Thats crazy that merc didnt even manage ti use the hybrid to fill in the turbo lag power gap. Thats like one of the main benefits of hybridising a turbo engine 😅
@xelaander8429 because the turbo lag on that 2l 4cyl is insane. Its also why it looses every drag race against it's competitors (a45s vs rs3 and m240i for example).
It's an inline 4 making big power. The turbo must be huge, so long spool times. I think this car suffers from trying to use tech combinations that aren't there yet, if it had a lighter battery and more powerful electrical motors to fill the gap it would be better. Or if it just made less power from the 4 cylinder it could have a smaller turbo and still be a great drive.
@@chrxx4327the point of the hybrid should be that it is full power below the boost threshold then tapers off when the engine has power. this doesn't do that
The majority of new Mercedes' on the road today are leases. It's a car you wouldn't want to own past warranty. Think of it like a luxury rental apartment.

Quite possibly the biggest mistake AMG will ever make. Let’s thank James and Thomas for bringing us a difficult and 100% honest review. Throttle house did for us what AMG could not. They cared for their audience.
@@alcrawford4160 Doesn't mean they had to make it this bad though. Way too heavy, horrible chassis dynamics even for the weight, and they completely squandered the opportunity to provide a hotter version of the 6 cylinder to compete with the M3 (they already have it in the GT53). Then they dropped the 6 entirely taking a massive L to BMW in the engine department now. Anything under the GT63 and AMG GT is an embarrassment at this point.
This just makes cars like the BMW M3, the Alfa Giulia QV, and the Cadillac CT4 Blackwing seem like that much more of an automatic “buy now” before everything goes to EV.

I've been suspicious that certain sites and journalists are paid off or "incentivized" by these companies to give favorable reviews. That or traditional purist enthusiasts have been phased out for mindless drones. When it was announced to be a hybrid 4-Cylinder I showed it to my dad, himself a Mercedes Fan and AMG customer. His face was priceless, he genuinely recoiled and raised his eyebrows. As for the car itself, it doesn't look special as all AMGs look the same now, it's super heavy and it has an A-Class engine. A CT4-V Blackwing, Giulia Quadrifoglio or M3 seem like the more exciting and enticing options.

Indeed. Yes. I am actually so happy I do not have to wonder about, or ponder, this car's obvious flaws, and general hopelessness. Thank god I am so financially challenged.
Former amg chief Tobias Moers hated that mercedes forced him to make this car. There were reports he stormed out of a meeting with the mercedes execs when they told him the direction of the new c63. Now we see why. What were they thinking?
Mercedes, and other German luxury manufactures, are no longer about engineers. They’re about bean counters. Remember when they used to be fairly reliable cars? Now they’ll definitely never be. Forever. Yeah a Tesla has worse build quality, but at least it’ll be more reliable than this C63 with its overpowered tiny engine in that’s a financial disaster waiting to happen. At that point I’d go for a Tesla. Seriously…
@@faheemabbas3965 at what point they were about engineers for more than 1 random generation of cars? And where they were reliable, it's literally 90+% drop in price for every 15+ year german top-end car because it's a total disaster from reliability point of view
What were they thinking? Well for the majority that will buy it and not give a shit about how it performs, it will be for “DUDE DO YOU FEEL THAT 0-120 km/h?!?! THIS CAR IS QUICK”, and then “this Mercedes is a Hybrid now. Your car is a sports car but is it a hybrid in the same category? Nah I don’t think so.”, And “Mercedes duh, fast and has luxury.” That’s what they’re thinking.
I bought a 2019 AMG C63S this year. I added some HR Lowring springs, sports exhaust and chipped it to run at 640BHP. Glorious, monster V8 that will now hold its value.
@@rightwingsafetysquad9872 Mercedes did so until fairly recently. As for BMW, they always preferred Inline-six engines, and Mercedes switched to them now as well, because they are more related to their prevalent Inline-four engine.
