      @@patrickstoeckmann It's still doing it. Any handwriting I do on my iPad looks fine on the iPad but is mirrored and reversed when brought into the board on my MacBook. Can't see any options to undo the issues once it comes into my Mac. This only seems to happen if I'm working on my Mac and try to add handwriting. If I create the board on my iPad and then access via iCloud all handwriting looks correct. Odd! I updated to the latest versions of MacOS and iPadOS but the problem still remains. I'll reach out to Apple and see if I can find a resolution. If you have any thoughts, please share. Thanks.

    Are there any ways you can add additional shapes? Can you create your own shapes and add them into the shape library?

    • @patrickstoeckmann
      @patrickstoeckmann 5 дней назад

      Unfortunately no. You can edit shapes and therewith create new shapes on a Mac (only) using the menu Format - Shapes and Lines - Make Editable, but you can't add these to the shape library. What you could do as a workaround is create a board, call it "Shape Templates" and collect them there. Then you can copy paste them into your other boards. Not really elegant and I hope Apple adds this functionality, since Numbers for instance has the ability already to add shapes to its library.

    Thanks for your video. I just started using Freeform to make art. I’ve drawn many objects & used many colors on my current piece, but because I used a color I don’t like on one part of it-but have already saved the piece (I guess) by virtue of closing it, is there a way to undo what I don’t like? The small undo button within the pencil tool menu only goes back so far. I’m a little nervous about using the undo button at top of screen because I don’t want to undo everything. Thanks.

    • @patrickstoeckmann
      @patrickstoeckmann 23 дня назад

      The undo button only undos the last steps (one step with each click) but I suppose since you saved it, that your edits are not undoable any longer. If it is a color with an object you can simply select the object and change the color though.

    Hi there! I just wanted to say that your tutorial video on using formulas are incredibly informative, and you explain everything so clearly-especially for beginners like me. If you don’t mind, I could use some help. I have the total number of appointments each of my employees has taken this month and their average appointment duration. I’m struggling to figure out a formula to calculate their individual total score using these numbers, specifically to figure out their total total score using 60 minutes (I think I have to use 60 as the weighted number but unsure how to translate this as a formula). Could you provide some clarity on what formula I should use/ write with these three numbers? I’m using Mac’s Numbers program if that matters. I hope I’ve explained this clearly enough for you to understand what I’m asking.

    • @patrickstoeckmann
      @patrickstoeckmann Месяц назад

      Here is what I think you wanted, which I explain in an example. In column A I have the name of the person, in column B the average number of appointments this month, in column C I have the average duration in hours. In column D I calculate the total minutes using the formula B*C*60 (so for row number 2 that would be B2*C2*60). In column E I might calculate a score. I don‘t know how you calculate your score. I went for average minutes per workday. Assuming you have 22 workdays (as a weighted average per month) I would use the formula E/22 (so for row 2 that would be E2/22). Hope that helps.

    I use freeform form on Mac and iPad with pencil, I've used many tools before (including Miro). I consider myself a professional user. I settled on FreeForm and a more equipped tool, like Miro, Excalidraw, .... I learned that it is good practice in note taking to first make a "dirty" diagram just to get the content down and when that is finished, in a second pass, redraw it, rearrange it, abstract, reconnect, cluster it and simplify it. For the first step freeform is perfect since it helps to focus more on the content than the tool (unless you are fighting rather than embracing its simplicity), and for the second step, it is okay although more feature rich tools like Excalidraw, Miro, Figma, etc might be worth the learning curve. That being said, I think freeform has exactly what it needs and nothing that you probably dont need (except for the form library).

    • @patrickstoeckmann
      @patrickstoeckmann Месяц назад

      Exactly. It‘s not an either or, it can be a symbiotic relationship. Whatever tool works best for a task. It is the same for me with text. Lots of notes start with Apple Notes and sty there. Some I might turn into an Email ( especially longer ones), some I bring into Obsidian or Pages or even (if it is something I need to share with a client) Microsoft Word. But Apple Notes is great for just getting stuff down and out of my head. Same with Freeform for quick drafts etc.

