  • Hi guys! Today I'm sharing a researched look at the products on the Ordinary. When I first used the website, I found it difficult and confusing to navigate. If you've experienced this, keep watching as I dissect the "VITAMINS AND RETINOIDS" (Part 1): what you should buy, and what you should skip based on the ingredients and actives for these products. My views are specifically for anti-aging so this is where it'll be most helpful. However, the general research I discuss will be helpful for other skin concerns like acne as well! OPEN FOR MORE+++

    your videos are SO well thought out - i'm in my mid-twenties so I'm JUST starting to think about anti-aging and stuff while not wanting to break the bank. And while other reviews are fine, I'd really rather know the research behind why certain things work, not just that they do. This was REALLY helpful and, again, so well thought out. Thank you!

    Subscribed for this series, cannot wait to binge your others. Finally, someone else who's passionate about skincare, chemistry, & the science behind the two combinations on our individual bodies! Appreciate the research, the time it took to gather all of these products, their ingredients, & their purported value. I haven't tried this brand yet, actually I'm looking to create a skincare routine that's affordable & accessible. I've only washed & used moisturizer for the last 38+ years, now I recognize the need to build on, for my normal skin with scarring from DV, photogenic, & the lovely aging experience!
    Thank you for sharing & have a great day today!

      Oh! that's really good to know! I'm currently using a subscription service I talk about in my just-uploaded evening routine video, but it's definitely a bit more pricy than differin from the drugstore! how long do you think your differin tube lasts?

      Wish I had kept track better but I bought the 0.5 tube in January and replaced it with the bigger tube at the end of April. Only applied it every other night until February and now use it every night. My skin tone is much improved and fine lines are gone and my skin looks healthier, a few deeper wrinkles remain but it should work well for your skin concerns. Thanks to your buying guide I will be purchasing Buffet next. Thank you again!

    1. Retinol is NOT a derivative of the steroid hormone Retinoic Acid, it is the precursor! Retinoic Acid is a metabolite of Retinol when catalyzed by enzyme Aldehyde Dehydrogenase (ALDH1A2).
    2. Skin cells DOES have a Retinol receptor in the form of STRA6, which is how Retinol is converted into other Retinoids, among other things.

    • @LogicvsLuxury
      @LogicvsLuxury  7 лет назад +1

      thanks for the clarification! the end result is the same though, right? retinol is not as effective as retinoic acid? will definitely include this in any future vids on the topic.

    • @WillerRemyMa
      @WillerRemyMa 7 лет назад +2

      Yes, being a steroid hormone, Retinoic Acid stimulates the expression of many different genes in the cell. I really should look further into which genes and mechanisms is at play here (in terms of skin cells and cosmetic use). Quite interesting!

    Okay, I can advise you on Deciem's Advanced Retinoid 2%. It is not a replacement for Tretinoin. I stopped using my Tretinoin 0.05% for a bit and started to have skin problems. Since I could never adjust my Tret past 3 days, I decided to give this a try. It is not the same. I felt it worked slower and did not see the same results as the Tret. However, I ended up using it on my off days of Tret to keep up the effects of that. So Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday I use my Tret (the max for my skin after a year). Then on Tuesday and Thursday I use the Deciem. My skin is happy with this and I am having great results. You will still have peeling in the beginning but not as bad as using the Tret days in a row. It is very minor. This is just my opinion! Also I agree with you 100% on your research with the Vitamin C. On Deceim's site I did buy their Hymalide's version of Vitamin C. It is an ethylated abscorbic acid that you can get all the benefits without the negatives. I LOVE IT. Otherwise I would just keep on making my own.

    • @LogicvsLuxury
      @LogicvsLuxury  7 лет назад

      oooh that's a really good suggestion for both how you use the advanced ret and the pricier deciem vitamin c! i think i'll be adding that pricier vit c to my basket next time :)

    • @LogicvsLuxury
      @LogicvsLuxury  6 лет назад

      I started off and on using some form of retinol in my late twenties. Dabbled in proper retin-A but never had a good experience with it (very difficult for my skin to adjust, peeling, redness, etc.). Recently for the last year+ have been very consistently using retin-A from curology. i talk about this a lot in my first evening skincare video and i love it.

    Niacinimide has been my skin savior. I would never be without it. I have acne prone oily skin and this has made such a difference. More so than any other products that had niacinimide in them. I'm curious how Paula's choice uses the vitamin C derivative when you are not supposed to use vitamin C and niacinimide together because it messes up the potency. Great video! Love the ordinary products so much!

    • @LogicvsLuxury
      @LogicvsLuxury  7 лет назад +1

      hey there! yes, the paula's choice does use a derivative of vit-c, but it's actually only the ascorbic acid form that has the cancelling effect with niacinamide so it's ok to use the ascorbyl glucoside (perhaps even better to use it) with a niacinamide! great to hear your skin's been having such great results :)

    The only question I have is the use of Vitamin C with Niacinamide. The Ordinary's regimen guide recommends against combining the two?

