Such a useful comparison! This might seem like a weird detail to fixate on, but I am honestly astounded that Sony isn't including the lens breathing correction on the A1 (as a $6500 USD flagship) and the A7S iii and FX3 (as $4500 video-first cameras). It shouldn't be an incredibly tall order to include software corrections to visual defects that ship with the lenses THEY produce. It's not like we are asking for the kitchen sink here, they're first party lenses!
Sony wants you to buy the A7S IV and the FX3 Mark II. They are VERY bad with giving features via firmware updates. Even worse than Canon! The C70 got RAW support for example.
I opted for the Sigma 2 years ago and have been happy with the image quality. But I've had to spend about $800 sending the lens back twice over these two years between repair fees and having to rent lenses in its place due to the dust issue you mentioned. $800 over 2 years isn't bad, but I do wish Sigma admitted this issue and did a free manufacturer recall rather than making me pay for their mistake. That leaves a bad taste in my mouth regarding my opinion of Sigma as a company.
@@enjoygary it absolutely should not be. And it's been fine since the last time I sent it in. So I believe Gerald is correct in saying that some Sigma 24-70 lenses have that problem and some don't. And that also tells me that Sigma is aware of the issue. Now did they just silently create a 24-70 mkii? Are they intentionally banking off of people that they know have a faulty lens by forcing them to pay for repairs? I brought this issue up with Sigma, they basically said that they will consider my complaint and reduce the cost of the repair but I don't think they did. And I needed my lens back so I just paid it anyways.
@@jettlifeproductions Yes I looked into this before buying a 24-70 Sigma last year. The dust is / was, coming in through the zoom mechanism , an inherent problem for this design in all lenses ,BUT it seems the early runs actually had seals that were "too good" and created more a a vacuum cleaner effect , actually drawing in tiny dust particles and so defeating the whole idea . They now will change the seals , and in some locations they were doing it for free , as an unofficial recall but it seemed totally random. As you mention , the problem was never recognized by Sigma , and thats where they have screwed up with their customer base, personally I think its down to some loss of face thing in Japan. Sony did the same with the f5/55 infamous purple grid on the sensor problem , Sony in the UK / US where changing out an un blackened part that caused this effect ,for free , but in Japan they totally refused to even recognize it as not only a problem , but even that it existed or that they were being replaced overseas for free. Mine bought last year has not had any dust problem so far. Admitting fault, it seems ,is just not part of Sigma HQ,s corporate policy ..
The new sigma E 24-70 doesn’t have dust issues. I forget what serial number it needs to be above but I haven’t had any issues with my copy. I bought it 8 months ago
Thanks Gerald for your honest, no nonsense review! I had the original 24-70, and didn't find it to be that bad...although its images were clinical to my eyes. Having the Tamron 35-150 now, I'll never go back to a 24-70. While I do miss having a wider focal with the zoom, the Sony 20mm G compliments very nicely. (So the extra weight of the Tamron is offset in my bag.)
Think I will get the Sigma. I was waiting for the gm ii to see what it had, but doesn’t appear to be that much of a difference for me to pay the extra to buy the gm ii. Thanks for doing the comparison, as well as reviewing the new lens.
i currently dont own any cameras and want to get into photography. i spend hours every day sorting through youtube and all information on which cameras and lenses to buy. you make it so much easier and put my mind at ease. thank you for your content.
That was a surprise! I am still using the GM1 and I guess I will stick to it. I guess I will stick to it till the time they bring out a lens that does not change dimensions when I zoomed. That will be a game changer especially for using on a gimbal.
I just purchased the Sigma a couple of weeks ago and love almost everything about it, so I don't feel bad about missing out. Yeah, I would love the new GM and I am sure it's great, but I am definitely in value-mode these days so thanks for the (as-usual) great review.
Another beautifully clear, friendly and honest review. Always a pleasure to watch and listen. There's even a certain soothing quality to the calm and friendly way you present these videos that makes me watch them as bedtime "reading". I own the Sigma since last summer, used it for a wedding and lots of street photography. Except for some minor sharpness issues in the most extreme regimes wide open I love everything about it. It's fast and beautiful for a very reasonable price.
