If you’re getting into Italian literature, I highly recommend The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco! It’s a murder mystery/political intrigue set in a late-medieval monastery with a labyrinthine library. It weaves together history, philosophy, theology, literature, and semiotics - definitely some dark academia vibes
I had no idea this was Italian, always thought it was Portuguese or something. I had to watch the movie almost annually at school lol btw I'm from Brazil
OMG yes! Its amazing I read it back in 2019. Definitely a 5-star read in my opinion!!! I did read the Dutch version, however I believe the English version is just as good;)
Watching your videos has become a slight obsession of mine. Listening to you talk is so soothing and calming. Added to that, I love the fact that your videos are often pretty long. Thank you for making videos!
"The Housekeeper and the Professor" is a masterpiece, it is one of the best books I've ever read and I hope you will like it because it is so warm and beautiful story (I had teary-eyes at the end and it happens very rarely) :)
I second this! I'd like to know your take on Dance Dance Dance tho, I'm still over-thinking whether I'm going to read it or not after finishing A Wild Sheep Chase ;p
It's actually part of The Rat Series by Murakami. It's the fourth book , the first two are novellas "Hear the Wind Sing" & "Pinball, 1973", followed by "A Wild Sheep Chase" and finally "Dance Dance Dance" 👍
Cyrano de Bergerac is the loveliest play I've ever read! Such a beautiful and underrated story. I'm so excited to see you read it! The housekeeper and the professor was also an easy 5 star read. You totally scored this haul!
Hi emmie 💞 If you want to get more into Italian literature I would for sure recommend Italo Calvino! He's one of the most famous and celebrated Italian writers, a lot of his works involve (his perspective on) magical realism, for example "If on a winters night a traveler" or "Cosmicons"... But there are so much more! I really think you could like him 😊 Another one I love is Luigi Pirandello, he investigates themes like absurdity, identity and how the way we perceive ourselves and the way we are perceived are almost never the same
Wow! It's so nice to see someone recommending Calvino! I'm currently buried in his books as I'm writing a paper on his view on the nature of reading and writing. He is incredibly insightful. "If on a winter's night a traveler" especially blew my mind!
I plan to read Murakami chronologically too. I have heard people saying he's a bit problematic when it comes to women characters but his later works are better. So I kind of want to notice the changes in his writing.
He is indeed not that great about writing women and male character's attitudes to women! Personally I only plan on reading/revisiting his better-rated works, because I only have so much time, but it's definitely something to keep an eye out for when reading. I also think his novels are much better than his short stories!
I read a few books of him and I liked them - but it was a few years ago. I read also 'First person singular' and... I was very dissapointed, sadly. I am now curious if my taste changed or it's because of the book itself. I plan to read other his books and reread some of them, so I will check this out :)
Yes, the only Murakami book I’ve read so far is Colourless Tsukuru and although I liked it, the female characters and their development are not significant at all. I plan on reading Kafka on the shore since it’s my new book purchase and my expectations are sky high for this🤞
@@zarfeenhameed2664 (I tried to be as vague as possible but if you don't want to know anything about Kafka on the Shore then don't read this haha) I hope you like Kafka it's such an odd story! I really enjoyed it but unfortunately it had a few sexual scenes that I found to be a little unnecessary, I guess some of them add to the whole oddness of the book but I couldn't really find an actual point to them. And, maybe apart from one female character, the others had little depth and were just there for the male characters' pleasure/"personal growth". Still, I really liked the book and would recommend it as I keep thinking about it. Hope you like it too!
The way you speak about books...🥰🥰🥰 I love your channel...and the diversity of books you choose to read: translated authors, classics, fantasy, middle grade. Its just a pleasure to watch your videos.
I read all four books in the My Brilliant Friend series last year and they were at the top of my list of favourite books for 2020. I listened to them all as audiobooks which I thought were wonderfully narrated.
