Very nice review, i mostly take photos, not videos, i use a7 r 4 and confused between sigma and tamron. Kindly help me because people have confused me with terms like resolving power etc. Thanks in advance
Ha! Obviously someone’s a lens goblin. Hoarding them for science! Great review. I ordered mine 2 weeks ago. Should be arriving sometime before new year. Replacing my tamron actually. The weather sealing is important to me.
I love Gerald’s manner of rapid recitation. I never have felt the need to fast-forward his vids. Also like how he goes silent during focus demonstrations, allowing a moment to consider the test. A nice accent and appreciated. Excellence! 💛🙏🏼
@Alexander Brazda Lorente if it's possible, I would. I like my Tamron, but I would have dropped the extra $200 for the Sigma. Again, I like my Tamron and good with my decision.
@Alexander Brazda Lorente depends on the type of work you're doing. Event/travel/hoby photography? I'd keep the Tamron. Studio/commercial photography? Need the extra room in the wide end? I'd buy the Sigma. Realistically no client will ever notice a difference.
Sorry, but I betcha Sony has something to say about that. Food for thought! If you want to build lenses for e mount; I would likely have a clause dictating a difference in manipulation of the lens. (Not that I am smart enough to come up with this idea on my own...) This might ensures Sony lenses to have an upper hand no matter what the Quality of the lens turns out to be. Which was the exact reason why I was turned off by the Tamron and which is the exact reason why I will be turned off by the Sigma. And likely settle for the 24-105 for an all around lens. After all sigma will likely have 3.3-3.5 t stop anyway.
Zoom direction follows a certain pattern: Canon, Olympus, Sigma FF zooms all zoom in when turning counterclockwise; Nikon, Sony, Fuji, Panasonic, Tamron, Sigma aps-c zooms all zoom in when turning clockwise. Focus direction is all over the place. Zoom/focus ring location is all over the place.
Great review and comparison! It would be great to do a similar comparison on the popular wider e-mount glass like the Tamron 17-28, Sony 16-35 GM and the Sigma 14-24
Loved the review! This format should be the industry standard for a lens review. Almost never I want to spend 40 minutes zooming on images to analyze sharpness on various f-stops. Well, now that I think about it, I would spend 40 minutes listening to you reviewing stuff, so thank you for coming up with this format! =) I guess I'm selling my Tamron for the Sigma... Even though it's pretty much just a backup lens and I love the weight and extra reach, I deeply hate the non-linear focus ring.
Gerardo Molina this review confirmed that I’d keep my tamron. However Dustin’s videos are absolutely critical before I drop big coin on lenses. These short practical and sweet reviews get me interested and mentally prepared for Dustin’s videos.

I don't mind it if I do studio shoot or some other shoots when im really prepared and I have my lights and all that with me, but when I'm traveling, I find tamrons weight extremely attactive. In fact, when I leave for a trip I only take the tamron with me all the time. - the price difference might be bigger between the sigma and the tamron, I'm living in europe and here are a lot of people selling the tamron online. This is easily the best lens comparison I've ever seen, test explanation and conclusion are to the point and well balanced. The colors and your presentations are visual treats to my eyes and I could see there is a lot of preparation going behind the scene. Thank you for your honest options, happy holiday!! ❤️
Unreal how good this review was! I just got the Tamron on Black Friday and I am very happy with it. The only issue I have with it is that the manual focus is not linear, but overall, a very nice lens!
Dude you are the absolute best option right now on RUclips, regarding camera education. Thank you for all the work you put into. Always on point. I wish all the best
I'm so deeply in love with this channel! The way you present a lens in a technically accurate and informative way, and then, out of absolutely nowhere, the "you can always fix that in post" distortion appears... Man, it's pure bliss
I'm on my 2nd copy of this Sigma lens, and both have had bad dust intrusion. The first lens had two large dust particles visible beyond the front element before it was ever used outside; it was toyed with indoors and then kept in the camera bag. Second lens has dust inside as well now, despite it being said that the seal was improved. I understand dust intrusion for extending barrel lenses, but this is pretty poor performance. Image wise, the lens is good, but I regret not immediately going with the Sony lens.
I felt like one of just a very few people who wasn't enamored with the 28-75 (probably made worse by the fact I use a GM at work.) The MF ring and blocky bokeh just ruined that lens for me (though I do love the 17-28.) This just seems like an absolute perfect compromise: it seems like they took the Tamron philosophy of "smaller and cheaper" than the GM, but without crossing into that grey area of "Okay, this just feels like too many compromises." Good focus ring, good build, good price, full 24-70 range, weather sealing, fantastic MFD? I'm sold.
