Respect to Sigma for showing so much love for Christopher's channel. I was absolutely sure that he was going to be among the first to review this lens. Kudos!
I own the 24-70 GM and had the chance to test the 24-70 from Sigma and am positively annoyed by the great performance of the Sigma. It's sharper and the minimum focus distance is way shorter!
Your unbiased reviews really helped me make my decision on a new lens. I went with this Sigma 24-70 over the Sony 24-105 and Tamron 28-75. Thanks for your high quality, no-bs reviews.
I’ve had the lens for a week now and it’s worth every penny. I love the excellent sharpness and rendering at all focal lengths. At 50mm it’s incredibly sharp. It’s early days with this lens but I suspect it will be on my camera for a long time. Heavy? Yes. Worth the weight? Yes.
It’s amazing I just watch you do the Canon review for the RF 24-70 which is over double the price. And this way outperformed it. This is why Canon doesn’t like third-party manufacturers make lenses.
I own this lens for about two weeks and i love it! Don't have any autofocus problems or some extreme flaring as others describe, unless you do something really stupid. Mine copy seems to be well centred as well so i'm pretty satisfied. Sharpness is outstanding as is the build quality. Sigma keeps making really awesome lenses, hope to see FE 70-200 F2.8 soon! Oh and quick tip for ya. If the rubber part of the rubber lens hood seems faded or weared out, put a tiny bit of silicone based oil on your finger and smudge it on. It will look like new.
There are many options of full frame e-mount cameras at this focal range. The default kit zoom Sony FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS, the Sony Zeiss FE 24-70mm f/4 OSS with a recently reduced price, the little more expensive Tamron FE 28-75mm f/2.8, the very expensive Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM and the latest Sigma FE 24-70mm f/2.8. Nowadays there is large variety of e-mount lenses and that makes e-mount cameras more attractive. The Sigma FE 24-70mm f/2.8 is available only for the E-Mount and L-Mount mirrorless cameras but it seems to me that has a design for SLR cameras. From the review it looks inferior to the Sony FE 24-70 f/2.8 GM but it has nearly the half the price and that is usually more important. Since the era of autofocus lenses for film SLR cameras, Sigma, Tamron and sometimes Tokina have been producing f/2.8 zoom lenses with a similar price of similar Nikon, Canon f/4 zoom lenses but inferior quality of similar Nikon, Canon f/2.8 lenses.
Huge fun of your chanell and you would really help answering my question!!!! Is the sigma sharper than the tamron so that it justifies the extra money??? Thank you so much for your reviews

Got this lens in the mail today. Chris, I don't think I can justify ever buying another Sony lens when Sigma is producing such quality for half the price. I recently bought their 70mm for marco and the sharpness is stupidly good.
Impressive image quality as expected, at a competitive price. Personally I prefer the Tamron 28-75 paired with the 17-28, because of the small size and light weight. Paired with a relatively light mirrorless body they're great for travelling.
Great review as always.. I have been saving for the new canon 70-200mm RF, and I would really like to see you do a review on it because I’ve been hearing that it has a few issues. Thank you for all your great work with these lens reviews.
Came here looking for someone who owns the original art version. I thought I was the only one haha. So let me fill you in on the 411 of these two lenses. This 24-70 ART is a new design compared to the one that we already have in EF mount. You could get yours converted to E-mount but it is not the same optics as this new one we see here in the video. Once again sharpness was Sigma's main goal with this new lens. It's sharp and great from all that I've seen, and it is a decent amount sharper than our version from what I can tell...BUT don't just write off the old one you have just yet. It's more special than you know depending on what you shoot. What very few people know about the first 24-70 ART is that it's essentially a modern redesign of a Zeiss Vario-Sonnar optical formula. It has bokeh and character to it that is stunning at times compared to most 24-70 lenses in existence. This was really an under the radar detail and Sigma didn't really advertise that fact but this lens has gotten a bad rap because it didn't get very much press to begin with, and the press that it did get from the reviewers? Most of them were pretty brutal on critiquing the lens and were disappointed with it's performance. The reason being because this is an ART lens and people's expectations were set sooo high after all those great prime lenses they put out. So when the reviews came out, people were pretty underwhelmed with the sharpness and so they were all like "pass this one up" but all the reviews seemed to focus more on landscape work and shots of brick walls. Sharpness on our lens took a bit of a back seat and instead they gave us gorgeous smooth bokeh and a bit of character (unheard of in an ART lens) Character and 3D pop is something these new ART lenses do lack that very few seem to really talk about. This new 24-70 has nice enough bokeh but the DSLR version just has a little extra "special sauce" or "pixie dust" to it's rendering. The ART line of lenses are incredibly sharp but the rendering is pretty flat, and cold/sterile at times depending on the lens and especially when you compare the ART primes to something like a Zeiss prime. Our 24-70 is the exception to that rule and was imo the best ART lens for bokeh and character up until the 35mm f/1.2 just came out. That thing renders an image that almost has a medium format look to it. So to wrap this novel up lol your current 24-70 is excellent for portraits in comparison to a lot of other modern zoom lenses and If you shoot more landscapes than portraits, you'll benefit from the new model but If you shoot a lot of portraits stick with what you got. It's a hidden gem, and yes it has OS too 👌🏽
Hi Christoper, I appreciate your lens reviews very much, they are very helpful for me. Thanks a lot for your work. I am using an A7iii. In order to understand the test setup I would like to know: How are the dimensions of the test picture / test pattern, and what is the diameter of the circles on your test pattern?
