Wow! I was just thinking the same thing the information in this video may be great for a body building career but not for overall health especially not for aging healthy.
If you are fat adapted what usually takes up a few month on Keto or Carnivore you will greatly build muscle. Most people just have no idea cause they never tried it. The amount of cholesterol you eat will greatly effect your hormone. Bodybuilders make a big mistake to avoid saturated fat. Asides from that, longterm you will have lower inflammation in your body what leads to less injuries and better overall health. You can look at Vince Girondas diet principles.

Low carbs works brilliantly for me, keeps muscle on and allows me to train sufficiently to cut fat and maintain strength. Keeping them in but lowering calories gives disastrous results for me. Lee Human bodies don't all work the same, and not everybody trains like Lee Haney. "Avoid Keto and low carbs" is a really bad tagline to extract from this, Escape Fitness.
I like Lee Haney, but he’s wrong about low carb and no carb diets. Steak is the most nutritious source of protein that we have. Saturated fat has been proven to be demonized wrongly. Saturated fat is necessary and cholesterol is necessary. Recent research has shown that there is no relationship between red meat and cancer and that cholesterol is definitely necessary for hormone maintenance and especially as you age. A Japanese study showed that the people who had the highest cholesterol after the age of 50 years old are the people that lived the longest. I was a low level bodybuilder for 2 1/2 years in my early 20s, obviously not nearly at the level of Lee Haney. But I prescribed to the same philosophy regarding carbohydrates. Many bodybuilders used carb depletion and carb loading in order to increase vascularity and cause the water to get forced into the muscles. It works. But the reason it works is because it is a short-term manipulation of the body’s metabolism where it shocks it by eliminating its primary energy source of carbohydrates. The human body is always looking for equilibrium. So you can do hacks that help you to draw water out and force water into the muscles. People do this with sodium loading as well. But over time your body will figure out a way around the hack. With carb depletion, over time your body would be starving for energy so eventually it begins producing ketones, in order for the ketones to use fat for an energy source. Once this occurs, your body becomes a fat burner. For those who say, “are you saying that you know more than Lee Haney?” I’m saying regarding low carb diets absolutely. I have not only studied them for the last six years, I have been on a carnivore diet for five of the six years that I have been low carb. The last year and a half I only eat red meat and water. I work out 3 to 4 times a week and I am 60 years old. A high carb bodybuilder diet helped contribute to a bunch of my metabolic issues. And that was without steroid use. I had 40 years worth of migraines and a host of other issues. I had some insulin resistance and heart and blood pressure issues. Carnivore lifestyle has rid me of migraines, and my heart and blood pressure issues. Not just that, but unlikely Haney, I am eating like a horse and getting stronger at 60 years old. I eat roughly 4000 cal a day and my red meat macros come out to about 300 g of protein daily and about 300 g of fat daily. (68% fat,32%protein,0% carbs) The problem for most people is that there is an adaptation period. And for people who are carb heavy eaters, that adaptation can take months. The facts regarding glycogen stores is that, after fully adapted, you replenish glycogen the same as a carbohydrate consumer. But you have to have been fat adapted for quite a while. The human body is an amazing God given biological machine. But years, eating high carbohydrate and working out hard takes its toll on your insulin system. Constant insulin spikes wears that system out. when you use fat as an energy source, you are resting the insulin system and relying on your gut and hydrochloric acid and the intestines in order to get absorption of your nutrients. It’s a much more effective process for the body, especially if your insulin system has been taxed over the years. In addition, most of the steroid guys have to be on TRT for the rest of their life as a carb burner, in order to maintain that insulin sensitivity for muscle growth, and in order to have the testosterone needed for their workouts. When you are consuming fat, the fat is creating cholesterol and is feeding your testosterone. It’s a natural steroid. Anyway, I’m sure I’ll get some hate on this. But I am living proof. This is an N equals one experiment that has extended my life and has given me a future life with no migraines and no blood pressure issues. Lee Haney wouldn’t know this because he never committed to it. That’s understandable. But it doesn’t mean he’s right. Also his recommendation to use nut and seed oils over saturated fat is bad advice. Unfortunately the mainstream media and the pharmaceutical industry is not publicizing the science and facts that are behind the demonization of saturated fat and cholesterol although The New York Times did an article in 2017 and Joe Rogan recently interviewed a doctor from England who debunked the saturated fat lie. Dr Aseem Malhotra.
If your overweight have autoimmune issues, diabetes , going low carb and no sugar will save your life I don't care what lee Haney says weight training is very important for your health also intermittent fasting works! Also take b complex ,resveritrol and metformin and your life and health will drastically change for the better
At the end of the day experimenting with what diet works for you is the most import thing . I was given too sugar in my childhood and now I’m super sensitive to carbohydrates . Everyone is different .