    • @LogicvsLuxury
      @LogicvsLuxury  7 лет назад

      hello! you're welcome! there are diff forms of vitamin c. the form that is recommended against using with niacinamide is pure l-ascorbic acid. the other forms, like ascorbyl glucoside, have shown positive benefits used in conjunction w/ niacinamide. that being said, there is also countering evidence suggesting using any form of vit c with niacinamide is not a big deal. i personally don't use L-AA together at the same time as niacinamide (or only w/ products w/ very low % of niacinamide)

    I bought the retinoid 2% works great for me - I have semi-sensitive skin and it didn’t bother me at all. After I put it on my skin has a healthy glow and looks good the next day (I only use at night). I saw a review of the 1% retinoid - I thought it’d be more gentle because it’s a lower percentage but the reviewer I watched on youtube had a bad reaction to it - the test spot she put it on was dry, red, and welting. I’m not sure if that’s just due to her skin type or if the 1% is just a worse product.

    • @chellecopley67
      @chellecopley67 7 лет назад +2

    hi joanna ! the important advice for ur fans = retin A should not be used in sunlight -- ala cancer ! hence use it only at night . i used to work for Janssen -Cilag (a subsidiary of JOHNSON-JOHNSON). Because i was involved in the "selling" of Retin A - essentially to doctors and specialists -- i was privy to inside information showing amazing before/after pics of its amazing anti-aging properties -- but the company chose not to market as an anti aging product since the product requires responsible and judicious use - a pea size amount only and its tendency to initial skin irritations and also photo-sensitivity. This was circa 1985 . i am still using it today! i am now 57 and my wife is 33 ! i have also discovered three amazing products -argon oil ,cactus oil and rose oil -all moroccon - (my wife is moroccon )most of the commercial versions are fakes including moroccon brands so beware . to get the real argan or rose oil u need to go to berber city -called AGADIR where u actually get to see berber women grinding the seeds in ur presence!Should u wish to try i can probably organise samples of the real thing for u ! i usually use Retin-A in conjunction with these two oils add real olive oil - also from morocco - outskirts of marrakesh and they pack a wallop! also the rare cactus oil is also amazing!footnote- most olive oils sold in USA if tested by the FDA probably would not pass as olive oil - especially from Europe.

    Jo I'm a designer and as you yourself said, the website is not easy to navigate and it's true. It's designed on purpose that way. It means to show off how beautiful and minimalistic it is, not to explain things to you.
    The first thing that I see when I click it is the word Ordinary. Second is the awards from popular magazines (large in size and on top of page! like, ALL of their products got awards? and they are all beauty awards from commercial magazines, which clashes with their motto "Clinical formulations with integrity"). Then I'm lost in the small sub-menus and nothing helps me to decide what I need to do. All sub-menus have an emphasis on social media feed, and no decorations or images. Emphasizes on cruelty-free, vegan, no gluten but what about parabens, SLES & SLS, silicones, phthalates?! By law in Europe at least all things contained must be stated in a complete, official list and not a tick or x bulletin, so that any "omission" puts them in a legal bind.
    That, and the fact that so many magazines gave awards which are by no way scientific or medical or even accurate-in most cases they generalize and follow trends- while the products themselves all have their scientific name- not very keen on simple language, AND the fact that youtube is full of those videos tells me that it's just a marketing campaign, a hype similar for example to the Bio-oil frenzy years ago. That is my personal opinion of course!

    Hi Joanna! Thanks for the comprehensive guide to anti-aging products from the Ordinary. While I am skeptical of topical applications of many of the serums and potions often advertised I am a skincare junkie myself. My skincare routine includes Chang Sheng Herbal Rejuvenating Beauty Soap, NeoStrata Bionic Face Cream PHA 12, Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Cream Night With Retinol, Nivea moisturizer, Aveeno mouisturizer and sunscreen, but perhaps my favorite anti-aging tool is the Bioptron light. The latter worked wonders in improving the appearance of my skin over the last 3 months. You need light therapy for a complete anti-aging routine IMO! Could you post links to the studies you cited in the video? I'll be interested in taking a look at them. Thanks!

      Hi Joanna! My mother in law, whose in her 50's has been using this light for 15 years and she has superb skin. Whilst I tried using this light in my early 20's I didn't observe any benefits. However, last year I gave it a go again and it worked remarkably well (I am 29 now). You see, I've been living in the high desert in California for some three years now and noticed my skin had become really dull and dry and after just one use I actually felt a difference in my skin. The best I can describe it is like after coming out of the ocean, specially if the ocean water is kind of cold-ish, my skin felt tight and smoother. There is some scientific evidence that full spectrum LEDs do help with photoaging. You can check it out here: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22804869.
      There are a variety of LED products on the market. Notably, Bioptron, Tria blue light for acne, Nuface, etc. They all correlate to your statement regarding the discovery that acne treatments also have skin rejuvenating effects.
      For anti-aging what you're really looking for is good cell turnover (retinols/Vitamin A derivatives/Alpha hydroxy acids, glycolic acid, etc), retention of good skin elasticity (collagen boosters/face yoga/facial massage), and avoiding hyperpigmentation with use of sunblocks and if you do have hyperpigmentation using bleaching products. Everything else in my opinion are simply silicones that mask the appearance of fine lines, etc.
      The real key to anti-aging is being happy, living a moderately active lifestyle paired with healthy eating habits devoid of simple sugars!
      Have a good day!