The Tamron has the advantage of being lighter and smaller with good Image Quality for a affordable price. Also if you buy any other Tamron lense the filter thread remains the same (67cm I believe). So for instance buying the 17-28 and 28-75 you pay roughly around 1800 bucks. The Sigma does have better image quality yet the filter thread is not the same. The 14-24 needs a special filter. And in the end the total price is somewhere around 2400 bucks. The Sony Gmaster might be the best regarding autofocus and IQ. But for the 16-35 and 24-70 in total it adds up to almost 4500 bucks! In the end it is all about what YOU can afford and prefer. For me I stay with the Tamron lenses because I like to keep my bag as light as possible and I do not want to bring extra ND filters. Great video again Gerald! Going to do a comparison video too
Gary Jahman very good points 🙂 One thing that keeps me completely away from the tamron, is that with those lenses I have no way to get 24 and 35mm in one lens, very time that I need to switch between those focal length I have to switch lenses.
@@GaryJahman I didn't get any of it yet, because a focal range of 24-70 isn't really interesting to me. It was more about if I get the 16-35 f/4 or wait for the Tamron, but when they anounced that it's only a 17-28 it was a pretty easy choice for me to got with the 16-35, allthough it's just an f/4. Should I be shooting more events in the future for whatever reason I will consider the Sigma though because I find those extra 4mm to be important. When I was using the 28-70 Kit lens I often felt, that the 28mm is just not wide enough.
Just picked up the 24-70 for my fx3 and was a bit concerned with the visible barrel distortion at 24-35mm but seeing your results made me feel better that it’s common even with the G master. The wider field of view makes up for the lost 1-2mm with distortion correction turned on and my lines are super straight now! Cheers Gerald!
This is how a comparison video should be. Full of facts and useable information. None of the screaming at the camera and flashy stuff. Short simple and straightforward. 👏 for me the sigma is the clear winner as it seems like the jack of all trade.
Great video. But Gerald forgot one thing: Dust protection. The front of the sigma is made of a material which pulls a lot of dust in time. This problem does not exist with the Sony lense. Hence I went for Sony instead of sigma.
I watch a lot of these videos and your content by far has been the most informative than most RUclipsrs. Keep up the great work! Looking forward to more videos.
Years ago Tamron and Sigma were on par for battling for the budget lens market. But Sigma have really stepped up their game and compete for IQ vs the best lens out there while delivering at prices to appeal to the budget minded markets. Tamron is really just a good budget lens company now, but for what its worth for anyone these days, you can't go wrong with Sigma lens.
Just taking a minute to compliment your work. Your videos are well thought out, informative, lit well, nice grading, nice b roll; you deserve the success you’re undoubtedly enjoying. Thanks for your hard work. A lot goes into making these “short” videos and the effort doesn’t go unnoticed.
This channel is so underated. This is the only reviewer I come to when I’m about to make a big expensive purchase. Thanks a lot, I hope you get the millions of subscribers you truly deserve.
I guess I’m getting used to watching your videos now and am evolving as a result. I can now play back your videos at 1.5x speed and still understand. I feel very proud of that fact. Thanks for pushing my ability to comprehend blazing fast dialog about technical camera details to a new limit!
How is it that I’ve been debating on which 24-70mm to get and just a few minutes ago I said I need to know which one would suit me best! Then you bless me with this video 👏🏼 thank you sir.
I was planning on filming my comparison of these three lenses tomorrow. Now, in my video, I'll just reference to your video, link in the description. 😂😭😭😭 The end. Of course fantastic comparison. The best.
Useful video! Always used Sigma on Nikon and tempted now I've switched to Sony The price difference is a bit more dramatic in the UK, Tamron ~£650, Sigma ~£1050 and Sony ~£1800, so the Tamron is pretty tempting in that respect!
Really appreciated the chromatic aberration & Bokeh comparison - Sigma killing it with the lack of CA... huge areas of importance for Image rendering & Sigma besting the GM will put it ahead for most filmmakers - let alone the close focus etc.. Awesome comparison Gerald - Only thing that could enhance this is an additional outdoor portrait / bokeh / CA comparison to show a real world example in addition to your excellent studio ones!
There are no bad lenses out there today! It was an an ambition to get the G Master, the review conforms the cheaper Tamron is adequate enough! Fantastic job GU! A Merry XMas and Good light for the new year!
