  • I'm back for part 2 of my "The Ordinary Shopping Guide" where I share a researched look at the products on the Ordinary. When I first used the website, I found it difficult and confusing to navigate. If you've experienced this, keep watching as I dissect the "Direct Acids" (Part 2): what you should buy, and what you should skip based on the ingredients and actives for these products. If you're interested in the Vitamins and Retinoids, hop over to part 1 (link below). My views are specifically for anti-aging so this is where it'll be most helpful. However, the general research I discuss will be helpful for other skin concerns like acne as well! OPEN FOR MORE+++

    The Ordinary 30% AHA + 2% BHA peeling solution is really good. I only use it once a week. I find 8 minuttes to be perfect for my skin. You have to be sure to wash it off properly, and only apply on dry skin 🤗

    I love the 30% aha and bha. It's actually one of the gentler high percentage acids I've used. I guess it's because of the Tasmanian pepper berry. Also use it on dry face not wet, otherwise it will burn!

    I love your approach to skin care and I am definitely a less is more proponent. However, I believe you have BHAs and AHA confused. According to dermatologists, BHAs being oil soluble attack the oil at the surface of the skin to help clean out pores and it is also an anti-inflammatory at the surface layer. AHAs penetrate deeper and cause deeper exfoliation and can help trigger collagen production, somewhat. Cheers!

    May I ask: if you’re using the alpha lipoic acid at what stage would you apply it? I assume after toning (I use alpha h liquid gold) and then do you continue with serums/moisturisers ? Or just leave the alpha lipoic acid as is??

  • @jcjccmz
    @jcjccmz 7 лет назад +2

    Thanks for all the research you did for these videos. FYI, hyperpigmentation can be tricky, and hydroquinone does not always work. There are prescription products with azelaic acid like Finacea which has 15% azelaic, which has worked great for me, while hydroquinone has done nothing. Also, azelaic acid helps keep skin clear of acne and is often prescribed for people with rosacea, so it is good for sensitive skin. As far as hydroquinone, my understanding is that it is super-harsh to skin and should be used only for limited times (like only if it's actually working). And in the video, you didn't say that you have actually tried Good Genes (or did I miss something?). I think the only way you can say whether something is a dupe is not just by comparing the actives on paper, but actually trying them over a period of time -- one side of face with one product, the other side with the 2nd product. I really loved Good Genes (and Luna) for over 2 years, but I started using organic cold-pressed rosehip seed oil and also prescription Tretinoin Gel Microspheres (Retin-A Micro) which meant I had to stop using those daily chemical exfoliants at night, and I don't really miss the S.Riley products at all. I might use them once every other week as a treatment if I decide to skip the Retin-A Micro. Oh, and thanks for not jumping on the anti-animal testing bandwagon. It can be a little annoying to hear these youtubers complain about cruelty to lab rats when they don't give a shit about actual human children in their own neighborhoods who are denied food, decent education or safety from abuse.

      I would love to try azelaic rx! I have heard really good things about that whereas this ordinary product has not really delivered so far. However, Rxs cost like $300 here in the US since it's not covered by insurance for cosmetic reasons!!! >.< I guess i will just conceal4lyf since i'm not sooo keen to shell out so much on a 'maybe!' hehe
      i agree that they're not dupes. i have only tried a tester of Good Genes and didn't find the results good enough to merit the spendiness! was hoping the Ordinary's product would be a good alternative, but nope, it itches me :(. So, i'm sticking with my occasional use of just good ol' Alpha Hydrox 10% glycolic gel. I use both my retin-A and glycolic (not on the same nights! i'll do the glycolic 1-2x a week and retin A the rest of the time).

