Stuff we use:
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z

Thank you.
1. Listen, but don't do what they say.
2. You're born cool
@House Of Fleapit agree
Yes
I'm nervous.
"Don't be nervous."
Gotcha. What was I thinking.
"dont be nervous"
interviewer: "((ok..))"
Ok.
I'm still nervous
What he was saying is don't be a bitch. Is that easier for you to understand?
😂
@@epicon6 thank you
I needed this. I WILL become a film director.
Same for me, I want to be an artist. Good luck man
You are.
Instead of saying "I will" Say “I am" that’s how you manifest your goals and dreams.
Yas Queen hail satan!
Yeah, but a good one?
3:05 "I remember a therapist once said, I was complaining about my father, and the first thing he said was 'God!' and I said 'God what?' 'The sh!t that parents tell their kids is unbelievable! Every kid that comes in here, they're FINE; it's their parents that're fvckin' crazy, but I can't tell them that, because they'll stop takin' the kid here!'"
This almost can't be overstated, how poignant and existentially useful a lesson it is. Learning how to establish your own boundaries, and cultivate your own self-love, and getting to a place where you can see your parents as human beings just like any other human beings. My relationship with my father was Not Very Good as a youngster, but it got better as I grew up and developed the ability to separate 'him' as a 'Father' icon whose job it was to raise me, and 'him' as the person who just happened to marry my mom.
A lot of us, just by 'the hand that we were dealt', have to grow up in environments that feel something between a low-security prison and an actual Stockholm Syndrome. And nobody really helps us understand that this is the meta; that this is just a stage in our lives, and our parents try their best to play certain roles on that stage, but it's usually not your fault, as a kid, when they can't play their role worth beans. They're just human; they're not your responsibility; they're still just coming to grips with the fact that YOU are THEIR responsibility.
Anyway, I'll hush now...
Thank you! I never thought in terms of Stockholm Syndrome. That makes sense on a number of levels!
Very good interview!
"Don't do what stupid people say". This is so true. I wish I had had a mentor like Larry early in my life.
When I told my family that after school I wanted to study art or design, they said things like "so then you can design curtains and tablecloths for a living!", and "how do you expect to make money with that?", "at art school there are very talented people, you would't be able to keep up with them".
So I got a diploma in biology, and I was very unhappy most of the time. It took me until now - at age 40 - to take my love for art seriously. Everyday, I have to fight thoughts like "this makes no sense, you're too old now to have a career in art, you're to slow, you'll never learn enough, why can't you go to office for work like normal people....blah bla blah". But that's only my family talking in my head. I might never be a successful artist, but I feel alive now, and grateful, and just happy whenever I'm painting.
Naysayers are like they are because they're insecure and doubt themselves. When giving their precious "advice", it's not because they're concerned with your well-being, but because they try to protect their ego, which is intimidated by people who have dreams and know exactly what they want, unlike them.
Are you f@cking kidding me? Wow, what you said is just what I am going through as well right now. I studied biology as well, and let me tell you this. Biology sucks balls. Good luck and yeah, "Don't listen to stupid people."
@Jeffrey Gifford yeah, maybe for you that is true. We all do not have the same amount of income or savings; however, that was a nice try. But your comment does not apply to me or anyone else. I do not have to do anything I do not want to do. You should reread the last line in the original post. Here, I will help you out and quote it for you. " When giving their precious "advice", it's not because they're concerned with your well-being, but because they are trying to protect their ego, which is intimidated by people who have dreams and know exactly what they want, unlike them."
@Jeffrey Gifford I love irony... I do not even live in the US. Here is some help for ya, for free I might add. Not everyone that speaks English lives in the United States or Canada or the Uk... I am sorry I can't talk longer with you. It seems like it would be really productive...But I gotta go follow my dreams. What is it you yanks say?? Oh yeah, Just pull yourself up by the bootstraps and get your life together. Good luck mate.
@Jeffrey Gifford you know absolutely nothing about me. You do not know what I have to do or do not have to do.
Ure not alone on this. Always loved acting and thats what i wanted to do. Ofcourse family doesnt agree. Been in and out of Jobs many times because of that conflict.
35 now. Still working to make ends meet. No point blaming anybody though. Just shot my showreel. I'll keep at. Best of luck to you brother.
Random thing: What I do, when writing (although, you can apply this to the medium you work in) is I take myself out of the work. For me, it comes instinctively. These aren't my stories, these are the character's stories. If it doesn't come naturally to you, try giving it a go. Pretend someone else wrote your work or made your film then look at it, read it, watch it. And if you're enjoying it. If whatever you've made makes you feel something, then you've done it. Anything in it you find you don't like, workshop it or chop it. Remember that you're not the only person into what you enjoy. If you dig what you've done, then I say you've succeeded!!! Now go make that thing!!!!
