  • Overcoming self doubt as a musician isn't as easy as it sounds. Building confidence in your music as well as building self confidence as an individual is a determining factor in your overall success in the music industry. This is also something that needs to be worked on throughout your entire career otherwise you'll be on your way to self destruction even after experiencing an abundance of short term success. Mental health as a music creator is something that needs to be addressed while navigating common mental road blocks. In this video I explain why building your brand and music based business is a waste of time if you don't focus on this first.

It's crazy how many artists we meet who are planning and planning but never actually release their music because they're worried about what others will think. If your release isn't a success it means not many people hear it so the downside is tiny compared to the potential upside of it blowing up.

Thanks. I mean, a lot of these are from years back. Though I've noticed a rather recurring theme i the songs I've written, looking at them in such a succession this week. They're usually either about having a heart broken, or sex. Kind of seems like a Bullet for my Valentine catalog. Admittedly, there are a few about losing one's mind or something of that nature. Though about 40% sex, 50% heartbreak. The rest are about... I don't know, observations are about the world around me. Angsty observations.

If you don't believe in yourself, nobody else will. That very thing kept me from singing in front of anyone other than my small children. Even my wife had only heard me sing twice in our first 8 years of marriage. Today, I'm the lead singer in a great band, and I've heard nothing but the opposite of what I believed for decades. Do I wish I had more? Oh, of course, but that I can walk out on stage and see people that came to watch me sing makes me regret those decades of doubt.

I’ve been struggling with this for the past 5 years or so. Even with posting videos on here of me singing covers. Pursuing a singing career and being on stage has been something I’ve dreamed about since I was 5 years old. I’m 29 now and worry I wasted the past 5 years being so scared for just create, wrote songs, and put my voice out into the world. Reading this inspired me. Thank you for sharing your experience ♥️.

Oh dealt with self doubt until i had a spiritual awakening that erased my imposter syndrome. A year later i got into an abusive relationship that messed me up mentally. Now i am on the right path again , on a journey to be intentional and free and let the art flow through me like a river. Like a river the universe is using to get it's point accross like an instrument. Just flow like an instrument and let the universe take care of everything else.

Hey Adam, normally I don't post up anything public on RUclips, and I just read what everyone else posts up,but this video really touched me.Here's my story, and hopefully it'll inspire someone.I'm not only an eclectic acoustic fingerstyle singer-songwriter who has been playing for over 18 years, but I'm also a "broke & half crazy" alcoholic in both recovery & therapy.I've been through a lot in my life (death, poverty, addiction, mental illness, heartbreak, etc),and being what I am can really fuck with any musician who's just wanting to at least scrape a living doing what they love to do in today's world, but what keeps me going is my pure unconditional love of music along with a few other things(God,family, friends, etc).I don't care anymore if I ever get rich or scrape a penny in this fucked up business. As long as I'm able to write & play I'll keep doing my own thing, and if I can touch someone with my story then that'll make it all worth while. Thanks again,& take everything one day at a time.Have a nice day 🙂.

I just recently heard another youtuber say that if you look at the people that are being negative towards your efforts, what is more than likely going on is that they're frustrated that you're moving forward and they're not, and they are attempting to slow you down. I'm not saying there's never truth in their comments haha if there's something to learn there's something to learn. And I know it's easier said than done, I haven't experienced it yet and I hope I'm able to handle it this way if/when I ever get to that point, but I feel I need to not take what they say personally, hopefully I can read between the lines, is there something there I can actually improve on. But as long as I'm moving forward and progressing, picking up even one or two fans/followers/subs here and there, then I'm ultimately not going to feel I'm wasting my time. Anyway, thanks for the great video, you have helped me and as I see many others with our growth and efforts!

I go to therapy weekly, and I have been for the last 2 years. I started going to therapy at 14 and I'm 24 now. I grew up in a very dysfunctional and toxic environment. I've found in the last 2 years of therapy that I needed to let out any poisonous or toxic emotions and thoughts, a lot of which stemmed from habits that I learned from my dysfunctional parents.
I'm just now starting to visualize a healthy future for myself. Up until the last couple years I couldn't even begin to fathom what a healthy lifestyle is. I think many of us don't realize how much our environment impacts our mental stability. If there's any advice I could give to those struggling mentally, it would be to try finding a therapist that you can connect with, especially if your parents and friends are toxic. It will take time to change your thinking and habits, but it's well worth it.

Ohhhh Yea, I have a massive case of Imposter Syndrome. So much so that I heard the adage about "Competence breeds confidence" so I did Music Business in school and Music Production. Thinking that if I build my skillset up so bmhigh, that any band I get into would be absolute idiots to cut me loose because I'm a terrible musician (Even though I wasn't at the time).
Problem is, I missed the runway on that. Know what a lot of bands don't want to hear from a guy they're auditioning? What it's going to take to "make it." Basically years of trial and error packed up into an hour long discussion rubs a lot of people wrong. Now, I understand that it's a reflection of their insecurities (Like losing control of their band, if the new guy knows what's up), it didn't really help when going to numerous auditions and leaving empty handed.
Then there was the whole thing where I woke up one day and my bonfire of passion for music had been put out. Tried for six months to reignite it, but it honestly got me feeling as though it was a chore. Then nothing for a few years. Only to pick it up again and my hands can't do a tenth of the stuff on a guitar that I used to be able to, my voice is shit (It's ok... But not at all great, like before) and oddly enough, my songwriting has been rather good. Had books I write songs down into that I started ten years ago and I've actually filled a third of what I have so far, in the last few months. In any case, despite my songwriting taking off, the Imposter Syndrome is in full swing. Possibly even worse than before.

This video was very helpful , I’ve been holding back from putting my music out due to me being in a car accident back in 2016 and having surgery, I don’t wanna talk about certain things and it get me in trouble with my lawyer...I really feel if the music did get out it would make a difference, like you said need a mentor or someone around to point in right direction...not too much going on here in Syracuse,Ny #MiLo #AdamIvy #Burstimo #Distrokid
