    I used cheap braided line, honestly, I saw no difference. Used 50lb braid with 80lb mono leader line on a popper and got a 18lb GT on my second day. I’m sure power pro is stronger but with my type of fishing in Hawaii, everyone goes 50+ when prob only 30lb is needed. I usually buy high quality mono and whatever cheap braid for my mainline. Works just fine.

    Ive tried a bunch of the cheap stuff and never had an issue. Pulled in some big tuna, sharks, halibut, barracuda and so on. If its fresh, your knots are good, you dont simply horse in your fish and use your drag it all works.

    I use it for making bow strings for my 40 & 45lb recurve bows at about $5 a string compared to the normal $25 - $30 archery stores charge, and haven't had on break yet! I normally make 12 to 14 strand continuous loop strings with 60 - 100 lb braided test fishing string.

      My biggest concern is abrasion resistance.
      Do you fish for shark from the beach?
      Have you had problems with the line braking?
      How often do you replace it?

    Good test if you plan on vertical jigging for barbells. You’re not taking rod flex or reel drag into consideration. Almost never will you subject line to a 15 pound straight pull in real life fishing unless you’re hoisting big fish up onto a pier or something equally dumb. I’ve used this line and it’s performed just fine for me. But then, I let the rod and my drag do the heavy work.

    • @KayakhacksFishing
      @KayakhacksFishing  4 года назад

      Yes, setting the drag properly will allow any line to work. That is how they catch fish weighing 100s of pounds on light tackle.

    I love that you introduced the knot variable. So many people make posts that whatever brand 30lb braid snapped lifting 10lb's of weights. I suspect most of them attached with horrible self defeating knots (probably slipped rather than breaking). I must admit my braid experience has been fishing for large mouth bass and my biggest issue with it was that it WONT break. You will break a rod before snapping off 20lb Stren. Of course I always used a mono leader, but if that braid ever made it into the snag you were done. Or heaven forbid had a backlash (can happen to the best of us at times).

