Quickstep and bloodhound Step are in my opinion the best ash of war if your ping was moderate.
You can counter any build if you can anticipate well enough.
I dont play Elden Ring that much, but i enjoy watching Ranni passive aggressively giving me tips about weapons and Ashes of War

I.... am fond of that weapon....even if I have to wind up for the non-so-responsive, fast attacks.
grave scythe is cool, my first build, before i fell in love with eleonora's poleblade, was grave scythe with phantom slash, using blackflame blade, which is absolutely awesome, cause your phantom gets the blackflame weapon buff if you have it active when starting it, meaning if you hit all four hits of phantom slash(the initial attack with you and the phantom, with the followup of you and the phantom) you get four hits laced with blackflame. and since blackflame debuff does like 2% of a target's health as damage, thats like, a free 8% every time you land all four
The cameo from Mark was actually hella fun, you should throw in cameo characters more often depending on how inspired/creative you can get with it. Great stuff Mr Waifu
That Miyazaki foot rant was incredible never have I heard a better description of him “lord of feet” also that’s just leftover ds2 script that janked up the hitboxes.
I used storm assault way back at launch because I was doing a Final Fantasy Dragoon build. It sucked back then, it’s great now. I should re-make that build, it was fun and stylish.
I did an insect glaive build that used it
Did a Stormveil build, been using it for months and now people start complaining. It‘s a shame
Well it's only broken since a few weeks. I played fists since launch, previously garbage cause of passive poise, then a buff make them vortex and complains arise.
Sometimes it's the next dude being annoying, sometimes it's you.
Have you played final fantasy 4? There is a really cool Dragoon called Kain Highwing. He would be an amazing cosplay build for elden ring.
Me and a friend of mine had an almost embarrassingly geeky discussion about a week ago about how FromSoft would make great developers for a Final Fantasy spin-off... and now I've written up a text document about starting classes, additional classes, class crystal mechanics, etc, in a completely hypothetical game that's probably never going to exist. xD
For the record, here's what the Dragoon section looks like:
*Dragoon:* Unlocks the classic and ever-iconic Dragoon Armour which doubles the drop distance of non-lethal falls; associated equipment includes the Dragon Wingshield with a Storm Wall-based Parry, and the Dragonhead Shield with the Dragon's Breath skill; as well as the Highwind with its Dragoon Stance skill allowing for the use of an HP and MP-draining Loretta's Slash-like Lancet skill with light attack and a Storm Assault-like Jump skill with heavy attack, the Gugnir with its Spectral Lance-like signature skill, Freya's Javelin with a Spearcall Ritual-esque Dragoon Trance skill, as well as the Longinus Lance with a Holy-elemental Frenzyflame Thrust-based skill; Class Crystal enables Double Jumping and Spiritspring Jumping without a chocobo and increases jump attack damage by 0.7%/Dragoon LV.
To counter storm stop I hard swap to my unsheath uchigatana and use the crouching R1 up close because you can roll out of it almost instantly, and punish wiffs with the Unsheath R2 and the running R2 is good for fighting the range that spears have anyway. If you are running a dex build you can use nagakiba instead which has a better heavy and mad range so you can just space everything.
Ranni is always a helpful teacher smurf for us Tarnished. I always felt that storm assault wasn't worth using due to how slow it feels but the banished knights in Farum Azula have thoroughly pounded the doubts out of me.

I actually use Strom assault frequently. But relying on it can be bad if you have people who can avoid it. Or you know, shit latency, and they hit where you were on the ground and knocked you out of the air, killing you....somehow.

