Hi! Love from Japan 🗾🇯🇵👘 I’m currently learning English by myself and trying to read English literature as well. On re-reading The Secret History - I liked it the first time I read it, but the second time made it an all-time favourite for me. I was also surprised at how much I'd forgotten! So I recommend re-reading it as an experience :-)
Oops, commenting again because The Goldfinch is everything. One of my favorite books. Boris is one of the most interesting side characters I've ever read. And, side note, the movie is quite disliked, but extremely true to the novel, so if you like the novel, you'll most likely enjoy the movie--and the cast is spot on.
Lynn if you like boris i would definitely give david copperfield a try! boris and theo’s relationship is loosely based on the relationship between david copperfield and steerforth!!
@@sarahsperusals Yes! Also one of my favorites of all time! I love Dickens. Not a great human, but a fantastic author. Great Expectations is also wonderful if you haven't read it. Thank you!
sarah's perusals hi, not to seem annoying but could you please explain to me why Dickens is a bad person? I don’t know much about him only that his father went to jail for his depts (I think) and Dickens had to work to support the family. Please tell me I’m quite interested!
グール after he got married and had ten kids he started to resent his wife for the “financial burden of his kids” and then cheated on her, eventually left her. then he did the modern day equivalent of calling your ex “crazy” by publishing that all his marital problems had been his wife’s fault. eventually he discouraged even his kids from associating with their mother. it was just unnecessarily cruel imo. it’s reflected a bit in david copperfield but he writes a simplified version of it where he doesn’t look like an asshole lol. also he was extremely rude to hans christian andersen. there’s a lot to it, and it’s actually pretty interesting. i would look into it!!
I just came across your channel a few days ago and I absolutely love your content, I've been binge-watching your videos! I love how calm but enthusiastic you are, we share so many qualities that I wish we were friends! Also, The Metamorphosis is absolutely phenomenal (as is pretty much all of Kafka). It's very dark, very bizarre, jarring, and also heart-wrenching, and I actually cried after I read it the first time. Since you seem to enjoy all of these things, I would highly, highly recommend it. Can't wait to see what you think of it!
I've been intrigued by The Bell Jar for quite some time. Thanks for reminding me! I'll pick it up soon! Ofc very curious what you'll think about Convenience Store Woman! That was a fast read for me. And, Tao Te Ching was amazing for me, read it twice already this year! I am excited for your upcoming reading vlogs and wrap-ups!!!
Please make sure to watch the movie of The Remains of the Day, too. It's a wonderful Merchant-Ivory film starring Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson, with a small role for Christopher Reeve. It's up there with Howards End, though slightly less well-known. ETA: So glad to see you're reading Shakespeare. I wish more people did. Julius Caesar is incredible; Twelfth Night is good, but not on the same level. And those Folger Shakespeare Library editions are marvelous; I love having the footnotes on the left-facing page.
Grendel is without a shadow of a doubt my favorite book of all time. What Grendel has in its pages have stayed with me to this day. I need to read it again.
The metamorphosis is such an amazing story. I love the message and how it makes you meditate a lot about life and how we treat each other once you finish reading. Hope you enjoy it
8:54 this is a great idea, I personally started reading Dostoyevski chronologically but I must say it not very easy, anyways I am doing alright, just maybe I feel a bit lost in a village in Russia in the middle of 19. century 🙃🚶🏾
i really love how passionate and committed you are to your reading🥺🥺🥺 i showed this video to my mom and said “look, ma, she’s my girlfriend, isn’t she stunning?” and she said that “she’s really cute,” so when’s our wedding?
A great collection! Just finished the Goldfinch (took 4 days) and it was the first book I've craved to read each day, getting completely lost in and having no awareness of time passing, since the pandemic began and my attention span shortened a bit. Beautifully written. And the Bell Jar is my favorite book of all time, kept pausing to highlight quotes which felt like she was writing about me.
Charming presentation... I await the Devil's Coming by Mary Maclane is stunning so dark yet so beautifully written. Zuleika Dobson by the incomparable Max Beerbohm hilarious. All the best ☮️ You look so 19th century...love it!