    This is my experience with UHMWPE, Dyneema/Spectra braided lines.
    As a background, I led a team of expert kite builders and we broke the Guinness World Record in 2014. One of the team members is a kite wholesaler and also sells bulk braided lines, mostly Innotex Spectra and Dacron. We spent 1 week each year over a 9 year period flying a 12 sq. metre kite to high altitude fro a remote region in Australia. This culminated in us reaching 16,009 ft above the altitude of the launch point. initially used 200 lb Spectra 900 in 2004 but switched to Dyneema in 2005To reach that altitude we used 12,400 metres of UHMWPE line. The line we used for the record flight was 6,000 metres of SK75 300 lb Dyneema and 6,200 metres of SK78 350 lb . Dyneema. The 300 lb SK75 Dyneema was purchased from Amika in Taiwan with Dyneema fibres made by Toyoba in Japan. This Japanese company was one of three licenced by DSM Dyneema in Holland to use the patented gel spinning pultrusion process to manufacture these fibers. The other was Honeywell in the USA who sold the licence to Allied Signals in the USA. This version of micro fibre is called Spectra. The US braiding companies still purchase the fibre, as far as I am aware, from Allied Signals. I have purchased and been sponsored with large quantities of line over the years of my record attempts. The following are the lines I have used or still have in storage and I'll go over the structure of braided lines, testing, knots and splices.
    The reason I mention the 3 sources of legitimate UHMWPE fibre is that it is very unlikely that Chinese manufacturers of braided line will use the more expensive but higher quality fibre. They are mostly lying con men (or women) in my experience. There may be some genuine manufactures but seem hard to find IMO. I will also go into some detail about Chinese manufacturers and the efforts DSM Dyneema has made to take the counterfeiters to court.
    Spectra 900, 200 lbs, 8 weave, 11,000 metres, 0.8mm diameter, 4% stretch (line manufacturers use some different terms for the fibre bundles such as weaves and carriers but they mean bundles of microfibres that are braided into completed lines. Spectra is a brand name for fibres used to manufacture ropes, cords and line. The manufacturing process was invented by DSM Dyneema of Holland. They licenced two major companies to use the process. Toyobo in Japan and Honeywell in the USA. The licence was sold to Allied Signals in the USA and the brand remained Spectra. The differences between Dyneema and Spectra are not great apart from the occasion leap frogging in specs. such as Dyneema SK60, SK71, SK75, SK77 and Spectra 900, 1000 etc, etc. There are enthusiast that talk absolute non-sense about the superiority of Spectra over Dyneema. I found Spectra was generally more expensive when sourcing large quantities. I believe I write with some good experience after accumulating over 65,000 metres of braided lines including samples of all the ebay Chinese lines. Most are rubbish but I found two brands out of 15 that actually had a breaking strength equal to or exceeding their claims.
    Dyneema SK 75,, 300 lb, 8 weave, 12,000 metres, 0.75 mm. Amika Taiwan, Fibres, Toyobo Japan
    Dyneema SK 78, 100 lb , 8 weave, 6,200 metres, 0.5 mm,, 180 lb 0.62 mm, 8 weave, 6,400 metres. 250 lb 8 weave, 0.72 mm, 6,200 metres, 350 lb, 8 weave, 0.83 mm, 6,400 metres. 559 lb 0.95 mm diameter. 8 weave, 6,400 metres all MFG by Cousin-Trestec, France.and fibres supplied under sponsorship DSM Dyneema Holland. These lines were worth approximately $15,000 retail.
    All of these genuine Spectra and Dyneema lines broke within 2% of the stated strength and mostly exceeded the stated breaking strength.
    Prior to 2004 or was doing a lot of testing of smaller kites at low altitudes that is, under 3,000 ft. I was investigating. testing and eliminating line types. which were mainly various monofilament nylons and dacron, One common theme was that knots, no matter how good, always weaken line to some degree. I use Daho splicing needles to join lines and I have so much practice that i can do a splice in less than 30 seconds. Splices maintain minimum 190%+ of line strength because they are double line thickness.
    No matter how good lines are, they eventually need replacement due to abrasion and UV exposure. Even so the Toyobo/Amika Dyneema has only lost 3% of it's strength after 14 years.
    In 2015 I Purchased 20,000 metres of Jeely (China) Ultra High Molecular Weight PolyEthylene (UHMWPE) line. I should have requested a sample but I purchased 20,000 metres of line for $1,500 sight unseen. I should have known better but I hadn't purchased a great deal of stuff from China and no line before. It tested consistently at 160 lb. I gave the line away to my Kite shop team member to make line sets for kids kites. The company owner was very defensive and denied any wrong doing and said my test methods must have been flawed. I have a hydraulic test gauge made by an engineer in the USA. It is accurate to better than 1%. On ebay I have messaged several sellers of line that they advertised as Spectra Dyneema. I pointed out that it is impossible for a product to both Spectra and Dyneema simultaneously. I got a reply from one promising to remove that claim. The others apparently don't give a s..t. DSM Dyneema had some success in China taking some manufacturers to Chinese court but it's like putting up and umbrella against a tidal wave. I save buyer beware and if you pay peanuts you are going to get rubbish. ohsonline.com/articles/2009/07/28/dyneema-files-ip-case.aspx www.ibinews.com/home/dsm-dyneema-files-patent-lawsuit/7610.article pubs.acs.org/cen/news/84/i04/8404DSM.html www.dsm.com/products/dyneema/en_US/about/press-releases/press-releases-2017/DSM-Dyneema-wins-significant-patent-case-in-Israel.html
    I have three expert advisors, Kees Van Luijk, owner of Tasline in New Zealand, Go Matsuoka, manager of Toyobo Japan's IZANAS fibre manufacture and John Kiker, owner of Twinline in the USA. I am learning from these experts constantly but there is one clear principle that anyone can understand. You get what you pay for and if you pay low prices you get low quality generally speaking unless you are a very astute buyer of high quality bargains. I have observed that fishing enthusiasts are often suckers for a catchy name and nice pretty packaging with pictures of big fish on them. The Chinese manufactures know the gullible will fall for suggestive titles, fakes and very low prices. I fell for a bargain 10,000 metres of 200 lb line in 2013. I didn't follow my own advice. Get a sample first, test it, check it out. $1500 down the drain. The company owner couldn't give a s--t and just denied everything. Most people may not see the difference between 200 and 160 lb because they may be only putting 100 lb stress on the line. I have an accurate hydraulic test rig that can test up to 600 lb. within 1% accuracy. The same with lower strength lines. If it's 16 lbs test instead of 20 lb most people wouldn't know because they are catching 2 - 3 lb fish mostly.
    So how would they cut corners? The obvious one is to use a mixture of strong fibres such as UHMWPE and Dacron a type of nylon. For instance I specified a hollow braid from Jeely so I could splice my lines. there was some fibres in the middle of the line which could have been Dacron . This solid core prevented me from splicing the line.The line was 0.8 mm which should have tested at lest 200 lb if it were made from genuine UHMWPE fibres. The DSM Dyneema SK75 from Holland is 300 lb and 0.75 mm. Why was the jeely line 0.8 mm and 200 lb? The answer is obvious to me. It is also possible to make the actual braid from different fibres by either mixing the microfibres or by alternating one weave strong and one weave weak. They could also use weaker microfibres that are the result of cheaper chemicals or a cheaper process. Dirty chemicals, dirty machinery, dirty extrusion medium , lots of ways to produce inferior products and it comes down to money. they all want to undercut each other and the only way of staying competitive is to trim costs. That's ok but you must be honest and not call a Rolls Royce Phantom a Lada Niva.
    I have a new sponsor, Toyobo of Japan with their UHMWPE fibre called Izanas. They call it SK 777 and is equivalent to the Dyneema SK75. They are supplying fibre to Tasline, a New Zealand fishing line company. This sponsorship deal enables lines to be made by a supporting braiding company for the kite altitude record . Tasline has just purchased a large quantity of Izanas fibre which is coincidental to our existing informal line braiding sponsorship. I have no doubt the lines made from Izanas will be top quality as was the Dyneema line we used the break the kite altitude record. DSM Dyneema fully supports the manufacture of UHMWPE by Toyobo using their patented process..
    By the way, my team is going for 25,000 ft in August next year plus 40,000 ft. for the kite train record in future years. I am crowd funding through GoFundMe and FaceBook. You can see my web site at kitesite.com.au/kiterecord/High_Flying.html