You have established a next level in camera gear reviews, and mankind will keep thanking you for all the hard work for years to come. Big fan, keep it up and keep it coming. Cheers!
Those comparisons were amazing, quick, detailed, and straightforward. I'm positive the the video or the comparison were quick to make so I really appreciate the work put in, thank you.
I've had the Tamron for, I guess, about a year now and I use it for stills. I absolutely love it for portraiture. So, if you're a photographer, and after watching this video feel like you don't have a good lens, don't let your gear acquisition syndrome get the best of you. The Tamron is a solid performer. In the prime lens category though the Sigma Art is my jam.
Since it hasn't been clearly pointed out in comments, the weird jitter from the Sigma 24-70mm has been totally fixed by a firmware update from feb/20. All future lenses from that point come without that issue, and all lenses purchased before just need to be updated.
At 10:35 the Sigma clearly produced the best bokeh, What surprised me is that the Tamron produced better bokeh results than the G Master, which I wouldn't have imagined. Great review... short, sweet and to the point. Subscribed.
I know this video is a few years old but this is EXACTLY the comparison i was looking for as i am getting into the sony ecosystem and the standard zoom range will be my first lens purchase. Well done and thank you.
What an awesome review Gerald. Pretty much covered all aspects most of us wanted to know about. The comparisons were fantastic. I look forward to getting my Sigma 24-70 2.8! First time I actually will have a standard zoom as I always been more of a prime shooter when I was with Nikon!
As always you leave other reviewers in the dust....awesome and informative. Keep up the good work and keep'em flying...I like your backdrop, very pleasing to view and not distracting from your subject matter.
In August 2021Tamron announced an improved version of their lens would be available before the end of the year. I hope you will get an opportunity to review that because it may alter the relative merits and demerits ofthe different lenses and I am holding off my purchase now until I can see whether the new lens is better value.
In UK the sigma it's 1050pound, the tamron I can get it for 550£, for double the price it's hard to justify the sigma..I might go with the Tamron and with the spare money get a FE 35 1.8
Well, I absolutely love my Sigma 14-24 on the A7RIII. I have the 24-70 GM which does a great job, but, I mainly shoot landscapes, so I can take my time with still objects. Once they iron out the issue with the Sigma, if I did not have the GM, I would not hesitate to purchase the Sigma 24-70mm.
Fantastic overview, subjective but clear opinion (appreciated), and great structure/tests. Couldn't find a better video on lens comparisons than from Undone 👌
I love my Tamron.. money well saved. Truth be told I would probably say the same thing about any of the other two if I got them instead. But I’m happy with it none the less.
When I searched up the review for this lens. so happy to see your review came up and I was not disappoint. always love your contents with so much useful info. thanks. Great work.
I have the Tamron and I love it. My son is my second shooter now so I was thinking of getting another, but now I am leaning heavily on getting the Sigma. Great review :-)
I'm an old geezer, and must have all my lenses zoom same direction. You young smart togs can handle the inconsistencies better than I. Good luck with that. Thanks for the comparison Jerald. I look forward to seeing another comparison in the real world where bokeh is judged by more than just the shape of out of focus specular highlights. And I must say, the neutral colors of the GMaster not only match my other GM and ZA lenses, but are also much cleaner on skin tones (similar to Canon color) and less hyper saturated on greens and yellows. Cooler toned lenses are always a better match for high end glass like Otus and Leica which never tint warm. Would be interested to know if the Sig and Tammy keep their exposure value consistency throughout the zoom range as well as the GM does.
CTphotographX Clyde I am with you fully. If I may ask your personality. I own the 16-35 GM and an 85 1.4GM 50 1.4 Zeiss and 70-200 GM. I’m missing a standard zoom in my arsenal. I’m leaning towards the 24-105 g lens. Just for versatility. Tho it is an f4. Or do I have to goto the gm?????
@@kasterchoi7952 The 24-105/4 satisfies most, for most things, and should be good choice since you have the 50ZA. My problem with it was the extreme fly-wire focus acceleration, and so instead I got a used 28-135/4 G Power Zoom which turned out to be my favorite combined with the 50ZA and the others you mention. I use it a lot for both stills and video. Handles great and shoots sharp enough for 24mp a9. But it's a huge lens and I shoot jobs with. For every day use I got the GM-24-70 and enjoy the extra f2.8. For walk around, I just use a6600 with 16-70/4 ZA. You've got a pretty safe bet with the 24-105/4 since you have the 50ZA. Depends on how much you need manual focus. Sharpness at 105/4 is good nice, but not on the level of your 85/1.4 or 70200GM at 100mm. I found myself never using the 24105 at 105 because it paled in comparison to what I already had, so the extra zoom range wasn't needed, and it distorts pretty bold at 24. I like the GM2470 better all around.
