- At last, the new Mercedes-AMG S63 has landed… now with a hybrid twist!
Not just an S63, this is now the S63 E-Peformance. It’s the latter bit that hints towards the power of this German luxury machine.
A familiar 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine sits under the bonnet, however it's now also paired up with an electric motor at the rear axle. It’s a similar setup to the latest AMG GT 4-Door, however here the two combine to produce 802hp and 1,430Nm of torque! The result? A claimed 0-60mph time of 3.3 seconds, and an impressive 180mph top speed.
As a result of all the batteries and the motor though, weight is up too - with the new S63 tipping the scales at a whopping 2,520kg. Gulp.
There are a few subtle AMG tweaks to the S63. Along with a new grille, it gets AMG-specific wheels and an intimidating quad-exit exhaust pipe that’s a dead giveaway to the performance hiding underneath the skin.
Inside, it’s as luxurious as any S-Class should be - albeit with an AMG steering wheel and some new displays to add that performance touch.
The price is big though, starting at £186,015. A heavy price to pay, or a worthwhile premium? Stick with Mat to find out!

Thanks Matt I considered getting this S class but I really didn't like that boot capacity is so small so I settled for a 26 year old Bmw

Well now they are 1200 more pounds than those old AMG cars which were always the heaviest to begin with. It’s all a wash.
I think 500 horses on 2.5 bloody tons would make such car just moderately speedy, nowhere near impressively fast

Also think that in the AMG version of the s class you also sit a bit more in the front behind the wheel than in the back. Fortunately, there is still a v8 in it, although in the past that could be a v12.
That interior is of another level, loving the pale wood, it’s gorgeous! 👏👍😀
That wood trim on the dash looks bloody amazing! Probably one of the nicest dash designs I've seen.

This is officially my favourite car in the world now. Saying this as a bmw fan, bmw 7 series comes nowhere near this. Absolute class and masterpiece this is.

Yeah. For this price, you buy a 6l v12 final edition s65 with 550L boot space. This electro environment friendly shite is more for the crumpled slipper, soymilk sippers..
These wheels and chrome details are so classy. V12 would have suited it. But we can only dream:(

It's absolutely stunning, but I still dislike the center console compared to the older Mercs. I'm spoiled when it comes down to performance so in that aspect my daily is a tad faster, but what I absolutely adore about both Mercedes AMG and BMW M -cars is that fantastic feeling of driving something as large as this that's performing like that. That is what gets me reeled in on cars like this (personal all time favorite 2017 BMW M760Li); driving a sort of luxuary mega ship that pulls like a super car. 😊
305 liters of trunk space and 2500 kg weight, this car isn't driving spectacularly. This plug-in hybrid generation of Mercedes performance cars is just wrong. The concept itself is shit.
I agree that the interior styling took a big downgrade. It just looks like any Hyundai now. Though that also means kudos to brands with smaller budgets that are able to make interiors similar to Mercs. It just feels like Merc didn't really try hard enough to set itself apart.

A lot of really cool technology in this car no question. An engineering and manufacturing masterpiece. That will cost a kings ransom to fix when it starts to fail out of warranty period. Probably not for the first owner as few people hold onto cars for very long nowadays, beyond warranty.
I see a fair number of formerly high end Mercedes Benz at Costco and other places and it is quite obvious the the owners may not know how much it will cost to maintain the vehicles when problems arise. I purchased a then new E55 but kept it way too long. Had the idea that "Mercedes lasts forever" but did not realize that once out of warranty it became a major mechanical POS. IT was always in the shop and the Mercedes dealer here in Las Vegas was rather incompetent about how to repair an AMG.
@@kennixox262feels like it peaked somewhere in 2015 or even earlier. I have e280 from 2007, thing is a tank. Have it's issues but deliver what being asked to.
@@kaisuisen2824 I also have a 1989 560SL which is great from a maintenance perspective and I think that a mid 1980's MB wagon or S class might be a good long term sort of car - if one can find a good mechanic.
@@kennixox262 for that one you need mechanic who becomes basically second wife to you, in terms of trust and reliability. But in the long run, it may serve for much longer than newer models.

Honestly this new model isn't to bad, I really love the rims.
Idk, it does look amazing but besides the leather seats and the steering wheel it does look a bit plastic-y and cheap inside with the screens. And $236k plus a weight of 2.5t is a joke

I think this spec is spot on! We should see more of these pushed by the manufacturers! All the black on black is meh. I guess this is also more tailored to the American clientele, who actually prefer lighter interior.
Also, the boot is way too small. No roadtrips.
Interesting that Mercedes havent quite cracked the hybrid system yet. They've been in the space for quite some time so would have hoped they'd worked out the kinks by now

It weighs 2630 kg almost 450 kg more than previous s63 model,why should 1 e motor plus inverter and battery pack weigh 400 kg,lucid air e motor has 670 hp 820 nm that weighs only 31 kg with inverter and transmission it weighs only 72 kg,if mercedes wanted they easily could do the same thing with 100 kg weight gain with more energy dense battery and more efficient electric drive unite .

I feel like every modern and luxury vehicle just feels the same and it doesn't have that excitement that you'd expect from a expensive sedan or basically any car
I usually prefer the styling of the Audi a 8, but I gotta say that is one pretty car inside and out.

The lazy throttle and transmission response is typical in Comfort mode for non-hybrid Merc models too.
Yes you can use Sport mode and it gives a throttle pedal that is actually responsive but the problem then is that the transmission uses the entire rev range of the engine before shifting gears.....
There should be a drive mode between Comfort and Sport tbh.
you can always upshift manually
@adampavella1225 yup that is true, I often do use that manual mode with the drive mode in Comfort. Ofcourse the delayed transmission response is still there, but compared to fully automatic, it's much better for highway overtakes.
This car has Sport+ unlike previous-gen S560s so it does actually have the mode between Comfort and Sport, it's just called Sport now and the old Sport is now Sport+

@@TeoZMuff313I'd have to disagree, I'd imagine just idling that v8 consumes quite a bit of fuel, so having it of when not needed, why not, and I don't see when that 800hp would be needed instantly in normal traffic

I’ve ditched PHEVs (had a 530e for 5 years) and instead got an i7 for the reasons you’ve shared: the hybrid drive trains taught me to go either full electric or full petrol. Nothing in between.

Much of his gripes about the comfort mode on the highway are solved with a good intelligent mode setup. In that case setup intelligent to prescribe S+ on the drive train and comfort on the suspension.
Great review, as always! However, the wooden dash trim and central air vents reflect very distractingly in the windscreen. Did MB not think about that?

I think the S class as a range has been unrivalled for decades but like most most ranges there is a variant that makes no sense and is either inferior financially or dynamically and this appears to be both.
The engine should not shut off at highway speeds but remain idling in comfort mode , for quicker overtaking.
People wanting the car to be sporty in comfort mode... Talk about missing the THE POINT.
And a need for instant overtaking on the highway... OK, kid. 😅
How about you just switch to sport mode and play your youngling games and leave Comfort for the adults who just want to travel, not try to demonstrate dick size (play ego games) on the highway?
