea is actually different. The idea is that you have the regular flowing text and the you have this inserts (often quotes or highlights from the text) which you put in a text field on either side and the regular text flows around it. This is often used in print. And yes, you can go pretty fancy using text boxes (you can even connect them, so that text flows from one into another). Their templates (brochures etc.) show some of these capabilities.

      I disagree. If I give it to a newbie I bet that most of the time Pages would be easier to learn that Word. An example the unintuitive way moving an image around works. Or styles and style dependencies. Of course it is more powerful, but intuitive is not the first word that comes to my mind. And btw - I am using Word since Windows 3.1 (so I definitely have some years under my belt with it). And when it comes to the iPad version (not the Desktop version), there are so many things which you can‘t do with Word but you can on the iPad.