Emma!! And Cortázar!! In the same frame!! And that EDITION!! Hopscotch is definitely one of the greatest modern classics of the Spanish-speaking canon. I think you will really enjoy it if you liked García Márquez too. They both have this very whimsical way with words that just feels so magical and so beautiful. I can't tell you how many times we've been through Chapter 68 at school! I'm really excited for you to tell us your thoughts on it! Have a great week!! :))
I read both The housekeeper and the professor and Love in the time of cholera and they became some of my favorite books of 2020! I hope you’ll enjoy them as much as I did ☺️ I love your content, I hope you have a nice day 💫
I was watching a ballet video, but you posted! Your videos are so amazing, thank you so much for making them! They’ve helped me so much during a confusing time.
I’ve read The Houskeeper and the Professor as a part of my January 2021 tbr. It was just what you said: beautiful and tragic. The friendship and the pain and the intricate magic of numbers come together and create such a gut wrenching story, i cried when I was finished. I think you’ll love it, Emma!
hopscoth is great because it also has two different ways of reading it, from the first page to the last and also skipping back and forth through the chapters. It changes the story when you read it that way. One of my favorite books 💕💕💕
The ocean at the end of the lane is one of my favourites books, it is indeed magical realism and as a child who grew up surrounded by books and with a deep imagination, this book touched me in a really deep way, also cried a lot reading it 🥺 cant wait to see your toughts about it!
Hello Emma! I'm pretty sure you love Greek mythology and stuffs like that. I also read and love The Song of Achilles and Circe. I am very interested to read more but as a non native speaker, it's really hard for me to directly dive into them .So if u have time, can you do a video dedicated to that whole Greek mythology and history fictions for starters? Sorry if I sound rude. I can understand English quite well but my writing is horrible. Anyway, love u 💕
It’s so good seeing a book tuner rave and consume audiobooks. I have been worried about audiobooks cause I had it in my head that I wasn’t a real reader if I listened to books rather then physically bread them but my health has had other plans This makes me feel normal and like a valid reader
I’m so excited for you to read My Brilliant Friend; you are in for a emotional, heartbreaking but beautiful ride. I read the tetralogy last year and they soon became my favorite books. If you want more italian literature, you can always read anything by Domenico Starnone who is rumored to be Elena’s husband.
I have up until this point never been much of a reader, but recently during the lock down, beyond just going back and forth to work and exercising at home, I started to get interested in sitting down, relaxing and actually reading. I have always felt forced back in high school and college, but ever since graduating college, I became very lazy in the scholastic since. So, not knowing of what to pick up first, I surfed RUclips and came across you channel. Through your beautifully calm presentations of recommended reads I started to get the itch to delve right in. My first pick up was Snow Country (your description of it kind of reminded me of Samurai's Garden, a book I really enjoyed). Digging it so far! So thank you! I am a new subscriber, best choice I have made all year even though we are only 2 weeks in haha. Keep rockin' on! :) oh almost forgot, I’m also reading Hamnet, it’s about Hamlet’s son. Slower paced but a good little bit of history during the times of a plague.
omg yay i looove elena ferrante!! She has so much to say about female resilience, friendship and women's experience in general in the 20thC. Excited for you to read it
Thoughts and Meditations from Gibran is my absolute favorite, I highly recommend it. I collect all the old hardcovers of his, blessed enough to have some first editions. I’m a big Arab literature fan, borderline obsessed honestly. You might also like The Book of Khalid by Ameen Rihani if you haven’t read it, it’s another splendid work of early 20th century American literature, its considered the “first Arab-American novel”
Against Nature was also mentioned in the Julian Barnes book The Man in The Red Coat. As well as influencing Wilde for D Grey character. Against Nature was mentioned in Wilde's trial which probably went against him. At the trial it was called 'the French book with the yellow cover'.