    The pound rating on fishing line is determined under static loading. When you pull up that fast, not only are you increasing the load, you're throwing impact resistance into the equation. Either way, proved your point

  • @SuperBardley

    Heads up! On our West Coast forum, Northern California Kayak Anglers (NCKA.org) the general consensus is that while kayak fishing, we don't run a main line that's over about 35# due to the difficulty of successfully breaking it off without rolling the boat. Yes, we use 40# or 50# leaders for toothy and abrasive fishing, but keep the running line limited, AND we'll use something less than the running line so that that is what breaks off rather than shortening our main line.
    Remember, the whole point of drag and rod flex is to allow us to use lightweight lines without breakage -- this arrangement allows us to land some seriously big fish with disproportionately light line.

    There's a privately manufactured braid called Dynema Spectra which is also about $7 per 100m and it excels at everything except cut and bend resistance but is a very supple line and makes excellent leader material. Typically adding a barrel swivel to tie on the leader instead of using a uni knot yields much better performance.

    i use the exact same braid as the one shown from from gagadaijin. this braid has extreme line tension strength but extremly weak knot strength. my research lead me to believe that any knot on this braid will fail at 1/4 of its strengh. my secret, get anothet braid preferably double the thickness of ur mainline anf use it to plat your mainline down to your terminal tackle then do your knot. all the tension will be taken up by the plat onto your larger line. the tension will be reduced dramatically by the time it reaches ur knot. i use 70lb braid. my mono leader at 100lb breaks and this is at mid way. not at the knot. dont tell any one. it took me over a year to come up with this. no stingray, shark fish has broken me off. ive had to cut it because i couldn't be bothered fighting it.