I remember doing keto. For my conditioning I would do run up and down stairs to increase strength in my legs and endurance for my lungs. I used to do enough line up and down 40 times. Once I started keto I felt pain and burning in my legs and I could only do no more than half. Had absolutely no energy in my muscles to draw from. Keto with no carbs is worthless!
That's because you weren't getting enough electrolytes to keep your body and muscles hydrated. Once you start cutting the carbs, you lose the water that is retained with the stored carbs in your muscles, so you lose electrolytes hence the cramping. Once you add those back in, things would go a lot smoother.
@@andrewvincent7299 thanks . Since I’m trying to cut some extra body fat I will keep that in mind then. I can understand lowering your carb intake. However cutting it out altogether seems pointless.

I am not a practitioner of keto personally I do however feel I tend to build muscle better and recover faster when I bump up the fat and reduce the carbs personally. I think we are all different, so blanket statements can never be applied to all.
Yup. Bump up the fat and protein and you'll be ok. It's about eating the right foods. Carbs aren't essential but they still have their place. Me personally I feel better without Carbs and it might just be the trt but I've been doing good on keto and building some muscle
Clinically we know this to be true. There are different types of metabolism. Blanket statements are not intelligent or useful. Each person has to find what works for them. Even then, one’s metabolism can alter.
@@ricksgiggle8852 obviously trt
Agree 100% genetics works different from person to person.
I'm a ectmotph, so zero carbs for me is a no no.
Low carb is silly diet not to mention in bodybuilding
Lee is a true champion, what he says make perfectly sense and My personal experience last 34 years ( I am 52) lifting weight confirm what he says. You have to feed the body to Burn fat, simple but hard
I'm 50 and lifting for 32 years I totally agree 👍🏼💯
What a Class Act.... such a stand up Guy....... I love hearing him talk about the intricacies of BodyBuilding.... and how important Nutrition is. 😃
Words of Wisdom for one of the best Bodybuilders of all time.
A friend of mine was in Venice Beach and saw Lee incline press 400lbs. Insane. 🙏🏻
Saw him guest pose at the 1988 Nationals in Atlanta ... OMFG ... it was 4 weeks or so after winning the Olympia if I guess correctly. He dwarfed every other bodybuilders on stage that day, and trust me, there was monsters there. Lee was just in a class by himself. Class act all the way.
I’m a carb monster and have single digit body fat. If you’re doing moderate to intense exercise (like we all should be doing as humans) carbs are not only helpful, their necessary to reaching high levels of performance and overall health.
Please people please don't go out and eat 400 g of carbs remember This guy is 10% body fat on gear is metabolism works different If you're natural you have to do something different for you his advice is excellent for him and people on his level
I was wondering if this can be applied to everyone. I'm 80kg 38 yo and I was 85kg 2 months ago. Lower my carbs to 160g P 170g and f85g 2100kcal . Actually is this good ratio?
I'm Black with almost not body fat, fast metabolism
@@ddeteck1134 no its not. Too many carbs cause insulin resistance over time which can lead to diabetes.
I eat 530g even on my rest days
@@KariSiltavuo sugar is poison. Good luckk
@@ddeteck1134 it's amazing ratio.
maybe if you want to be a bodybuilder but if you want to stay healthy low carb will be the best for 80% of the population, especially as you get older and more insulin resistant!
Wow! I was just thinking the same thing the information in this video may be great for a body building career but not for overall health especially not for aging healthy.
These mass monsters today don’t compare to guys like Lee Haney. IMO
Keto is perfect for losing fat, but horrible for gaining muscle unless you are a beginner looking for newbie gains.
Yeah couldn't help but notice how many keto pushers are skinny but look like they can't lift a thing. I had to up my intake to start getting results in my strength training.
Totally agree
Never cut carbs out Mr Haney is right. Muscle needs carbs.
What a brilliant human and bodybuilder 🙏🙏🏋🏼♂️🏋🏼♂️
Thanks, but I'm not a professional bodybuilder. 😶
Lee Haney! I Was but a kid when he was all over the covers of body building magazines. I had no internet at the time, its the first time in my 40s that I see him life :) So cool!
Lee Haney is just like a professor of nutrition ,when he said no lower than 50-100 grams of carbs he was spot on because that's the Glycogen amount stored in the liver.
Escape Fitness + Lee Haney if my favorite Body Builder!! Bring back the Haney Gloves. I had a set and miss them to this day!!! What a bummer no more Haney Gloves.

