making the sunroof capacitive touch, then having the surrounding area be gloss black knowing you'll try to find the slider by feel which leaves fingerprints everywhere. Truly terrible design
Emissions regulations too. Europe is being staunchly demanding and that's the home turf of Mercedes. So of course they are gonna make their cars in consideration to that.
I totally agree with Doug (and many of the comments here). I just wonder why in the Doug score the C63 is only one point behind the current BMW M3. Based on Doug's own analysis in the video, the gap should be much larger.
I could be wrong but I believe that they switched to a hybrid 4 cylinder because the Turbo V8 just by itself would not pass the new Euro emissions regulations coming down the pike. Yes, the other AMG 63 cars have a V8, but they are also hybrids for the same reason: Euro emissions. For the people saying “Why couldn’t they put in the V8 hybrid from the new S63,” it probably wouldn’t fit. So we got this instead.
This car is just an example of taking hybrids and small displacement engines too far. It might drive amazingly, but just doesn’t embody the spirit of AMG for most. Also Hagerty has done drag races between the C63 AMG, M3, and Model 3 performance and the BMW usually won, with the C63 finishing last. So even with all that power, weight, turbo lag, and complex engine likely hinder it.
Sadly that's the problem with most car companies today. It's all about the performance numbers and how fast a car can go. It's no longer about the driving experience and actually feeling the intensity from the roar of an engine as you drive faster.
@ I mean if you want to downsize go for it, but sometimes it can go a little too far. They downsized 10 years ago swapping that 6.2L for a 4.0L V8 but that V8 was done so amazingly that it felt bigger than the prior engine, still sounded amazing and had a visceral feeling to it, and just you didn’t miss anything. In this case, they went from a V8 to not a V6, but a V4. I could’ve forgiven them for going down to a V6 since they’d probably do a turbo V6 really well, but a 4-cylinder with all these extra components and weight, just feels weird even if it handles well.
German here, basically this C63 is more like an Experiment, why they thought to put it onto the Market? No Idea. It's impressive by itself, if you have driven one of these new C63s you will definitely know what i mean, but i doubt it will sell well because the Core AMG Crowd wants a V8 Prost & Cheers from Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps
In light of emissions regulations and all that jazz, I would have understood if they downsized to a beefy V6 or something. Would it have been a "true" C63? No, not at all. ...but 4 cylinders and hybridisation in a supposedly sporty, enthusiast car? Disgrace. Viele Grüße.
Fellow German from Berlin here, This might just be a feeling but I think the majority of customers for this car will probably be suburban Americans and people who street race them in Kreuzberg and Essen, not true enthusiasts.
I still hate these luxury brands that have decided to just mount rectangular screens for the gauges and center screen... I prefer the screens on my dads $20K Chevy Traxx, that has what looks like a wrap-around cluster that looks perfectly integrated in with the dash board. Instead of looking like someone glued a couple of iPads to the dash.
I gotta agree with the other commenters (and Doug). One of the most appealing things about the previous G63 was the sheer bravado of stuffing a big V8 in one M-B's smaller (at least in the North American market) cars. Going from that to a four-banger was destined to be a bridge too far for most.
Having a w205 c63s and having test the new w206 c63s I can confirm they (Mercedes not AMG) have ruined the c63s badge and BMW and Audi are really happy. Even they are trying to return the V8
Last year they sold aprox. 0 units in Europe that is just a fact. They are not selling and now they are already pulling it off from the showrooms. I have heard rumors about V8 coming back though.
The Chevy LT7 just dropped no hybrid 1064hp.. don't piss on me and tell me it's raining that the market needs a 4cylinder Civic63 for $100k. MB.AMG whiffed hard on this Gen,
I see that Doug is trying to mitigate the horrible echo in his doomsday bunker with wall panels. Keep going Mr. DeMuro, it's a little better, but you still have a long way to go 😀. Also, those projection headlights have been on the US and European models for a few years, but the US versions were deactivated due to US regulations. Good to see that we're finally catching up to the rest of the world. Lastly, the air intake flap and hood vent both are functional and necessary. The M139 engine runs really hot and Mercedes uses air, water, and oil to try and cool it down. It's the same setup on my GLA45.
If this is the compromise that we have to make to get high performance cars now, I don't mind it. I think it's a good take on a modern C63 that's quite handsome and it plays nicely into Mercedes' E performance and F1 venture as a brand. Not ideal but not bad.
I like Doug’s review of this car because everyone’s been harping in the whole 4cyl hybrid deal that they don’t acknowledge this seemingly masterpiece of a suspension… which at the end of the day is what makes a good sports car for a lot of people.
I'm 26 and think this car is a step backwards. I don't want a huge touchscreen in the middle of the car fiddling around for dumb things like AC or ambient lighting - like what!!?? I also want a V8. There is no one in their right mind that would settle for a FOUR cylinder engine and be happy driving that around. At this point, they shoulda just made the dam thing electric lol (and don't get me started on their electric cars). I also think I speak for a LOT of people when I say I want something that is technologically advanced and modern looking, but also has the PHYSICAL controls to keep the interior usable, more reliable, and make driving easier. #bringbacktheV8
Replacing a V8 by a four cylinder hybrid with more power and better fuel economy is not necessarily a bad idea, especially if it can be seen as an intermediate step before a fully electric version. However, a weight gain of 400 kg is crazy for a car with such a small battery. That's where the engineering must have gone totally wrong.
The weight gain really can't be because of the hybrid system if the electric range is only 6 miles. If the electric range was 60 miles I would understand the weight gain. Very strange...
What could have worked to some extent: 3.0L straight-6 with the same HP and hybrid system as this one, called "C-300AMG E+" Callback to the many loved 6 cylinders of Mercedes.
Not to mention MB reliability from the past 5 years has been on the toilet. Terrible materials, build quality, electrical issues, jerky transmissions, etc.
I feel like mercedes let us down with the 63 series but that the 43 series has never been better, a 4 cylinder hybrid makes sense for a 43 but not a 63.