I'm surprised you didn't talk about distortion. I always preferred my 24-70 GM I over the Sigma because of the barrel/pin-cushion distortion that the Sigma has.

Thanks for another amazing review, Gerald! I bought the Sigma a few months ago and absolutely love it. The price difference is significant so I am quite happy with my purchase
Great review straight to the point. I upgraded from the sigma 24-70 2.8 to the new sony 24-70 2.8 gm ii primarily due to a few reasons: AF consistency/accuracy/speed, weight, corner sharpness, weather sealing (I didnt have dust issues with the sigma) and overall controls and package. No it's not really worth twice the price of the sigma but the overall package you get with the new sony is pretty nice. I'd say the sigma might be a bit less prone to flare shooting into the sun but the sony does a great job as well. The price of the sigma is so compelling that I might actually buy another one as I really loved the rendering of that lens even though I have the new GM II. Also I will say the new GM II lens has better micro contrast than the sigma but I'd say for about 90% of shooters the sigma just wins due to the value ratio alone and it will be more than enough.
The dust issue on the Sigma is no longer a problem with newer models. I love mine, great value. Call Sigma for yourself and get the serial number and ask what they did to fix the problem, if it eases your mind.
I’m very happy with Sigma - used them on my canon before and as someone who is not having a full time job / income dependent on videography / photography: An excellent choice. Seems to also be one of the few camera related companies out there that have somewhat of a soul and take great pride in their engineering for the price.
I am not in the market for one of these lenses at all, but boy do I like your reviews. Enough to watch them just for the info on the topic and how you look at things.
There is one use for this lens in sports - dance, when you are right on the edge of the scene. I have been using 24-105mm for that and F4 is not as big a problem as a tight zoom ring is, so the ability to control this would be great.
Still feel sigma is the best for the majority of users, 2300 is steep. Looks like a beautiful refresh! Stoked for those who are going to grab one, it’s been a long time coming
would like to see how the samyang/rokinon AF 24-70 f2.8 stacks up with this new sony and the sigma. Everyone is comparing them to the tamron, but that is no true competitor due to it's bit different range.
Thank you very much for this review, this was so very helpful. You checked off every important item us photographers look for, image quality weight and size, build quality, weight and size, focusing ability...and yes...weight and size! Appreciate very much also your disclaimers, makes us viewers trust you even more....Thank you again!
I own and am a massive fan of this lens (24-105 f/4). Sure, f/2.8 has it's place for DoF and obviously better low light, but having the extra reach does come in handy - especially on my a7iii which lacks the larger MP sensors to crop in with. Definitely a great bang for buck option for a wide range of applications.
Could you tell me what you think the best "FULL AUTO MODE" is for this lens and the Sony A7Siii. I have these and I am not good with it. The Sony 90 v produces more useable footage. I need advice.
I've been wanting to replace the kit lens I got with my 7IV. Decided to order the Sigma, thanks for the excellent practical comparison, it was more or less perfect for what I was looking for in terms of info on GM I and II vs the Sigma. :)
Hey Gerald Undone and Gerald Undone community, I hope you can help me solve this problem. I recently bought a Ninja V and own a Sony a7 IV. If connected, I’m stuck at UHD25 or UHD50 (my preferred codec is ProRes LT) how do I change resolution (and fps)? Changing it in-camera doesn‘t change it. I did some research but nothing much came up and the few tipps I found did not help.
Nice video. Confirms that I made the right decision in getting the sigma a few months ago after watching your comparison video. I could have afforded any of them at the time but the choice between the GM I and the Sigma was simple. And now between the GM II and the sigma I don’t see any reason to swap or feel buyers remorse. I love the sigma so far and feel it has a real character to it. The only thing that really makes the new GM more attractive is reduced size and weight. They really needed to hit a lower price point. I got the sigma and the Sony 20mm 1.8 for less than the price of the GM II.