Not just parents f*ck up their kids. Siblings too.
Trust your gut.

I went to a family therapist many years back, and I recall an illustration framed up on the wall of his office that showed an auditorium with three people sitting scattered amongst all the seats. It was titled:
Welcome to the Children Who Were Raised by ‘Normal’ Parents Convention
I have to save this and re-watch it once every three months.
I think Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page said the best thing for anyone of any discipline: “Just believe in yourself“.
Easier said than done.
"Throw that one hand up, and the universe slaps you." Haha! Awesome
+1
*slaps IT, as in your hand like a high five. The universe slapping you would mean the opposite.
I thought throwing both hands meant giving up.
"Knock and the door will be opened to you."
@@user-ik8vy1rg8f Great motivational quote. Thank you for sharing.
I'm surprised by the absence of "Mr Heckles" jokes... 😥
From friends, I knew I saw him. I thought he was an actor, not a writer. looooooooool
I THOUGHT I WAS CRAZY WHEN I THOUGHT HE LOOKED TOO FAMILIAR HAHA XDD
"You can prepare without being nervous; nervous has nothing to do with it."
This is actually extremely helpful for me, I've become dependent on something I never needed.
Ya know, that's actually hilarious. I once decided I was going to go for a part in a stage show, the tryouts for which were 4 hours away. When the owner of the company addressed the attendees, the first thing he asked was, "who's nervous?" Out of the 70 or so people there including the owner himself, I was the only one who didn't raise my hand. I had just driven 4 hours to try this, I simply refused to be nervous. I guarantee I was the only person who walked away that day knowing I landed the part without waiting for the email. I simply refused to be nervous, bringing an unrivaled feeling of self confidence. I had it in my mind that I would absolutely not leave that day without that part. I succeeded.
Only guy to be in Seinfeld, Friends and Breaking Bad . 3 of the top tv shows of all time
It's amazing to look at his IMDB page. He's been on just about everything, including oldies but goodies Lou Grant, Laverne and Shirley, Benson, WKRP... crazy career.
@szs voc damn I didn't know a person could be this boring
Friends is nice to watch as in the face that I like to have a group of friends like that.
@szs voc yeah I don't really find it that funny. but its more that I like to have a group of friends like that, only funnier.
Yes
Adding to this incredible monologue I'd say "Do what you do because that's what you do and to hell with doing it for a reason." Reason being for example, to succeed, to sell, to get a job, etc. If you do as I recommend, it will "feed" you in your old age and make your entire life worthwhile. Worthwhile being fewer regrets.
Basically you just keep going. People will love what you do, or hate what you do, but that doesn't depend on you.
You never stop creating. As soon as you finish a piece, or a script, or a shot, or a scene, or a book... You make another, and then another, and then another... Because you are a creator... People will love it, hate it, reality will get in the way... But you just keep going, because you LOVE creating more than you HATE what comes with it...
You may not feel like you're "good enough"... but doesn't matter. The sole act of creating continuously will make you eventually good. Learning and practicing are things you do for the rest of your life... You keep going!!
Exactly.
I'm a comic book artist, this pep talk helped. Thank you.
I'm a comic book creator as well. Where is your work I'd like to check it out? We can learn from each other to improve our skills.
@@ParmyBaddhan comic book artists unite!
Me to keep creating
"My parents, close friends, everybody crushes you. That was the tragedy, I listened to these stupid people."
I felt that.
This was the best piece of advice I've seen in a while.
Glad this one found you Gio!
Larry is always what the world needs.
About 12 years ago, when I was first stating to experiment with film-making, Larry gave me some encouragement that has stuck with me and I'm always grateful to him for it.
And what was that ? :)
"...to all these...STUPID PEOPLE" lol LOVE IT.
The "Pacman" analogy was brilliant. A man of many interesting stories. ^_^
That's an unforgettable moment for us, Larry Hankin doing the Pacman.
Film Courage You were nearly eaten! ^_^
fuzzylumpkin49 A great outlook for 2015 and for life in general, be on the offensive.
Larry Hankin is an incredible artist and I’ve had the good luck to work with him a couple of times in the 80s and 90s.
Explain
Yes. I tried to do it everybody elses way, too. Doesn' t work. Still learning at almost 50.
Swampy Joe hey bud I’m 62 and just started writing my first book. Sticking that hand up waiting for the universe 5o High 5 me!
Always learning. That's the good news 😉
@@techprofessor Hope you're still at it!
I call them blockheads.
