    I really loved the info you shared with us. Two weeks ago I didn't know a single word you were saying, but after doing some research, I came back to your video and now I understand (at least most of it, lol). I've wanted to get into photography and videography for the last 2 years or so, but since the pandemic started, that desire has grown more and more. I will start slow and get the 90D for now. I was looking at the 5D Mark IV and the R, but according to some reviews, they don't come close to the 90D in the videography area. What are your thoughts on the 1D X Mark III? Worth it or just wait for a better mirrorless counterpart?

    • @OrdinaryFilmmaker
      @OrdinaryFilmmaker  3 года назад

      If you're into video, stay with the 90D until you're tired of it, then upgrade to something like the R5 to take you so much further. The 90D is a terrific started for video... better than the R in my view. Buy L series lenses where you can so they can be migrated to the R system when you're ready.

  • @AreolaRock

    Great video.
    I think the only conflicting opinion I have is where you mention people starting out. I think first timers should go with the Rebel line. The t8i looks like one beast of a camera for a first timer, but for people on even tighter budgets, I will often tell people to go second hand. You can find t3is with kit lenses for well under 50% of the price of the t8i body.
    But I do think that if you're a bit more of an experienced enthusiast then the 90d is great for the photography focused, while the EOS R is where I'd push videographers.

    • @OrdinaryFilmmaker
      @OrdinaryFilmmaker  4 года назад +4

      Thanks for the comment David.
      I started with the Canon 50D. It was easy to use and so filled with capabilities I was not left wanting. I knew nothing about cameras. I had a useless point and shoot before I bought it. For an amateur, it was very powerful, but not overly so. The 90D with video and photo capabilities are enough that a first time owner would not need to upgrade for 10 years or more. But as I did mention, people need to come up with their own capabilities to make their own decision. I am just here to inform, but starting with the 90D really gives a creative soul a lot of power.
      The T8i is almost as powerful as the 90D. I did a compare between the capabilities of these two cameras two months ago. Personally, I'd be happy with either one.
      But again, you did call it, I am a much more experienced filmmaker/photographer, and I have learned so much since I started this channel. For years manual settings scared me away from manual, but auto and scene modes make getting to use these cameras relatively simple. I then migrated to AV and TV. I still don't shoot photos on manual because I don't have enough experience. My wife usually take photos with her phone. I am called in where the phone just can't get he work done. It's hard switching from photo to video in a "shoot".

      Ideally, having two cameras makes sense. It's impossible to get camera to do everything. The R5 gets you close, but you have to deal with heat generation and restricted video modes. Good for the casual stills guy, but not so much for professional. Worrying about limits gets in the way.

    For someone who is quite literally just starting out with DSLR's and is entering university (the course has a module dedicated to photography and video) and wants to get involved into video and short film making, would the 90 D be a good buy? I am sceptical about the EOS R because even with the release of the R5 and R6 there seems to be no inclination of a cost cut and I cannot wait until Black Friday before buying a camera. The only trade-off that I am worried about is if the RF lenses are going to completely wipe out the EF and EF-S very soon, which would make cameras like 90D practically outdated.
    I will mostly be dealing with short-film and ad making (student projects first and hopefully get into it full time) along with photography where I assume I'll be doing a decent mix of portrait and landscape photography. Also, does canon offer any student offers on these cameras?

    • @OrdinaryFilmmaker
      @OrdinaryFilmmaker  3 года назад +1

      The 90D is a very capable camera for someone getting started in photo and video. It took me seven years to outgrow the APS-C 70D. The 90D is far more advanced. Get L lenses and you can bring them to the R system should you upgrade one day!

    • @jaya.v.5093
      @jaya.v.5093 3 года назад +1

      I think for your case the 90d is a much more cost effective camera. I own both the R and the 90D and for general purpose video the combination of 90D plus the EFS 18-135 lens is hard to beat, or go for the sigma 18-25 1.8 if you want a better low light lens. If you were to match that with the R ...you would need to spend more on RF lenses or get the EF adapter and end up getting the EFS 18 135 anyhow, to cope with the R’s crop in 4K. I would not worry about RF lenses out dating EF lenses anytime soon.