I hate EVs. Not because they’re horribly boring (id like a model 3 performance), but because they’re the reason why we now have a built-to-explode overpowered 4 cylinder AMG that once had a V8. Remember when benzes used to be fairly reliable? Now they’ll never be. Forever. Marketing car.
It's sad to see the car that got me into cars in the first place massacred like this. I wasn't really into cars until I rode in a W204 C63 that had an x-pipe exhaust, the roar of the NA V8 in that got me hooked, I loved the W205 for its brutal power delivery and amazing exhaust note. Then, this happened.

I’ve watched a few reviews on this car. This one feels like it’s literally the only one that’s not paid for by Mercedes, you guys seem unfiltered which is great Subscribed
You guys are moving up in the world. From local reviews to California trips, to your 3-part special (awesome by the way) to testing stuff in Europe. WELL DONE!
This car is a case of “the engineers were so preoccupied with if they could they didn’t stop to think if they should”. This should have been a 6 cylinder
I wouldn't say objective. Not at all. But it is a thorough and fair review. I think the car will grow on people, but at the same token I don't think AMG is moving in the right direction with the utilization of the 4 cylinder in a c63. c43 sure, if they could have pumped 500 horsepower out of it. But it still loses to the older b58 in it's current iteration. And barely edges out a W against an S5.
I remember before this came out and just getting rumors, I kept saying there’s no way that Mercedes AMG could be stupid enough to put a four-cylinder in the C63. But lo and behold here we are…
I was hesitantly optimistic about this new C63, but so sad to see all the expected flaws came to pass. I've had 3 W204 C63s and currently have a W205 C63S, and seeing this just cements the fact Mercedes will never make a car like these again. They've really taken out all the fun, raucousness, and excitement from the car. To anyone who hasn't tried driving or seeing a W204 C63 in person, the 6.2L is hilarious and will make you question how Mercedes ever put such a crazy car out there.
I have a dream that one day Mercedes will wake up and realize their mistakes and then put a M159 in their c63/e63. Then have a supercharged variant. Hey, I can dream right? I don't see why they couldn't go that route. You would think after all these years they could figure out how to make it "pollute" less and be more efficient. I'm holding onto my w211 63 with both hands.
@@qupeter1224 AMG themselves said the only V8 will be present today and for later releases are G wagon, S-class, E-class and GT-class and all of them have to be the highest end of the trim except G-wagon, which comes in any trim (EQG doesnt count for obvious reason) The funniest thing is, reports filtering in from local dealers according to German media, allegedly records "close to zero" sales for the C63SE Performance💀💀💀
I think it would've been better if they had used the old 3 liter V6 from the C43 and then slap the hybrid system, that way it sounds a lot better, has some soul, but also manage the weight better, plus the naming would be somewhat better, 6 for V6, 3 for 3 liter instead of a 2 liter 4 cylinder
Wouldn't really work. That 6 cylinder is factory assembled, not hand assembled, which is an even bigger nono for the c63 name. Any top AMG needs to be hand assembled, even the a45. Weight management wouldn't have gotten better, they need to rehaul the entire suspension system for that to make sense. Kind of how they have hugeeee brakes on for the weight.

Horsepower is usually the marketing benchmark to differentiate new from old, but this had a leap compared to previous gens due to the added weight, not sure where they'll go from here, prob reducing weight figures but it might effect long term growth due to the rapid increase
If Merc has any sense, they'll take their whole return to I6s and spin it that way instead. They make some of the best blocks, and the I6 is the optimal engine design for a variety of reasons, all of which also translate on toward making it something of the best to mate to a hybrid drivetrain (put the engine to one side, and direct crank it to the gearbox mated to the electrical engine on the other, and then shove the whole package waaay back in the bay for that sweet weight distribution).
After this generation they’re most likely going to cancel the C63 all together and throw everything into an EQC63. This car seems more like a technology demonstrator than anything. A bad attempt at recreating a new NSX or ford gt.