Beautiful video and beautiful sense of humour are you blessed with Patrick. I am not a NUMBERS guy, but in case you have the time, I'd like to know whether the object placement features in Freeform are available in Numbers [the yellow guides]. I will probably try it out NUMBERS for my next project and know the answer by myself. God bless you and your family Patrick. Regards and take care, Dr. Somanna

  • @garudasomanna
    @garudasomanna 2 месяца назад

    I am a recent user of Freeform after updating my Mac from Mojave to Ventura 13.6.7. Apart from the lag problem, another very annoying problem is the shake induced in the canvas when I do maximum zooming: I am unable to accurately join up the ends of lines. Very irritating feature. One way I have learnt to bypass the problem is to do less of zooming and adding a background shape [using a black coloured rectangle is a great option] and locking the shape in place. In this way, the yellow guidelines become more visible and I am able to do accurate placement of joining lines. How I wish Apple would allow users to just bring the ends together and have them just 'snap' together. Learning from this video I will also try to hide the grid and see what effects it will have upon lag and canvas-shake problems on my iMac. Thanks you Patrick, your pearls have been appreciated and eaten😄

    • @patrickstoeckmann
      @patrickstoeckmann 2 месяца назад

      Like I told you in the other comment - updating to the latest MacOS OS 14 (Sonoma) - if possible - is probably the best way to remedy this. With IOS17 and Sonoma Apple fixed most Freeform bugs (including the lag - so I don't switch off the grid any longer even at 400%). Also, the edges do snap when I use the yellow lines. For this make sure that in the "View" menu you have "Snap to Grid" and under "Guides" you have "Center Guides" and "Edge Guides" enabled.

    • @garudasomanna
      @garudasomanna 2 месяца назад

      @@patrickstoeckmann Thanks again. Under view menu I don't have 'snap to grid' and 'center guides' that you have stated. What options shown to me are the 'Guides' category are: Center guides. edge guides, Relative sizing, relative spacing, and use haptic feedback; I have selected all of them. Does this mean that snap to grid, center guides and edge guides are not available in the 1.2 version of Freeform that I have?

    • @patrickstoeckmann
      @patrickstoeckmann 2 месяца назад

      @garudasomanna could be that “snap to grid” came later. But I often disable it anyway. But when you have under Guides category the center and edge guides enabled you should see the lines and it should then snap into alignment once the lines show.

    • @garudasomanna
      @garudasomanna 2 месяца назад

      @@patrickstoeckmann I do have the yellow guide lines appearing all over the place and give me information that I am still on the process of learning and understanding. What is my chief frustration is this: when I want two lines to meet at right angles, thet just don't snap perfectly, but either overlap the other or come a bit short. If I ignore these defects, I will have problems when I start to colour fill the boxes/areas in Patina. However, as stated in an earlier post, I have learnt how to work with a lowe zoom level on [about 200] and able to precisely position the line end upon the other line end accurately, chiefly on account of the guide lines. Regards and take care. Dr. Somanna

    Thanks for your teaching the basics of Freeform that I have started exploring only recently. I have this problem: when I zoom the canvas to get my drawing precise, the canvas starts to shake and I am unable to accurately do work such as making the and lines of a diagram meet. Is there any fix to this shake when the canvas is zoomed? Regards and have a nice day.

    • @patrickstoeckmann
      @patrickstoeckmann 2 месяца назад

      Switching off the grid helped me with lag (you've already found this video). Never experienced a shake though. But most problems for me have been resolved by updating to the newest OS versions (IOS 17 and MacOS 14 Sonoma). If possible by your devices update to these versions.

      I thought so. Unfortunately for you, Apple is bringing new features as well as most bug fixes to its included apps with new OS releases. Apple seem to be excellent at hiding all this MS Word beating capabilities. I have tried Pages a few times and find it difficult to put my finger on it, but Pages just feels amateur. I’ve no doubt you could be right, but it doesn’t feel like that in use. Mail merging may be easier in Pages, but if you do it word, then it doesn’t present a problem. That goes for all other aspects of being better that you note. I will continue to try Pages to see if it gets any better, but I’ll not hold my breath. Fortunately I don’t need to use either one of them, I just use the one that feels right, perhaps that’s because I have been using MS Word for many years and I’m just familiar with it. I think Apple Pages may need more than your enthusiasm for it and your denigration of what has proved to be a world leader in this category of productive software. MS Word doesn’t need anyone to do the same for it.

