- In Elden Ring PvE and PvP there are plenty of Ashes of War, some better than others, some really bad, some really good. Today we take a look at one of the best ash of war in the game: Storm Stomp. But its power doesn't come from great design, but a bad one instead. Ranni the witch explains to you all about it.
Wether it's Rivers of Blood, Moonveil, Flaming Strike or any other tool in the game, balance is important. Storm Stomp is COMPLETELY UNBALANCED and should be changed. But is it really THAT important?

I made a paladin who makes genuine use of great shields and the great mace. Storm stomp happens to deal only physical damage and very little stamina damage.
Guess what hard counters that?

Spectral lance does very nice damage on an occult weapons and high arcane (because it's a occult bullet art)
And relatively good stance pressure too.

Although I prefer the updated poise system to passive poise, one thing I appreciated was having 101+ poise and being able to backstab storm crutch users.
The hyperarmor update made pvp objectively worse. The game wasnt balanced around hyperarmor and which AoW's have hyperarmor and which dont seems completely random and arbitrary.

As someone who uses Hoarah Loux thug shaker and storm stomp on a usual basis, i agree that Storm stomp is a bit too good.
However it is still easier to then unsheathe and moonveil.

I invaded a guy once who bowed etc. He started resorting to storm stomp spam. I managed to counter him and start making him chug estus. It resulted in him calling the fun police and 3v1 ganking me with tea bags after I finally died 10 minutes later.

I love the storm ashes of war especially because of their down to earth design. When it comes to fantasy and there are all these spells and abilities that make you feel like you're in a rave party for gods, i appreciate the more down to earth and "simple" magical things. Making a rustic kind of built with just these is always fun, though rn my themed built is a storm wolf, with lightning claws and the drake katana in the off hand really makes for some cool ass looking build with a nice feel. I just wish we could have more red lightning spells.

One of my favorite things to do with my og colossal build was run 2 banished knight halbers or GS's in my r1 and r2 slots. Storm assault and caller on the hals and vacuum slash and storm blade on the gs.
Id rock full banished knight drip as I swap the weapons with only ever having one on my back making me feel like a real master of storms wielding multiple ashes at once on one weapon.
Been thinking of it, having a "get off me" tool against ppl that play too aggro with light weapons is probably fine and punishes reckless play.
My suggestion would be : make it work a bit like rejection and produce a slight knockback into a knockdown instead of just a long stun.
That would allow you to take priority back (at the cost of hp if you traded) but you have to perform a proper wakeup attack afterwards to deal big damage instead of getting a free guaranteed trade.
You could probably leave the damage/poise damage/hyperarmor/range values unchanged with that approach. Maybe even make it unpoisable without hyperarmor?
It'd also have the side effect of making it actually do something in PvE, i clearly remember testing it as soon as i got it on release, dealt like 12 damage to a godrick soldier and said "nope" lmao.
Opinion on that approach ? There might be side effects i haven't thought of.
I would happily trade against it every time then. Becomes very bad. I already did the damage now you gotta attempt to do it but can easily fail.

