Beecroft Orthodontics -- How Long Should Someone Wear a Retainer After Their Braces Are Removed?

- www.beecroftortho.com/ - "This is the number one question that I get after I take someone's braces. When we get their braces off, it would be a big celebration and then we give them the retainers. They would say, okay, how long do I have to wear my retainers? It's a good question and it's a valid question. So, I would like to talk about different kinds of retainers, why we use them and how long you need to wear them.
The retainer that we used most often is a clear plastic retainer and this is a representation of it. This is really nice for a couple of reasons. The number one reason is there are retainers that have a metal wire that go across the front teeth. Those have their pros and cons. There's nothing worse than getting your braces off and all that metal out of your mouth and then putting a metal wire in someone's mouth and say, "okay now you have to wear them full time for a few months".
So, we use the clear plastic retainers, it works really well. This is a representation of someone's upper teeth, nice and straight after braces and the clear retainer just kind of pops right in like that. It's very form-fitting and very easy to get used to, even when speaking. Usually, you can get used to it within a day or two. It doesn't irritate the tongue, lips and the very nice thing is it's very snug all around the teeth. So, it's not going to allow those teeth to move, twist and turn.
Why is this important? When you get your braces off, your braces have moved your teeth in to a position where they are not naturally accustomed. Your teeth were crooked for a reason. Usually, it's because your mouth and its natural habitat, your tongue, cheek, lips, all those forces that were in place have caused your teeth to go to the position that they were in, initially. We've put them in almost unnatural position, the position that they don't want to be in at first so it's going to take a little bit of time for your teeth to get used to it and your mouth adapting. The retainers are going to keep your teeth in place as the tongue, lips and cheeks will be used to having the teeth there. Also, the teeth will kind of reorganize themselves in the bones.
The question I get is, "how long do I have to wear them?" We ask patients to wear their retainer for three months full-time. Those first three months, the teeth are going to tend to move the quickest. In three months full-time, you're only taking the retainer out to eat, brush and during special occasions and things like big dates and public speeches. You need to wear them at least 22-23 hours a day and you'll notice that if you take it out those teeth will move pretty quickly.
After about three months, we will see the patient again. If everything looks good and if they've been wearing the retainer well at that point, we will switch to night time wear and that's really great for people. They don't have to worry taking the retainer in and out at lunch, school or at work. They can just pop it in when they go to bed and take it out in the morning. It usually keeps the teeth where they need to be.
Do I have to put my retainer for the rest of my life? This is what I tell people, if you want the one hundred percent guarantee that your teeth will stay where they are, then the only way to do that is to wear the retainer. Everyone is a little bit different like some people can get away after a certain time or period from wearing the retainer. Other people's teeth are going to be a little bit unstable just because of the place we put them and the natural environment of their mouth. Those people will need to wear their retainer a little bit more.
After about a year of wearing them at night, I let people know that now it's your turn to be an orthodontist. When you take the retainer, in and out, you wanted to feel very passive on your teeth. You don't want that tight feeling, "oh hey, my teeth have moved during the day, you don't want that at all and that's when you know that you need to wear your retainer a little bit more. So, if you have that passive feeling when the retainer comes in and out then you know okay, I can get away with wearing the retainer a little less maybe wear it once a week, couple times a month or wearing it for a month. If you're going to do that, I would caution people to always have their retainer there and always try it in every now and then to make sure you're getting that nice passive feeling." - Dr. Matt Beecroft

Braces is like being in jail then your retainer is like being on probation after jail 😂
haha good example!
Deshone Johnson I’m wearing my retainers right now
Deshone Johnson i feel ya. I'm one year in and cant wait until april
Deshone Johnson yes omfg
😁
Don’t stop wearing them.
Just don’t.
Your adult self will thank you.
But how much time...?
If my braces case was take only months
Fuck
Progressives Thriving can I we’re them at night time when I get them taken off
This statement has a soooo TRUE!!!. I had braces in high school and was so happy when they were off. I wasn’t disciplined enough to wear retainers every night. Fast forward to today and my adult self is kicking me. Now my teeth had gone back being crooked and I have to get braces again *sighs* 😞..
But my orthodontist told me to wear them for 10 months full day and 6 months at night then I’m done, though I still am scared what if they shift after that ?
I'd rather just have braces on then have to worry about having to take a retainer on and off all day long -_-
Thomas Williams do you have braces? They suck they hurt you can't eat normal when you do eat you get food in them. They stop you at the airport ... haha okay the last one was a joke but I rather deal with retainers especially the night time one... that's easy
@@djosserperrah9563 I had braces way rather have them than a retainer
@@logan2906 welp I'm sorry that you're in the place. May I ask why ? Why do you rather braces than a retainer
@@djosserperrah9563 you dont have to worry about losing them, and they are more durable. When you break your retainer, it takes forever for the orthodontist to respond, so then your teeth go back to how they were before.
@@logan2906 do you wear yours only at night or all day