@@techprofessor I wanna read your book?
I absolutely love this man's energy.
"Throw one hand up and the universe slaps it..." got me teary eyed. Thank you for sharing this. 🍃🍃🤗
This guy has such an interesting look. Really draws your eyes to him
he reminds me of john cazale
Larry’s right about parents. Boy, is he right!
Im so grateful that so many people have a voice to encourage others and share wisdom.
Doing our best.
I was chuckling to myself. I don't want to be THAT parent. I want my kids to stay cool. The problem is parents are always learning, they don't know everything and they make mistakes too. I told my boys that recently. They were surprised. They are 6 and 8. I think it's good for them to know that adults can mess things up too.
@Anna Maledon Picture Book Author...thanks and yes, kids need strong direction, particularly in these unrestful times, and the parents will are the ones who impart strong individualist moral standards, so yes, parents are not infallible. Thanks, again.
What a wise wise man
That is totally true. Young generation should watch this video before taking career decision. It will never work if u go on a path which other plans for you.
Mr. Heckles! 🥰🥰🥰🥰
AFFIRM!!!!!! Throw That One Hand Up and The Universe Slaps You!!!!! I LOVE IT!
Wow, so many times I heard this kind of "listen to yourself"-preaching but nobody expressed it so directly as mr Hankin here. No bull**** just to the f**** point. And is so simple. So damn simple.
I work a day job but do what I think is fun at night. I worked in film for years but didn’t enjoy the process. You had 12 hour days if you were lucky all while working on movies for other people whose vision 90% of the time I felt was lackluster. Meanwhile, I feel like I have voices from both ends nagging. The family telling me to stick with my day job, and the artists telling me to leave it. In actuality I want a normal life where I can make films without being sucked into the volatile, ego driven atmosphere of the film industry, commercial and non commercial.
In the end I do my day job while also writing reviews, doing film discussions, attending festivals, and making little movies. I feel a bit more comfortable here where I can manage both brining balance to my life.
Most people would tell me to completely drop one for the other. But every person is different. I listened to everyone, I did everything, and I ended up making a split decision that I can ultimately die feeling satisfied with.
My coworkers at the day job will frequently talk about how horrible their job is because of the power hungry administrators. They seem miserable and it’s probably because they don’t do cool things they enjoy that’s tapping into their passion. There’s nothing for them to look forward to. So there’s no escape for them.
In the meantime when I get off work I have an interview with an actor or director I admire or get to head to an early screening of the newest Star Wars film. It took me years to get to where I got to obtain that access. My numbers suck. My clicks are limited but I never gave up and it paid off. Do I get paid for all my critic stuff? No. But I do it because it’s fun.
If I listened to either side completely my life would have been a downward spiral of continual substance abuse to shut my thoughts the fuck up. At the end of the day, I’m happy with my decision. I hope this posting made sense.
Cosmic high five! I love this guys energy!
Thank you for talking about being good to yourself when writing about personal experiences referenced for characters. It can be both be cathartic & traumatic. A writers moods are important to pay attention to.
Beautifully said. Creative life is an authentic life if you let it.
Larry is very energetic Character! Much respect to him. Thanks for sharibg jis Knowledge!
He will always be the guy in Billy Madison to me
He will always be the second Kramer to me.
Crazy Carl🐿
@Christopher Kersey 😂😂😂
I always see breaking bad
To me he will always be that guy that was murdered by those six gross kids who lived above him. I'm not buying that heart attack story for one second. They hated him, they tortured him with their shenanigans, and they bumped him off. We all know the truth! God speed Mr Heckles! We still miss you!
Boy I can only dream to being that lucid and joyous at 80.
That is awesome he is so right on with this. My closest circle has always, and still always tell me im shit. Listen, but do you, and you will be happier. But know that people wont be happy for you for a long time, if ever. Crab in the bucket mentality is pervasive.
Thank you Mr.Hackles, always coming through.
Mr. Heckles dropping some truth bombs in four-ish minutes. :)
If I ever need some encouragement, or a massive magnet. I know who to call, thanks Larry
Feels weird to be getting artistic inspiration from Mr. Heckles
As far as we know we only have one life and it goes fast. So do what is in your head and heart, if you don’t follow your dreams and instincts you could end up sorry later in life. Nobody is going to give you anything, you have to go after it.
Im not even striving to be a film director or a screenwriter (Im an aspiring musician tho) but dang, didnt know I needed to hear this. Especially the part with the parents, I didnt have a good relationship with them growing up and I definitely let everything they told me affect me very negatively. I think part of successfully defeating self-doubt is also cutting toxic people out of your life when you can. You gotta surround yourself with people who understands you, not blindly accept everything you do, but understand you and accept your difference. Ive read somewhere, "The worse thing than being alone is being surrounded with people who make you feel you're alone". I dont think self-doubt stems from yourself alone, it stems from a bunch of external factors. And you gotta make your circle healthy, that's where you get some confidence.