Advice needed..... if you had to choose between this and the tamron g2 which would you pick for both apsc and full frame I need your advice and you are the only reviewer I trust
Thank you , Chris, for giving us the best, most independent and most useful lens tests in the net. A Merry Christmas to you and your beloved ones. By the way: this seems to be the third Sigma Art Lens I have to buy ;)
It's a little bit sharper than the Tamron, but the difference in bokeh is IMO the bigger difference. After watching both videos I feel pretty bad that I most likely have to go with the cheaper option. I think the difference in price is worth every penny for Sigma, it's just that much better. I find it interesting that Sigma choose to sacrifice distorsion so heavily, and probably because of that the lens performs so much better on corners and close range. They trust that the cameras correction handles that aspect, while Tamron seems to have much, much more tolerable distortions - but much more fringing in corners and close-up.
Great video. There was problems with this lens getting dust inside the optics. Sigma fixed this problem on later models. Supposedly, any lens with a serial number above 5564*** was corrected by Sigma by better sealing. They did clean any earlier lenses for free if you paid for shipping. I own a later model of this lens and it is superb.
“The lock … Is frankly unnecessary.” That’s SO TRUE, I find it completely obsolete, and it doesn’t really lock the lens given how heavy the optics are.
Hi Chris, thank you very much for this review! Hopefully Sigma will launch such lenses for Canon RF and Nikon Z mount as well. I’m happy with my Canon EF 4.0/24-105mm L USM IS Mk. II attached via adapter with control ring on my Canon RP. Cheers, Ralf
Thanks for good review! I would be very interested in seeing example images comparing the bokeh at 70mm 2.8, for this Sigma and the Tamron 28-75. And also examples comparing the bokeh of those two at 55mm 2.8, with Sony 16-55 2.8 on APS-C.
@@christopherfrost so when you show test pictures at f/4 f/5.6 f/8 f/11 how does that happen if aperture stays fixed at f/2.8 .... excuse my ignorance .....new in this
@@MakeKnowledgeFree because he adjusted the aperture. The lens isn't stuck at 2.8. You can adjust any aperture you want from 2.8 to the max aperture at any focal length you wish. 2.8 is the widest you can go thru the entire zoom range.
To add on to Eccentric Smithy's comment... There are zoom lenses that will have a wider aperture but increases when you zoom in. Such as have an F4 at 70mm, and F5.5 at 200mm. The aperture between those ranges of 70 and 200 will be between F4 and F5.5. as their widest amnount but will have the ability typically to go up to F22. This lens can remain at 2.8 throughout its 24-70mm range, but you can manually change anywhere from F2.8 to F22 anywhere within that range. This constant wider aperture throughout the range typically means a better-built lens than those that fluctuate. If it was stuck at 2.8 it would be useless to many people who were doing large groups of people, architecture/RE photography as well as a lot of outdoor pictures. It really depends on what you are shooting and what you want to be in focus.
Dear Chris, I think for the first time I disagree with you: If both lenses are very versatile, Sigma is 50% heavier than Tamron. For me, it's huge, specially when hiking on the mountain, during the all day. I agree that Sigma is better than Tamron, but not for hiking. Anyway, thank you for all your valuable effort and happy New year 2020!