I keep visualizing Ranni ranting at my player character with these ramblings and it's golden amusement, the best ash of war, no cap.
Storm Stomp is definitely not broken, it’s way easier than you’d think to play around it. Yeah, it has insane hyperarmor, but once the opponent gets their free damage on the first stomp you can just play a bit more defensively and they’re forced to try and close distance to land it, and then you can punish it when they inevitably spam and whiff it over and over again like a dumb fuck.
I’d argue that Spinning Slash is far stronger right now, especially on Dragon Halberd or Nagakiba. As of 1.10, it’s a true combo regardless of which weapon you land the first hit on.
If you land Dragon Halberd’s Spinning Slash and you have the right talismans, it takes two thirds of your HP bar instantly and procs frostbite on top of that, which is a percentage based damage effect that also gives you a fucking defense debuff, so getting hit by it is basically game over. Also, the weapon has insane poise in general, crazy poise on the regular R1 poke to the point it feels like cheating. Just land Dragon Halberd SS once and then swap to Two-Handed Cleanrot Sword and you’ll never lose in the arena again.
Nagakiba Spin-Slash can be infused with anything you want and enchanted with consumables and magic, it comes out super fast, and has insane hyperarmor as well with good poise. Bloodflame Nagakiba with Double Slash, Spinning Slash, or Sword Dance is fucking broken right now in the hands of any mildly skilled player.
I think you should make a spinning slash video ngl because it’s applications on infusables are insane across the board and I don’t see enough people malding about it.
But you assume that your opponent is a dumbass that spam storm stomp to aggress.
A dude with more brains will use it where it's good aka when he can force a trade, you can go more passive, but then you let him do what he want. He can shut down your aggression, you can't (unless you stomp his stomp lol)
Spins being essentially better storm stomps is another story, a real goofy story 😔
Keep in mind that ,
unbeknownst to most people , NONE of the spinning slashes are true combos 😋
For dragon halberd and big weapons spin , you need around 105 poise to poise through 2nd hit and you always roll away the 3rd .
For nagakibas and the fast spins , you need 123 poise to again poise through the 2nd hit amd roll the 3rd 😊😎
I agree spining slash is just as overtuned or more rn, but the strat you mention only works against someone who doesnt know how to use storm stomp.
Its not something you use offensively, a stomper who knows what they are doing wont chase you down. They will instead wait for you to agress so they can reaction trade the moment you commit to an atack, and use the follow up to win those trades.
Rn Imo one of the best ways to deal woth storm stomp is ultra geat sword crouch R1.
It can tank and even stagger the stomp.
@@SonicC33 Needing to wear heavy armor to meet poise breakpoints because of a single ash of war isn’t balanced at all IMO.
The non-HA version of this ash of war (Storm Kick) requires really precise timing and spacing to land and follow-up with, but it's ultra satisfying when I pull it off. I think a happy medium (VERY late HA activation) would work the best.

@@HappyIsaac0420 Veteran's Prosthesis. I say non-HA because it has no hyperarmor at all. If you get hit at any time before the wind AOE it cancels.
I dont think the HA has to be that late, just enough that it cant be used on reaction would fix it

Have not used Storm Stomp since 1.1 but I would never consider it broken, it's a. great way to deal with people who are over-extending in terms of aggression. Typically, when people notice it once and they have a level of skill they just play around it.
The problem is that it can react to most on most Weapon R1. You can't really play around if the user have good finger.
Its not the worst/most broken ash, but frame 1 HA makes it so that you can reaction trade everything and the follow up means it will end up winning the trade. It just encourages lame play.
@@Arl-es idk you don't really need an aow to react to an r1. the only thing i'm seeing it do is give you a mix-up so that you can react to an r1 in a way the opponent isn't expecting, which a lot of other aow can do if positioned right.
@@eldenlean5221 This is a good point, def feels kind of like Moonveil to me though, in that you can play around it if you know what's going on, and if done to quickly it can be punished. Idk like i don't think its not good cause it clearly is but I just never see it at as something with that much utility unless ur weapon-swapping.

Can someone please inform Snow Witch Ranni that hyperarmor of storm stomp kicks in on 5th frame and NOT on 1st ? which means you need a 4 frame window of action to actually storm stomp anyone ... Still pretty strong ofc !!
Also , lets not forget what dear Ranni said , that strom stomp before patch 1.10 was garbage !!! Since 100 poise was easily reached by most competitive fashions ...

I think it should have longer recovery time. That has little to do with the 1.10 patch. 100 poise makes people wear the ugliest armor even if they don't want to, so storm stomp was broken before 1.10 in that respect. I think 1.10 was a really good patch. Totally worth the problems that appeared. That doesn't mean those problems aren't still problems that need fixed.
Heck, we paying for previous Fromsoft games is a request for them to make more games. So we are responsible for them releasing the game in a broken state with the logic you're using. If we didn't pay for other games with similar mechanics they released they couldn't make more games of the same style. An unreleased game can never be broken. Therefore it was our mistake from the beginning. I don't like that logic.
Nerfing Storm stomp doesnt reverb to 1. 09 lmao what are you talking about, you can still nerf the hyperarmor it gets and keep the mostly good stuff of 1.10