I agree with Lee. I never do lower than 100 carbs….ever!!
@Phill cause its the number that works on him. Lee Haney actually said 50.
@@J.o.e_K yep when I attempted I lost strength more than anything. Had stop and add a lot of carbs back in to regain that lost muscle.
Lee Haney,,is a very humble, down to earth,Mr.Olympia,,,a walking bodybuilding scientific book...
100% class act and one of the greatest, yet humble enough to credit the legends before him who paved the way.
That guy mentioned low carb and Lee immediately started roasting me.
Haney with the words of wisdom from experience. Like button smashed as if it was another rep.

Great interview!!!
Thank you!
I'm a carb monster too, always was around 5-10% bodyfat. 45 now and 12% at 185lbs.
Different genetics. I can’t have carbs at all no matter how active I am. I get fat, easily. Low carb/zero carb is the only answer for me as well as intermittent fasting.
@Automatic Steel Correct!
However for some of us carbs are like a drug and we can't stop eating them no matter what.
@@EEEBA1 exactly, carbs are addicting, I had a sweet potato one day and that triggered my addition. The following week I was eating crackers, chips, and I ate an entire load of break in about three days.
I went back to basically carnivore and the desire for carbs disappeared and I was on track to losing body fat again.
@Automatic Steel... until your body's hormones adjust your metabolism slower and slower and suddenly you're no longer in a calorie defecit. And there's no guarantee that the weight lost will be mostly body fat either. there's always a guy like you in the comments that just parrots this shit they hear thinking they're a genius...
@Automatic Steel Keep believing that 1970's crap they taught you.
I love lee!!!!
Lee Haney is a great man. I love this guy.
If you're eating quality protein, carbohydrates (e.g. high-fiber fruits & vegetables) and mono-unsaturated fats, you don't need keto.
He did it too. He combined the best of and survived it well, unlike most.
Frank Zane looks terrible now, my hero on the stage when I was a kid.
It's not really a fair comparison Zanes in he's 80s LOT deterioration happens mid 60s /70s to 80 . Zanes working out at an age most are dead.🤣
Old-School bodybuilders were ingenious physique architects. They had a profound knowledge of the principles of proper nutrition, smart supplementation, exercise science and muscle adaptability. If you combine Old-School bodybuilding wisdom with modern, evidence-based science, it's the best, safest, most effective way in achieving a strong, sexy, healthy and aesthetic physique. Vintage Physique by George Kelly is a nice read on the topic.
But today most are looking for quick results with TREN and other ridiculous shortcuts.
The best Body and abs ever in Bodybuilding hands down and a Wealth of knowledge 🔥🔥🔥
Remember watching Battle for Olympia on VHS, there's a scene where Lee calls Mike Christian "wishy washy" and Mike replies "I was great in 88 - it's gonna be mine in 89"😂
I love Lee Haney!!! My favorite Mr Olympia... I saw him several times in Atlanta. He looks real healthy and looks tall in person.
I actually knew nothing of Lee until this past year. I actually saw him posing once online without knowing who he was several years ago & I was blown away with how supple, tight & smooth his muscular contractions were. I had what I call sticky muscles for years due corrupt methods so when I’d contract they’d kinda cramp to stick for millisecond. It was pretty weird.? I just remember thinking I’d like to be like that guy because what he had was awesome 👍🏻✨
Lee Haney is an intelligent and honest man.