As always, getting ganked makes it worse. Elden Ring has more projectiles than any previous game, so more people using projectiles means long animations like this one are very vulnerable to that stuff. And one person punishing your long animation with projectiles is going to suck a lot less than multiple people doing it.
If there was ever a nerf to this AoW, I feel like reducing the startup so that it can't be used to mash out of combos would make it slightly more unique to Stormcaller and force players to be slightly more careful with it without making it awful.
@lt9539 Yes. That's why I say the hit kills you despite not being hit because of latency hit boxes.
@monsieurdorgat6864 projectiles make sense. If I see them using projectiles, I just won't use it. There is no point in taking that risk for a hit that might not land.
The hitbox isn't bugged. It's clearly intended to be that way because the wind does damage, there are wind every frame the hitbox is up

It ain't about being bugged, it's about being broken. Any other ashes pay HARD for lingering, stacking aoes of this size and of this speed. Storm stomp and storm caller are both harder to land bruh

I literally used this for the first time today. I started a new run with a knight theme, so I chose the Lance as my main weapon. Didn't have a lot of ashes to choose from yet, so I slapped this on it. Was intending to pick up Giant Hunt later, but maybe I'll keep this one instead. I've been relying heavily on guard counters so far on this build, so having another option when those don't work so well will be nice. One of the Lance's weaknesses is the lack of area, which this also covers nicely. I still miss my colossal sword, though, with its wide sweeps and heavy poise damage.

i remember using this a lot when nobody else used it, on a build that used all the storm ashes, and i loved it. it seems everyone else caught on that this thing is strong as hell

I remember using this during vanilla ER and having to soften poise with a few hits or fan daggers before decimating people with this lol. Now I guess everyone is an L2 God 😂 still I’m glad to see more things used as there are some sick AoW that never got used
Been using this since Chasethebro used it in a PVP livestream, back when he did them. At RL60 + 16 or so, an L2 with a lightning buffed banished knight's halberd was about 1,000 damage. He tested it a few times to see if it was really a true combo or if people just weren't rolling out of it, but it seems the hitstun was long enough that it would true combo.
You showed it off with the hitbox analysis too, but it could (at least back in an earlier patch) 3 hit with the initial stomp+jump up, and finally, the strike going down.
Grave scythe, 99% sure. While fixing the uptime of that second whirlwind hitbox could help punish it, I think the biggest fix would be to move that frame 1 hyper armor closer to 10-15 frame range. And not just for it, but for every ash, some very specific exceptions aside.
I agree, to make this ashes of war balanced, you just need to move the hyperarmor frames and reduce the hitbox time so that the enemy can dodge twice, before the first attack and before the second.
The second thing is especially true for all attacks in the game and is rarely violated. Except maybe one rotten woman.
I use Storm Assault on my "Vyke with a Pike" build, where I also utilize the Manor Tower Shield with No Skill, with Shield Grease and the Greatshield Talisman, Viridian Amber Medallion +2, Erdtree's Favor +2, and a Stamina Physick for more maximum stamina and more stamina regen. It is pretty fun being able to actually block attacks in Elden Ring, and the Pike is the best weapon to pair with this strategy because it has the longest range of any melee weapon that is not a whip, and it has the ability to poke. Also, Shield Pokes with Spears deal 125 Poise damage after 1.10 which means you can actually stagger people that aren't using Hyper Armor weapons now, that's a nice plus.

Fighting against someone who spammed this aow.. couldn't outspace it properly because of the frickin lingering hitbox. So I became him and spammed the same shit💀
My first PvP build was what i called the Storm Lord, only used the Storm AoWs and Banished Knight/Veterans Armor and weapons, as well as some other things. It was strong and honestly might remake the character for PvP
I did. the exact same thing, still have that character and I can confirm that it still shreds

My only issue with storm assault is the lingering hitbox on the second hit. The hit itself hits, then a wind barrier skin to stormp. Makes it almost impossible to punish missed storm assaults.
Well, with melee. NGL, Elden Ring gives you more tools to punish this kind of thing than previous games. Literally every kind of build in the game has multiple projectile options, and the endlag of Storm Assault makes it especially vulnerable to projectiles if whiffed.
As long as you dodge the weapon itself, you can go in with enough hyper armor (2h jump heavy, for example) to punish the landing. You can also use any ranged tool, especially if you can early dodge/space the landing. While the lagging hitbox is something that could (should?) be fixed, IMHO the bigger issue is the frame 1 hyper armor.
Ranged attacks?
I just wanted to play a Banished Knight cosplay on a strength build, with the halberd as the main weapon. This made that cosplay something that shreds apart most of the players in the arena.