I loved it too and it was totally different to the play so am glad I read the book first . It's not on this film but also totally loving The Divine Comedy by Dante.
Oh, I need to buy The Monsters of Templeton NOW! I have a book out that involves a lake monster and a professor of linguistics + some gothic undertones. So Lauren Groff's novel sounds a perfect read for me. Great book haul, Emmie. Thanks!
emmie (hi!❤️) I read the goldfinch last year and I don't have enough words to describe how much I loved it. The story, the concepts, the style, the characters... I just hope you'll love it as much as I did! And the last hundred pages or so were pure poetry to me 😍
I would love to know what you think about the Goldfinch. I love Donna Tartt. All the books seem so interesting, I think I'll have to add more books to my long tbr list lol I love you're videos Emma, you bring so much peace to my days 😭❤️
Ok. Pretty sure this is the first ever video I've seen of this channel (?), and I'm only 3.5 minutes in, but already hooked. Phantom and Korean?? Those are my thiiings! Ok, on with the rest of the video..
Oh my goodness, Toni Morrison references Grendel (the book) a lot in her essay on Grendel and his mother, and I've been dying to read it ever since! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on it!
I love Grendel! We had to read it for class and I was pleasantly surprised. Very cynical and existential, so not exactly for everyone. I also really liked Remains of the Day! Kazuo Ishiguro is always great. The Goldfinch is on my TBR and I'm curious to see how you feel about it. I've read The Secret History but didn't really love it.
i read the remains of the day for school this year, actually the main character leaves darlington hall for a break to go visit an old coworker, and while on that trip he reminisces on his years there
I knew Pablo Neruda will make a cameo in this vlog. Omg our reading taste is so the same. Huhu. Also, Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki is really gooood. If you haven’t started with his Rat Series, it’s really interesting. You can definitely see how he started with his writing. ❤️
Aaahh I’m so happy to see you haul David Copperfield! I read it recently as my first ever dickens book and I absolutely adored it! It was so fantastic and Charles dickens’ writing is masterful. I cant wait to hear your thoughts about it! Xxxx

That macmillan edition of The phantom of the opera y so beautiful!! I think I'll buy it too. Can't wait to hear your opinion about The remains of the day, I've been dying to read it
Pablo Neruda’s work is almost breathtakingly raw and beautiful. Apparently he was a horrible person in real life, but he wrote like a dream. I really hope you read and enjoy them. I don’t hold with “cancel culture” (which basically happens anytime someone says or does something that modern thought says is wrong) and certainly not against someone who’s already been dead for almost 50 years. He’s paid the ultimate price for whatever he did, and the work left behind is truly beautiful and deserving of praise, even if the man who wrote it isn’t.
If you love the poetry of Pablo Neruda, you would love his houses. There are three, one in the capital called La Chascona, and teo on the coust in Isla Negra and another in San Sebastian, Valparaiso. Hi loved the sea as much he loved women.
Hi! I love your videos :) I just wanted to warn you, as a SJM fan, you may need to push through Throne of Glass. For me, I didn't really start to ~love~ love the depth of the characters and plot until book 3.
Hey! Would you maybe consider making a video, where you talk about your preferred genre throughout your years of reading?? It would be cool to hear your transformation in literature :))
The Phantom of the Opera was one of the classic books that I have studied when I was in high school. Have to say it's one of my favourite books 👻 Btw, you could watch Korean dramas if you want to learn Korean language. You can grasp basic knowledge on how the language works by watching their TV shows.
Two books that got me back to reading Seabuiscuit and Ruffian i was browsing on the book section and i ran across a book on Seabiscuit i thought to myself now that looks like an interesting book and i bought it and took it home and i read it through and i really enjoyed it and then at a local library i saw a book on Ruffian and also enjoyed that book
I also enjoy Japanese authors, Out by Natsuo Kirino is really good as well as The graveyard Apartment by Mariko Koike. Glad I found your channel! Carrie
Lol it would be easy for you to read the Korean translation of Phantom of the Opera once you get the hang of the language. You’ll be able to pick out words and phrases because you know what it is at this point in the book in English.