Great video. Easily the best of the videos regarding this topic. And thank you for clarifying what currency you are using when talking prices. Very important for audiences outside of USA.
Wow man. Really cant believe you only have 228k subs. I thought for sure you had at least a million. Production is phenomenal. Information is exactly what we ask for and I was actually entertained as well. Not sure why but I just waned to listen. Hope you get to one mill soon :)
Great review. I still don't regret purchasing the Tammy earlier this year. I almost exclusively shoot stills, so video performance is not an issue for me. Had I not purchased it before the Sigma came out, it may be a different ballgame, but I'm not interested enough to sell the Tammy at a loss and pay the difference for the Sigma. If I need 24mm I have the 24 1.4 GM, so I'm cool with the Tammy starting at 28. The issue with the focus and zoom rings being reversed are a strange situation for me, I guess. I shot the Sony 70-300G lens for long time, and that lens' zoom and focus rings are actually "reversed," like the Tamron's so the muscle memory was already there for me. If anything, it was harder for me to get used to the 100-400GM's configuration when I upgraded.
I own the Tamron 28-75, and have been eyeballing the new Sigma. Your video just might make my wife mad. However, I do own the Tamron 17-28 and am planning on purchasing the Tamron 70-180. And as you mentioned, the muscle memory switch between the rings is gonna be a pain in the arse, so maybe my wife won't be mad after all. Gerald, seriously mad, your videos rock! It's no wonder you're fast becoming (and in my opinion, you already are) the best gear reviewer out there.
Thank you for this review, you hit on the things I had questions on. The 24mm being at least as wide as 24mm is important and so is the close focusing abilities. Curious to see what the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 will be like when it comes out.
Hey Gerald, amazing review! Did the "choppy" focus when you left the frame (8:28 in your video) get fixed with the firmware update that fixed the lens distortion compensation bug? Looks like it could have been related?
Very nice comparison. Love the sony glass but for the price you can't beat Sigma. I've been a fan of Sigma for a while now and own the Sigma 14-28 2.8 for my Sony Camera which is a great lens.
Thank you so much Gerald for the informative review! Very helpful and I learnt a lot from your video and now better I can decide to buy which one for my need! Good luck and stay always healthy and happy!
It's really interesting to see how much Sigma has changed in recent years. Back when I started in photography in the 70s, Sigma were very much seen as the poor man's alternative. They made interesting lenses with unique features but were never very good optically. Tamron were always the best value third party lenses for quality and price, and seem to have remained that way, and have always been my choice as a cash-strapped photographer. Now I need to overcome my prejudice and maybe have a look at Sigma as an alternative.
thanks for the effort and sharing, 1.5yr later, who is still picking the sigma art 24-70? and that's not being concerned about a rumored dust problem? thumbs up.
There is now a firmware update to fix that distortion compensation bug with the Sigma 24-70. 🤓🙌

@Gerald Undone: Do we need a USB dock to update the firmware?
You should receive some kind of bounty ;)
The image jumps (
on the angles at the light level) at 8:00 have disappeared since the update ? Thx for your work !
Have you been able to try the sigma 24-70 now that it was updated? Does it get rid of that weird stepped thing happening during the test at 8:00?
Got told by Sigma they didn’t have any available for demo. What they actually meant was, Gerald has them all 😉
Because he promised to buy one of them, ha,ha!

THIS IS WHAT WE ALL NEED. the comparison between GM and Tamron. very in depth indeed. thx gerald
Thank you Gerald. This is a really great video. You don't miss anything. I love how through you go with your reviews. Thanks again.
Great video. But Gerald forgot one thing: Dust protection. The front of the sigma is made of a material which pulls a lot of dust in time. This problem does not exist with the Sony lense. Hence I went for Sony instead of sigma.
For photography videos about technical things, no one does it better than this channel. Good job man.
I watch a lot of these videos and your content by far has been the most informative than most RUclipsrs. Keep up the great work! Looking forward to more videos.
08:08 - that af testing bit looks something out of a film that Wes Anderson shot and edited when he was high.
I love having a question for youtube and then seeing a Gerald Undone video pop up in the results!!!
The best.
Vu Nguyen // nVu Films Bro, you could make a video about disposable cameras and it's worth watching anyway 🤣 ... Deez Nuts video killed me.