Happy to notice that I followed the true heroes. Lee still a inspiration for me. Great mind!! #Brazil
He will Always Be Best of the Best!!!!
Classy and Great Man!!😎👍
Let me go ahead and get nutrition advice from a guy that spent years on gear in a profession (bodybuilding) where men are literally dropping dead left and right in their 40s and 50s. I’m all set with that.
Lee didn’t use gear
You still gotta work out and eat right to achieve a certain physique gear or no gear. Obese men are still dying in their 40s and 50s.. no gear needed.
@@loganross1861 Right.
@@kobe_won_shinobi No shit. I'm not beyond getting advice about health, nutrition, and training. Just not going to get it from dudes who are 100% not in it to live healthy whatsoever.
@JB-hq9yj by the looks of it, Lee Haney seems healthy to me. Healthier than majority of people at 64.
The real question is, Wtf you click on the video in the first place? Just so you could give your stance against bodybuilders giving nutrition advice...
This is the first time I've ever heard him speak and I am amazed at his depth of understanding and the clarity with which he explains his experience.
Lee Haney the real goat 8 straight not losing at the end
Thankk you Sir Haney ❤🎉
Low carbs works brilliantly for me, keeps muscle on and allows me to train sufficiently to cut fat and maintain strength. Keeping them in but lowering calories gives disastrous results for me. Lee Human bodies don't all work the same, and not everybody trains like Lee Haney. "Avoid Keto and low carbs" is a really bad tagline to extract from this, Escape Fitness.
He said he did 50g a day at his lowest. That's pretty low
very pleasant personality, thank you for this interview.
(68% fat,32%protein,0% carbs)
The problem for most people is that there is an adaptation period.
Loved the video! Great advice from a legend. 💪👑🙏
Glad you enjoyed it!
So kind of Lance Armstrong to interview Lee
Lee is the real deal!!! He is hands down the best Mr Olympia
LH, so well spoken and a gentleman.
I went to one pro show, the 84 Olympia in NYC. When they walked out, Lee was the clear winner
I had the honor of meeting Lee Haney back in 1987. Even though I was born in 1996.
Very intelligent. No wonder he won so many Olympias.
If your overweight have autoimmune issues, diabetes , going low carb and no sugar will save your life I don't care what lee Haney says weight training is very important for your health also intermittent fasting works! Also take b complex ,resveritrol and metformin and your life and health will drastically change for the better
To be fair he's talking about competition bodybuilders not normal people.
At the end of the day experimenting with what diet works for you is the most import thing . I was given too sugar in my childhood and now I’m super sensitive to carbohydrates . Everyone is different .
THE G.O.A.T..

He’s incredible human being. Lee dropped wisdom
I tried that low carb keto diet in January 2023 to lower my blood glucose down and I almost died, low energy, low everything, and I'm back up to strength again
That's because you probably weren't doing it right with all due respect.
This is a good video. Lee just speaks about practical eating in bodybuilding. The man is smart.

It takes 1 to 3 months for fat adaptation. Concluding from the first week is rather pointless
@@Cenot4ph yes.
Had to put all that water back in anyway loading up on creatine to strength train.

Difficult to take nutrition advice from someone who was on steroids. The body will react differently.
It’s been documented that Lee never took steroids.
Crazy how bodybuilders from the 80's on, say they loved Joe Weider. But back in the 60's and 70's, he did Robby Robinson and Sergio Oliva dirty.