Dance dance dance is after the wild sheep chase. And the wild sheep chase is the last in the rat trilogy which begins in hear the wind sing and then pinball 1973. Thank you for reading murakami I have met almost no one that does. What a beautiful cozy haul. Hope you are well
I also just got a copy of My Brilliant Friend! My mom read the author’s other book The Lying Life of Adults and said that the writing was absolutely marvelous so now we are both reading My Brilliant Friend.
Hi, Emma I just discovered your channel. Just want to tell you, I absolutely love your channel. The way you talk about books is so inspiring. I just had a request for a video on your recommendations of Graphic Novels, if you read them? I would love to get your opinion on them. Thanks!
i loooove your collection of latin american literature and how you're branching out into cortazar! all of our literature is so rich and amazing and each work reflects on its respective era and encapsulates it so beautifully! i really hope you enjoy your time reading them!!

If you want to get more books but you’re limited in funds you should look into thriftbooks! (If you haven’t already). I got a bunch of ancient classics and it was totally worth it. I’ll def be getting more from them
I think that's completely fine! I personally don't let myself indulge too much and I can barely manage 1 book a month without having to cut down on groceries. But yes, I think what matters is how much you appreciate the books- it may be 1 or 100, doesnt matter.
Ahhh Stoner!! I’m absolutely going to read that this year, I’ve only ever heard amazing things about it, too, and it’s been on my list since high school!
Hello Emma, greetings from Argentina! I just wanted to say that the book Hopscotch it´s called that way because the author wrote it so that there are two ways of reading the book, he explains this, I believe, in the first chapter. The reader can follow the chronological order of the chapters or follow the one proposed by the author "hopscotching" and in both ways it makes sense and the story acquires different meanings and results depending in which order you've read it. I hope you enjoy it!
hi emmie! i'm a new subscriber and have just discovered your channel a few days ago! just wanted to thank you for these long, cozy videos :) been trying to get back into reading and your videos definitely help with motivation and are also very relaxing to watch after a long day of online uni - thank you! i hope you're doing well
The Three Bodies Problem is absolutely amazing! My entire friend circle was obsessed with it back in high school. I think you would like it because there was a lot of physics and ethics discussion involved. I don’t know which edition you got, but Three Bodies is actually a series with three novels, so def check the rest out if you book only contains the first of the series!
I'm so excited I think my huge reading slump is finally over, I didn't read much in 2020 for obvious reasons but now I want to read everything ! Your videos always inspire me (especially your hauls hehe) :)
I picked up Lord Jim as well recently! I highly recommend the movie, which is why I picked up the book! So much to think about even after watching just the movie, so can’t wait to delve into the book.
Hi Emma, here’s some Italian literature that you might be interested in: The Late Mattia Pascal by Luigi Pirandello, Cosmicomics by Italo Calvino, Novecento by Alessandro Baricco ✨
haha oh my gosh even I don't have that any Gibran books. I know you got all these and that's A LOT but I recommend also keeping an eye on "A Tear And A Smile". It's a really good one
Get ready for My Brilliant Friend because it is an emotional rollecoaster. I really love Elena Ferrante’s writing style, everything seems to alive and vibrant. Her characters are so complicated yet poetic, It’s incredible. If you want to read more italian novels I recommend you anything by the truly genius writer Italo Calvino, especially If on a winter’s night a traveler, his masterpiece. Then on the top of my head I would suggest Arturo’s Island by Elsa Morante, The Moon and the Bonfires by Cesare Pavese, anything by Pirandello, Dino Buzzati’s Short Stories, Ties by Domenico Starnone and Ferocity by Nicola Lagioia.
this video popped up in my recommended, but im so glad it did! everything about you and your video is so warm and cozy. you seem like such a sweet person. because of this video i wanna get into reading again :)
Argentine over here! So glad to see someone reading works from our end of the world :) Hopscotch is Cortazar's most famous work (you have two different ways of reading it so you can reread it and get a different experience) I really enjoy his short stories too. If you end up enjoying his writing I can recommend All Fires the Fire from him
I would recommend wide sargasso sea too if you are reading Jane Eyre. It is the story of the ' Mad Woman in the attic'. There is also a realy interesting essay bundle about it.