@@edwinmoralestirado7679 lol thanks bro
You've been Undone!
@@JamesClark1991 good one
That's happened to me many times... Working on a video and then someone does an in-depth. Nothing wrong with linking..
Just picked up the Sigma. It was on sale $1249 Canadian. The best value standard zoom lens. Thank you Gerald.
Does it compare well to the GM....why is the GM twice the price?
Useful video! Always used Sigma on Nikon and tempted now I've switched to Sony
The price difference is a bit more dramatic in the UK, Tamron ~£650, Sigma ~£1050 and Sony ~£1800, so the Tamron is pretty tempting in that respect!
Cheers!
Thanks for going into depth on autofocus. Other reviews seemed to hardly mention it. Your thoroughness is always appreciated.
Those comparisons were amazing, quick, detailed, and straightforward. I'm positive the the video or the comparison were quick to make so I really appreciate the work put in, thank you.
The new haircut looks great. Oh yeah, thanks for the detail in this one, 24-70mm purchases are often our most important
Flawless timing - just got my a7iii and this is exactly what I was looking for - I have huge faith in sigma art quality
very straight to the point... no fancy editing and background music. thanks Gerald
@8:24 camera conspiracies is gonna have fun with this! Lol
'What we're you thinking Sigma? You piece of s**t. Hoping I wouldn't notice? I'm disappointed in you. Damn you Sigma, damn you! `
Best comparison I’ve seen so far. Thank you.
Just ordered the Sigma like an hour before watching this video. Im stoked! 😁😁😁
Well done and thank you.
why have i only found this channel now? the best review i've seen...possibly ever!
Sigma FTW
That backlit face-at-the camera test was phenomenal. Great conception. Thank you.
You offer the best reviews of anyone on RUclips.
Very informative, comprehensive, and straight to the point...
Excellent review Gerald 👍
I love my Tamron.. money well saved. Truth be told I would probably say the same thing about any of the other two if I got them instead. But I’m happy with it none the less.
When I searched up the review for this lens. so happy to see your review came up and I was not disappoint. always love your contents with so much useful info. thanks. Great work.
I have the Tamron and I love it. My son is my second shooter now so I was thinking of getting another, but now I am leaning heavily on getting the Sigma. Great review :-)
Nearly 13-minutes and didn't skip a beat, great review!
CTphotographX Clyde decisions decisions.. great points. Tx a bunch!
Great video. Easily the best of the videos regarding this topic. And thank you for clarifying what currency you are using when talking prices. Very important for audiences outside of USA.
Great review, Gerald, as always! Thanks for your dedication!
Fantastic video, Gerald. Very in depth and perfect for those on the fence about which lens to get. Made my choice!
Wow man. Really cant believe you only have 228k subs. I thought for sure you had at least a million. Production is phenomenal. Information is exactly what we ask for and I was actually entertained as well. Not sure why but I just waned to listen. Hope you get to one mill soon :)
One of the most thorough reviews I have ever seen, very helpful, thank you!
Incredible comparison! Thank you Gerald. Love the detail and clarity of demonstrations.
Main features that matter to a photographer tackled swiftly in a smart way. Excellent , thanks!
Been waiting for someone to do this exact video. Thanks Gerald! Great info!
Thanks so much! Means a lot.
Such a great comparison. And my mind was blown by how great the sigma handled the chromatic aberration!
Best lens comparison review I've watched. Had everything I wanted, and also compared the lenses I've all been interested in.
Very informative. Ordered through your link. Thank you 🙏
Thank you for this review, you hit on the things I had questions on.
Gerald, you've got it Buddy. Your presentation has the other guys beat
by a mile.
This looks like the standard zoom to get for E-Mount now. Great job Sigma!
Gm looks less contrasty on skin tones which I find more pleasing. Thanks for the review. Great job as usual.
I really just want to give you a hug for this video! you're amazing, makes me want to cry. thank you soooo much!
Which did you end up going with?
One of the top comparison reviews I've seen! I was about to get the Tamron, but the bad manual focus and lack of features were deal breakers.
Tamrons interchangeable mount was their weak spot. Had some good lenses.
very impressed by your progress in production value, articulation, and knowledge...just wow !!
The review I’ve been waiting for. Thank you, Gerald!
thanks for the effort and sharing, 1.5yr later, who is still picking the sigma art 24-70? and that's not being concerned about a rumored dust problem? thumbs up.
Best review of these three lenses I’ve seen yet!
Thank you the excellent video. Your review was detailed, thorough, and I appreciate the effort you took to create it. Well done as usual!