I’ve got a friend selling me the original 24-70 for the same price as the the sigma. So I’m going that route. Only trinity lens left for a version 2 is the 16-35 2.8
How big the dust issue with the sigma ? I really want it. But if its a big problem, I dont mind buying the GM I. But is it like 50 % of the sigma lenses, or ?
Like always, what makes Gerald's videos so impressive is that he presents the choices in an extremely unbiased fashion. Some reviewers elegantly dodge any potentially negatives of a product if they are image ambassadors etc :-) It seems though like all these new premium zoom lenses (just like the new 70-200 ii) still have pretty weak bokeh and out of focus transitions. Just looking at the focus breathing section starting around @3:02min this is a rendering that if we talk about prime lenses you get at the 800 USD below mark from budget manufacturers. Even very old primes typically render so much better. So I am surprised that in most reviews people say "rendering is excellent". I guess what is meant is "for being a zoom lense it's as best as you can hope for". Seems to be really hard to get very nice rendering on top of all the other stuff that needs to be corrected in zoom lenses, some compromises have to be made after all.
Great review, as always. I own the Sigma (yes, I did something right) and love it. I use it all of the time because it’s so versatile. I’m sure the Sony lenses are superior and have their prime lenses but the Sigma 24-70 is a great lens.
Thank you for the review Mr G, for once I can sleep easy! I don't think the original GM was heavy The weight reduction with GM2 is not as significant as when they upgraded the 70-200mmGM. Re size, I thought GM1 was/is fine. I use it to shoot docs handheld (no gimbal) and the barrel of the GM1 has always felt a good size in the palm of my XXL hand. I got my GM2 at a really good price, so I can rest easy. I've only just got the 70-200GM2. Now that IS a massive improvement on the first version.
Phenomenal comparison -- I'd like to purchase a second lens for making videos and was wondering if I should consider the 24-70 focus range or the 35-150 from TAMRON? Thank you, Gerald ✌🏼
Can you compare the new GM II with the Sigma and new Tamron 28-75 G2? I feel as though the updates are significant enough to the GM and Tamron to warrant an updated 24-70 comparison video
Not sure if anyone in the comments has covered this but the dust issues are localized to the first batch of lenses that didn’t have a seal that was put in later. I believe that they would clean the lens and install the seal under warranty
That sigma 24-70 is a bargain. Looked better in center and close in corners to me. Didn’t expect the bokeh to have onion rings. Despite looks like a success and the size and weight looks to be the biggest benefit.
What Sony should have done here is offered the specs of the GM2 at a price range slightly above the Sigma. For double the price and then some the Sigma is still looking like the best all around option if we're looking at price to performance ratio. In my opinion this thing is going to sell like shit at that price point. I've been torn between waiting for this or going for the 50mm 1.2 and giving up convenience for optical specs but this has confirmed that I'm just going for the 50. If I'm going to spend 2300 I might as well go for the best of the best with honors
Would love to see that. If Sony priced this at, say $1598, it would be incredibly tempting for loads of people and wouldn't be too hard to justify. At more than double the price of the Sigma and closer to triple the price of the Tamron G2, this just doesn't make sense to me. If it was fully internal zoom at this same size then maybe :)
I think we’ll likely see Sigma release a new 24-70 DG DN Contemporary version, which will likely also have the aperture ring, will be interesting to see how that stacks up.
Whaaat? What a nice surprise to start the day with coffee and this video! I can't wait for Sony to release a new 16-35 GM. The lighter form factor is very welcomed. Oh, and I'd like to also have focus breathing correction on the A7SIII/FX3, which are more expensive than the A1. Sony should 'tier' their firmware updates so anything higher priced than the A7IV gets the same features.
Lens looks good.. I’d love to upgrade my 24-70gm & 70-200gm to the V2s for that weight saving! It’s just hard spending money on something you’ve already got instead of something exciting that you don’t have haha! 😂 just another one to “put on the list”
Well I m using a 24-70 canon ok my FX9 and was looking forward for a sony equivalent with a good manual focus option for film work. Which the previous sony lenses sucked balls at imo. So really excited about this one
Damn where’s the Tamron 28-75 v2 in this? Heard a small mention. It’s crazy how I remember when the Tammy came out everyone wanted it and got it. Now it’s barely in the convo.