I couldn't press the like button fast enough!!!
I really needed to hear this!!!😃😃😃
...and the universe slaps it...that is great!
One of the best interviews I've seen on this channel. This guy is so right, do it YOUR Way.
Larry is great, happy you found this video.
This dude... is so cool! I'm 27 and I wanna be like him when I grow up!
Follow your dreams lol
This was such encouraging advice. I also grew up trying to follow everyone else's way but my own so now Im trying to unlearn the shit that the stupid taught me, and learn to do things my way despite all the consequences that it might bring cause the learning will be worth it along the way
Heck yes, Gerika!!
Am I the only one who would absolutely love a discussion between marshal vandruff and this guy, that's would be so awesome xDxD
At 3:20
"They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.
But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another’s throats.
Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don’t have any kids yourself."
-Philip Larkin, This Be The Verse.
I fuckin’ love him.
The guy is especially likable
Holy shit! This man is so awesome!
You can't let people rent space in your head!
I remember this one councillor I saw as a child who would ask about my week, she straight told me she could only listen to and try and help me yet couldn't do anything about the families behaviour, this was so helpful.
if isn't, Old Joe from Breaking Bad. Great way to start the year!
"Parents who fuck up kids, kids don't fuck themselves up" ...interesting,concept... does this mean that parents are the victims of their parents and so the "fuck up " continues, unless you/ somebody breaks the link...?
That’s the way 👁 viewed it
Yeah pretty much. You about described what the cycle of abuse is.
Yeah that’s what I’m thinking too. It’s hard to break the cycle and “get it out of your genes”. When you don’t have kids yet but pets you can already catch yourself getting grumpy at them at times, letting frustrations out on them because they do sth annoying. Every time I catch myself at this I force myself to think clear and make it up immediately after. I want to break the cycle and treat my future children the best I can.
Absolutely.
Also the system of exploitation under which we live fucks us all up at the same time.
I absolutely loved this! Well done.
This one is great!
no more mr nice guy: "give yourself permission to fail"
this comment flicked a switch in me. i've written 2 books, and rewritten the first one almost twice. it's almost to a point where i'd say the first one is finished and ready to approach agents - but i'd always been reluctant because i felt like it had to be perfect or it would fail
but now its like "maybe if i put it out into the world, it will actually be good enough without making it totally perfect".
the more i thought about it, the more i realised that my favourite music/movies/books etc all have various flaws and imperfections. sometimes that is what makes them
Okay RUclips, get out of my head. Yesterday, I was thinking of this guy in "Escape from Alcatraz" (specifically, the scene where he tells Eastwood it's his birthday). Just thinking it, not searching for it, not even talking about it. But I do like him. He's one of those great character actors that I always used to get confused with other actors, like Fred Yerkes and Paul Greco.
He did take the raisins, but still gives good advice. I once made the mistake that I listened too much what others said. Just do what you do and believe in it. Don't let other people stop you. They try.
Everytime I see this guy I think
Carl! So nice to see you!!
It's sad when you look back and see that other people make your dreams come true... in their life - while you gave up when someone laughed at your "stupid" idea.
I had an emotionally abusive grandmother who really did a number on me. I spent most of my young adult life trying to gain any confidence but this lead to me not doing much else in my 20s.
I am realizing the need for my talents in this world I am amazing I will be so amazing for everything living here. Thank you from the deepest parts of my heart
Fantastic!!
Thank you much.
Go into the light Mr. Heckles!! ✨
Carl is a good guy.
Larry's an amazingly talented TV & film actor! I still remember him as Carl in Billy Madison.
Awesome, wonderful to see such youthfulness in such an old body.

Thank you, Mr. Heckles!
Thank you, for your beautiful encouraging words Mr. Hankin
✨🦋
When this guy talks about parents, it reminds me of church. The preacher can not preach about adults in fear of them leaving and going to another church. When hip hop came out this is what happened in the Black churches.
A similar thing happened to us in the 1980's with heavy metal/rap, PMRC, churches and politicos with Satanic fear-mongering, and rehab/institution "Just Say No" rhetoric. There were many young victims of this unholy cabal, myself included, and slews of parents were fleeced in the process.
I never thought about the hip'hop/church situation too much, hmmm.
Oh hey! is this the "Private Domicile" guy from Breaking Bad?! What a legend! Excellent advice thank you!
