Robustos: Partagas Vs. Hoyo

  • I had fun doing a comparative cigar tasting in Las Vegas a few months back at the Rhumbar at the Mirage with a Partagas Serie D No. 4 and a Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No. 2 -- both Cubans. These are the most popular Robustos made on the island. The Partagas is made at the Partagas factory and the Hoyo comes from the La Corona fabrica. I really thought the Serie D would slaughter the Hoyo. But it didn't. That's a big surprise for me, and probably it's a surprise for you too, if you love Cuban cigars.

To those who are just shitting anything out of their mouths regarding this review, I say 1) smoking 2 cigars at the same time is one right way to compare 2 cigars specially when comparing flavors 2) this is James Suckling who has been smoking and reviewing cigar since ur mom and dad were dating.

I enjoy stronger spicy cigars towards the end of the day after my palate has been used for eating and stuff all day. If I where to light the Series D up at the beginning/earlier in the day its a little too strong to enjoy the sutler flavors. The lighter, more mild cigars are better earlier in the day. In addition, I think drink parings are important too. If you have a strong drink, like the vodka in his drink, it may blunt the flavor of the Epicure No. 2 due to being very strong on the palate. The pepper/leather taste in cigars usually comes out no matter what you do but the sutler flavors are a little more difficult to taste. I'm not bashing on the video, this guy is a great reporter and has done some cool work. I am just posting for any beginning aficionados.

Just purchased a box of Partagas D4’s and one of the few Cubans that I can smoke immediately without any aging. Believe they’re a true bargain with notes of cedar, nuts, and leather with a great burn to boot. The Hoyo Epicure is a great example of a mild but very flavorful cigar that I can appreciate during the morning hours or whenever my palate is shot after a long day. Nice review but prefer smoking one cigar at a time with some sort of beverage to compliment my cigar.

I have had both, the series d is one heavy weight cigar, if you don't smoke regularly don't do it Both are fantastic but I am a Hoyo fan and the epicure 2 us my fave!

So here comes world expert James Suckling. Probably the top cuban cigar expert in the world. He puts up a free review for us.
Then the goofball trolls show their gratitude by insulting him through their A-holes.
No wonder he does so few of these.

Really? Why this guy smokes two cigarettes at the same time, when the flavors are changing depending on the cigar thirds when consumed? Why does a deep cut? Only have to cut the top of the head of the cigar, and why burn with butane lighter when it hurts the taste? Nobody expert in my country does these atrocities to these incredible cigars.

I also go for the epicure No2, I proffer the creamier Cuban blends and it delivers it in bucket loads, the D4 is a bit too spicy and peppery for my tastes, good review.

James is good, very good, and I really appreciate his refined palate and his experience as a critic. But top cuban cigar expert in the WORLD? I dont think he'd even agree with you. But all said and done, I agree with you. James needs to stop listening to fools who don't appreciate his experience and do more cigar reviews. And wine too!