I had a chance to play with the lens over Xmas break while I was in LA, im a hybrid shooter so cinema/photography. I had it for 2 hours, the Sigma outclasses the tamron in terms of everything to the point where I sold tamron while at the store and pre ordered the sigma (should be here soon as just released). The lens is cherry as hell. And I live in Montana and love ultra light and ultraportable setups, the weight difference was a little heavier maybe 200-250g but still reasonable and the quality was holy shit. I typically take an ultra wide for landscapes 24mm gm, and the tamron 28-75 and it barely just barely works with my ronin sc so I can still film with it.
@@oguzbenice7423 you cannot carry a lens that weighs less then the pair of boots you're wearing? You should probably stay away from full frame cameras and stick to point and shoot. Full frame cameras are pretty heavy.
Great review as always! I am in the market to buy a standard zoom for my sony... the only option within my budget is the Tamron and this Sigma. I have seen a lot of people facing this issue with dust (just after a month or two). I really wanted to buy the Sigma but after reading those I want to go for Tamron. I guess you have used Sigma for a while, if so could you please post a picture of the front element or share your overall experience? Thanks!
Hi Christopher. I am confused about buying Sigma 17-50mm OS f2.8 and Sigma 18-200mm f3.5-6.3. On one hand, I know image quality in Sigma 17-50 is much higher , on the other hand, higher focal length in 18-200 is very tempting. I am a beginner and hobbyist and I photograph everything ( portrait, buildings, streets and landscape). I would appreciate if you let me know about your choice.
Great work Mr. Frost. Sorry if this has already been covered/answered but I have a question. Going by image quality and rendering alone, which one would you say is the best between this and the Sony 24-105? Excluding weight, reach and aperture. I will use an A7R3 and the only lens I've decided on so far is the new Tamron 70-180. I mainly do travel/landscape photography. Would appreciate your opinion, cheers.
Greetings Christopher. My name is Nathaniel. I've been anticipating your lens reviews and this one was one of my hotly anticipated evaluation. Great assessment as expected. Thank you so much! I saw your comprehensive assessment of Sony's FF 35mm 1.8 and it's one of those great and trusted reviews regarding the product. I do have further inquiries though: 1. I've yet to decide whether to invest in the Sony Mirrorless system (or Canon's, Nikon's, or Fuji's). But should I take the plunge, what would be the ideal Sony lenses line up if I preferred to shoot portraits, street and landscape/architectural photography? My choices are: a. GM 24 1.4, Sigma's 24-70 2.8 b. FE 35 1.8, FE 85 1.8, Sigma 24-70 2.8 c. GM 24 1.4, FE 55 1.8 d. GM 24 1.4, FE 85 1.8 I love prime lenses. But in harsh conditions where changing lenses would render dust inhibition (a weakness of Sony's as informed by reviewers), maybe you yourself would advise me to have a standard zoom (of which I'm just worried that I may not use that much). I do note that you weren't in favor of the FE 35mm 1.8. But somehow, another reviewer thinks it's something worth considering (Dustin Abbot's Reviews: Part 1: ruclips.net/video/3XXQNNsEK9U/видео.html ; Part 2 Review: ruclips.net/video/GHU7Vvx1Tkc/видео.html) 2. Also, if you were to choose, would the Tamron 28-75 2.8 be a wise option over the Sigma 24-70 2.8 (with reference to both your reviews of both lenses)? Thank you for your time. Sorry for the multiple questions. I just want to be certain on my investment because it's going to be long term.
It all depends on what set up you want exactly. My own personal preference would be to get the Sony 24-105 f/4, and the Zeiss 55mm f/1.8. It really is up to you and your needs
Thank you@@christopherfrost . Your reviews are always highly anticipated by yours truly. You make excellent reviews. Keep it up. A joyous and CHRIST-centric Christmas to you and your family. :)
@Christopher Frost Photography Thank you for your review, but could you please ad in your test with Sony cameras "The barrel distortion picture with camera correction "ON"" at least in the widest focal length, because barrel distortion correction works great with native Sony lenses but doesn't work properly with third party lenses. This is absolutely essential for video shooters, because it is hard or even impossible to correct it in post.