Fromsoft is not the best fit developer for player vs player game balance lmao not even for player vs environment balancing tbh. They are superb artists that make beautiful experiences, but they are not very good in terms of designing good gameplay systems. Even when they do make a decent gameplay system, they end up getting rid of it or butchering it in the next title they release, instead of keeping it and building upon it.
It's not easy to achieve a good balance in a game as massive as Elden Ring, it just has an absolutely massive amount of enemies, armors, talismans, spells, weapons, and skills that can all interact with each other. It would give your average developer or systems designer six migraines, stacked. What Fromsoft did was good, and serviceable, but not perfect.
What bothers me is that they have a vision of their gameplay systems which they stick to it until the release of the game, then the game releases and the issues with those systems become much more apparent, and they start rebalancing the game according to that vision. But in almost every Soulsborne game so far, they end up throwing out a lot of how the systems used to work, and replace it with better systems, betraying their original vision. It happened with many of Dark Souls 2's systems (mostly non-PvP, but there were also other very important PvP-centric changes), and it happened with Dark Souls 3's hyper armor in the Ariandel patch, and it happened with Elden Ring's poise; it's bound to happen again.
It upsets me that they don't just stick to and refine their vision further and further over the course of several games until it's cream of the crop perfect, or instead understand that each game is going to be different and plan for new, better replacement systems from the moment that they receive data after the game's launch instead of trying to salvage the systems they launched with. It's a waste of time for them, and the players suffer the consequences.

I think the loss of passive poise was the worst possible fix to the game because things like storm stomp. passive poise was the counter to it, although the adula moon blade spam did succ ass in the previous patch i think the best fix for that was to just reduce the trackin for it like most things like thrusting swords and spear and great spears. Simpler fix and also keeps storm stomp in check while also making heavier builds work better and allowing lighter builds to work great too.
Ranni being a sweaty PVP gremlin is canon at this point, i cant not associate her character with this channel

0:59 TO BE FAIR Spectral lance scales off arcane and weapon levels NOT weapon AR and it looks like you have a keen or quality swordspear meaning you aren't scaling or built to use it for damage. When you unlocked for a moment and overthrew the spear it showed the upward arc of the spear which in my opinion is good for pve since it's easier to land headshots and stagger. In pve spectral lance also deals insane poise damage but I would not recommend it in pvp due to how long the animation is which will usually leave you open to punishes. Storm Blade or Beast's Roar would suit your build better and are also faster and more reliable in pvp.

Never used storm stomp, but I kind of only play PvE so the best weapons are the ones that poisebreak bosses easily, maybe the stomp is actually good.
Storm stomp is amazing in pve for dealing with regular enemies

storm stomp shouldn't give you so much hyper armor, making it more easily counterable and requiring more timing to do it
PS: maybe givin' it an a little bit longer windup, not to much to much, i think removing its hyper armor + making it super slow would just make it terrible, but just increasing its wind up a liiiittle bit would make so you have to think a little more before using it, instead of just spamming the exact time something gets on your area ot threat

I think incants and sorceries just need their hyper armor tweaked up higher in some cases, but not all.
But those spells do damage related to their spell stats. How does it invalidate a magic explosion when the only thing it can confirm is a physical attack ?
They don't serve the same purpose in the first place. Even if one does more damage the comparaison is misplaced.

By the way, I don't think Storm Stomp is particularly broken. There are many counterplay options, one of which I found to be colossal weapons that now can easily tank through storm stomp, and at that point you're trading, doing way more damage than you get. And if you don't like colossals, bull-goat talisman can pretty much achieve the same thing on weapons that have innate hyperarmor (like Greatswords or curved greatswords).
i'm still not sure it's that bad tho, or the worst thing ER has faced until now. probably yeah, changing a bit some numbers in the hyperarmor values or the amount of frames in the hitboxes wold make it less anoying to fight againts, still we have hyperarmor on a lot of weapons that can tank it.