The ranni character is funny as helllll but idk if I saw a single person in PvP in 1.10 use that lololol. I saw storm caller and stomp but I never saw assault on enemies, except one general prosthesis actually lol. Honestly, I love it regardless. You put so much effort in. Great fucking video lol

I love Storm Assault but people abusing it makes me quite sad, it’s just fun but I don’t want to ruin people’s fun.
In my theory, the reason the Storm Ash of Wars have such a huge hitbox that never ends is because they never got nurfed and is a remnant of launch patch, when all the weapons looked anime as fuk and nothing was balanced. And in this world, the theme of being a huge tornado came first.
Where as each cool thematic weapon got tweaked to be more balanced with their over powered aspects, the Storm Ashes were just left by themselves, since they werent that OP, well, until the poise update.
Enjoy the hitboxes while they lasts, because by the next patch they will be gone.

I see this shit absolutely everywhere in arena and when being red summoned now. It’s to the point where I see the nightrider glaive/offhand thrust setup, and (almost always correctly) assume they’re using storm assault or sword dance. They just come out so fast relative to how nuts the hyper armor is.

I used way back early on along with storm blade, caller, and vacuum slice.
Side note, vacuum slice. When I first started using it it would sometimes just eviscerate one shot people in invasions. Uneven ground was often involved but not consistent in causing it.
I haven't seen it in a while while useing it BUT I still wonder what was happening since I never saw it mentioned in patch notes. I THINK it was from the game not registering the players as "hit" since they would siesier for the whole hitboxes duration.

As an individual who goes full banished knight set with three halberds with these ashes, been using it since I first got the game; I’m honestly kinda glad that they’re better than they’re cracked up to be
I was stuck in that Rampant Tower spot for hours (cuz noob) and I never even saw that drop off, time to go back lol

I had cheeky strategies for the start of my play throughs. Storm Call and Spin Weapon on a Vulgar Militia Saw coated in Bloodflame works well for near instant blood loss procs.

So, I am studying game development rn for my college, so basicly, big semi-circle hit box means than it has more rage than the normal attack, therefore making it easier to connect

It should be noted that the cringe anti spacing wind aoe effect when you land if you somehow miss it can true combo directly into an another storm assault.

ya know whats funny? For awhile storm ashes were on the useless side but then they got buffed and became busted only for poise nerf to even further propel them and make them insane xD.

when a enemy bullshits his one attack that kills you with Super-Armor, it was the one universal "Tilt" moment for at least 3 generations of gamers.
that shit happens to me at least twice per day in "Tears of the Kingdom", so i don't expect Souls-Likes to stop it anytime soon.

absolute 10/10 i tried this way back when, probably 1.0.5 or 1.0.6, at level 40 had little health and just lured invaders for a bit of fun, before they all got scummy with rot pots and infinite starlight shards, i remembered the knight in stormveil always hits the second part, so i tried it and the power of it is staggering, if anyone rolls around your spear or halberd, hit it and they get clapped, it's a hidden gem of an ash, especially effective with lance as the slow attacks give people confidence in backstabs or running round you, then you hit this
People may have been abusing it because of the lack of weapons your able to put it on and because they’d have no idea wtf is meant by "polearms." Heck, they may not have even know the location in the first place.
Well, I actually recognized this one off the bat, amazing. Grave Scythe has been my favorite anti-shield tool since the game came out.

When I was on the game, no players were using it, as far as I can remember. It was Vykes who traumatized me with this ash of war... when he used it at the right time, you had NO chance of escaping and you ended up often dying in one hit... A true nightmare.

I was playing some co-op with my brother trying to prep a character for the DLC. Haven't played really since the game had first came out, so I was out of the loop on meta and whatnot. Imagine my surprise when I see this invader stunlock my brother and nearly kill him. Unfortunately for him, I am a faith enjoyer and was running crucible horns. Watching him get flung 15 feet into the air out of his ash of war was hilarious

I'm surprised bloody slashed isn't getting more hate. That ash of war absolutely obliterates health bars and when used sparingly you can catch opponents by surprise and annihilate them. It's also my favorite.
It can be quite telegraphed and it only hit once (not much hyperarmor I think) funny that it was broken and is now one of more balanced ashes