      Hehe, yes. Definitely something to get into the older we get. Anyway, this whole aging video got me thinking about stem cells and degenerative diseases. There are few publicly traded biotech companies working on fixing degenerative diseases (vision and knees) using stemcells: BTX and CBMG. CBMG is conducting research in China following FDA guidelines so that when stemcells are legalized in the U.S they're ready to go. Better to feel good then look good in our older years after all. Have a great weekend!

    I have the retinol 2% I plan on using it and then purchasing the Paula's choice retinol. My question is....what should I layer on before or after the retinol? (Combination oily skin)

    • @LogicvsLuxury
      @LogicvsLuxury  7 лет назад

      hi Kay Kay! depends on your skincare routine and the formula of your retin-A (i.e., is your retin-A liquidy or more like a cream) and what other super actives you are using. you can check out my skincare routine vids to see one way i layer in the evening.
      my rule of thumb:
      1) use actives first on clean bare skin.
      2) wait
      3) then use in order of lightest to heaviest (liquid to occlusive creams)
      * if you have many actives, use those first in order of lightest to heaviest; if you're worried about order, you can always give more time between products.

      Hi
      Hope you have found something by now but if not have a look at Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA from the Ordinary or L Ascorbic Acid powder. Or Ascorbic Acid + Alpha Arbutin. I have read all the reviews on their website plus other resellers' websites and i think they have very positive feedback on post inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

    Do you happen to know if Timeless has ascorbic acid vit C? And therefore should not be applied same time as product with niacinamide?

    • @LogicvsLuxury
      @LogicvsLuxury  7 лет назад

      Hi Lisa! Yes the Timeless uses ascorbic acid for their vitamin C. That's why it's unstable and goes bad after 3months or so (if regularly exposed to light.. you can save it if you put it in the fridge or something). I know there's mixed info on there about niacinamide and ascorbic acid, but i've had professionals tell me these should not go together so i avoid mixing the two in the same part of my routine.

  • @stephaniebuzzella1
    @stephaniebuzzella1 6 лет назад

    Possibly applying the absorbic acid/vit c suspension over wet skin would allow the product to activate while it absorbs? Does that make sense?

    • @stephaniebuzzella1
      @stephaniebuzzella1 6 лет назад

      Also, on the deciem site i also read that niacinamide is contraindicated for people who also use a vit c product. Maybe because one increases the other at a rate that could be irritating, similar to how grapefruit juice can increase the effects of some medications? Just thinking out loud. Let me know what you think.

    how do you get prescription retin a, is there a reason you have to have in order to be prescribed it?

    • @LogicvsLuxury
      @LogicvsLuxury  6 лет назад

      You can get an RX from your primary care physician or a derm. Generally this is prescribed for younger people as an acne treatment. most US insurance plans cover it if you're under 25 and its use is for acne. you can also ask it from your Dr. for anti-aging however this is generally NOT covered by insurance and thus out of pocket in the US this is usually >$100 (it's absurd since it's a generic drug and costs about $5 in other countries where it's not so controlled. Hence, i think curolgy is an awesome product/service!)

Perfect!

    Canada doesn't need a prescription for retin A. You can actually buy 3 tubes for 50.00 from their sites. I do mention about it in my videos but i don't want to promote it just in case someone hurts themselves. There's a site were I buy mine from here as well without prescription. Not sure how they get away with it but I've been buying and using it for years. it's the exact thing my dr was giving me for way more money. I'm to scared to buy it over seas. lol

    Very helpful video! However, I almost wish you would have just taken each section and described each product with the sections on the site. For example, the first section is Retinoids. The products listed are Granactive Retinoid 2% in Squalane, Granactive Retinoid 5% in Squalane, Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion (Previously Advanced Retinoid 2%), Retinol 0.2% in Squalane, Retinol 0.5% in Squalane, Retinol 1% in Squalane, Retinol 1%. Yes you went over retinol and retinoids in general, but I would have liked each product described and the purpose. Thank you!

    • @LogicvsLuxury

      I would say if you're only getting one, stick with retinol. the major study for matrixyl was in 2013 and i haven't found anything replicated whereas vitamin a has a long history of studies. like i said in my video though, i'd opt for other OTC retinols vs. the ordinary one b/c they pack more for the punch and aren't a lot more expensive. i really do like the CeraVe product in particular. that being said, i am interested enough in matrixyl to add it to my regimen (haven't yet). i believe several La Prairie products have it... anyhoo, vitamin A for the win!

      The Ordinary has milder vitamin C options, which might still be effective (more pricey, but fixing skin can be even more costly after a harsh treatment). The 23% one is certainly too harsh, didn't work well for my mom and my friend either, so avoid it if your skin is feeling funky.

      Everybody has different issues with their skin and different reactions. Most of us get a handful of products to try. Some of the results are immediate such as some of the acids and some take months of use to see a difference. Also piling on products makes it hard to know what is working.