I didn't read The Human Stain but I did see the movie (didn't know it was based on a book). The movie was fantastic so I can only imagine how great the book will be!
I’ve always believed that the best Marquez book is The Chronicles of a Death Foretold. Not only is it a masterpiece in writing; but it’s truly a remarkable work of timeless art! I hope you’re able to read it and feel the same!
idk if it's also for the english version but there's 2 ways to read hopscotch! you can read it normally and you stop kinda halfway through or you can follow the chapter order list that's in the book. Honestly I tried reading it the second way but I lost track of the plot 😭
ooh, so many good picks that are also on my TBR! glad to see you're getting more into Ishiguro, he continues to be one of my favourite authors ever. very interested to hear your thoughts on Stoner, I've heard so much about it.
EMMA! (i am sorry i peeked to the description and found Stoner in the list) EMMAAAA!!!! I AM SO EXCITED FOR YOU TO READ IT!! Please please film a vlog while reading it! One of my favorite books!!!
Cyrano de Bergerac is so good and one of my favorite plays of all time! I think you're going to love it. Once you've read the original, you should definitely compare it to the modern adaptation by Martin Crimp into more of a beat/spoken-word poetry style. They are both phenomenal!
The Housekeeper and the Professor is absolutely stunning. After reading I was weeping all night about it, very emotional, draining and at the same time cosy read, hope you'll like it!
Hi Emma!! The book by Julio Cortázar is supposed to read not in the cronological chapter order (like 1, 2, 3, 4...) I don´t know if it´s on your edition, but you can search that if you want to. I wil read Hopscotch this year too and I´m so excited!! Very happy to see you reading more latinamerican books, we have so many wonderfull authors!
I just got the Paper Mill Press edition of Phantom of the Opera. It is STUNNING. I wasn't sure if you had it already or not...I needed a new copy because the other copy I had was too tiny to even read it...Which is why I've never read it. It is one of my favorite musicals though! I've started it now with my new fancy edition. :)
Thank you for this video. Your voice is soooo calming ! I love your RUclips channel and I feel so excited to here your future opinion about those new amazing books ! ☺️ je t’envoie beaucoup de bonne ondes ! Bisous ! ❤️
Cyrano de Bergerac is one of my favourite plays 🤩 Really looking forward to hearing what you think of it ! I hope you have a great time reading all these wonderful books
Hi, Emma! I'm going over all these lovely book hauls of yours that I've missed from the past months in between breaks from work (I'm a translator!) and they really bring me peace of mind and always cheer me up! Anyhow, I am so curious to know what you think about Hopscotch, so I hope you can tell us more about that when you get to reading it! I actually got my hands on a beautiful edition of it this Christmas and I'm so excited to read it as well. Being Latin American myself, I get really excited and motivated when I see fellow literature lovers approach Latin American texts! Especially with mister Cortazar here and all of his amazing experimentations with the narrative. I hope you enjoy hopscotching around the chapters too :) all the best from Mexico.
So many classics I want to read this year, you've given me a few more to add to my list. I was going to go down the path of Virginia Woolf but might add Oscar Wilde and I was thinking of giving Anne Bronte a try.
*Emma uploads a book haul video*
my wallet: ah shit here we go again
If you’re getting into Italian literature, I highly recommend The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco!
It’s a murder mystery/political intrigue set in a late-medieval monastery with a labyrinthine library. It weaves together history, philosophy, theology, literature, and semiotics - definitely some dark academia vibes
That sounds amazing, I will defiantly pick that up
thank you for this recommendation, it sounds like The Da Vinci Code except without sucking really bad

hi emmie! i'm a new subscriber and have just discovered your channel a few days ago! just wanted to thank you for these long, cozy videos :) been trying to get back into reading and your videos definitely help with motivation and are also very relaxing to watch after a long day of online uni - thank you! i hope you're doing well
The Three Bodies Problem is absolutely amazing!
