I really have to appreciate you pronounciation of all the names. No matter what language, you say it how it’s supposed to be pronounced and I really love that.
I feel like the more times you mention the same book in your videos, the more I feel like I need to read it. What a gift you have of persuasion, Emma! (see that Austen nudge there?) I would have never in a million years picked up the Illuminae Files on my own, but hearing you talk about it with such adoration has absolutely convinced me. I love anything that uses multimedia formats well.
Since I see you will be reading Solaris you MUST watch Andrei Tarkovsky’s adaptation of the novel!!!! It is one the most engrossing cinematic experiences I’ve ever had. Tarkovsky in general is probably the greatest director of all time - all of his films are imbued with themes of life and death, time and memory, and what makes us human. You would also probably love The Mirror as well (which is actually my favorite of his). I’m a major foreign film fanatic, so I will always be pushing my fav directors on readers lol
I just found your channel today 😊 You are so soft spoken and a pleasure to listen to, your articulation makes me want to read every single book that you mentioned.
I'm so excited that you are getting into Stepphenwolf and Master and Magarita! These 2 books accompanied my high school years, they are very special to me. Can't wait to hear what you think!
I read After Dark after hearing you rave about it I’m so glad I did. It was my first Murakami book idk where to go from here so I’m reading Men without Women rn
Victoria ahh so happy you picked it up and loved it!! I’ve heard Sputnik Sweetheart is another good one to start with but I haven’t tried it yet. Kafka on the Shore is more magical realism that sounds so interesting so I think that’s the one I might try next!! 💕💕
If you end up enjoying his short story collections, After the Quake has been my favorite! It has all the wistfulness and feelings of solitude and ennui and personal dissection that I love in Murakami.
Ahhh, there's so many good books in this haul! Also, I'm so glad that you picked up that translation of The Master and Margarita as the other one is so dreadful that people have ended up hating the book itself just because of the translation. Can't wait to hear your thoughts of it, I really want to reread that masterpiece!
My great grandfather, Donald woods, was in the movie so should read it as well and rewatch again. Your voice is also very calming and great book suggestions.
i just finished one hundred years of solitude and it was beautiful! i think if you loved it as much as i did you would also really like isabel allende's the house of the spirits, i read and studied it at school and it has very similar themes and vibes. It's magical realism in its purest form!
I ordered After Dark two days ago because you kept raving about it so... it'll be here on Friday! The last korean novel i read was The vegetarian by Han Kang and it's.. dark af but very good.
Do you have a kindle or do you just love physical books? I prefer physical but they take up so much space now that my sister got me a kindle, also a lot of classics are free on kindle which I love. Also, I adore your voice
Once you read Solaris I'd definitely recommend watching the film adaptation directed by Andrei Tarkovsky!! He's probably my favorite director of all time and his films always stick with me. I haven't read the book yet but it's going to be one of the next books I pick up, because I love the movie so much. It sounds like the film is pretty true to the book, too. And if not, it's worth the watch anyway. I'm typically not a huge fan of sci-fi films but Tarkovsky is like nothing else :)
I'm obsessed with your channel since I subscribed... Thank you for such incredible and unique content ! ;) I'm also a fan of Murakami and Rilke writing ! I highly recommend you to read The Monk and Steppenwolf, two of my favourites ! Almost psychedelic at times ! I'm impatient to hear your thoughts on those ! I want so much to delve in the Master and Margarita this year, I'm so hyped for it ! And you gave me the desire to read the novel of Mishima, I'm so intrigue by his work (I'm only read The Temple of the Golden Pavillon and The Sound of the Waves, so incredible !). The Autobiography of Red is translated in French this september, I'm here for it. PS : I'm sorry for my bad english, I'm just some French girl with poor language skills...
The people who say The Monk is a wild ride are correct. I couldn't put it down. I think for me the most disturbing part about this book is that it made me want to root for the Monk even though I knew what he wanted was immoral and that I shouldn't want him to succeed.
I kind of agree - I was hoping he’d realise some ‘sin’ is justified like in the case of Agnes :) sort of like being a more moral and human character but whoaaaaa what a trippy trippy trip
Hi What a nice and inspiring Video.I'm much older than you and I have read so many books in my life already but I always find some interesting books on your Channel.Master and Margarita was very fascinating for me while I was reading this when I was a Teenager. Steppenwolf lately but I didint like it :(Maybe I will like some other books of Hesse) ..This book with the Castle sounds great.
Hi Emma. I love to hear you talk about books. You always inspire me to read more ❤️ Your edition of The Master and Margarita is stunning! I would like to recommend a reading, a book called The House of The Spirits by Chilean writer Isabel Allende. I believe you will like it. Hugs :)
As an Argentine, I’m currently reading Amor en Tiempos de Cólera (Love in Times of Colera) by Gabriel García Marquez for school and I definitely recommend it from what I’ve read so far :))
I've been meaning to pick up so many more of Marquez's works - I know there's a really stunning illustrated edition of that one coming out this year and I might just preorder it!
If you love magical realism so much, perhaps you should check out Salman Rushdie's 'Midnight's Children' or his 'Satanic Verses'. Unfortunately, I just can't get through Rushdie's writing, though I've tried multiple times, but maybe it's something for you :)
“Taking butt and kicking names”. Lol I died 🤣. You look so cute in this video 🥺💕. Oh have you read obsidio yet? The last book in the illuminae files. 💕
genuine question: I thought magical realism was an exclusively Latin American genre... idk i think I heard that somewhere? can Russian or Asian literature also fit in this category?
What I've heard is that the idea of magical realism came from Germany but didn't become an actual art form until much later in Latin America in the 1940s (I'm not entirely positive on that) so technically magical realism originated from Latin America (which you might've been thinking of) but that doesn't mean it is only strictly a Latin American genre. People from around the world write magical realism! I hope this helps and makes sense! I apologize if this is just a jumbled mess!! I am often quite garbage at explaining stuff.
* e m m i e * *face plant* I realised that while watching another video of yours. Apologies for the mistake! New subscriber error.. I have a whole list of books to pick up based on your videos already. Thank you!
I really have to appreciate you pronounciation of all the names. No matter what language, you say it how it’s supposed to be pronounced and I really love that.
I noticed that too. It literally made my heart warm when I heard polish names pronounced right. In a "awwww you didn't have to" kind of warm :p
Your voice is so soothing 🌊
irem thank you so much💚

I totally agree!
I was literally going to write the same comment
I agree too. You are passionate but not overexcitable .

yall!! don't forget Norwegian Wood!!
If you end up enjoying his short story collections, After the Quake has been my favorite! It has all the wistfulness and feelings of solitude and ennui and personal dissection that I love in Murakami.
I would recommend Kafka on the shore or a wild sheep chase :)
Oh and the wind up bird chronicle!!

I totally relate to your obsession with After Dark. I'd advise you to read Sputnik Sweetheart! It's in the same league as After Dark in my opinion :D

Beautiful collection and loved the cover of A tale of two cities

It's kicking butt and taking names! Love Sailor Moon! It's what got me into Shojo manga.