It can be parried. Sorta if you use carian retaliation it can cancel the stun that comes with storm stomp . Im not sure about others tho
I think if there’s any way they should change it is to add more recovery time. Storm Stomp isn’t that scary when you have a setup with either good blocking or poise options, but becomes a problematic matchup against shorter, faster weapons with no poise. My normal strat against storm stomp as a greatsword/colossal sword main is to either just trade with it or outspace it, but neither of those are really an option if I’m using a Shamshir. This could be mitigated by Ashes that counteract Storm Stomp, but the usual counterplay of fast weapons against something they can’t outspace or outtrade is to land a hit during recovery frames, but Storm Stomp’s recovery is so damn fast that, combined with its lingering hitbox negates this strategy

If they did that, though, storm stomp would just be unusable.
On a basic level, the job of storm stomp is to extend the punish window on something, sharing some design space with like a parry.
If there was too much endlag it would just be a horrendous aoe.
Reducing the armor a bit is probably the best change. It's not going to muscle through good, clean hits with big weapons, and now has to weave between whiff punishing big hits, and recognizing weaker ones that can be armored through.
But idk

Dont know if you have yet, or if you'll get what I mean, but I think a video comparing DS3 pvpers and Elden Ring pvpers would be intersting for some. Ive never seen such immediate hostility towards invaders until Elden Ring. I rarely get to goof off with the host, cosplay builds are almost non-existent, and let's not forget the gank squads waiting for Elden Ring invaders always having the same builds

People keep sleeping on spectral Lance but spectral Lance headshot on a occult build with shard of Alex and the spear talisman on hits for 1500+ if you hit them during an attack yes it does Pierce damage it's also an amazing rollcatch because of its slower speed and it's minimal drop off range if you use the arrows reach talisman and in pve it's the new flame of the redmanes doing 27 poise damage per hit if put on the lance
Knock knock... hello, can I interest you in our lord and savior, the Zamor Curved Sword? It's weapon skill trades on reaction to storm stomp and beats it. Unlike the spell version, the weapon skill has hyper armor.
It would be nice if Storm Stomp combo'd like a Piercing Fang, but then didn't have Hyper Armor. It would be a cool mixup for weapons that struggle to hit people behind you if your opponent rolled around you - and leave the hyper armor and damage to the Earthshakers and the Stormcallers. Storm Stomp is the fast one that's good to mixup combos, while Earthshaker and Stormcaller is your go-to for overconfident traders like ganks.
Literally had someone tell me: "just dodge it lol" when they put Storm Stomp on a Banished Knight Halberd and did nothing but that the whole match. I am hoping they'll see their video, but something tells me their cognitively deficient brain will never learn.
Equip storm stomp, reaction stomp his stomp, profit. Never stomp first.
Find him and do that.
Or use a weapon with hyper armour and you can ignore his storm stomp.
Or use a ranged ash of war and kite / back pedal all match.

storm stomp with rapier would be the most realisticly good build in elden ring.
i think overhauling it to be chargeable and give the stomp hyper armor only if you charge could keep the fast one still useful without being free. But idk given fromsoft's history this could make it even more broken somehow

I used Spectral Lance on my Historically Inspired Viking Huscarl build to have a mock-up to carrying a sheaf of javelins on his back.
Was able to break stance pretty good in PVE.
But yeah, it doesn’t do a whole lotta damage.

Never in my life have I wanted something so much, I did not realize it until I had received it.
I think a far funnier solution is no free damage putside of the stomp itself and instead it launches people up like stamp upward cut(if they don't hyper armor it)
Its kinda like triggering someone's autism and causing them to have an episode. Its literally like a "let me pause everyone's game bc im overwhelmed by the red man"
More games should take the FighterZ approach, make everything broken so nothing is broken.

There was a point where I think Elden Ring bugged for a split second when I used Storm Stomp, and the player killed me and THEN got stunned. I'm not sure what exactly went on there 😅
For anyone who is wondering, you can use a shield to block the stomp, then immediately hit the parry button for a free parry 95% of the time
A good counter is getting good, can definitely put distance between the user when U see the animation building up than punish when done or try and bait out all there fp

Doesn’t always work. They can always storm stomp on reaction to any weapon without hyper armour to beat your trade since they get damage reduction while doing it.
The counter is either ranged ashes of war or hyper armour.
Yeah ot has a mini stun and just atack but it never really work well with me it was probably the weapon do but it doesn't mach my style and it feels wiard when I use it but idk maybe is for you
I think it should a a colossal or great weapon exclusive.