Or possibly the IS 500. Yes, the Lexus will not corner as a German car would; but, the sound and the feel of the naturally aspirated 5L engine may be satisfying enough to an enthusiast. I am very disappointed with Mercedes and will be switching to another brand.

I hate that they couldn't make it at least a 6 cylinder, but thought that maybe one benefit of the 4 banger would be the lower weight. But Mercedes for some reason decided to make this as heavy as a full size SUV. What were they thinking?
I think this car's shortcomings highlight the incredible job that Volvo did with the Polestar 1. Similar concept (4 cylinder + big electric motor), though with a bit more emphasis on the electric motor for the Swede, also very weighty, and with an engine not necessarily known for being charismatic. To be fair, the Polestar is 50% more expensive, gets away with being cramped since it's a GT not a saloon, and most importantly, does not have to follow two generations of cars whose identity was 95% based on incredible V8 engines. But it's a testament to their wonderful job that most reviewers didn't know what to expect of the Polestar, were unconvinced that it was going to be any good (between the weird powertrain, elephant weight and Volvo origins, not known for being drivers cars), and yet, all walked away having fallen in love with the car. So Polestar proved it's possible, and AMG proved it's difficult. Only one of those two brands can walk away from this with a sense of accomplishment.
The turbo lag for Mercedes 4 cylinder is unreal, I hated it so much in my CLA45. Now it's in C63 ... And the motor doesn't even fix it lol. C63 used to be the entry to the world of AMG, and Mercedes ruined it. But the car would still sell as always, the car's target audience is shifting from car enthusiast to rich people.
The thing I don't understand is if car guys can accept electric motors in a bunch of city cars, suvs etc. Why can't they accept a V8 in a car that should be a V8?! Like the percentage of those is way smaller compared to other "normal" cars so why would they have to be "cleaned" ...
This is the result of what AI would think a car should be like if you gave it instructions to build a hybrid, 2.0T, 680HP, luxury sedan, that used to have a monster under the hood that roared so loudly it would wake the city up in shock, and every car guy would know an AMG just drove by, lol. @samiwasti8400 the c63 and c43 is literally night and day difference… why are you even comparing a C43 to an M3 on top of that the c63 has much more into it than it just being a 4 cylinder. Mercedes isn’t Ferrari. They sell volume and have to worry about meeting fleet fuel economy regulations at least a little. Think about it, if you could design a car without having to worry about fuel economy, the only electricity you might use in the powertrain besides the ignition coil is perhaps an electric turbocharger done right. More than likely, with all modern technology at your disposal, youd still go with a NA V8 or V10, or better yet, a boxer 6 in a lightweight and compact package (thank you Porsche). Mercedes is trying to embrace the horror with all this fancy electrification and it just loads up weight and sucks the joy out of the driving experience. Great video, guys. Why? The A45 with its incredible and boosted to the stratosphere 4-cylinder has been on the market for literally 10 years now and these engines have proven to be absolutely bomb proof - quite a few people already with 200kkm+ on them and they just work. Other things on these cars have issues but not the engines. And this motor is just an evolution of the M133, so why exactly would it be a problem?

Reminds me of driving a Volvo T8 car a few years ago.. Supercharged, Turbocharged, 4cyl plug-in hybrid. It was a mess to drive and very difficult to get a feel for what would happen when you hit either pedal. And the powertrain was bound to turn into a spectacularly expensive string of failures over time due to how many things they tried to shove into one car.
Hard disagree, having lived with a T8 for over 3 years now it's a very performant, predictable engine - that cost practically nothing to drive in daily use, but offers the oomph when needed. It's an incredible piece of engineering from Volvo.
@@MauriOTB I don't plan to ever own it without some kind of extended warranty so I'm really not bothered. Plan to keep this car for about 8-10 years total. And I really don't believe this drivetrain is as catastrophic as people say, the T8s have been on the market for 7 years now and the stories of truly catastrophic failures are far and between, not any worse than most other cars I've owned(better in fact).