If you look closely, you can see dust collects on them as well. I like the design overall, but if you want to keep the interior looking good you're going to have to be disciplined with keeping it clean.
making the sunroof capacitive touch, then having the surrounding area be gloss black knowing you'll try to find the slider by feel which leaves fingerprints everywhere. Truly terrible design
the dust is disgusting on screen mobiles, 2007 bmw x3 here, GORGEOUS SCREEN FREE EXISTANCE FOR ME.
Tech is killing the car industry, and this mess is a prime example of that.
Emissions regulations too. Europe is being staunchly demanding and that's the home turf of Mercedes. So of course they are gonna make their cars in consideration to that.
You just summed up the luxury market
90% of 55+ year old Greek and Arabic uncles who buy these cars don't use 99% of the tech. They just put their foot on the gas and go
Agreed emission regulations even more so they’re choking out the car manufacturers making them downsize and turbo
Emissions regulations destroyed the new m5 aswell…
I totally agree with Doug (and many of the comments here). I just wonder why in the Doug score the C63 is only one point behind the current BMW M3. Based on Doug's own analysis in the video, the gap should be much larger.
the doug score is one of the most arbitrarily applied things on this channel lol don’t worry about it
Last time I was this early, Doug had a Ferarri he used to try and pick up women for a skit

I was thinking the exact same thing 😂
🤣🤣🤣
It still surprises to me this day that Doug has never reviewed the previous W205 C63s here, even the Wagon
I don't think he has reviewed the W204 either.
@damilolaakanni he has reviewed the Black series version.
Wagon was never sold in US
He's also never reviewed a w203 c class, he kinda just never paid attention to c classes
He hasn't reviewed a W202 either...
I find a Fiat 500 to be more interesting then then this absurd tech project

I could be wrong but I believe that they switched to a hybrid 4 cylinder because the Turbo V8 just by itself would not pass the new Euro emissions regulations coming down the pike.
Yes, the other AMG 63 cars have a V8, but they are also hybrids for the same reason: Euro emissions. For the people saying “Why couldn’t they put in the V8 hybrid from the new S63,” it probably wouldn’t fit. So we got this instead.
That doesn't explain why they couldn't do a turbo 6. The issue is they skipped over that and went too drastically low in cylinders
Mercedes call Jaguar and ask how to properly market your new vehicles
They might not want to do that now...
have you not been on the internet in the last week?
AMG Copy Nothing and Create Exuberant from now on like the automotive teletubbies.
Maybe type in " new jaguar advert" then come back and edit your post.😂

German here, basically this C63 is more like an Experiment, why they thought to put it onto the Market? No Idea.
It's impressive by itself, if you have driven one of these new C63s you will definitely know what i mean, but i doubt it will sell well because the Core AMG Crowd wants a V8
Prost & Cheers from Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps
In light of emissions regulations and all that jazz, I would have understood if they downsized to a beefy V6 or something. Would it have been a "true" C63? No, not at all.
...but 4 cylinders and hybridisation in a supposedly sporty, enthusiast car? Disgrace.
Viele Grüße.
Fellow German from Berlin here, This might just be a feeling but I think the majority of customers for this car will probably be suburban Americans and people who street race them in Kreuzberg and Essen, not true enthusiasts.
Cheers. Loved visiting your town. Always wanted to after watching Band of Brothers. Hoping to make it back there again!
Part of what made this car special was the sound it made. The fact that it doesn’t make that sound anymore would be a dealbreaker.

Doug’s the kind of guy to discover the dated beard fad which has been promising to finally die ten years ago.
I'm shocked that Doug hasn't reviewed the previous gen C63
Can't wait to hear your review of the upcoming V8 CLE63 compared to this!
6:17 best interior? really? a couple iPads stuck on the dash makes the best interior?
C63 stands for 6.2L V8 not inline 4 cylinder hybrid e
The fact it’s 1-2 inches longer between the front wheels and the windshield than a normal C Class is pretty nuts. That took a lot of engineering.
Awful waste of time, though. No one wants it!
It’s not alot of engineering it’s alot of money to make different parts, car probably has a completely different subframe
With that weight and horsepower/torque, the AMG will eat through tires like candy to a baby.
Especially with all wheel drive and rear wheel steering 🥴
Well nothing screams mercedes more than paying double the value of a car because it has Mercedes written on it...
I gotta agree with the other commenters (and Doug). One of the most appealing things about the previous G63 was the sheer bravado of stuffing a big V8 in one M-B's smaller (at least in the North American market) cars. Going from that to a four-banger was destined to be a bridge too far for most.
I love Doug's objectivity. While he clearly likes MB, he's not afraid to say what he doesn't like about their products. Respect.
This:rumors about V8 coming . At $87K an 4 cylinder, I think not!

At least the M5 still has a V8.
@@csgaming8101 M5 is more like luxury power cruiser compared to C63/M3 type of cars.

Can’t wait for these to be $20k in 10 years
Although, I don’t even think people are buying them new at all for this to happen lol
Respectfully, it’s sacrilege……
The weight gain really can't be because of the hybrid system if the electric range is only 6 miles. If the electric range was 60 miles I would understand the weight gain. Very strange...
@georgobergfell Audi has a phev A3 with 40 miles of range and it's only 230kg heavier than a pure petrol version.
Please Doug, we need a front camera to see the road too 🔥🔥🔥 A Mercedes is a Mercedes ❤

Wow amazing that Mercedes was able to continue it's long history of producing extremely over-priced, very bland looking, overly complicated, unreliable cars.