    Since you are still young (and hopefully never smoked!) peels are not as necessary. I’m of an age where they are! About 5 years ago I started doing TCA peels with my sister (since I went to hair school and got my license my sister thought I could follow directions. I can! ) We got our peels from Makeup Artists Choice (MUAC) . They are very affordable. I use their lactic acid peels prior to a winter TCA peel. Then I use the lactic acid peels in the summer (but not as much as the winter). Peels are great for acne scars, fine wrinkles and textured skin. My sister smoked (I didn’t) so they really made a huge difference on her smokers wrinkles. As with all peels I’ve started low and worked my way up. MUAC retinals are stronger than anything else I’ve tried in the affordable range.

    Love! Great buying guide. I felt that when I first was introduced to the brand I felt lost and had to do a lot of research. I am sure this will help a lot of people looking into the brand. Btw, did you know it's cheaper to buy these products in Canada? They have the same price as US. So $6.90 is 6.90 cad and 6.90 usd.

    I think you are a very articulate young woman!!! I use the ordinary hyloronic acid, matrixal and the advanced retinoid 2%. I tried the vitamin C and just couldn't get passed the grit, it did sting a bit but that was tolerable. I ended up tossing it in the trash. By the way I'm a 57 year old woman and should have started this a very long time ago but, we didn't have this kind of stuff when I was a young sun worshiper. Thank you for all your useful information as it's helped me decide what else I'm going to buy from the ordinary.

      the natural moisturizing factors for a straight forward moisturizer! for an acne treatment with the sensitive skin, it may be worthwhile trying their advanced retinoid (since this is supposed to have the effects of retinoic acid while being very gentle). i would skip a lot of the other stuff b/c you have sensitive skin, and honestly less is more sometimes! i have also always liked benzoyl peroxide for acne treatment (i use the one from neutrogena on-the-spot which is a gentle 2.5% concentration but when i was younger with a lot more acne, this really worked for me). finally, it could be worth trying one of the oils. for dry skin, i'd opt for marula or argan.

    • @sams517
      @sams517 7 лет назад

      Joanna's Logic vs Luxury does benzoyl peroxide do anything to reduce the appearance of pores?

    • @LogicvsLuxury
      @LogicvsLuxury  7 лет назад +1

      @Sam S yes! It does reduce the appearance though not the actual pore size. BP kills bacteria and dries out the pores to help unclog them so they are less visible.

    • @sams517
      @sams517 7 лет назад

      Joanna's Logic vs Luxury thanks! So if I get one of those spot treatment products from the drugstore high in BP, would it help reduce the appearance of pores if I pat it in on my large pores (like a primer)? I don't really break out right on those huge pores but they are huge and I wanna reduce them lol.

    I tried loads of AHA and salicylic acid products, even the really sting 30% AHA 2%BHA solution as well as retinol. Nothing shifts my blackheads. Nothing. They don't care they just sit there laughing at me. I left the peeling solution on longer than directed and still... nothing.

    • @fanfox40
      @fanfox40 5 лет назад +1

      Ann Nee try Cosrx Blackhead Powerhouse liquid. Gentle Korean brand. So gentle yet cleared all my pores out completely on my nose!! Was shocked as mine have been tough to shift! Lol That along with the ordinary niacinamide and the 5% lactic acid has completely changed my skin 🤗🤗🤗

  • @MattbyNature
    @MattbyNature 7 лет назад

    As far as the salicylic acid is concerned: I would go with the ones by Paula's Choice. They're less expensive by the ounce, usually contain other beneficial ingredients and come in many different textures. Their BHA liquid is basically what rid my skin of blackheads - now I'm using their BHA spray as it's the most cost effective version they offer.

    Nice video! I just wanted to say there is apparently a fragrance added to The Ordinary's 7% Glycol Toner according a beautypedia.com review (Paula's Choice). They seem to have a personal issue with The Ordinary's products so pay no mind to the actual reviews in my opinion.

    • @LogicvsLuxury
      @LogicvsLuxury  7 лет назад +8

      Ohh good information! And yes, sometimes Paula's Choice is a little snarky (a lot snarky). i mean they're not exactly the most unbiased source of information ;) thanks for sharing!!