Thanks a lot guys! Every "fear" i had that this car would be like, you guys mentioned. I drive a Merceds for almost 25 years now. And for 9 years it's a E63 (with the 6.2L V8, one of the last ones in the e-class before the change to the 5.5 BiTurbo). And my car is over 200kg lighter than this undeserving of it's name "C63". The first owner of my car ticked every box there was apart from the backup camera. (even a nightvision camera is in the car) and with it's over 6L V8 it's still a whole Motorcycle lighter than the top C-class!. Another point of reference: even the G wagons with the short wheelbase they stopped making in the 2000's are lighter than this c-class! And as for the fuel efficiency: on a long journey (in central europe, where i live) i have managed to achieve 9.9L/100km once, and under 11 L/100km a few times. So to me this hybrid thingy isn't as efficient as it seems. (my overall fuel consumption number over the 9 years of ownership is 13,1 L/100km. ) So this C-class is heavier than my old V8, worse in it's HMI, more distracting with it's HMI, only a tiny bit better in fuel efficiency (than my V8) seems to not do comfort comfortably, and sounds like everybodys 4 cyl car. We have reached a sad point in Mercedes and AMG history in my view. (and in some points with current MB cars i get the feeling that they forgott their maing comptence: how to build cars.) -> I try to keep my good old E63 for as long as i can! And if i have to look for something else, and i have the feeling a replacement won't wear the 3 pointed star anymore. @Mercerdes: At the moment you guys are practicing "how to best loose decades long customers".

Thats crazy that merc didnt even manage ti use the hybrid to fill in the turbo lag power gap. Thats like one of the main benefits of hybridising a turbo engine 😅
Bruv! Like I've never see a hybrid engine still suffer turbo lag, what's then the point of said electric engine outside of a faster 0-60 and eco mode
@xelaander8429 because the turbo lag on that 2l 4cyl is insane. Its also why it looses every drag race against it's competitors (a45s vs rs3 and m240i for example).
They literally have an electric turbo And haven’t put it in for this
It's an inline 4 making big power.

@@alcrawford4160 Doesn't mean they had to make it this bad though.
So either M3 or Giulia QV are the main choices for driving enthusiasts in this class.

The thing I don't understand is if car guys can accept electric motors in a bunch of city cars, suvs etc. Why can't they accept a V8 in a car that should be a V8?! Like the percentage of those is way smaller compared to other "normal" cars so why would they have to be "cleaned" ...
Former W204 C63 AMG owner and I enjoyed your review immensely. I suspect I would agree with your views on this new version.
And hey, Mercedes has done a great job of improving the value of your car. 😄
This is the result of what AI would think a car should be like if you gave it instructions to build a hybrid, 2.0T, 680HP, luxury sedan, that used to have a monster under the hood that roared so loudly it would wake the city up in shock, and every car guy would know an AMG just drove by, lol. So here AI, build me that car.
The car:
I hope they sell like 10 cars before production is pulled.
It is aesthetically pleasing though.
The truth of the matter is that you always know the right thing to do. The hard part is doing it.
Thanks guys, you nailed it! BHP isn't everything. Visceral appeal is a lot and it's been missing from the interior of MB cars for a long time now, and modern BS has made it's way under the hood and out the back, and on an AMG! Big miss from MB. We need more journalists/reviewers tearing into this madness, so manufacturers and consumers start listening.
Looking forward to the new C43 review as well! Considering you guys both picked the W205 C43 when doing the last German sport sedan comparison, the new one will be interesting!
If I was a Mercedes engineer I would be in tears after watching this. We would have to recall all of em n start over. Dam MB u messed up.
I think the engineers all knew it was going to be crap.
2026 is bringing back the v8. Thank GOD
No, they aren't.
As a past owner of w204 c63 for more then 7 years.. seeing this new model brings a tear or two to my eyes.. of sadness.
