I always had respect for Dorian Yates as a bodybuilding game changer. My respect for him as a person just went through the roof. One, for being fearless and not taking crap from anyone, but way more so for having the character and courage to address a misunderstanding. For anyone who knows anything about Lee Haney, you know that his character is about as high as it gets. Great story all around.

I watched Lee train for about five weeks he used very light weights at all nor did he train hard but he was super kind, nice, a real professional and now he has proved he was smart… not crippled like so many years later.
I saw Haney at the 2014 Olympia and I asked him how he had such an impressive physique in his last Olympia. He told me he trained with heavier weights and it gave him a denser look. He was super friendly and seemed like a great guy overall.
If Haney had better legs he'd still be regarded as the greatest ever. His upper body mass, sweep, proportins and definition......god he was good. 250+lbs and totally aesthetic. Dorian's '93 package though may be the best ever all round physique. Two of the true greats.
people need to stop saying these things about Golden era bodybuilders. They didn't train for legs to be outlandishly huge and out of proportion. The very idea was frowned upon. He and Arnold had legs on par or better than all of their peers. Had either come up with later gens they would have been able to improve whatever they needed to to dominate those eras as well

I sat just behind the judges at the 91 Olympia in Florida and Lee Haney blew me away in person. For years he'd never looked quite as sharp and dense in the magazines. Definitely his all time best shape. I believe that version of Haney would have also beaten Yates in 1992 but the Yates of 1993 was immense and ushered in a new era of bodybuilding.

He was massive, cut..just incredible. I have seen several other top IFBB pros inthe flesh but he was leagues and leagues above.
No, actually it was Bob Fuchs, owner of gym in east village NYC(11th & 3rd) across US post office, and the famous Webster Hall up the block. Dorian train there on his NYC visits when competing at yearly Night of Champions contest which was held at the Beacon Theatre(72nd& B'way). Name of gym was NPC gym(Natural Physique Centre). Steve Weinbeger and Bev Francis would go there too. Eventually when Bob sold the gym, Steve opened up his own in Syosset, LI, thus continuing the tradition of a hardcore professional bb'ing gym for the Pros and top amateurs in NYC, know today at the East Coast Mecca of bb'ing.

Good laughs with her. Harold Poole(rip) held his physique down - nice guy, always willing to share, and B52's vocalist Fred Schneider brought flavor to the gym - quiet guy, nice guy did his thing ... So much to remember can't remember it all .. One of my favorite gyms during those days. .. .. Wow time marches on .

My uncle was a bodybuilder back in the 80s and 90s ,He worked out and trained with Lee a good bit ,got a picture and autograph with him.i was kid but I remember him being a real nice guy,he was a big dude for sure 💪🏋
These guys hardly represent an alpha male. They couldn’t run further than a mile without dying. The list goes on. They are like show cars designed to look great but that could hardly defend themselves in an actual fight that lasted longer 30 seconds.

Dorian didn't have a beautiful physique. He was probably the hardest, grainiest and most conditioned bodybuilder ever at his peak though. His skin was paper thin too.

I remember that from 1991, Dorian was being a bit "hard" on stage so Haney threw up that spread eagle pose and knocked him the face. But they had been competing for space in the prejudging and posedown so you could see it coming. Dorian was right to let it go though, he was the rookie O competitor, take your licks and come back, which he did.

In fairness to the gym owner for New York, he put Dorian in the right competitive frame of mind and had him show no respect to the champion.