I have Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II. Scored one in great shape second hand. I shoot a lot of outdoor scenes, I get something I call morse code chromatic aberration, as it lines along edges. In some scenes I can adjust the aperture to reduce fringing significative, it definitely helped a lot, I will experiment with this in various sceneries. But at 2.8 it will have lots of it. I've not seen anyone show this anywhere yet. So I posted some examples of this on my Flickr. I hope my lens is not broken somehow, but it was from a camera store so was likely inspected, but it was in mint condition. 7:14 So does the Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II. Mine had zero dust, despite being an used lens, it was in mint condition, no dust, I checked straight away, but after using it a while it had some dust between the elements.
How is the exposure change through the zoom range on this new version. Im having issues with my 24-105 in the studio on fashion shoots keeping consistent exposures. Between a full length shot at say 35mm and a detail at 105mm im finding about 1/2 stop change. Really difficult when i need to match stills and video side by side.
How do you find the new lens compares to the 24-105 f/4 G? (Aside from the obvious two items, max aperture and the 70-105 range). I bought the 24-105 because I heard it was generally better than the 24-70 I in sharpness and autofocus as long as f/2.8 didn’t matter. Now I’m considering upgrading to the 24-70 II.
I am looking to buy a walkaround lens, and considered the 24-105 f/4, but now the 24-70 is almost the same weight, has wider aperture and is for sure sharper, meaning cropping to get 105mm FoV is likely close to the 24-105mm performance @105mm. Both lenses support 30fps on the A1. Since I do not have a walkaround zoom yet I am happy I waited for the GM2 release, I think I'll get it. Just weighing now ups/downs of Sigma/Tamron which don't support 30fps but otherwise are great. Hope that helps with your upgrade consideration :)
Hey Gerald, you mentioned the new GM has a shorter minimum focus and larger maximum magnification than the Sigma but everywhere on Google it states the sigma shoots closer. This is the main factor for me so can you please confirm when/if you get the chance. Thank you!
Do you think that Sigma will release a new 24-70 2.8 now that Tamron and Sony have released their new versions? I'm thinking of getting the GM II, but I'm hesitant about what sigma will do now.
Oh boi Honestly I expected more from sony. Happy i grabbed 16-35 gm still like it more than this. Maybe something more interesting will come out in future... but generally now I am kinda more looking at 35-150 tamron than 24-70 gm ii
After a while using my new GM II, I noted that most of the reviews comment on the zoom ring “smooth or tight” switch plays a big role in varying the lense with my camera mounted to my capture clip. In tight, the barrel stays tight and does not extend. I feel that is the main point of the switch.
Only thing you didn’t mention that is important to me is distortion. Any idea how does it compare to Sigma? Otherwise great review, straight to the point. Thanks!
Still the king of no nonsense, no fluff, straight forward reviews! Thx Gerald

Thank you, Gerald. Your lens comparison videos help me make decisions about lens purchases
That settles it. I'll be picking up the Sigma! Thanks for the review,
I’ve got a friend selling me the original 24-70 for the same price as the the sigma. So I’m going that route. Only trinity lens left for a version 2 is the 16-35 2.8
So what lens are great for sports?? I’m
Using it for my daughter jiujitsu competition.
How big the dust issue with the sigma ? I really want it. But if its a big problem, I dont mind buying the GM I.
But is it like 50 % of the sigma lenses, or ?
I went with the Sigma Art 24-70 a year ago and have been very happy with the results other than the added weight it brings.
ruclips.net/video/CkhET7t2NvU/видео.html if you do have a dust issue its a simple fix, Great Lens
You haven't considered the new samyang 24-70mm which is for me the best bang for the buck at this range at the moment
Best way to include a sponsor ever!
Silly Question.....does the lens hood for the GM II work with the original Sony 24-70 GM?