3 months to a year !!!!!???????? wtf i thought once getting them out id be freeeee ! buuuuuuuuuuuut no -.-
I Knowwwwww
like, wtf kind of RAW DEAL is that anyway???????????????????
Stephanie Ridgway 3 months to a year??? I heard 10 years so your teeth can lose their memory so they won’t go back
I wears them for 2 years now
I was told I'd have to wear it for the rest of my life so I've never bothered 😬
Yes, you have to wear your retainer for the rest of your life typically. For me, I wore the retainer for 1 year then I completely stopped. 5 years later, there's only a minor gap between my right canine and the next tooth towards the back. Otherwise, my teeth are perfect. But if you want your teeth to be completely perfect for the rest of your life, keep it on consistently. There's not much effort involved, so take advantage of it. Beautiful teeth makes a huge difference in your appearance and the way you smile. Stay confident
my aunt has the same experience..
She is the only who had braces in my family.. after the braces come off, idk about the retainer since i never seen it.. but, her teeths are still fine looking now.. it had been years since her braces are off.. i think one of the reason for this is she's a vegetarian.. maybe that made it easier to retain the teeth position?
ima be 80 years old and have retainers ugh
But you will also have the prettiest, straightest teeth in the retirement home ;)

I had braces for 5 years!!! I got them off 2 years ago and have not been very good at wearing my retainer. I will go months without wearing it. Let me tell you my teeth definitely moved. Cosmetically you cant really tell, but it HURTS towear my retainer now. But, I'm determined to get my teeth back to the way they were. I didn't suffer through 5 years of braces for nothing! I am getting back into the routine of wearing it whenever I am home.
Kayla Delucia Did it work?? I'm in the same situation haha. My retainer still fits--it's a very tight fit, but I can get it in and it stays in.
Retaineres are a nightmare!!! I've now lost mine and have no idea how much it will cost to get it replaced when it was molded to fit my etc., that metal bar is a nightmare, it's painful to wear but now my teeth are DEFINATELY starting to move all over the place, I must have lost the thing about 5 years ago now, and was getting away with it - but - NO LONGER
There HAS to be a less painful one than the one I had, and the idea of having to have to wear it for life, is EXTREMELY depressing actually!!!

Kayla Delucia I know right they are so tight on me and psss my name is Kayla too
Omg I've had braces for 3 years and I have the dumb metal retainer. And even through wear it 24/7, I know it's not working cause my teeth are still moving! Such a rip off
I had my braces from 2002 to 2007. It's 2021 and I still have my retainers which I only sleep with every second night or so. Happy to say my teeth has not moved out of place, and I had some skew teeth!!
Ima wear my retainer forever because, it doesn’t show my gap no more 😂
i had braces for 2 years then wore my retainer for 5 months then lost it and within a month of not wearing it my teeth went back to their original form (very crooked) its so frustrating but im getting braces again in a couple weeks then they said i need to wear the retainer for a good 3 years..ugh if only i was blessed with straight teeth naturally
same here
Do you live in the UK?
Same here too
nonamed person There is no such thing as “Naturally straight teeth” Your teeth sit in a balance zone between the forces of the tongue lips and cheeks. Braces move the teeth but dont solve the problem with the muscles which move them. Your teeth moving back to being crooked is merely a result of you using your facial muscles and your tongue incorrectly. You can change this and make your teeth straight again. Retention is bullshit. You shouldnt have to wear retention to keep your teeth straight. All our ancestors had straight teeth their entire lives because their diets trained their facial muscles to be used correctly. Go to the orthotropics RUclips channel if you want to learn more about this and to help you fix your problem
@@markosabdallah4796 thank you for enlighten people, it seems you have knowledge about that topic, i have a question: i'm 25 now and i had braces when i was a Teenager i wear it 1 and a half year but still after that i wear retainers (on the backside of the lower teeth) and i have a double chin and it seems like my jaw is also small and my chin is recessed and tiny and i got my wisdom teeth removed, do the retainers worked as a brake and hold my teeth in the same Position so did the same with my jaw? is that the reason why i have a tiny chin and jaw??
As a teen I had braces. Got bored with retainers and just stopped wearing them. Teeth drifted over the years and my overbite reappeared and found another round of braces at almost 40 the solution. Here’s my advice. Wear the retainers. Did you hear that? Floss, brush. Pop those retainers in. Go to sleep. In the am take them out for the day. Repeat. Stop complaining. I’m 73 now. Still wearing my retainers. I’m keeping my teeth
lol get out of here troll
I wear my retainers only when I’m sleeping. It’s been 2 years and they still fit perfectly.
Love this video, he doesn't try to push the "perfect teeth" bullshit but encourages people to think about their own reasons and needs and is on the whole very articulate about the topic.
its depressing that braces don't fix your teeth permanently! What is the point? I have 6 more months braces and I thought I would be done after my retainer. .......Are some people born with perfectly straight teeth?
I had braces on for 2 years and they have moved back to normal again so fustrated 👎
Elle Parfitt
wow . But if you wear a retainer, I think it will prevent that, right?
it dosent fit
I feel your pain. I have to wear a retainer too. However, he said wear it full time for the first 3 months, my orthodontist said to wear them full time for a week. I only have to wear it at night.
I've had my braces for 3 years don't complain
This is the nicest way to say, you're wearing it for the rest of your damn life bish😂