    I just bought 2000 meters of 16 Strand 130 lb hollow core braid from Ashconfish which is definitely made in China. I don't personally care about where my fishing line is made. For that matter, I think that when people (self included) shop on Amazon and buy from a "US seller" they forget that soooo soooo much of what is on Amazon is just people reselling bulk-purchased goods from China just north of Hong Kong. At $160 for 2000 Meters (2187 yards) versus Seaguar $358 for 2500 yards (made in China) I think we have a winner. However, If I lose that big fish due to a break mid-braid I promise I will switch to good ole American made just on principal alone LOL.

    NEVER again. First cast - snap. Watched my lure go flying into the sunset....... more than three snap offs and wind knots galore.

    I use to use mono too, but switched to PowerPro because I got tired of leaving my expensive lures at the bottom of the lake or hung up in a tree. With the braid I can easily retrieve my lures and reel in the big ones. PowerPro may cost a bit more, but when you're talking about losing a $16.00 Whopper Plopper, or not, it's a lot cheaper to buy quality line. I looked at getting some of that cheap, Chinese crap, but talked myself out of it. Glad I did.

      Hey boss! I've been looking at the Hercules 8 strand 100# for shark fishing from the beach.
      My biggest concern is abrasion resistance.
      Do you fish for shark from the beach?
      Have you had problems with the line braking?
      How often do you replace it?
      Thank you

    The cheap 20lbs braid might lose, but the 40+ lbs will be closer to the expensive ones. I had one (Pilot) hold a 10 ft alu boat with 3 people against current. Also broke a 1.5 inch branch of the bottom.

    The smell goes away really fast, the kastking line is the actual strength that they say it is and power pro is alot stronger than it says it is, your knot strength was probably around 60% if you tie a good knot that is 80% or more you will have success with kastking.

    bought some called Ger Super in 10 15 20 25 and all the way up to 90 lb. When it got here the wife made me take it to the garage cause the smell was horrific but within a few days in the fresh air the smell was totally gone. It works great for gills and walleye and will give that 90 lb a try this spring on a couple of my froggin combos and will see if it can haul them out of the reeds and Lilly pads. I figure if it's cheap 90lb it might be closer to the more expensive 65lb I would normally use with frogs. Thanks for your videos

    I did similar tests with similar results. Then someone mentioned the ebay 4 strand is junk but the 8 strand is as good as any. I target snapper and kingfish in New Zealand so use 30lb to 80lb depending on the target fish. I recently tried some ebay 8 strand 80lb. It was ever so slightly thicker than the more expensive braids I use. Every test i did the ebay braid won. That's not to say it's better. I'm guessing it's probably the same as the big brands but they mislabeled 100lb as 80lb (hence the thicker strand) I've actually been fishing it for a few months now and I can't fault it. I just get white as i don't trust dye leakage and as you mention smell of the cheaper brands. I kite fish live bait from the beach so have around 1500 meters of 80lb. Costs about $45nz on ebay or $250nz+ for the name brands at my local tackle shops. I've noticed some 16 strand around now in the weight class i fish so may give that a go next time I need line. Great video. Will save some people waisting time or losing the big fish of the day.

Two different companies, two different line chemistries (OK they're both UHDPE fibres but the binding methods and resins are different). I've been using Spectra since 1995 (the same batch of line, in fact, which has been on several reels - I just can't bring myself to destroy it, it's the most awesome piece of fishing gear I own and have ever owned - and it's LINE!)

    Curious to know if the Chinese braid would of broken at 14lb. It would appear as if the Chinese braid broke at it's breaking strength, where as the power pro (as most other lines) are designed to break at a slightly higher breaking strengths. Doesn't necessarily mean that the Chinese braid is no good.
    Either way, my go to braid is KastKing. Price is on point and it compares with more expensive braids out there.

      You bet!