Great ! Ive see some people to say that this lens came dusty from inside very easy and fast,is it true?? Is the only think that makes me think it twice before i buy one!
Nice review, as always, Christopher. What’s your assessment of zooming during video? I just purchased the 24-105 and its zoom ring is so stiff and jerky as to make it unusable for video.
The best channel when it comes to reviews. I was thinking if Tamaron but I guess I would go in for Sigma. So far the only focal lens I have is 70-200 f4
Thank you for your awesome review as always. How did you find the overall characteristics of the image? I bought the tamron equivalent a while ago but returned it after a week or so because it was just so 'boring'. Hard to explain but the bokeh wasn't pretty, the flares weren't pretty. It was just somehow "digital". Definitely suitable for someone but I didn't like it and returned to my vintage manual lenses. If you somewhat get what I mean maybe you can chime in about the Sigma?
I personally like it. Its hard to explain. Some people on here don't seem to like this lens's bokeh, but I did - all my sample pictures looked nice to me :-)
Hey Chris. Thanks for the great review. I am planning to buy Sony a7iii and as I am more of a videographer than a photographer, can you tell me how this lens will perform in video ? And I want a fast zoom lens. I don't have the budget for the Sony 24-70. So I have only two options, either tamron's 28-75 2.8 or Sigma's 24-70 2.8. Which one will be better for video ?
Thank you for the review! I want to buy this lens but I heard it has problems with dust. Some users have reported that after two weeks of use a noticeable amount of dust is trap inside the lens. Is this actually true?
Chris, I just bought the Tamron 28-75, and after watching this video, I'm thinking of returning it (return window closes on the 28th of February) and purchasing the Sigma as it seems to be a bit better. Would you recommend the switch? Merry Christmas!
Thanks for this Chris. I'm an event photographer and often shoot in low light. I'm looking at the sigma or the gmaster and am trying to figure out if the sigma would be able to keep up with focus and wouldn't hunt too much. Any thoughts? Many thanks

wow, im seeing this lens is sharper in terms of sharpness vs sony 24-70/2.8GM, isnt it right? are you doing some lens comparison soon?(sony vs sigma vs tamron)
@@christopherfrost thx for the replay, i think its better choice than the sony GM for 1/2 the price then, because i think my 24-70/2.8GM almost the same in term of sharpness as my sony 24-105/4G. And my Sony 24-105/4G had the same sharpness as my old Canon 24-105/4L more or less. What do you think the sharpest zoom lens available now? Is it Canon 24-70/2.8L ii?

isn't it constant aperture f 2.8 throughout the zoom range .....
Yes
It really depends on what you are shooting and what you want to be in focus.
now i know this lens will work on my a6000, thanks for this video
i have watched this review to know its performance on sony a6000.
Is it right, that if i use the sigma 24-70 on a apsc camera, it will be a 36-105mm because of the crop of 1,5x ?
Appreciate your reviews as they seem to be very honest
Finally I've been waiting for so long! Thank you!
Yeah, so nice

Looks like an awesome lens. I’d easily get this over the Sony G master
Holy cow, that is quite a strange book selection you've got there 3:10
Pretty normal kind of stuff for someone who's a vicar
Thank you for an excellent review! I don't see any point in spending twice as much for a Sony lens after watching this!
Christopher, thanks for another excellent lens review. Merry Christmas to you and your family. Jay
Oguz Benice let me guess, you own a tamron ?
@@lukacalipso9409 Absolutely, but I also own heavy lenses I cannot use when hiking
@@glitchlife4639 I cannot carry a 850gr lens while hiking. İf you can, good for you.
Thanks!
Thanks again for the great work. Looking forward to see a test of the sharpness on a Canon r7
I don't see this on amazon US yet
Oh man you got your hands on this im so jelly
Great video. Looking forward to purchasing the lens.
Hi Chris
Thanks for your awesome work. Great review, as always.
Have a Happy New Year start!
Thanks for the awesome review and Merry Christmas!
Yesssss I've been waiting for this review
Will be the FE Mount best seller. The only downside will be the T-Stop value, as for all the other Sigma lenses.