It will be interesting to see your review on the new C43. Same 4 cylinder but without a lot of the complexity and weight.
I didn’t even consider C63. My options were 2023 C43 AMG or 2023 BMW M3 Comp. C43 was the value proposition at $25k cheaper. Ended up getting the M3, why consider the C63 when it’s a 4cyl like the C43 and costs as much as the M3.
@samiwasti8400 the c63 and c43 is literally night and day difference… why are you even comparing a C43 to an M3 on top of that the c63 has much more into it than it just being a 4 cylinder. Just because they have the same 4 cylinder doesnt mean anything. The c63 has much more to offer ontop of the C63 and the c43 should never be compared to the M3. did you even watch the video?
@@ChingchongWong-u5t because I don’t want the C63. Not paying $100k for a 4 cylinder that I have to charge. That’s so annoying I don’t wanna have to put gas and charge a car it’s the worst of both worlds. The C43 looked nice and was peppy for only $72k fully loaded with some of Mercedes best luxury
@samiwasti8400 Well, based on what you said, the M3 should have been easily your only choice.
Imagine the fault codes on this in a few years.
Why would there be any? Was tested for a million miles in harsher conditions than you, or anyone, will ever use it in. It weighs so much for a reason (hint: it's not the battery size).
These borderline slander-y comments just because you'll never even come close to being able to afford one are just pathetic.
@ToxicDonut81 You should delete that last sentence bud. People on MBWorld are all saying they are hanging onto their 204 and 205s, not interested in the new one in the slightest. You can bet yout butt that most of those people can most certainly easily afford the 206.
@@Monaco377 Why would you assume that? Most 204s and 205s on that forum have 30k+ miles on them, the price of one of those is worlds apart from the new 206. Given the low tax rate and cost of living in the US, anyone with a half-decent job can afford a well-used, maybe salvaged 205/206 there.
That being said, these guys should totally hang on to their V8s, I would do the same. But not because the new car will be unreliable, but because it's such a disappointment.
@@TheUrbanEpicure Most people on that forum buy their cars new, because most of them post photos of themselves picking their car up new. The same people have been vocal about not wanting to step into the new one, for the reason you stated. It's a disappointment.
@@Monaco377 Cool, why did you reply to my message then? My point was that the new one does not necessarily have to be unrealiable a few years down the road. Never said it wasn't a disappointment.
Please do more and don’t confine your sampling to high end stuff. I’m in the market for a three row crossover to replace my wife’s 14 year old MDX and after reading these comments, I’m wondering if I should take the GLS off my list and just wait for the Lexus TX550+ (maybe Toyota does plug in hybrids best?).
Weight, weight and more weight followed by more and more and more complexity. This seems to be the modern way with cars. The more I see this stuff the more grateful I am for my little GR Yaris and Morizo Corolla.
And this why I just purchased a Lexus IS500…..
Smart man 🤝🏿
Nice, should hold value very well
Mercedes is just a planned obsolescence brand now.
start building power from that v8, as a Toyota it won't "break"
@@HeretolearnX Why is he smart when he got a car that does 0 to 60 in 4.4 seconds. This car blows it away with 2.9 seconds. Yes he will lose races and go home and say but I won with the sound. SMH LOL
Man, Mercedes has been dropping the ball lately.
It's the emissions laws everywhere forcing everybody to lower the cylinder count.
And it’ll get angry if you depress the throttle on a C63!
@@makatron Seems the engine is just one of the problems with this one.
At least they have an eco ball
@@WEKS87 engine was fine when I drove the CLA45s AMG, I just the find the whole "boost" isn't that exciting. The C300e at least have 100km EV range.
Your content has been ridiculously good recently.
As a BMW fanboy. Keep it up Mercedes! 😂🎉🎉🎉
they will be doing the same tho
Yeah, it makes me laugh too.
Yeah, it makes me laugh too.
