    A common question that I get is "how often do I have to wear my retainer?" Literally, I tell patients, you wear a retainer for as long as you want your teeth to be straight. Once we remove the appliances, or the braces, studies show it takes a minimum of 6 months for the bone and the tissue fibers to firm up again. The most stable position you are orthodontically is the way you initially come to us; and what we do is we take your teeth and move them to what we consider ideal, because everyone wants a perfectly straight smile, and we forget as individuals that we're fighting other forces in the mouth: we have the lips, we have the cheeks, we have the tongue.
    Our teeth have an anatomical position in our mouth that's called neutral zone. In order to hold those teeth after braces come off and to keep perfectly straight teeth, you have to retain them. And that's no different than any other part of our body. I tell the ladies, if you want to have blonde hair and continue to die your hair, you have to do that over the years. If you want to have beautiful nails, you have to maintain your nails. Beautiful teeth, you have to maintain those teeth, so, it's the same no matter what aspect in life that we want to maintain that youthfulness, we have to do something to keep it.
    With retainers, after about the first year of orthodontic treatment, I tell people, teeth are fairly stable at that point. What happens after that, retainers become an insurance policy, and the reason that I say that is, no matter if you have braces or not, as we continue to age, everyone gets tooth movement, everyone. How much? That's the unknown variable.
    I've been very fortunate in my life, I've never had braces before, but I've had very little tooth movement throughout my life. I've had other patients who have had a lot of tooth movement throughout life. And you just don't know which one you're going to be. And, orthodontic patients, because they're used to perfectly straight teeth, if a tooth moves just a little bit, they pick it up instantly, like that.
    So I always encourage patients to continue to wear retainers for the rest of their life, and it's just minimizing the chances of tooth movement over the years, is all you're doing. You're increasing your odds of keeping straight teeth.

    right now am on braces.
    But I want to know if I can eat food normally how I wanted so badly. And I also want to know if I can roam around the day hour without the retainers.
    And if I can only wear the retainers drying my bed time.

    Quick question. I have not worn my clear retainer for a few years, and I have noticed slight movement in one of my teeth. I popped my retainer in the other day, and while it does go on, it is quite tight. Is it ok to just wear it 24/7, so that my teeth move back to the retainer positioning? I know the smart answer would be to visit my orthodontist, but I am only 22, and I don't think my parents are willing to pay for more work, and I don't even know how much a visit cost.

      Eric Winn My dentist said that you can wear it for as long as you want

      Yes! Wear it as often as you can and ease it back into the teeth so it fits comfortably. Don't force it. If you can do that the teeth will resume their finished positions again.

    I had a crown done recently and my teeth have shifted. There is a gap where food is getting caught as well. It’s on my lower left side.
    So, the dentist is going to re do the crown and he said I may have to use a retainer when I sleep at night. This is bothering me as it seems daunting to have to do this the rest of my life. Not sure what to think about all of this. But, dentist said we don’t know yet. He’s got to do the crown first.

      Retainers restrict jaw movement,and cause jaw joint issues.like tmd.better to have crooked teeth than experiencing jaw problems.

    I wear a retainer on my bottom teeth, but my teeth hurt when I put it on. Is that okay?

    • @greenkitty82
      @greenkitty82 4 года назад

      Lord Bolin wear it more often. Your teeth hurt because they start moving as soon as you take it out. Try wearing it every night and if it still hurts try wearing it in the day too.

  • @jackson.6282
    @jackson.6282 6 лет назад +2

    No you do not have to wear a retainer as long as you have proper oral posture. (Holding tongue on the roof of the mouth and proper adult swallow)

    do I have to wear it while sleeping

    • @jaredmatias3537
      @jaredmatias3537 7 лет назад

      Yes, wear it full time (24 hours) everyday for at least six months that way the teeth settle firmly in the bone. But in order to be 100% sure your teeth won't relapse to its initial position, it is recommended to be worn at least during the evening for life. Hope this helps! :)