Read Convenience Store Woman last week. There’s definitely more than meets the eye in that one. Would also recommend reading Murakami in order, if possible. I do feel like there’s a strong evolutionary arc to his work. And speaking of Japanese authors, you might want to add Banana Yoshimoto’s work to your list to check out (if you haven’t already). - Adding Iliac Creat to mine.
Only been watching your videos for a bit but I would say, I definitely don’t think Throne of Glass will be much your taste but I think it’s always worth giving a chance. I would also VERY HIGHLY recommend beginning with “The Assassins Blade,” the stories in there were published one a month leading up to the release of Throne of Glass in 2012 and create such a greater, holistic view of the world, and the situation we find Celaena in as well as a lot more context for her character. I think when tou read The Assassins Blade you get a generally way better appreciation for the situation present in Throne of Glass at its opening. There is a debate regarding whether “novellas” should be required reading in a series and personally I feel like the term novella only describes a story shorter than the fuller length novels and if an author says that the novellas are required reading then they are, but that’s just my opinion. The Assassins Blade though definitely will give you a way better look into the world and I would highly recommend starting there :)!
Oh God not The Metamorphosis!😱 I hate that book so much! I had to read it in high school and i had nightmares lol. Can't help it. And the least (bad?) thing about it is the giant cockroach guy.
Hi there! The Remains of the Day is a wonderful book. It was the winner of the Booker prize when it was first published and author himself was awarded the Nobel in 2017.
Hi emmie! First of all I want to say how much I love your videos and analyses as a fellow classics lover hahaha. Next I wanted to tell you that I'm also learning Korean and after a lot of struggles with duolingo I started using the Talk to me in Korean books ft the soundcloud and I highly recommend them! Funny enough I'm also a huge lover of Murakamis works,in fact colourless is the first book I read of him when I was in a very very dark place mental health wise and I was trying to figure out what was wrong with me, this being said I wanted to give you (anyother person reading this interested on said book) some trigger warnings about assault and mental health in general, both a bit graphic, that may come in handy because for me they were quite a surprise hahaha nonetheless is an amazing piece or art. Love from spain xx
If you want to add to your Phantom collection I have a Puffin Classics edition I’d be happy to send to you. I’m not going to keep it. The cover is a skull-like face with glowing eyes! Also if you like Ishiguro I really recommend his novel “The Buried Giant”. It’s not one I hear mentioned as much but I thought it was fantastic. It’s a fantasy, set in a fictional post-Arthurian England!
_The Metamorphosis_ ,like _Dracula_ , _the Bell Jar_ etc, is something you must read but honestly is not a particularly good book. _Grendel_ is marvelous tho ofc "Beowulf" is a pre-requisite. As for Poe, I disagree with the way he led his life but there's no denying his power as a writer. "Twelfth Knight" is better in performance. There are many sight gags that don't always reach a reader. All-in-all, I'd say it's a pretty good haul - enjoy, and thx for posting.
Hi Emma! I was just wondering if you have ever attended a showing of Phantom of the Opera? Years ago, my best friend and I went to one at The Pantages in Toronto and it was incredible. We were in seats right under the huge chandelier (it was interesting and a little bit scary!). We're in The States and we took a train to and from there, it was magical :o)
We had to write about a production of Metamorphosis for Gcse Drama and loved the story but I haven't read the book. Kafka intrigues me but I feel like I will have many existential crisis' whilst reading his novels. 😂😂
Love your haul! You will have a great time, I have read some of them. A recommendation: Como Agua para Chocolate (like water for Chocolate) by Laura Esquivel is a wonderful, magical realism, love Mexican history with a lot of food magic in it. I really think you will enjoy it. Be well! Xx.
ooh!! I just discovered your channel and it's so cool to know that one of your favorite books is phantom because it's also my favorite 💞 your new editions of the book are beautiful! and also, have you read the david coward translation?