So basically from all the reviews Ive seen, neither is better than the other, as the orthodontist and as the patient -- both parties have to do their part to get the outcome that is expected and the best treatment for the patient, and as a patient maintaining your own teeth shouldn't be that difficult. Thanks for the review it has given me a better understanding.
i lost my retainers for over a month and couldnt afford to repair them. just found them and omg it KILLS
Lucky you found them
I am starting to develop a overbite after neglecting my teeth. I got my braces off like 5 months ago and although my retainer still fits I don’t think it is actually fixing my teeth, I’m horrified of the fact I will have to face my orthodontists and explain what. Happend.
I hate my top retainer so much ! Half of it is so tight and the other side is loose 😒
Oh my gosh same!
Probably the side you chew with is the more tight side, those teeth move slightly due to the forces of chewing, therefore you have a more tighter side of the retainer.
Sonia V snaps, I had only one tooth taken out, the side where the tooth was taken out is a lot tighter than the other side
Sameee 😭
same. And so the retainer rubs on my gums. The bruise hurt
Muahaha I've rare wore my retainer after braces after a while . Five years later I tried my retainers and they still fit.
Blue Jay i nearly had a seizure trying to read this
try to leave them on for a night and you ll see how much the moved, when you wake up with excruciating pain
I have seen many videos of patients. But this one I would recommend everyone to see. Best u always get from an expert.
I really wish I just got an invisalign. I wore braces that constantly broke, from the wires, the brackets, the rubber bands that went around them, and they were expensive af. Five and a half years of wearing these metal demons cost about $27,000.
Not only that, but when I moved, we didn't have an orthodontist for half a year until we found the same people in a location near us. I went in and turns out the wire was so misaligned it was buried into my gums about 3 inches.
When I got my retainer, I thought I would be fine. Being the forgetful person I am, I accidentally threw out both retainers and I spent an hour with the janitor searching through the dumpster for my retainers. I only found one. My dad spent 3 months trying to schedule an appointment b/c you could only call them at our location on Thursdays. So now, I have to deal with that 1 crooked tooth that totally throws off my smile. It kind of hides behind one of my bottom front teeth now.
Very helpful. My wife just had her braces removed after three years! The doctor and crew told her to wear the retainers at night and when she is home. But, she works about 60 hours a week! I will show her this video tonight.
Thank you.
You're a great husband

Secret Cleaning Tip: To clean retainers simply soak in white vinegar for 15 minutes... and then scrub with toothbrush and watch ALL plaque come off with ease... White vinegar is extremely cheap to buy!!! A couple of dollars for a huge bottle... THANK ME LATER! :D
Adam G BOI you do not scrub retainers! It will scratch and ruin It! Literally my dentist made sure to specify that scrubbing is not something to do to your retainer and you're gonna sit here and lie to these people!?
Omni - Slash oh gosh i tootbrush mine but only use toothpaste
Omni - Slash My orthodontist said the complete opposite. My retainers are also not scratched. The retainers rubbing aganist one another in your mouth probably inflicts more damage than a toothbrush would. I did some research online and your retainers need to be brushed out at least once a day..just like your teeth need brushing. This removes any possible debris, etc. Also, that using toothpaste and mouthwash isn't good on your retainers. Whenever my retainers aren't in my mouth, they are soaking in a cleaning solution (mild soap and water). I don't even use my retainer case. Once a day they get brushed out with baking soda as well and put right back in the solution.
I had all four of my wisdom teeth extracted about a year after my braces were removed because they had begun to shift under my back molars. During my healing process, I was told to leave my retainers out for at least a week's time. I did, and when I tried to wear them again afterwards it was very painful. I basically forced myself to wear them for short periods of time and slowly move back to wearing them all night, but the gaps from removing two teeth before the braces were put on have begun to reappear. They're hardly noticeable, but I'm not going to be able to get away with not wearing it for weeks at a time. If I go more than three days I can barely get them to fit, and I haven't had braces since 2014.
My sightly move again after stop using retainer.what should i do?
Shit it's best I take all my teeth out one time and have no worries.
😂😂
I had braces in 2002. I’m still wearing my retainers at night. I’ve had new ones made at my dentists. Not every night, but minimum a week a of night a month.