    • @jcjccmz
      @jcjccmz 7 лет назад +5

      Tina Hu I agree with Joanne that Beautypedia can be quite biased. It has a built-in incentive to trash important competitors' products and recommend its own products as a less expensive alternative, as if it is a nonprofit organization. I have observed that their strategy appears to involve often (not always) trashing their competitors with the highest prices so that their own products, which are NOT cheap bargains, appear to be fantastic deals in comparison. They try to appear objective and unbiased by: 1. claiming what they say is based on scientific research (but they don't apply these findings in a consistent, uniform manner to every company's products), 2. rating highly a number of products in each category, but usually those with cheap, drugstore pricepoints that will not appeal to Paula's Choice target customers, and 3. writing about a few decent products in each brand's line. I usually find inconsistencies in the way they apply the scientific research and also notice they can have imbalanced, knee-jerk reactions to certain ingredients in products (like they found the ONE excuse to trash something).

    • @TC-gc5rt

    • @TC-gc5rt
      @TC-gc5rt 7 лет назад +3

      Nunya Bizness I completely agree with you. It is a complete turn off on Paula's Choice for me. I think it is bad business practice to outwardly attack The Ordinary line--or any line for that matter. There appears to be a personal attack on The Ordinary--odd and completely unprofessional in my opinion.

    You probably are too young for acids lol your skin doesn't need it...plus they do itch, tingle or even burn if you use the wrong percentage or are just too sensitive. You have to work slowly with alot of these actives and over time.

  • @allysblondeworld
    @allysblondeworld 6 лет назад +5

    unfortunately I really do not like this video. its very confusing. like your advice is always like "meh" like not yes neither no. like first you said you would skip it, but then admit that you bought it? hm... weird. I prefer authentic reviews and not this format of "buying guide".

  • @lizmarchand3520
    @lizmarchand3520 7 лет назад +19

    So you are recommending or dismissing these products by "research" and not by actually trying the products yourself? You are basing this review on your "opinion" and not actual evidence that it did not work or worked on your skin type. So this is not an actual review its more a personal opinion based which renders it invalid. This is the first thumbs down I have ever given a video on youtube.

    • @LogicvsLuxury
      @LogicvsLuxury  7 лет назад +13

      Nope this isn't "opinion". Scientific studies and published papers aren't opinion. But if you're happy to spend your money on all the products in this line (in the case of these acids, that'd be really quite intense) without any scientific backing,, I certainly can't stop you.

    • @lizmarchand3520
      @lizmarchand3520 7 лет назад +6

      I am not talking about the peer reviewed studies that I am guessing you are alluding to that you have done your research on. What I am referencing to is that your video is based on your "opinions" about the products without actually testing them on your skin. I have used acids for years at actual dermatologists office. You just dismiss or like products based on what ever articles you have read.

    • @LogicvsLuxury
      @LogicvsLuxury  7 лет назад +9

      I'm "dismissing" the need to buy a 5% LA AND a 10% LA AND a 7% GLYCOLIC and a 30% AHA+BHA AND...etc. etc. for no need whatsoever. No where do i dismiss how well these products work and I state throughout that you should use one or two of these, and make the choice which one is right for you based on your skin needs (gentler vs. harsher) while presenting the facts about what these compounds are and do. And actually on the point about the lactic acids, i actually did give my own 'review' (based on experience of the product where i found it itchy and irritating) but that's just my experience which i'm pretty clear about in the video (it seems like you missed this??). it still may work great for others which i also clearly state. As far as Azelaic goes--i actually also gave a review on this (against the stated point of my video, but yes, I did buy this and decided it was not necessary and the formulation wasn't per the research recs). And as far as the Alpha Lipoic Acid goes--this is a pass based on the research for anti-wrinkling (not related to the anti-oxidant properties which i talk about as being a potential worthy buy for certain folks)-or LACK thereof outside of the ones from Dr. Perricone who has clearly vested interests. I haven't seen other peer reviewed studies on the benefits of this one.

    • @LogicvsLuxury
