This is a great video. Thank you very much for making it and sharing it! I have one question regarding the QR Code vCard process regarding item labels. Using the example of the vCard wiki contact data for Simon, after making the QR code for that vCard and importing from the generated QR code, we do not retain the label "work" for Simon's email, it simply reads "email" instead. I have the same problem with the labels not coming through for phone number and url also. Any ideas? I imagine a solution that works with the wiki example would also work for my specific data...
I figured it out, you remove the TYPE= in the example. Try these 4 lines work email and address labels. EMAIL;Privat:simon.perreault@viagenie.ca EMAIL;Work:simon.perreault@home.ca ADR;Label1:;;Heidestrasse 15;Koeln;;51147;Germany ADR;Label2:;;Heidestrasse 17;Koeln;;51147;Germany
Thanks Patrick. I tried that yesterday also, which does fix the issue for OSX and iOS users, but it doesn't seem to work for my Android users. They report that they don't get the intended item labels like "Work", "Mobile", "Privat" etc... I don't have an android device to do any sort of brute force iterative testing for that environment. Have you noticed or heard of the OS having an impact on QR code behavior and proper field identification?
It‘s not about the QR code. That only transports text and will put the same text on any device. But the VCARD Command is interpreted differently on Android devices than on IOS I suppose. Looks like you might need to create a different code for Android, which would be a bummer. But I have no Android devices, so I am not able to help you here. Maybe Android works with the TYPE=Label behind the Email, when Apple does not.
Is there a way to QR to get the user to text you their contact info and or ask additional questions also? So example, marketing card we want them to text their contact info and possibly add our contact info after the text?
No, you can only put text in a QR code. So the way you could achieve it is by linking to a website from the QR code and on the website you have a form where they enter their contact details and on the confirmation page of your form you present a contact card (VCF file) as a download.
I'm trying to set up an inventory tracking system using QR codes at my job, and just learned about this built in shortcut. Company issues us all iphones, so I'm hoping this is something I can figure out how to do.
However, I assume that the QR leads to the contact information and you can change the contact information..... Or is that not possible in the static QR code?
The contact information (in the VCF example in the video) is in the QR code . So, if you change your address you have to generate a new QR code with that new information. However, you can just point the QR code to a website, where you can change the address information. This will work as long as you have the same domain. But this won’t be in VCF format, so visitors would have to input your address manually in your system. Think of the QR code (with the VCF file) as an extension to a business card. When you move you have to print new cards AND create a new QR code.
Thanks for the information but while i created qrcode its works with vCard but is it possible that i can put image or logo inside waiting for your response Many Thanks
@@patrickstoeckmann Thanks for the great Video.I have the same problem, wasn't it supposed to be able to do it with an image (base64)?I tried to convert and it didn´t work either. As they say in Wikipedia (PHOTO;ENCODING=BASE64;TYPE=JPEG:[base64-data]).Thanks a lot.
I never managed to make it work. Even with an Base64 encoded image, the QR code is not created. Maybe there is a size limit (because the text gets quite long with base64 encoding), I don‘t know. There are apps who can do this, but somehow its not yet possible to do this with Shortcuts.
Of course. Use the syntax shortcuts://run-shortcut?name=[name]&input=[input]&text=[text]. More info here: support.apple.com/guide/shortcuts/run-a-shortcut-from-a-url-apd624386f42/ios
As far as I know this is not possible. You can create the link, so that people can point their phone to the QR code and open the webpage, but creating a shortcut is something they need to do individually on their phones.
Yes it is on the iPhone. You need the Shortcuts app from Apple, which should be preinstalled. If somehow you removed it, you can download it from the App Store.
Very helpful thanks a ton man. Please can you help, how to add social media links? Can’t find anywhere on the net not even in that Wikipedia article. Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram. Thanks again for the great efforts and the unique way of making this easy and doable. Cheers.
Well you can add them via X-SOCIALPROFILE. Here an example for Facebook: X-SOCIALPROFILE;type=facebook:facebook.com/myusername. So after the : you enter the URL to your profile page. This works for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn etc. But not for WhatsApp since you don’t have a URL to your profile page there. In WhatsApp you are connected via your phone number. You can find out this and more by entering the fields in a contact on your IOS device, then share/export it to files app and then open the VCF file with a textviewer (I used Textastic).
@@patrickstoeckmannThanks indeed man. You’re very responsive, and you put time and efforts. I really appreciate and you got a sub. I actually tried socialProfile= Tried several variable, non worked and it was frustrating. Then I tried to exporta VCF file of a contact, I’ve done on Mac and opened it with TextEdit l, saw the X- thingy, and could replicate Facebook, twitter and LinkedIn. I need to try on a contact with instagram and RUclips. I tried to export on the phone but didn’t realize I could save it with Files, so you were very helpful especially that I have Textastic (bought long ago, I’m a programmer), and replicated what you did. Thanks again, I’ll make sure to watch every video you publish, your channel is underrated and deserves much more recognition. Keep up the great work and tips you’re providing. Cheers. Frank.
@@patrickstoeckmannI wrote a long message thanking you but for some reason it’s not showing! Thanks indeed. Nice tips. Thanks again. I subbed. Thanks for the nice feedback. Glad I could help you with that. About the channel, I am a bit slow currently with new content, but I will pick up soon. Until then, hope you get some more nuggets from my other videos. Cheers back.
Extremely helpful tutorial Patrick! So many 3rd party applications charging you to create and maintain one! Quick question: Does this QR code stay active till end of time or does it expire? Cheers!
It still does work fine on all my devices. Please check your VCF Code. See this screenshot for comparison. www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/yf0opha7xeq6746al9iqh/Photo-17.08.23-16-41-34.jpg?rlkey=o38by5464qfpu21vny5iy4d69&dl=0

The UI is totally different compare to what you see on the iPad Demo... I can do this on my M2 thats easy very intuitive . Why don't you show us how we see it on the iPhone? Come on Keep it Real🙂

Can I change the information in the created QR code or will I need a need new QR code? thanks!!
A QR code is always static text. So for any changed information you need to create a new QR code.

No, the QR code is text based only. You could however link to a webpage that shows an image.