What's your doctor told you
I had braces from the age of 12 - 16 years old. I was wearing my clear retainer diligently until I hit my 20s. Then I stopped wearing it. I'm now 34 and noticed my teeth started shifting again. Luckily I still kept my clear retainer and it's in good shape. I brushed them and put them in, and oh boy are they tight. Lol. But at least they still fit over my teeth.
Weird. I've had to have my retainers for the rest of my life. They begin to move after a few days or so.
That’s an essix retainer, right?
I asked my dentist if I could get those instead, but he said that it let my teeth touch properly
Just got my braces off I got my retainers and bottem ones come off easy but top one hurts when I try to take it off and it’s rly tight is that normal??
I got a question and please i need an answer do you choose which retainers to wear once the braces are removed or your dentist should choose witch retainers to wear i need an answer please?
If you wear the retainer the full year correctly. After a year you don't have to wear it as often as you have too. I only wore mine 5 times a month when I sleep. If you have anxiety of your over bite or crooked teeth coming back just recommend jaw surgery that permanently correct your bite. Get dental implants in some areas where it's bad.
Great video exactly what I needed to know
Have a good day.
I just wanna ask if, Is it okay to take my braces off and go for retainer since it's almost 6 months and my teeth were aligned now or Should I have to wear it for yrs?..Thank you💞

I got my braces off about a month ago and have been wearing my retainers ever since, I have a metal retainer in all the time at the back of my teeth. How soon are retainers fitted? I've been without on my top teeth since May. I was told I would get it after the work with my bottom wire was finished. Now the bottom wire has had to come out quickly as there was a problem with it so all I have is a fixed wire before I get my impressions and finally retainers in about another month. What you have said about the teeth moving most in the first 3 months is really worrying which is what i feel they have done.

Teeth tend to shift forward as people age. Best to prevent crowding and keeping your smile perfect the way it was by wearing a retainer indefinitely seems like the right thing to do.

I have the clear retainer but it puts my bite off so I'm only biting on my back right wisdom tooth when I take it out. Anyone else experience bite problems with the clear retainer? I don't wear my retainers for days at a time. As long as you don't let them get too crooked you can just get them back in shape after like 4 or 5 days.
I was told that I should wear my retainers for only night time, but I still wear it all day every day even though I was asked to wear it night time. Wearing my retainers all day every day for 15 years straight up until the point where I don't have to wear it anymore in hopes that my teeth doesn't shift back to its original place. Good idea or no?

Can anyone explain to me WHY my teeth have SHIFTED after having my braces off for onLY ONE WEEK and I've had my retainers in THIS WHOLE TIME WHILE CLEANING THEM DUTIFULLY?? please help 😭😭
did ur orthodontist make ur bite perfect ?? Perfect bite is very important because if ur upper and lower teeth ar locking naturally then there are very few chances of them to shift.
what is my retainer feels a little loose????
Question: Will the tooth spacing after extractions that's closed after braces open again, if the retainer isn't worn?
***** Aw, man... Are there any permanent retainers that I can have implanted, do you know?
no. permanent retainers can only be placed on anterior teeth (incisors and canines). there is too much biting force distributed during chewing to place them on the molars.
Did u found an answer?
I just got my braces off and I hate retainers especially the hollow ones is what I have in they already broke
I have the wire kind of retainer but I only wear it at night
My dentist said i have to wear them for ever, till the day I die. Is that true?
Have been wearing my retainers for 8 months now but it makes my teeth very weak guess they will never go back
My doctor told me I have to wear night time wear for the rest of my life.:(

God I fuckin hate my retainers. Especially having to take them on off when I have to eat and throughly washing them
can i have it i want and need one
***** :(
Abs 2805 everyone has their own retainer because no ones mouth structure is exactly the same so it could make your teeth even more crooked if you use someone elses
***** Ok i need one
+Abs 2805 you don't just buy one are you serious? You get them after braces
Do you even wear it at night when you are sleeping
I have a big question! So, right now I am 12 years old an I am curently wearing a herbts device. I only have 4 braces on my top 4 teeth, but they are perfectly straight. That is because when I rotate the key, it will seperate my teeth. After I get them off, will I need to wear a retaner ONLY on my top 4 teeth. PLEASE ANSWER THIS QUESTION!
You'd most likely have a full retainer.
I got my retrainer today and he said only wear them at night. I only got it today is this right?
I got my braces off in August and when I got my retainer he said only wear them at night and my teeth are still straight! It's working well for me, but everyone is different. If your retainer feels tight when you put it in, then maybe wear it more often.
they gave me the wire one , annoying af . how can i get one of these plastic ones?