    On DP review samples site I was watching images from the Nikon D80 and 60 and they are so nice and clean. And I went on to have a look at the images from the Canon 90D and found lots of complains there about bad image quality and grains and some suggested it was the high mp that had messed it up, so I wonder has anyone else noticed that the image quality is worse than on the 80D despite the higher pixel count?

    • @OrdinaryFilmmaker

    The video helps a lot but is I am still up in the air. As a videographer, the eos R has limited capabilities but does have a C-log which can be a big help when manipulating the color of the video. The Eos R also provides a more professional look. I have personally used the Eos R multiple times and love the image quality and the capabilities it can provide. The 90D does have a lot of advantages and overall is the better camera, especially being able to shoot in 120p and no crop in 4K. I happen to shoot mainly sports and music videos which only emphasizes the importance of 120p. When it comes down to it, I don't know if the 90D can replicates the same sense of professionalism and image as the Eos R.
    The only problem I have is in a side by side video comparison, I prefer the Eos R video image over the 90D. Since I always prefer the EOS R image I can't see myself buying the 90D. Would love any thoughts or comments that can help me settle the debate?

      The 90D is good value, but if you find yourself going for the EOS R for video, you're going to feel a sense of buyers remorse. It's a good solid camera, but its video features are dated. The a7III is also dated now. Will the 90D last you three years, or is it worth upgrading to a better full frame camera? The R6 is a big jump in price. I'd wait six months. Both sony and canon are refreshing. Canon will have a better camera process between the R and the R6, and Sony with the a7 IV

    For Primarily Picture-Taking: APSC EOS-90D or a Full Frame? If you can swing it... it's better to have both. Both have benefits. If you shoot a lot of video, the APS-C helps in bright light, but not so good in low light. For stills, it depends on what your'e shooting.

      The 90D is a very good camera. It could function as a solid camera for a channel. If you channel is successful after a year or two, consider upgrading to the R5 or Sony a7S3. Consider the EF 50mm f1.2 as it grabs a lot of light. Get one new and its a good price.

But compared to the R8 - much improved rolling shutter, 6fps stills but much more accurate autofocus - 40 fps electronic. The video specs are better than both cameras, offer canon log 3 when you're ready for more dynamic range, 6K oversampled 4K ill deliver much better video than the R or 90D, and up to 180 fps with autofocus ;)

  • @gbjib3827
    @gbjib3827 4 года назад +4

    A 90D is not the entry level. A SL3 is! For video, the 90D's APS-C sensor more closely matches the field of view of most S35 cinema cameras. DPAF works in 4K and has Eye focus. Battery grips are readily available to shoot through most of a day and the added benefit of moving the battery to the side so you don't need to unmount your camera on a tripod. STM lenses and newer generations of lenses make sharper images on a 90D because of the pixel pitch, you would want to shoot above F5.6.
    Add the Technicolor Cinestyle to help with better dynamic range.

    • @OrdinaryFilmmaker
      @OrdinaryFilmmaker  4 года назад +1

      I don't believe I referred to it as an entry level camera. At the beginning I said it was medium to high end and a full featured APSC camera. However, that does not mean I don't recommend it a person's first time camera. Budget permitting, it is a great starter camera if you want to unleash your creative soul.
      The SL3 is far more limited in capabilities. If the 90D was too high of a price, I'd consider the T8i or just save longer. While more expensive, you will get more life out of it and upgrade less often.

    • @gbjib3827
      @gbjib3827 4 года назад +1

      Ordinary Filmmaker I don’t want to be confrontational but that’s what you said. The t8i is still handicapped in the 4K on dpaf per canon. I feel that the 90d is an Easter Egg to the dslr community from Canon. I was seriously considering the EOS R and RP but financially, they don’t fit for what you get. The EOS R5 and R6 do have my interest if Canon is reasonable. Otherwise, I may still look hard at the 1DX mark 3 for my videos or stretch to the C300m3. I only occasionally do stills and think that the rush to mirrorless is bending the market when it may not necessarily be the end all quite yet. I have many EF photo and cinema lenses that serve me well. Starting out in mirrorless maybe the future but it’s not the standard. Short of a few very high-end sets of cinema glass for full frame, don’t let the hype rush you into an immature system. Yes, RF glass is great but until cinema cameras are redesigned for mirrorless glass, it’s not a Hollywood system.