    • @BlokeOnAMotorbike
      @BlokeOnAMotorbike 5 лет назад

      the difference is how it lies on the spool. 4 strand lies flatter, 8 strand is what you'll find in the rounder braids which are less prone to springing. If it's a sealed braid (some brands call it "fused"), then it matters little if it's 4 or 8 because the line is stiffer anyway - if it's going to spring, it'll spring whatever its cross-section.
      THAT SAID, I have a centrepin reel loaded with 23 year old Spectra braid and that stuff is as strong as it was when I first used it on a Silstar EX40 in 1995.
      How many people here can say "I'm using two decade old line and feel confident with it"?

  • @Pray4Mojo1
    @Pray4Mojo1 3 года назад

    Braid is generally strong overall, no matter what brand you buy. But some of these cheaper braids just plain suck for castability, abrasion resistance, and nearly all of them bleed their colors way faster than some of the more expensive brands.

    Uhhh....never mind. I'll bite the bullet and spring for Power Pro. Most of my bait casters have 5 years of the same load on them. Time to reload. I guess its cost effective, since I had to change mono every year. But it hurts for a while, lol.

    Just a silly question:
    Why you need (or what for) a so thin fishing line if you need 20 pounds of strength ?
    is this for a tiny spinning reel? a so delicate fishing needs that strength? a power that never existed before?
    Since my childhood (outside US and 50 years ago) I've learned to buy the line by diameter...(I 've found 20 years ago, is different here, people buy "By the pound")
    Buying "by the pound" is deceaving in many ways...
    A 15 pound "old fashion mono" is thicker than a 40/50 pound braided today.
    A 40 pound braided (4 strands) is 0.32mm diemeter when the 15 pound old Zebco mono is 0.35mm diameter...
    Is not the time to load your baitcaster reels with a 0.32 ø braid 40/50 pound resistant?
    In a normal reel you will be able to put 100 meters or 109 yards, is that not enough? at the same time you reduce the chances of backlash...and that is a whole block in my neighborhood!!! is a lot of line!!
    And you are also having an absolute abnormal oversized resistance...
    I spent a lot of money in braid lines last 15 years, all possible brands and sizes.
    I decided to go to 0.32ø for all of them (8 strands 40 pounds resistanceand, low abrasion)
    How are you loading your bait casters?
    Spinning reel are different in my case, they are more suitable to "finesse" fishing.
    Thanks!
    Fred.

    • @KayakhacksFishing
      @KayakhacksFishing  7 лет назад

      I use this on spinning rods. Guess I never thought about diameter having grown up with weights and that old, thick mono line you mention. But did you notice how the line visibly stretched before it broke. Just like a rubber band. I think I will take your advice and move up to 30 lb when I use up all my 20lb power pro

    • @fredfable5655
      @fredfable5655 7 лет назад +1

      I personally tested diameter today (and because the analysis originated in this post) With a digital caliber I compared the old zebco mono 15 pounds and diameter is 0.35mm.
      At the same time a braid stated as 0.32 mm (mesured .30/031 brand new from bobin , I opened it only for the sake of this post ) stated 40 pound resistance...the brand is Spectra Extreme "8 strands" and is also coated, very low abrasion compared to the normal 4 strands.
      I paid in china as special of the "dragon day" (or some celebration they have everything on sale)..10 dollars/ 500 meters (almost 550 yards) is like the power pro super 8 slick type.
      Hope this helps somebody.
      By the way, I'm not using Ebay for many of this matters, I go stright to the manufacturer using aliexpress.com...found cheaper and manufacturer.
      My five cents for your research in china:
      Braid : (Four strands/plyes/woven)
      Superbraid: (8 strands/plyes/woven and some cases coated) less abrasive than the previous.
      PE : material used (Poly ethylene / Poly ester)
      Chinese line numbers:
      #3 (from 0.25 to 0.285 mm)
      #4 (from 0.30 to 0.32 mm)
      Example: This seller is a manufacturer:

  • @peterbrucker798

    I found the breaking strength of the china braid is within 3% of stated strength. The real weakness is in knot strength. Any knot that doubles back on itself reduces breaking strength to less than half of line strength. When compared to power pro or like brands , knot strength is no less than 80% of stated strength. In order to utilize china braid a mono leader must be attached to both ends of the line using a properly tied and cinched FG Knot. The mono knot strength then can exceed the china braid line strength. Tying china braid directly to terminal tackle is useless. Most people will give up using China braid due to the weakness in knot strength.

