As a Chinese, I feel like this is also so valuable for me and Chinese history and culture. Helps imagine how people used to live before modernization. Great job!
Wife and I love your content and gives it great joy in knowing we will be relocating to China at end of the year! You make a great travel guide, keep up the great work
What a beautiful place and scenery, Katherine! You really are blessed person to been able to go to a small Villages like this one. Good for us to follow your Channel. Many thanks from Brazil.
i really love this channel because Katty goes to everywhere in China but not only the "big rich cities" ^^ in fact, rural life has been a trend for the young generation in China because they want to escape from the stress :P
@@gordkao The one Katherine visited is already a tourist destination. I gather it's the flow of revenue that helped to keep the abandoned houses standing. The point is there are just too many such villages in the region - or in China in general - and not enough drive to make every one of them a tourist destination. And these particular villages in southern Zhejiang aren't very accessible - pull out Google Maps with terrain on, you'll realize even with all the freshly built paved roads connecting the most remote corners to the grid, the mountains make sure it's still hours to get from point A to B.
Katherine, your greatest mission in life is trying to bridge the gap and divide between China and the US. Your work portends to peace. God bless you forever!
thanks for your support, more videos coming soon ❤️❤️😭 sorry to respond so late I only just figured out how to find my super thanks comments😂for some reason they seem to be listed differently than regular comments
It's very thoughtful that concrete houses down below 'clad' the walls with mud to match / harmonise with those historic houses up the hill . And the scenery just so calming.
3:12 It's a mini shrine worshipping the talisman of Wuxian Emperor, a popular deity native to southern Zhejiang and northern Fujian, accompanied by Wu Sangong, a 12th century farmer deified as the local God of Mushroom, also ancestor of Uncle Wu's clan; Liu Bowen, legendary advisor to Hongwu Emperor (think Merlin) , a local of Qingtian County not far away; plus some more commonly worshipped deities. Each part of China have their own local deities, which not unlike the many saints in Christianity, are remnants of much older belief systems. A bit further south you'll likely be in the land of the Monkey King - not as the nation's favorite supernatural hero, but in its original form as a mountain god that dates back to at least a millennia before Journey to the West.
@@8qk67acq5 Both. Most region-specific saints in Christianity originated as remnant of older belief systems, not unlike the region-specific Chinese deities. Actually they went through similar process of syncretization.
Thank you Katherine for being so honest and frank about your separation from Wei. Good that you have clarified this as it was in our mind what happened ! Trust that you will move on and be a very successful youtuber. I am from Malaysia and is an avid viewer of your channel.
Another great video Kate, this is the rural China I like to see. The scenery is beautiful and peaceful , an ideal place to retire. Well edited and I am hoping for more. Thanks for showing the rural village of China, which is disappearing fast.
I don't think anyone could ever imagine a sequence of a drone flying away from Chinese Village and American grassroot music playing in the background. Truly the best of both worlds. Great fusion! Who is singing?
Congrats on hitting 100k subscribers! I've just been in the region last October checking out ancient relics and buildings preserved in the mountains. Definitely fascinating and unique, this part of Zhejiang/Fujian (and where isn't in China, besides the concrete-printed parts of the big cities?). If you have time - not really I gather now that you must have finished the task on site - the 14th century Shisi Temple not far from Qingyuan is a gem. Also the ancient covered bridges - there are just too many and impossible to cover all, as the mountain roads are so time consuming!
I would love to make a return trip and do a bike tour from Qingyuan to fujian , it’s one of the most interesting and scenic places I’ve been to since my return from the US ⛰
U are simply marvelous. She be an ambassador in promoting better understanding n appreciation of culture n China to the west. Love to watch your videos n I NEVER MISSED ANY. Keep it up n Tk U so much.
I was interested in your description of the old buildings as "dirt" houses. Some mixture of earth/clay, animal dung and straw has been used in every part of the world in the past and provides great insulation. Rainwater has to be kept off the walls, though, or the whole structure falls apart. I lived in such a house in Devon, England, where the "dirt" is called cob and the roof was traditionally thatch. Every village has some, which date back up to 500 or 600 years, and very pretty they look.
This vlog really reminds me of a chinese drama called Minning town. And usually when people in that rural village if they don't relocate to the city but build a sturdy better house than the old one, local govt will subsidized the house.
They were trying to go that route actually but it’s just too in-the-middle-of-nowhere to attract enough people and it’s kind of a niche destination, it’s great if you love urbex 😂
@@kats_journey_east getting out into the countryside is what I love, when visiting other countries, I would love walking the hills there, is there thriving tourism in rural areas, I was lead to believe it's harder to find accommodation for foreign tourist
Hi Katherine, I'm a KIWI living in Qingyuan with my Chinese Wife and wouldn't have it any other way, love the people, countryside, and the food, I consider myself extremely lucky 🙏🙏🙏
God bless you, Katherine. You don't look as cheerful. I am sure you will find happiness soon. Thank you for your videos. Your channel is one of my favourites. Take care.
What the hell, Katherine!! You're an incredible person -- WOW...just about everything I'd dreamed of for myself (though not in China, LOL) when I was young...so good to see your generation being so open-minded and outgoing!
What a fascinating mushroom man! I will defiantly try eating (mountain) mouse when I go back to China this summer. Everything I ate when I lived there eight years ago was delicious! Thanks for the village tour.
Wow, the beatiful lady Yang Li Zi's mandarin has shocked me, because her Chinese speaking does not have any accent carved with foriegner normally. By the way, you speak excellent English as well, and I cannot guess where you are from without your original accent. Thanks for your video which are very one of a kind.
That abandoned village is, as NZer say, out in the wop wops. However, I saw a well built road leading to it, and there is electricity supply to door. Incredible. This piggy back ride opportunity for a video like this is just wonderful. There is no other ways we viewers can see this sort of things elsewhere. Thanks a lot mate.
Really interesting Katherine. In England we call dirt houses cob. Its heartening that the concrete houses have been clad in cob to better reflect the rural vernacular. The guy talking about the village seemed such a nice guy.

Beautiful drone footage! The mountains of China have such a sense of majesty to them. It's so cool seeing how people react to you in these rural communities. It must be quite rare for foreign-born travelers to pass through their village, but they treat you as one of their own all the same.
Thanks for another interesting video, Kat. Another reason I enjoy watching your videos is listening to your clearly spoken Mandarin when you are communicating with the locals. Often I can only understand what you have said whereas words used by locals are difficult to understand.