    • @patrickstoeckmann
      @patrickstoeckmann 2 месяца назад

      I am not talking about the Windows or Mac version of Word which is way more capable (albeit complicated for novice users) than Pages. I agree and I use Word if need be (have been using it in Business for over 25 years). But on the iPad (which the video is talking about) it is another game and Word is clearly missing out on features. And for most novice and private users Pages is a way more pleasant way to get to writing. For business, academia and power users there is no denying that word might be the only real option.

    • @jacksjaunts8580

      @@patrickstoeckmann you are right Patrick, I use a PC for creating word documents in the main then iPad for editing on the go. Probably why I don’t gel with Pages as it’s a start from scratch document generator that for me would be on the go, I don’t usually do that. Doing anything infrequently doesn’t engender easy familiarisation. As I should have realised, my instant reaction keyboard warrior comment had little solid ground in light of your clarification. I will listen more attentively in future and consider the whole videos message rather than the individual points. More power to your elbow.

    A few questions. First has there been any work on allowing use of templates? If not, any thoughts on ifvthey'll add this later? I'm interested in using Freeform to build Mind Maps. Since there isn't template options, how would you recommend building Mind Maps? Would hate to just build it from standard blocks & lines since that would be just building a picture vs a design that can carry additional info. What would be the best way to build a multilayer Mind Map? For instance a map that has both single layer objects and objects that hou could select that would bring you to another mapped out idea? Appreciate any guidance. Thanks.

    • @patrickstoeckmann
      @patrickstoeckmann 2 месяца назад

      Honestly, you shouldn‘t use Freeform for this. That is not what it was build for. There are more specialized apps for Mind Mapping. Freeform doesn‘t have templates (and I don‘t know when or even if this will ever come). You can‘t collapse branches like in Mind Map apps. Also multilayer is also not really feasible. You can only create multiple boards and create jump points between them via the link option. So, I would choose a different and specialized Mind Map app for that.

    13 inch m4 iPad gets hot asf and crashes when you use Freeform. This is meant for "artists" but as soon as you start to get photorealistic it starts to crash. Incredibly annoying.

    • @patrickstoeckmann
      @patrickstoeckmann 2 месяца назад

      No, for photorealistic you should use other apps like Procreate. Freeform’s focus is more on brainstorming and collaborating on ideas. And it still has a problem with lots of pencil strokes - either in drawing or handwriting a lot. Sad to say, but that is my experience. So, if you are an artist, use specialized apps

    I've always used Microsoft Word and/or Google Docs because I had to for school or work. I take a lot of personal notes in the Notes app, but for longer form pieces that require more formatting, I decided to branch off and start using pages. I'm blown away by how lovely the experience has been thus far. Thanks for this!!

      Sorry, not sure how I could help you. Haven’t had these problems. I get why you are infuriated about data loss. I would be too. Are you working on multiple devices on the same board. Maybe you updated on one device before it had synced all changes from the other device and that corrupted it? Just a thought you might check. Looks like the iCloud sync went wrong and often these problems occurred because of multiple versions not integrating correctly. And other than Numbers Freeform has no good version system where you can retrieve older versions. Sorry.

    The shapes are vector files, which is why they have holes and can be resized infinitely. Adding text to simple shapes to create labels is recommended, but not for complex shapes. I wish Apple add math text or math symbols in the shapes.

    • @patrickstoeckmann
      @patrickstoeckmann 3 месяца назад

      As far as I can see in the current betas of IPADOS 18, Apple will bring Math Notes to Freeform. But this will be more the ability to calculate input from your handwriting or within text fields, not so much adding math symbols as shapes. Sorry, I guess you need to either draw those by hand or import them from an external source.

    Hi Patrick, thanks for the video. Same problem here - but one issue still remains for me: although I've selected "source-URL" as an attribute to export from Evernote, the URL won't show up in Apple notes ... this is super crucial for me as I frequently visit the source of my notes! Any idea on how to tackle this problem?

    • @patrickstoeckmann
      @patrickstoeckmann 3 месяца назад

      Unfortunately these won’t be imported. So, if you depend on this and would like to leave Evernote, you need to search for another app. Check out Joplin (joplinapp.org) I think I read somewhere that they are importing source URLs.