    I thought PP was an American made company? Not only that but just because something is maybe manufactured like fibers the real magic happens when they weave it and also if there conditioning or adding anything to it. No cheap braid has ever held up for long with the exception of Kastking. That's the cheapest I'll go with

    You made no mention on the type of braid you were using. There are 4, 6, 8, and 9 strand braids. I am sure there are others also but those are the ones I have found that actually said what they were. I am not sure what the Power Pro is but were the other brands the same number of strands?
    All braids are not the same so you need to be testing apples to apples and you did not indicate what you were testing.

    just because 2 similar things are produced using identical inputs and equipment does not mean the final product is the same. The perfect example is if you have 2 well stocked fridges of ingredients in 2 identical kitchens, give one to to a michelin star chef and the other to a 14 year old kid. You eat what the 14 year old cooks, i'll take the other.

    Need to be real careful on Ebay buying PowerPro too. They have sellers that are selling "PowerPro" that is counterfeit, but has all the correct logo markings, and looks factory sealed. I got some 80lb, and tested it with multiple knots, and it broke at 40 lbs every time. The ebay seller refunded 1/2 my money, but I didn't need 40 lb line. So beware because it looks like the genuine article.

      @Paul T Beware - ebay have no concerns for counterfeit goods on their listings - they are just out to rake in the profits from these big far eastern sellers with their multiple shops. I reported a seller with 3 shops recently for selling counterfeit items, I sent proof to ebay that the items were counterfeit, and they have refused to do anything about it. The items are all still for sale. All ebay see is £££ & $$$.

    Ok Steave I have some things to point from the "Chinese experience".
    The smell...
    I don't know why many of the items we buy in china are sanitized "by law" and others seemed to be not.
    No matter the material whatever you buy, they smell like: "smoke from and old kerosen or gas oil lamp" somebody told me that sanitizing process is done inside to the whole container, no matter what you put inside, unless is edible.
    Even those little cardboard boxes from China Post smell inside...I don't know what to say.
    Rubber stuff, plastic, fiber glass, wood almost the majority of things get "that smell", related to fishing lines...the smell vanishes when you put the lines in water during the fishing process.

    • @fredfable5655
      @fredfable5655 7 лет назад +1

      The test:
      No knot has to be involved, you can roll or wrap around two bars and put tension between them gradually, you can use a bag scale or the fishing scale to messure the exact breaking point (record with the camera the scale screen and you have a clear visual number)
      Line resistence, Knot resistence, abrassion resistence are different values, they will promote the best and will hide the worst.

    • @fredfable5655
      @fredfable5655 7 лет назад

      The material:
      even the same material is made different. Same thickness can be made with four strands, six or eight strands (some manufactors specify that numbers) those lines have different behavior on the water, some float great, others not so good and sink faster. Knot resistance is also different. and softness also.

    • @fredfable5655
      @fredfable5655 7 лет назад

      The seller/manufacturer:
      Same factories have different quality/price standards. You are able to choose two or three quality standards at different price. Same factory.
      If you buy the bulk to a Chinese manufacturer sometimes you can specify "how good enough" your ordered product will be, depending how much you want to invest on it.

    Physics is a huge factor in your experiment. When you did the last test with the cheap line the length of the line was a bit longer than when u tested the power pro and could be why it broke so easily. Both lines should have been the exact same length. Although the cheap line may still break this experiment does not justify anything.

    Try the Fishingsir Godline, especially their 8 strands braided line. You will never go back to any other braided lines you had before! It is simply the smoothest and most supple braided line I've ever used and I have used nearly all of the most expensive braided lines there is! Not only the fact that it is the most supple and smoothest braided line I've ever used, but it is also extremely strong and reasonably priced braided line as well!
    On a side note, why didn't you test the other cheap Chinese line to see its strength as well? And why you didn't show us if the Chinese line broke at the knot or at the main line itself? You could have a bad knot when you test the Chinese line. We don't know for sure!
