Whilst I haven't smoked a huge amount of D4's, the ones that I have smoked have been very good. Deep, rich and complex. I do find them a touch strong but with age they come back to a profile that is superb.
I’ve really enjoyed these but I understand where you coming from I’ve had a few that weren’t on the same level and kinda sour but overall I’ve had good luck with them
Just had this for the first time today (had them aging for 3 years or so) and I must say that I absolutely loved it! Lovely Woody notes with white and black peppers chocolates roasted nuts and as it progresses it gets darker dirtier/less refined with some subtle but slightly bitter earths coffees and natural tobaccos, Deep rich and complex! Just 🤌 .. this is up there with the magnum 46’s and siglo 3’s imo!
Blasphemy! HUGE D4 fan here. It’s all I smoke, although I have other Cubans in the tupperdor but I always reach for the D4. The reliable construction and the journey of each third is magical. (Veteran tip: pair it with a loose leaf black tea = 🤯)
I keep my logs at 65% but for the first time I've taken the cigar out to "dry box" or whatever approx 4 hours before smoking and my word. It's so much nicer. I didn't dislike the d4 but it wasn't one of my faves. Anyway first time I've done this so may not be relevant, but this cigar is lovely after a bit of time to acclimatise. P.s I'm in UK so more humid than usual too. But this is so so sweet (I'm on the final 3rd)
Similar experience here. When I lit that cigar up the first third was DELICIOUS, however, the flavor profile did change and the excellent flavors I was enjoying diminished quickly. I would still buy it again and gladly smoke them.
I can personally tell you that the blend and construction has slackened since 2001/2. D4s were deeper and richer in flavor and body. The construction was also better and visually you can see more leaves compacted. I would say from personal experience that over the last 20 yrs the blend has changed or at least the leaves that they use no longer taste the same. In recent years from 2019 onwards, they are beginning to taste better but not as good as they were 20 yrs ago. In fact, in my current collection of about 3500 cuban cigars, i dont even have a full box of D4s. They have been replaced by E2s. If you havent tried E2, please do so. Enjoy.
That's super interesting and great to know. Tjhank you so much for sharing that. Really awesome of you. I have tried the E2 and I think it's far superior to the D4 :).
I really like D4s. Every D4 I’ve had is decent at worst, excellent when they’re on. That sourdough kind of flavor sounds like it’s not agreeable for you. I do get that.
I’ve aged some D4’s for almost 4 years before having one and they were so good. But every batch varies. Great input man, as always. Appreciate your opinions.

Hey bud. ill be honest i feel the same way, i find the D4 to be the best Robusto only if you pick right, i have not found consistency in the blend, but O boy when you pick a good D4 there is nothing better.
I just ordered this and 2 other highly ranked cigars for making my own NET (natural extracted tobacco) ecig juice. As im not smoking the cigar, the flavor profile will stay the same. From what i hear, you get around 1,5liters of juice from a single cigar this size. That should last about a year for me, so this is extremely affordable.
Smoking it right now. Similar experience here. First third was awesome. The caramel and nuttiness was the main flavor, followed by a slight fruit flavor and slight saltiness which I really like. But after the second third, all that is left is that oily taste of that of peanut or walnut with not much. Such a letdown, it started off so well.
I have an experiment for you to try with this stick. Or any for that matter. Try leaving it at an RH of 62 for a month. Then try it. You don’t have to puff every 20-30 seconds, it stay cool and burns slow. The “sour” flavour you get will be gone. Or pair it with a nice cappuccino. Then tell me if you still get that sour flavour.

I am a beginner when it comes to cigars and was thinking all 5 in a box of five 33 gauge R&J "Julitettas" was bad sigars that was rolled to tight and plugged. But after reading that many had good success of ditching the 70% humidity at room temperature rule and go for 62 to 68% humidity instead, I tried 65% humidity for a few days with the last cigar and it suddenly tasted better, would actually burn and was not plugged or to tight anymore... Maybe some cigars seems to need to by more dry to work, one of the other cigars a "R&J Sport Largo" in my humidor did burn perfectly and did taste good. Also the 70% humidity rule seems to only be true for desert very dry climate, here is 85 to 95% humidity in summer (while still cold) and 70% humidity here seems to be to much for most cigars.