about metamorphosis you should consider the fact that Kafka was abused by his father, it has a very strong influence in his writing. Also, don’t ask me why but I found that book hilarious
Wow - such amazing novels! The Iliac Crest sounds fascinating! I recently got The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro - looking forward to reading it cause I read Never Let Me Go about 6 years ago and I loved it so much - I think you would too actually, have you read it?
yay for the remains of the day! I'm very excited to hear your thoughts. also, I know murakami is loved by a lot of people, but I find his depiction of women quite disgusting, especially with his latest works. the book you showed here was the last one I read before I decided to never read any of his books again. of course, I understand people can like and enjoy whatever they want to as long as they're not harming anyone. but I felt the need to say something, since I did not find fault in his work until people pointed out why he was so problematic. that being said, I hope you have a wonderful week. if you ever want to practice korean I can help♡
17:23 The Nobel Prize for literature is for an author's lifetime of work, it's not for a book. Remains of the Day won the 1989 Man Booker Prize and Ishiguro won the Nobel Prize in 2017
I feel like if anybody has a favorite book that is also a classic, they are instantly blessed. They can buy the same book over and over again in the various different editions for the rest of their lives.

I've read Convenience Store Woman around June and it turned out to have so much more depth to it than I was expecting. Some of the twists in the story are extremely dark, but overall I do believe that this truly is a book about happiness and not fitting in society while still finding a way to enjoy your life. I don't know if this was the author's way to critique our consumer society, but it definitely strikes as that at times and creates a space for the reader to reflect about the issue. Really hope you enjoy reading this one! x

Just loving everytime she says chao ❤️ greetings from Venezuela
Omg the goldfinch is one of my favorite books of all time😫🥺
Only been watching your videos for a bit but I would say, I definitely don’t think Throne of Glass will be much your taste but I think it’s always worth giving a chance. The Assassins Blade though definitely will give you a way better look into the world and I would highly recommend starting there :)!
omg i read the goldfinch last week and i absolutely LOVED IT
Oh God not The Metamorphosis!😱 I hate that book so much! I had to read it in high school and i had nightmares lol. Can't help it. And the least (bad?) thing about it is the giant cockroach guy.
I just love your channel so far 📚✒
Hi there!
The Remains of the Day is a wonderful book. It was the winner of the Booker prize when it was first published and author himself was awarded the Nobel in 2017.
i did not reach to see if there is stephen king books on your library, greeting from Argentina!
I see Lovecraft on that shelf. You should try Thomas Ligotti
Emmie, I bought my favorite manga last month and it came in the mail - I now own my favorite manga in German. It happens to the best of us 🙃
I love your videos so much !!
thank you so much
We had to write about a production of Metamorphosis for Gcse Drama and loved the story but I haven't read the book. Kafka intrigues me but I feel like I will have many existential crisis' whilst reading his novels. 😂😂
It's a very short book, and he writes very clearly, so definitely give it a try!
"Grendel" is freaking AMAZING!!! Highly recommend to give it a go :)
I've heard such good things and I'm sooo excited!
Yes, The Remains of the Day (and the film is amazing too)
Seconded!
Love your haul! You will have a great time, I have read some of them. A recommendation: Como Agua para Chocolate (like water for Chocolate) by Laura Esquivel is a wonderful, magical realism, love Mexican history with a lot of food magic in it. I really think you will enjoy it. Be well! Xx.
I have the full collection of Edgar Allan Poe's works and they're so amazing
I haven't read it yet but I'm so looking forward to it!
Could you please send me a link of this hardbound edition of The Bell Jar. Nowhere can i find this particular edition. Thanks..
yay for the remains of the day!
Holy $&!/! I am literally reading the illac crest while listening to your video lmao! I hope you like it!
I loved this!
Can't wait to hear what you think of the Goldfinch!
Ahhh perfect end to my day😌💗
17:23 The Nobel Prize for literature is for an author's lifetime of work, it's not for a book. Remains of the Day won the 1989 Man Booker Prize and Ishiguro won the Nobel Prize in 2017