Like always, what makes Gerald's videos so impressive is that he presents the choices in an extremely unbiased fashion. Some reviewers elegantly dodge any potentially negatives of a product if they are image ambassadors etc :-)
It seems though like all these new premium zoom lenses (just like the new 70-200 ii) still have pretty weak bokeh and out of focus transitions.
As always, this was super helpful, and your contextualization of things is really appreciated. Thank you!
Just got the Tamron G2, would this be worth it for the focus breathing alone?
Excellent review. All the info I came for and the comparisons I wanted to know.
Great review, as always. I own the Sigma (yes, I did something right) and love it. I use it all of the time because it’s so versatile. I’m sure the Sony lenses are superior and have their prime lenses but the Sigma 24-70 is a great lens.
I had to get this lens plz tell me when should I do this. I had this plan for a long time.which one best for sony a7iii.
This is so helpful ❤️ you are really my go to guy whenever i need camera or lens tips.
I wonder how it compares with the new Samyang 24-70 F2.8, for anything other than weight?
Determining the value of the lenses can be hard. Your videos however, are incredible value without a doubt :)
Any opinion on how Samyang 24-70 f/2.8 compares to the given lenses?
That sigma 24-70 is a bargain. Looked better in center and close in corners to me. Didn’t expect the bokeh to have onion rings. Despite looks like a success and the size and weight looks to be the biggest benefit.
Agreed centre sharpness looked better for Sigma (also showed less fringing though there was a warmer colour cast).
I got my sigma brand new for 900. Such a good value.
I'd still get the Sigma 2.8 and have $1300-$1500 leftover 1 or 2 super fast primes.
this review made love the sigma art 24-70 even more!
I think we’ll likely see Sigma release a new 24-70 DG DN Contemporary version, which will likely also have the aperture ring, will be interesting to see how that stacks up.
@@ВсеволодИгоревичАврутский Even better! I always felt going to 24 added so much extra weight.
@@ВсеволодИгоревичАврутский this is much more interesting for me tbh
So really excited about this one
v1 is still good. I'll just slowly save until I can get it.
@@CrainerEU yeah the MF focus ring sounds lovely
Another brilliant video. But I will always miss the jingle at the beginning!
Damn where’s the Tamron 28-75 v2 in this? Heard a small mention. It’s crazy how I remember when the Tammy came out everyone wanted it and got it. Now it’s barely in the convo.
Thanks Gerald. Great review like always 👍
Fantastic Lens! Definitely picking it up and glad i skipped out on the Version 1. Thanks for the review Gerald Undone. :)
Will there be a sigma 24-70 f2.8 mark ii coming out?
Thanks for such a good, clear and short review. All we need to know, straight forward 🖖. Greetings from Chile.
Bought it instantly. Then I watched your review. Glad I bought it.
Always love the detail you share in your lens reviews! The new Sony 24-70 seems like such a good investment! May have to commit and get it! 💯✔️🔥
Yeah, he's very focused :) (insert badumtschiiiii) :D
Always comes correct, definitely good to see the details in comparison
Everytime you say 'significantly', a unicorn softly kisses my neck.
Had the sigma for a year. Absolute beauty 💘
still the king of youtube
Simply the best reviewer out there!
Do you think its gonna be 35 1.8 II?
Oh boi
Honestly I expected more from sony. Happy i grabbed 16-35 gm still like it more than this. Maybe something more interesting will come out in future... but generally now I am kinda more looking at 35-150 tamron than 24-70 gm ii
would love to see this new sony vs the new tamron
After a while using my new GM II, I noted that most of the reviews comment on the zoom ring “smooth or tight” switch plays a big role in varying the lense with my camera mounted to my capture clip. In tight, the barrel stays tight and does not extend. I feel that is the main point of the switch.
Only thing you didn’t mention that is important to me is distortion. Any idea how does it compare to Sigma? Otherwise great review, straight to the point. Thanks!
Glad my Sigma is still holding up pretty well. Lighter weight is definitely nice though.
that's the best sponsor segment I've seen in a bit XD
I'm really thinking on trade my 50 mm 1.2 for this new GMii, I most of the time use the 35 gm instead of the 50 any way 🤔,...decision!!