I do have further inquiries though:
1. I've yet to decide whether to invest in the Sony Mirrorless system (or Canon's, Nikon's, or Fuji's). But should I take the plunge, what would be the ideal Sony lenses line up if I preferred to shoot portraits, street and landscape/architectural photography? My choices are:
a. GM 24 1.4, Sigma's 24-70 2.8
b. FE 35 1.8, FE 85 1.8, Sigma 24-70 2.8
c. GM 24 1.4, FE 55 1.8
d. GM 24 1.4, FE 85 1.8
I love prime lenses. But somehow, another reviewer thinks it's something worth considering (Dustin Abbot's Reviews: Part 1: ruclips.net/video/3XXQNNsEK9U/видео.html ; Part 2 Review: ruclips.net/video/GHU7Vvx1Tkc/видео.html)
Hope to see reviews on the sigma 24-105 and sony 24-70G thank you
Well done. Very thoughtful and informative review.
BTW why don't you leave amazon or B&H affiliate link, so people could buy reviewed product in order to support your channel?
Great ! Ive see some people to say that this lens came dusty from inside very easy and fast,is it true??
Is the only think that makes me think it twice before i buy one!
I've seen that too. It's a dust pumper, unfortunately.
Nice review, as always, Christopher. What’s your assessment of zooming during video? I just purchased the 24-105 and its zoom ring is so stiff and jerky as to make it unusable for video.
It seemed very nice on this lens
This is awesome, thank you so much, Christopher!
The best channel when it comes to reviews. I was thinking if Tamaron but I guess I would go in for Sigma. So far the only focal lens I have is 70-200 f4
Does distortion and vignetting even matter When they can be corrected in post with a single button? 😊
Both lenses should be fine for video, as you can see in this review. Watch the review, and you'll see.
Nice Video 👍🏻 Is the lens suitable for Sony6400
To be honest ,compared to the 14-24mm i expected this lense to do a tad bit better thant it actually does. Thank you for reviewing.
It's much harder to design a 24-70 f/2.8 - remember, the zoom range of the 14-24 isn't that big, which would have made it easier to design
To be honest, the Sigma 14-24mm is kind of a 'state of emergency', hardly to beat
I like those sheep, very cute, merry christmas
Thank you for the review! I want to buy this lens but I heard it has problems with dust. Some users have reported that after two weeks of use a noticeable amount of dust is trap inside the lens. Is this actually true?
Can you share some tips on how one can test a lens at home. I just purchased this lens and want to make sure I didn’t get a bad copy. Thanks
Chris, I just bought the Tamron 28-75, and after watching this video, I'm thinking of returning it (return window closes on the 28th of February) and purchasing the Sigma as it seems to be a bit better. Would you recommend the switch?
Merry Christmas!
Raül Gullón i would!
It's up to you! As I say at the end, the Sigma is the better lens, really, but it costs more.
I’m trying to make this same decision right now :(
Christopher Frost Photography if you had to choose between the tamron or the sigma which one would you get?
@@DEXTVHD As I said, the sigma is better, but it costs more
Off topic but man, your color grading is awesome. Do you have any tutorials?
Not really, just learned as I went along
You describe the Sigma as being sharper in the center. How much of a difference are you seeing in the center?
A gut-punch to Sony and their lens-prices.
Are you going to a vid on Tamron 17-28 and Sony 16-35 2.8?
Eventually I will test those lenses
Thank you very much for your channel. This is amazing work.
Thanks for this Chris. I'm an event photographer and often shoot in low light. I'm looking at the sigma or the gmaster and am trying to figure out if the sigma would be able to keep up with focus and wouldn't hunt too much. Any thoughts? Many thanks
Will you be reviewing the new Viltrox primes for Fuji X and/or Sony E once they release?
Yes, hopefully. I think they're still working on them
@@christopherfrost Yes i heard they're slightly delayed to Q1 of next year. Awesome though, thanks!
The closest rock and 1:13, 70MM straight up looks like a dinosaur.
Carreg Bica, the large rock between Llangrannog and Cilborth Beaches is well known and features in many local photographs. According to legend Carreg Bica is the tooth of the giant Bica who lived in the Ceredigion area, and was forced to spit his tooth onto the beach following a bad toothache.
Tolkien couldn't have said it better himself.
wow, im seeing this lens is sharper in terms of sharpness vs sony 24-70/2.8GM, isnt it right? are you doing some lens comparison soon?(sony vs sigma vs tamron)
From the reviews I've watched, I reckon this lens is just as sharp as the Sony, but without having tested it, I can't say for sure.