@@twmatica The next gen M3 will be fully electric. They will just skip the Hybrid nonsense on that. The next M5 will have a hybrid powertrain but at least it will keep a V8 and it's a bigger car all around so it can get away with additional weight more easily than the C-Class/M3.
As a Porsche fanboy, lol at both brands.
My 2018 c63s (last one with no OPF) is rocketing in price every day after the new c63s gen came out.
One minute of silence for the V8 death, we will miss them sooner than later
Thank you for your sacrifice guys, we appreciate it.
I drop a like for the “quiet reflection” and the sand quote! Marvelous!!! You guys are killing it!
Throttle House's humor knows no bounds 😂 always amazing 🙌
Wow. You guys are really living the rough life over there. Looks like an awful trip driving luxury cars through one of the most beautiful places in the world.
Sarcasm aside, so happy that you've made it this far. I remember when you had ~150k subscribers. So cool to see how far you have come.
Luxury sedan should be comfortable and they point out this one is not, whats wrong with pointing out the fact? Or do you have an opinion about a fact? If you want a fast car and you dont care about comfort, go for a sports car, not a heavy sedan.. Whole point they are trying to make is that Mercedes has ruined a legend they created 15 years ago.
So you prefer them lying about how good it is while promoting local tourism spot?
What made me laugh was they spent most of it on the highway and not on some of the best driving roads in the world.
@@jerehada That is where the C63 lives majority of the time, autobahn...
Not being shy with your opinion when auto makers put out absolute crap like this is why you guys are still the best in the business.
You guys are amazing. Living the true car guys dream. I am completely jealous. Never stop being yourselves, that’s the real reason we watch.
That much power and compression into a 4 banger is quite scary especially after the warranty is expired...
Is this going to be one of those cars where they intentionally give you a worse (heavier) car initially, just to sell you a lighter (and waaaay more expensive) special version later? James May's rant on the Ferrari 360 comes to mind ... also, James May's cheese rant comes to mind as well, lol !
I think you mean 430 rant, when he compared it to the Taste the difference cheese. Ferrari made the 430, then came out with the Scud that was way more expensive. But yea I get what you mean
No, they already offer the lighter better car, the c43, both suck hard tho.
Can I just say I just discovered ur channel and you guys are the next best thing after top gear and grand tour after the 3 musketeers left. Well done lads 🤝🏾🤝🏾🤝🏾
To quote Gordon Murray “A great car starts with a great engine “.
Ukraine flags in bios are for idiots
Hard disagree, having lived with a T8 for over 3 years now it's a very performant, predictable engine - that cost practically nothing to drive in daily use, but offers the oomph when needed. It's an incredible piece of engineering from Volvo.
@@gambiting As a former Volvo Tech, enjoy your catastrophic hybrid system failure since it's not a question of if but rather when it happens.
Disagree, i have a Volvo XC60 T8 and i love it! No issues at all , feels safe and premium.
The auto-straightening of the tires after James got out of the car at 4:16 was dope!
Woah, just noticed that! Why did they spend time and money doing that 😂
@@abh2188because they had a lot of time left over after only doing half the motor
The I don’t like sand bit was absolutely gold 😂😂 that caught me off guard well done, if you know you know
Thanks a lot guys!
(my overall fuel consumption number over the 9 years of ownership is 13,1 L/100km. )
So this C-class is heavier than my old V8, worse in it's HMI, more distracting with it's HMI, only a tiny bit better in fuel efficiency (than my V8) seems to not do comfort comfortably, and sounds like everybodys 4 cyl car.
We have reached a sad point in Mercedes and AMG history in my view. (and in some points with current MB cars i get the feeling that they forgott their maing comptence: how to build cars.)
-> I try to keep my good old E63 for as long as i can! And if i have to look for something else, and i have the feeling a replacement won't wear the 3 pointed star anymore.
@Mercerdes: At the moment you guys are practicing "how to best loose decades long customers".