Its kind of cigar that needs some aging, if you smoke it young, your experience will be terrible... love d4, like the d6 either, but i still prefere d4..
You describe a "soapy" flavor. Those who despise cilantro describe it as such. I'm sure you know this, but this is caused by a genetic variation to olfactory genes. Nothing you can do about it and may explain why you can't stand a certain element of the D4. I agree that D5 and D6 have a slightly different profile. That said I like all three and could easily only smoke the D4 as my only cigar.
@@cigarinspector2023 That's wild. Yes, they are from the same plant. Could be something in that cigar (D4) that just doesn't work for you or simply the balance of the blend. It used to be dirt cheap: £5 in Geneva. It’s a very basic cigar. Cigar dealers are making huge profits on these by convincing novices it’s a good cigar. The E2 is the best Partagas, but they’ve made it unaffordable.
I live in the UK, it's really difficult to buy fakes here. We have proper importers and highly reputable retailers. It's virtually impossible to buy fake Cuban cigars from retailers.

Its kind of cigar that needs some aging, if you smoke it young, your experience will be terrible... love d4, like the d6 either, but i still prefere d4..
Its like a sour-salty-leathery note
You describe a "soapy" flavor. Those who despise cilantro describe it as such. I'm sure you know this, but this is caused by a genetic variation to olfactory genes. Nothing you can do about it and may explain why you can't stand a certain element of the D4. I agree that D5 and D6 have a slightly different profile. That said I like all three and could easily only smoke the D4 as my only cigar.
But I love Cilantro. It's in pretty much every dish my mum makes :). We call it Coriander.
Thanks for watching :).
@@cigarinspector2023 That's wild. Yes, they are from the same plant. Could be something in that cigar (D4) that just doesn't work for you or simply the balance of the blend. Off the top of my head I can't tell you what the equivalent for me is, but there are some things I can't get on with no matter how many times I try; and popular things at that. Good videos. Especially interesting Dupont reviews. Thanks!
@@wwolf5670this is why I love the cigar community, we can disagree and it’s still cool :).
@@cigarinspector2023 Well put!
Hey Usman nice interesting review. Sorry you can't enjoy the D4s. Checkout my friends blog and channel 'Viva Enthusiast'
He actually did a comparison review of a D4vD5 and then seperately did the D4 with the other Robustos and then it seperately again as it performed differently from that but check he's stuff out just started up maybe good for u both todo some things along the line you guys got some similar view points on certain things
Taking a look now, thank you very much for the suggestion :).
It used to be dirt cheap: £5 in Geneva. It’s a very basic cigar. Cigar dealers are making huge profits on these by convincing novices it’s a good cigar. The E2 is the best Partagas, but they’ve made it unaffordable.
See that deep salt is what I like
It’s only a popular cigar if there’s no other cigars around to smoke.
I hear you man, monte Cristo 4 was a very sour cigar . It also had a soapy, burnt coffee gritty taste earthy vegetable taste .
Just smoked one, worst cigar I have ever had. Literally. Used to be good, cubans just aren't it any more at all.
Its not accurat. D4, 5 and 6 is the same cigar.
Not based on the info some people in the know have confirmed.
You didn't age yours long enough. That's all
Smoked plenty aged D4s too. Still don’t like it lol
@@cigarinspector2023 One more. Try one more with 5 years on it.
D5 and D6 are so much better than D4's and they have more strength and body
I think you smoke fake
I live in the UK, it's really difficult to buy fakes here. We have proper importers and highly reputable retailers.
It's virtually impossible to buy fake Cuban cigars from retailers.
Smoking it at this moment! Quiet pleasant experience! Leather, wood, toasted nuts-balanced. 91