    Very helpful thanks a ton man. Please can you help, how to add social media links? Can’t find anywhere on the net not even in that Wikipedia article. Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram. Thanks again for the great efforts and the unique way of making this easy and doable. Cheers.

      @patrickstoeckmann 3 месяца назад

      Well you can add them via X-SOCIALPROFILE. Here an example for Facebook: X-SOCIALPROFILE;type=facebook:facebook.com/myusername. So after the : you enter the URL to your profile page. This works for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn etc. But not for WhatsApp since you don’t have a URL to your profile page there. In WhatsApp you are connected via your phone number. You can find out this and more by entering the fields in a contact on your IOS device, then share/export it to files app and then open the VCF file with a textviewer (I used Textastic).

    • @patrickstoeckmann

      No, you can only put text in a QR code. So the way you could achieve it is by linking to a website from the QR code and on the website you have a form where they enter their contact details and on the confirmation page of your form you present a contact card (VCF file) as a download.

    can you do a tutorial on specifically mind mapping. like the app mind maps automatically makes the nodes by pressing tab and it auto sizes and moves things so perfectly. can we create the same experience in freeform??

    • @patrickstoeckmann
      @patrickstoeckmann 3 месяца назад

      No, it is not possible to replicate that. There is currently no auto-aligning like with all these Mind-Map Tools. You can quickly create any diagram by dragging on the connectors and selecting any of the basic shapes, but you must align them by hand. So, while you can do Mind Maps with Freeform, you should go for other tools if you really want to have the Mind Map experience.

    How did you get the Format menu to stay pinned open to the side in the iPad Pages app? All I get is a drop down that floats over part of the document, and the moment I go to type, it disappears. The ability to keep it pinned there like on the Mac version would be very useful for my workflow. 👍🏻 Nevermind, I enabled the “More Space” scaling setting on my 11” iPad, and now I get that Format menu to stay open! I guess it was a screen size thing. 👍🏻

    Different Solution!!! With the Pencil/pen tool hand writing ends up grouped together unless you intervene and split it up. For example: I take notes in multiple columns on the same board for multiple meetings. In Freeform as you add more handwriting it extends the "grouping" or "layer" to include or add new handwriting to the block of adjacent handwriting. I use freeform exclusively now for ALL note taking and my boards had started to SLOW DOWN with pencil strokes lagging behind by multiple words. I realized ^ that this grouping was happening and it begins to make more sense as to why my iPad is crunching so hard to process new strokes. To see what text is grouped together de-select the apple pencil and just touch an area of text and it'll show you how large the box is around the text. To FIX this I use the Selection Tool to grab a large chunk or whole column of text and choose the separate option which will separate it from other handwriting adjacent to it. Once I do this it helps tremendously and hand writing is back to being very responsive. For some of these notes I have to separate text more than once, it would depend on how expansive your note is. The big plus for me is being able to scan multi-page documents really quickly and automatically import them into my Inbox. That’s ScanSnap and Evernote. I really like Apple Notes and love the way it’s being developed. Not totally convinced I want to ditch Evernote yet though. If I do your video will provide me with an excellent template process to follow. Thanks for sharing.

    • @patrickstoeckmann
      @patrickstoeckmann 4 месяца назад

      I was with you, but stopped using Evernote for scanning years ago, when I needed to share lots of scans (receipts) with a tax consultant on a regular basis. Exporting scans from Evernote is actually a nightmare. So, I reprogrammed my original Evernote ScanSnap (still have it with the Evernote logo on it) to scan to a folder. There I would give it a proper file name using YYYY-MM-DD - Sender name - Type of document as a format and keep it in monthly folders. Then I can easily zip the month and send it to the tax consultant. And since Mac has the excellent Spotlight search I find all documents just as quick as with Evernote. I switched something like 8 years ago and never regretted it.

      Not any more with this mentioned zoom problem. That has been fixed by now. There are however still problems with lag when using lots of handwritings or drawings. Looks like the rendering of these is still taxing the system pretty hard. When it lags depends on the individual config, but I had people who switched their forms from purely handwritten to mostly shaped based and it runs much smoother.
