Marula Oil | The Ordinary vs. Drunk Elephant

  • I’m comparing the Marula Oil from Drunk Elephant and The Ordinary! Since Marula has been one of my favourite oils, there will be gushing. That aside, this review is about what I find the differences to be other than that chasm that separates the prices. Not all oils are the same, so much of what makes an oil better quality has to do with the processes, the way it’s farmed, conventional vs. wildcrafted vs. organic etc. The same oil can be of different qualities from brand to brand, though it’s harder to compare that without the right information. It can be complicated. Enjoy my review!

    As a graphic designer, the Ordinary's "less is more" approach is VERY aesthetically pleasing and more attractive in my opinion. Coupled with the price? It's even more beautiful.

    No wonder that Ordinary has so much haters in the beauty world who are trying to stop them. If the difference in price was 2x - i might fall for the special packaging and this extra something in the way they get the oil. 7x is just a no. I am ready to pay this amount for something different (same promise - different ingredients like Niod vs Ordinary). But ingredient is the same here. Btw I was shocked discovering that original Moroccan Oil doesn't have much argan oil in but more drugstore fillers. Yet, it is also 7x the price of the Ordinary's Moroccan argan oil.

  • @katie4623
    @katie4623 6 лет назад +237

    Based on this review it sounds like there's no reason to pay seven times more for drunk elephant unless the extra cost means absolutely nothing to you.

      now i havent tried either oil, but i know for me personally i absolutely HATE the feeling of oil on my face or any sort of heaviness on my face. for example, even though i love makeup and i think its a beautiful form of art, and id love to do extravagant and heavy looks, i literally cant even wear BB cream or eyeshadow because i cant stand the feeling of it on my skin. in the winter i have very dry skin and the only affordable product that works for me is jojoba oil, since it has a very small molecular weight and soaks in nicely. if i could afford the drunk elephant oil, depending on just how much heavier the ordinary oil feels, i would definitely buy it. maybe one day😂😂 anyways i just though id put in my two cents on why people might pay the extra cost, in my case its really just skin sensitivity, but i definitely agree that some other people are probably just buying it for the brand name.

    Great video series-- so detailed and informative. I discovered Marula Oil in Namibia, from a women's coop where it was harvested and pressed. It was unfiltered, a beautiful golden color with a slightly nutty fragrance with a tiny hint of cocoa. It was the ONLY thing that could protect skin in the Namib desert, one of the driest spots on earth. It both penetrated to replenish and left a teeny bit on the surface of skin to help stop evaporation from the skin. I have also purchased Marula Oil in Botswana, which was similar but not quite as intense in color or aroma. I have not tried DE Marula (though I would like to!) but I have purchased TO and several of the other brands you mentioned. All seem to me to be filtered-- clear or nearly clear with zero to very little fragrance. Of course personal preferences vary, related to your skin type and/or whether you like the natural fragrance, and to how you are going to use it...but if you ever get a chance to try the unfiltered oil, do it! I would love to get my hands on a supply of the unfiltered oil of the type I purchased in Africa, but I have not been able to find it in the US. It is the probably best body oil in the world!

    Awesome video! After I bought the drunk elephant oil I did some research on Marula oil and was looking into why their's cost so much! Since that is the star ingredient in the product I just had to find out more about Marula oil myself. I think you hit the nail on the head it is just the feel and longevity of the product based on the extraction process. I will definitely try The Ordinary and see if I end up liking it just as much. Sometimes you just can't help it, if a product works for you and you see results it is hard not to buy it no matter what it costs. Thank you for the dupe!! Love your videos!

    I'm currently using The Ordinary's Marula Oil and I find that my skin looks more plump and smooth if I were to use it on its own after serum before my moisturiser. Mixing it with my moisturiser doesn't work as good as when I use it on its own, but somehow accelerates the absorption of moisturiser. I find it to be also a good enough moisutriser prior to my moisturising sunscreen after toner and serum for my combo dry sensitive skin. ^_^

    This was so helpful and informative! Your thorough and detailed perspective is really useful. One point I would counter is that acne-prone skin types should be cautious with marula oil. I have pretty fierce hormonal acne, and DE's marula oil has actually been invaluable to me! The antimicrobial and soothing effects combined with the rest of my regimen has made a huge improvement. I don't find it affects the oiliness of my skin one way or another; my skin is just softer, more even, and more hydrated. I love this product. (Can't speak to Ordinary as I haven't tried it.)

    I love how in depth your explanation is on each product you show in your videos. Your channel is what helped me build my skin care from using dove soap and nivea lotion, sad I know, to a more grown up skin care regimen. You may want to start stamping your RUclips channel name on your videos. I've seen your videos on several sites, if I didn't already follow you I would never know how to find you. Just a little suggestion.....

    Renee, another informative and lovely video from you. I get so excited when I see you in my inbox and rush right away to see what you have to tell me. I've been using the Rose Hip Oil from The Ordinary, and I've definitely felt a difference in the softness of my skin. It does, however, sit on my skin until I apply my moisturizer. I like that the Marula Oil absorbs right in. Wondering if one is better for Rosacea? I've done some research , but nothing so far. Do you know? Thanks Renee!

    Hi Renée, I happened to watch Dr Dray's review on the DE's products yesterday and her more nuanced opinion on Marula oil was interesting too. I still have to try it out and find out if it works for me 😊 Thanks for reviewing both brands ❤️

    have you ever tried grape seed oil? cold pressed oils are usually more 'greasy' like you said. i think it's because the oil does not go through any chemical bleaching or processing. compare rose hip oils to cold pressed rose hip oils, the cold pressed ones are thicker and darker. in my opinion, if you want to use an oil based on its specific benefits (fading scars, etc) buy cold pressed.

    I've used the Drunk Elephant one for a while but I don't feel like it sinks into my skin as much as you mentioned in the video, but it's definitely more moisturizing than other oils I've used. Great review as usual!

    I love the ordinary's marula oil! It is so inexpensive and I feel like it made my hair stronger than ever and also feels great on my face, a little bit greasy though and that's why I use it at night. Thanks to my sisters I learned about all this amazing skincare and thanks to my twin sister I got to know about your channel! So informative!

    Thank you Renee! This video definitely helps me to feel more informed. I have been sitting on the fence for months now, not quite ready to pull the trigger on the drunk elephant, but unsure if the ordinary is just as good in performance. With a sigh of relief I can confidently, finally make my purchase :) xo's

    Based on the research I have seen, Marula Oil is high in oleic acid and low in linoleic acid, which is much better for dry skin and skin that does not tend to break out. Apparently oily, acne-prone skin is low in linoleic acid, so using oils that are high in linoleic acid helps balance the skin. There are websites that list which oils have high %s of linoleic and oleic acids.

      @Shayri01 7 лет назад +1

      jcjccmz Can you name those websites please? I've been trying to find the oil composition, or at least the linoleic acid content of many oils but I couldn't find a dedicated website. Please help me out

      Shayri Garg Sure thing! Here is a really helpful one: www.minimalistbeauty.com/oils-specifically-for-acne-prone-skin/ . And here's one with lots of info on Marula oil (comparing it with Argan oil): thebestorganicskincare.com/marula-oil-vs-argan-oil-which-is-better-for-your-skin. i have sensitive, oily skin that is acne-prone and also starting show fine lines, and I have really enjoyed rosehip seed oil.
