A large proportion of population in this part of China are decedents of refugees of AD1127 war. During the war, China lost its northern capital and two (father - son) emperors. The surviving Song re-established its capital in Hangzhou and becomes known as Southern Song in Chinese history. One was in the household regiment of fleeing prince who crowned first emperor of Southern Song enroute after his father and elder brother were captured by invading enemy. The other already moved south before the war but went back north as a volunteer in the army defending the capital. Since the end of war, both families have settled and lived in Zhejiang mountain valleys for close to 900 years.

This episode almost made me cry! There are so many familiar scenes. 80% of Chinese used to live in communities like this: a village, some rice paddies, a temple nearby, a small market that opens twice a month for trading.
The clothes worn by those aunties are called "海青" (literally meaning: deep blue like the sea, where "青" originally refers to green, but here it is interpreted as blue, as the term "青出于蓝胜于蓝", can encompass both colors). This attire is associated with Han Buddhism and is specifically worn during worship ceremonies. The name originates from a bird found in Northeast China called "海东青" (literally meaning blue eastern sea), a relatively small yet fierce raptor. The garment is named after this bird because its wide sleeves, when walking, resemble the outspread wings of the 海东青. There is a poem by Li Bai that goes, “翩翩舞广袖,似鸟海东来’”(Gracefully dancing with broad sleeves, resembling a bird arriving from the eastern sea.")
It's more like 青 originally encompass both green and blue. The colour spectrum is a gradient, we need to be trained to recognise the different hues in the spectrum. In the evolution of almost all languages, we can see that the words for dark (black) and bright (white) always appear the earliest, followed by red, yellow, then green/blue, and violet (proper blue) is usually the last. Some language (vietnamese for example) still have the same word for green and blue, and they differentiate it by saying leaf-green or sky-green
@@CjxJamie In ancient Chinese, the term "蓝" originally referred to a type of plant used for dyeing, but over time its meaning gradually expanded to include color in general. Meanwhile, "青" at that time represented a relatively broad spectrum of colors, possibly encompassing what we now identify as green (青草), blue (青天), and black (青丝). Since the term "海东青" has been in use for quite some time, it has persisted to the present day. However, the meaning of "青" has undergone some changes today, and it is not commonly used to describe the color blue.

Time has stood still for the better and preserved some "majestic" as you say, in out of the way villages not on foreign tourist radar. With the cottage industries such as (mochi) I known as childhood treat and occasional adult also - ahum. Name of mazitum for comparison on google threw out a blank😂You do have some indiana jones in your veins, an adventurer with in the know😉.Now that I know you can cook (sweet potato noodles ?) people may invite themselves to a meal, counting me😋😛Did you asked grandma her age Katherine?
Loved this episode - thank you for making it. I wonder if you wouldn't mind sharing some information about how to get to Guoqing Temple as a solo traveller. I plan to visit southern Zhejiang in the summer but can't find much info about public transportation (my preferred form of transportation) online from where I am, i.e. U.S. Thanks in advance!
High speed rail to 天台山 station , then take a taxi to 国清寺, it’s only about 15-20 minutes
If you want to take a bus , use baidu maps , it has the most updated bus information but not sure if you know Chinese . The busses would be a bit difficult to figure out if you don’t know Chinese , metro and train are easy
I remember visiting Fuzhou almost five years ago, and while walking in the Fuzhou National Forest Park I saw a sign saying that there's an ancient road somewhere in the hills, that was built during the Song dynasty and was used mainly for post delivery purposes. Unfortunately I didn't have much time to get to that road, but thanks to your video I can get an idea of what it looks like, I believe they're all parts of the same Song-built road network.
Hahaha that lady at the market telling the old man that your Chinese was better than his was priceless 😂
With all the BS going on in the world I really wish I could just run off and live my life in peace in a quiet rural Chinese mountain village. Katherine is truly living the dream.
I like this video very much. Your videos always very nice to watch.👍👍👍
wow that tree is just splendid ‼️🎉
even grandma is using QR code selling her humble potato noodles!
The old lady was so happy to see you again. Love potatoe noodles, so springy.
Another fantastic never seen places of China of old in this modern era. Only you can produce such video of China of places never seen of people and things never shown. Is am fascinated I am thrilled to see the gems you show each time you post. As for the temple so in isolated places dotting the landscape, it reminded me of my old home and the knock back, what memories it brings me. Thank you so much. ❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏
Your channel I think is the only one I CAN'T loose one video
Or videos are just perfect
Thank you for sharing this video! The landscape actually reminds me so much of Appalachia, between that and the lovely people it gives me a homey feeling despite being half the world away.😄
The ecology and geography here does remind me a lot of some places near my hometown, especially in the fall . that’s part of what drew me back here two years later even with so many other places I could choose to go , I just really love this part of Taizhou . A Chinese version of Appalachia 🤣
看政治视频我心中充满仇恨,看你的视频很和谐。❤你是天使。
I feel so peaceful watching this!~ Although I am Chinese, I didn't get much chance visiting rural areas and villages like this one. Thanks for sharing it with the world.
I always wait for your posts. I love the easy vibe of it. Also, love very much the music combo of country, sometimes jazz and instrumental depending in the scene. But most of all, the humanity content of it. Keep doing it.
I can’t believe that the the economic hub/village from the Song Dynasty has been preserved in the present day, and it is still can be used for living too.
Your videos are so interesting to watch cause most young foreigners are more fascinated by modern Chinese cities. You're interested in exploring the ancient villages of China. Love it.
Some day someone is gonna make a documentary about your incredible life in China.
Really enjoyed this! Thanks Kat!
你的视频就像一股清流,没有政治和比较,只记录真实生活,爱!
that aunty's english so good.
Gift? I am Happy to have found your channel today! I love your authentic, unsophisticated (that is a compliment) technique. I am an old (77 years) American living with my wife (Chinese) and her lovely mother (94 years) in Lijiang for the past 12 years (6-8 months per year). I spend 2-3 months per year just driving all over rural China (Western). I don't know how to contact someone on RUclips (Other than comments) but I have a nice gift for you. If you can return your company address I can send to you at that address. You will like it and can definitely use it for your photography work. As a new subscriber, I will be scouring our video for ideas on where to visit. You are a great ambassador of international friendship.
You are the best presenter, Kats; you have the tack for blending in. You have a reincarnated Chinese past life-definitely!! (no, I'm not a Lama to say that😄) You literally amaze me--every episode I've been able to watch is always an A+
What a lovely, peaceful video! Thank you for transporting us there :)
Ocean themed temples are quite common in Fujian and Taiwan due to the ocean going nature of the population.
Love this video. I love seeing kids enjoying simple toys rather than video games or expensive gadgets... That reminds me how I raised my little daughter decades ago.............haha. She is now a full grown woman..
Sceneries and interactions off the red stallion are amazing, thank you for showing the part of china most vloggers leaves out
Im so jealous. You are living the dream! When I move to Zhejiang this month ill be sure to visit all my nearby villages.
3:02. They device they are using to pound the flour is called a trip hammer, invented over 2,000 years ago in China. It would have been a common sight during the Song dynasty, though it would have been powered by a water wheel, converting rotary to linear motion.
国清寺位于浙江省台州市天台县城关镇,始建于隋开皇十八年(598年),初名天台寺,后取“寺若成,国即清”,改名为国清寺--the Guoqing temple is about 1425 years old
beautiful temple , the small town , the old tree, and the nice path.
