Years ago many people used to think that orthodontic treatment was only for young kids, and that's not the case today. A gentleman quoted a recent study that came out, and in that study, he said that the smile is the first thing that people notice about people today, period. It used to be the eyes, but now it is the smile. And, I see so many adults that are seeking treatment today, especially with all the technology we have today. In our practice it is not uncommon at all for kids to come in for treatment, and the parents to come in for treatment. We will see mom and dad. We recently had a lot of grandmothers coming in. We have daughters getting married and grandma's getting braces because she wants a beautiful smile. The daughters want beautiful smiles for mom. And often times as we age our self esteem, you know, life changes occur. Either, death of a spouse or death of a family member. We all go through emotional changes as we age. We wish we could stay looking young forever but that's not the reality in life. But, it's amazing that the subtleties, that when you take someones smile that looks old because, teeth are crooked and malformed and misshaped, and you straighten teeth and give them a beautiful smile that follows the curvature of the lip, it really gives them that youthfulness back that they long desire for over the years. So, adult treatment is very very common today, and definitely becoming more common as we progress.
How old is too old? I say no one is too old to have orthodontic treatment. We have, as I mentioned, patients into the 80's that have come in and sought treatment. Sometimes there are limitations and challenges with patients of that age, but there's always something that we can do to improve the smile. We may not ever get perfection and that's important, because, one case sticks into my mind when we talk about "how old is too old," and I literally had an eighty year old woman walk into my office one day, and she brought a photo in, of when she was 25 years old, and she said, "Dr. Schaefer, can you make my smile look like this?" And, she had a beautiful smile already, had already had orthodontic treatment three or four times, had a really good finish orthodontically, what we would consider a good finish, but just had some alignment problems, just minor alignment problems with her teeth. And I tell all of our patients that sometimes orthodontics is about the microns, it's the the minutia stuff, that you know really, is an artistic part of being an orthodontist. And, it's not really about being a mechanic. We're good mechanics about moving teeth and putting things where we want them, but there's an artistic part, which is usually the finishing stage and how we, you know, detail things at the end of treatment.

When it comes to braces at an older age, you want a quick result. Always go with traditional braces, Invisalign takes way too long and they do not correct overbites and other conditions. Invisalign is more for people who have had braces at a younger age or they have minimal issues with their teeth.

I am 55 and I have severe overbite. The Orthodontist says braces are my only choice here to fix the problem and to expect treatment to be 2 years long. I am wearing my teeth down in a big way as I am apparently a grinder at night. I have also started making problem areas behind my upper front teeth that pains me some. I am looking at $5700 and that doesn’t include what my normal dentist needs to do after the braces come off. Needless to say I am scared over this whole process. Money really isn’t my biggest problem here. I really want to save my teeth as I’m pretty sure I still have a good 30 years of life, maybe longer since we as a society are living longer. I go for more consultation over all this next week. I need to shake the fear and go for it..

I refused to get treatment and put on braces when i was a teenage because at that time my generation considered having braces makes you look like a nerd and it's a license to get bullied just cause you have pieces of metal on your teeth. Now the generation is lucky cause getting braces is accepted even as a trend. I am coming 30 this year, i haven't got enough money to afford tho, but when i do, i am definitely getting one.

when I was 13 I had braces. a long time ago.. I got bored with the retainers and it didn't take long before my overbite/buck tooth smile returned. at 40 I decided I'd had enough. went through the treatment again this time addressing the molar rotations that my childhood orthodontist ignored... 20 months later my braces came off. I started off with a Hawley retainer that I wore for 30 years and it finally gave up the ghost. I switched to the newer clear essix retainer that I wear every night. just turned 74 and I'm determined to keep my teeth. so listen up. wear your retainer. did you hear that?

it's true. after you got ur braces off, u need to wear the retainers. As the name implies, 'retainers'
it retains the fixed teeth, so as not to return from the old self.

I'm 13, and my mom does NOT want me to get braces (even though I'm turning 14 in a month) because she believes that I would have to repeat braces when I'm older (which is stupid, because if I wear my retainers or get permanent ones, my teeth won't move a lot) also having my braces later would take longer (I have two incisors missing, either they can't come up because there are teeth taking up their space or the teeth are not even there, also I have a canine that's way up my gums, which is very hard to clean.

Please don't go for braces and extractions, they cause jaw joint issues like tmd and extractions cause sleep apnea do your research, natural teeth is the best.

Something that has worked for thousands of people for years and you're over here trying to change the world in a comment section. So what would your solution be if one should choose to correct their teeth?

@@Gratefulskanda I'm sorry I am unable to find the website you are talking about. No need though, I see we have a conspiracy theory situation going on here. One person's thoughts over thousands of proven successful cases. I'm 38 years old, I live in the USA - most, if not all of the people in my life that needed teeth correction have had braces at one point and time. They are all happy. I can tell because they smile, and their smiles beautiful. Have you had braces, or know anyone who has had the side affects that you are stating?

@@Gratefulskanda Out of respect for your thoughts I will check this out. However, there is overwhelming proof that braces are a viable and successful option for most people looking to improve their smile/bite/TMJ. I'm sorry if you had an isolated bad experience.