You should 10000% narrate audio books you have the perfect voice for it and the fact that you’re passionate about literature would make it even better
I picked up Lord Jim as well recently! I highly recommend the movie, which is why I picked up the book! So much to think about even after watching just the movie, so can’t wait to delve into the book.
Hi Emma, here’s some Italian literature that you might be interested in: The Late Mattia Pascal by Luigi Pirandello, Cosmicomics by Italo Calvino, Novecento by Alessandro Baricco ✨
thank you thank you☺️💕
also Silk and Ocean Sea by Alessandro Baricco!🦋
haha oh my gosh even I don't have that any Gibran books.
Then on the top of my head I would suggest Arturo’s Island by Elsa Morante, The Moon and the Bonfires by Cesare Pavese, anything by Pirandello, Dino Buzzati’s Short Stories, Ties by Domenico Starnone and Ferocity by Nicola Lagioia.
my brilliant friend is the first of four books following the lives of Elena and Lila, there is also an HBO adaptation that is just spectacular :)
this video popped up in my recommended, but im so glad it did! everything about you and your video is so warm and cozy. you seem like such a sweet person. because of this video i wanna get into reading again :)

And im so happy to see it finally happening.
U r such a queen em.

Much love from India 🌹
STONER. A wonderful book. I could not stop reading it though it grew more and more sad with each page. John Williams is just a brilliant writer.
Thank you for some new reads to add to by TBR. I would say start with Love in the Time of Cholera. It is one of my favorites!
I just bought The Three Body Problem and I am so excited!!
I’m 50 pages through and it’s so good!!
@@emmiereads Sounds like a February book now hahah
Argentine over here! So glad to see someone reading works from our end of the world :) Hopscotch is Cortazar's most famous work (you have two different ways of reading it so you can reread it and get a different experience) I really enjoy his short stories too. If you end up enjoying his writing I can recommend All Fires the Fire from him
I would recommend wide sargasso sea too if you are reading Jane Eyre. It is the story of the ' Mad Woman in the attic'. There is also a realy interesting essay bundle about it.
I love your voice, is so soothing and cozy!!
I thought I was the only one that knew about snow country. That is such a beautiful book
Yayy fourth cherish your literary taste so much
After Dark (Le passage de la nuit en français) is also one of my favorites Murakami’s works ! Great video as always :)
I just found your channel yesterday and I’m in Love with your book recommendations. I Just started reading last year :)
Your voice is so calming 💕 ...lots of love to youuu :))
EMMA! (i am sorry i peeked to the description and found Stoner in the list) EMMAAAA!!!! I AM SO EXCITED FOR YOU TO READ IT!! Please please film a vlog while reading it! One of my favorite books!!!
haha will do!!
I love all of your videos so much! Thank you for uploading~
Cyrano de Bergerac is so good and one of my favorite plays of all time! I think you're going to love it. Once you've read the original, you should definitely compare it to the modern adaptation by Martin Crimp into more of a beat/spoken-word poetry style. They are both phenomenal!
The happy prince and devoted friend are my favourite short stories from Oscar Wilde, I hope you enjoy x
oh my god I absolutely loved Love in the Time of Cholera! I am so excited to see what you think of it!!!
The Human Stain is an absolute treat. Slade House is also excellent, but it won't make as much sense if you don't read The Bone Clocks first. Enjoy.
How do you have such a calming voiceeeeee!
Grogu and books! What's not to love :)
Greetings from Argentina 🇦🇷 I'm a new follower and I love that you have read Julio Cortázar 💜

Cyrano de Bergerac is one of my favourite plays 🤩 Really looking forward to hearing what you think of it ! I hope you have a great time reading all these wonderful books
I am currently reading Frankenstein!! I am really liking it so far!❤❤
