    • @yootoob1001001
      @yootoob1001001 2 года назад +8

      Exactly---I am glad that Brad picked up on that right away, because many people who don't usually listen to the music don't. Many bands from the genre used history, literature, current events, etc., in the lyrics, as well as above average vocabulary. Anyone who says metal is for dummies is the one who needs to learn something.
      I'm with Lex---after listening for decades and thinking about it recently, Megadeth for me is #1, Slayer and Metallica tied for #2, and Anthrax in #3 for my Big Four.

      Agreed. Never react to Slayer live (unless you've already heard the studio version). Slayer live has always been about the raw energy of the thing rather than flawless exicution of their music. You can go with the live version for a band like Iron Maiden, but not Slayer.

    I tried for a couple of decades to 'get' Slayer. One of my exes years ago was obsessed with them. Didn't get it at all.
    One day a couple of years back, they came on a random playlist I was listening to in the gym. They absolutely 'clicked' in that moment. I actually found myself dancing a little bit to their little bits of groove in South of Heaven and Seasons in The Abyss during that session, and the groove after the second verse of Angel Of Death. Then I noticed I 'got' all the heavier songs than that that they do that I'd rejected for years.
    Just in time for their final UK show at Download festival. One of the greatest gigs, and pits, I've been to. The insane thing about that pit was is was full of huge guys colliding, and then in the middle of all the chaos you'd find a petite lass in the thick of it without a scratch on her. Pits are amazing things.

I loved Slayer the very second I heard them but years later when ‘Burn my eyes’ by that new fangled band ‘machine head’ was released - I hated it - was probably just the fuss and the hype at that time that put me off to be fair. But then one day maybe a year later I ‘got’ it. I stopped listening to Slayer when Jeff died 😕

    Slayer is the metal band that is that line where it goes from safe and fun metal (nothing wrong with that. I love that stuff too.) straight to not for the faint of heart both musically and lyrically.
    Slayer is insane. Even watching live shows doesn't do it justice. True story. I'm at one of the several Slayer shows I attended. There's like three pits going apeshit on the floor and all around them people are picking other people up to crowd surf to the stage. As if THAT isn't wild enough on it's own you see a group of people just converge on this one spot. A couple seconds later you see a dude in a wheelchair, both his arms straight up giving the horns, being crowd surfed towards the stage.
    People lost their damn minds at Slayer shows on a level you had to see to believe. Best explanation of what Slayer fans are like and what seeing them was like is the comedy routine by Jim Breuer just called "Slayer Fans". It's still one of the funniest things ever because it's 100 percent true!

      Still it ain´t easy to play solos like Slayer especially if you truly know how to play guitar. it´s just like trying to sing out of tune when you´re a good singer. It takes talent to play "bad" solos. EVH wouldn´t have played good Slayer solos, they would have been too good so they would have been awful in the context of slayer. Slayer solos - they are representation of chaos and total mayhem. They are art on their own level.

    Saw some more recent videos from you two before watching this. I love that Lex discovered she's a metalhead. Grinning from ear to ear. And Brad is correct, this is more of a history lesson. A lot of music is written, sung and viewed as though the singer is advocating for or speaking from personal experience. That's frequently not the case with heavy metal.
    I worked with a lady who walked through the back of the shop one day when I was listening to slayer and was flabbergasted. She said, "How do you listen to this? Doesn't this music just make you angry?" I said, "No, this music makes me happy. Listening to something like Justin Bieber makes me angry".
    As far as education goes, I probably learned more from heavy metal music than I did in high school. One exception being a field trip to the holocaust museum. That was eye opening. Don't remember learning much about Josef Mengele though.
    Another history lesson through music was about Marquis de Sade. That was from Exodus in the song Architect of Pain.

As a 49 yo back wen I was young there was so much music and as we grew up into adults we learned to love many many types,, we are the world is x gen,, hands across America,, we grew up with Whitney Houston and Micheal J, as well as Slayer, mega death,, and bands such as minor threat, ministry, the Ramon's,suicidal tendancy, sex pistols, NWA, DR Dre, Snoop, .........