    90d looks like better but paired with stm 24 f2.8 and nifty 50 1.8 and atomos you can get both screens to work! Outputs 4k and 1080p clean. 1080p is 422 8bit like my Canon g30. Forget 10bit color. It's a gimmick. Forgot the internal codecs lol. dual pixel autofocus in 4k and 1080p. You loose 4k 10bit output on 90d and log but who cares. If you frame your shots with blur the background does not need log. Sames as subject. Use reflector or place your subject in shade. All these rules follow photographer so log is pointless. In studio log is waste of time if you control 3 point lighting. Put some flesh makeup on or use cpl to get rid of shine on flesh. 90d has 23.96, 29.97, 59.94 and 120. It's no brainier. 4k 30 too. Has mini HDMI! Headphone jack, nice preamps, big one for me is both screens work with clean HDMI. I use Canon g30 and want a camera as second cam. I'll never sell my Canon g30 with fixed lens of 1.8fstop full out. And total locked apature of 2.8 thru entire 28mm to 250 zoom. I'm going to purchase 90d. I can use g30 for zoom shots and fixed shots 90d. Also put 90d on my glidecam hd4000 with vest x10 which I own with Canon 28mm 2.8 lens and simply enable dual pixel autofocus as I use glidecam. Prevent unbalanced as the lens is light and zoom does not come out from lens far. Also need filter with cpl can be added to 52mm thread.

      I would not class the EOS R as the entry level full frame either. I said it was a mid to low end full frame camera. The RP is Canon's entry level mirrorless.

      That was what most reviewers missed when the EOS R first came out - it was a mirrorless version of the 5D with a bunch of improvements. They should have called it the 5D mark IV plus, the 5D mark IV S or something cheesy like that.

Or the tradition that goes further back but without the term "Boxing Day" when the church used to leave boxes out to collect donations to deliver to the poor. @@OrdinaryFilmmaker well that's nice to hear. I think the R5 will have plenty of battery life for most situations, seeing as the R already performs really well actually, and the R5 even has a higher capacity battery. For travel, just bringing a couple of extra batteries in your bag would be enough i believe.

      @@OrdinaryFilmmaker both 4K at 30fps. 90d is higher megapixel albeit smaller sensor. Picked up the 90D for $1420 Australian. The R is $2800+ and assuming your upgrading from aps-c, you need to buy new lenses or adapters. I personally see no value in an “upgrade” to the R! Scratching for the smallest increase in image detail is worthless when everything we upload falls into the hands of aggressive compression on Instagram, Facebook or RUclips.
      Comparing a video taken on 90D to a full frame battery guzzling mirrorless on RUclips. Picking the difference at the consumer end is near impossible.
      Creative talent and smart editing with thousands more in your back pocket to spend on gimbals, drones, lighting and lenses has worked for my wife, up till recently, she has made significant coin using nothing more then an 80D, Crane v1 gimbal and a DJI drone delivering output 1080p to VERY happy (return) customers.
      90d with 4K was worth the leap, but we still use the 80d and image quality is honestly similar... I certainly don’t believe the R to be worth twice the price and the hassle of expensive new lenses. Maybe consider the R if your buying from scratch.
      But again. Return on your investment gets exponentially harder the more you spend. People need to remember, Individuals hire the talent and reputation more then they hire a “bigger sensor”. Entirely depends on your field of work, but as much as we would like to deliver higher image “quality”, we never once had a customer request 4K specifically. All the businesses and individuals want engaging media to share on the big 4 social media platforms and 90% of people including customer proofs (sadly) still watch them from their phone. This is the reality and where you should invest - all this of course is assuming your looking to make some coin from your camera.

    The EOS R is $600 more than the 90D. $700 more when you add the EF adaptor, so its really not close in price at all. I shoot portraits and I chose the 90D over the R. I prefer to shoot 85mm but 85mm lenses are expensive. I'll take my cheap 50mm becoming an 80mm on an APS-C camera over the slight DOF advantage with FF.

    • @OrdinaryFilmmaker
      @OrdinaryFilmmaker  3 года назад

      Price is relative based on sales. They get close enough that many ask the question of which to choose. $700 is less than the price of a lens. Its about moving from APS-C to FF - does it provide enough benefit to justify the upgrade.
