I like this guy but I disagree on part of it. Prolly the part you like the most, cause you need to at least get good enough for other people to want to become fans of you. Or else your just waisting time and money. No one wants to put in the work to perfecting your craft everyone wants to skip that step. Y’all stop being lazy.

I have been paralyzed by the pursuit of perfection so I appreciate this video. I always think back to an interview with Ryan Tedder (One Republic) in which he said he made sure his rough demos were nearly perfect before he let any hear them. I have been recording music for nearly 3 years and noone has heard my songs. I think its time to change that. Thanks again.

Only have 3 songs out right now and I sat on each of them for months before I decided to drop them. Started promoting myself on instagram with photoshoots and gained a good following before dropping songs and so far it’s been going well! My next focus is getting to open mics & finishing an EP to release by summertime!

  • @remotegod255

I'm trying to balance writing quality music with getting my name out there. Last year, given where I'm at in life, I decided the best approach *for me* was to commit and write & record 50 new demo songs as fast as possible. I started on this project almost 6 months ago - work in studio almost every night (about 90% consistent on that) - I'm on Song #29 right now and planning to be done with #50 at the beginning of May. Then I'm going to take the best 10 demo songs from those 50 tracks, polish them with careful rewrites, re-recording and full production. And then, start pushing those finished tracks as hard as possible so people can hear my best work and discover me through it.
I'm interested in the long game and my dream is to be a GREAT songwriter. Plus, I love writing music, as challenging as it is, and hearing my work come to life - see my own art getting better with hard work and experience. So, these 50 songs are just a gateway to my dream of a lifelong career in music. I want to write hundreds more. Each song I've finished has taught me a *huge* amount about songwriting and my artistic vision. I've learned practical workflows, new instruments, gotten stronger at lyrics, weak spots, discovered my strengths, gotten way out of my comfort zone, and become a more fulfilled human.
But, Adam, you've made me realize I could do so much more to share the JOURNEY I'm on, even before I start releasing the music itself. As always, the problem is time: every minute spent on Instagram, Twitter, RUclips etc. is one less minute to actually do songwriting or to earn money from my "day job" to use on music projects & promotion. But, I could easily do more with just a couple of minutes a day - even just an Instagram photo each night in the studio.
Thanks for the great advice and motivation as always. I'll start sharing more of the journey so people know where to find my music *before* I start releasing it, not just after.

Remote God I started the same process a few months ago. I used to polish every song I wrote before moving on. It’s so freeing to write while putting off judgement until I have a collection of songs, then picking out winners. I think writing an album may be easier than writing a single, because you don’t waste time polishing something that should be in the trash.

I started to play seriously in 2000, in 2006 I uploaded my first video on RUclips. But during those years I practiced my passion of playing guitar and producing music through some amateur compositions that I shared on my blog with friends and people at the faculty I was studying at. Now it's 2019 and my RUclips is growing and I am still learning. I have a few friends who keep waiting to perfect, but I agree with Adam that doing is better than perfecting, perfection only comes by doing. If you listen to any of the older bands like Iron Maiden for example you will see they still get better on each new album even though they have doing music for more than 30 years.

I have been a "spoiled" vocalist since singing in church. I always said I would wait until I was ready. With a huge perfection/gear complex.
The beginning of October the bottom fell out of my life and I ended up transient, pending getting back into the home I was paying for.
I moved back in 5 days ago. Five months ago, started (generally 4 hours a day) running drills on guitar. I'm so stoked for the progress I see.
Going all in isn't necessary, but each breakthrough is quick and awesome.
My point is, I waited over 15 years and squandered my talent.
Yeah my voice took a hit. But nobody banned me from music or burned me alive. I find im learning 10 times quicker and now have a focus and mission for all musicians or interested persons to get past the rockstar complex.
I joke about that curing cancer.
Honestly I believe it.... no shame.
    Dream big.....work hard.
Need to feel better about it?
Watch my goofy ass after 5 months of practice try and loop and play guitar at the same time.
    It's awesome.
You wont learn until you do it.
Includes marketing, vid editing, live performance, and mixing/recording.
Last thing I'll say is...... if we were perfect when we released our stuff wouldn't we be one hit wonders?

This video resonated with me so much. I just want to support certain points with my own personal experience.
1st - Time & "regret" (for lack of a milder word): As someone who is 32 years of age who started making beats around are 16 on pirated software as a hobby, purchased my daw in December 2010 and now 10 years later is beginning to wonder where time has went. I've been stuck in the trying to be perfect loop for years and it is a struggle to get out of. Sound is constantly evolving, you can make the 10/10 perfect craft today and tomorrow will sound like trash in comparison.
2nd - Whatever you have, put it out: That also is true. I do not know whether Adam will agree on this but through personal experience when I did my first beat compilation disc in 2012ish, friends and family are the worst persons to leverage for support. They are unable to tell the truth which will help you grow. And I am not referring technical review but from a listeners stand point. If you wish to start with them, I still recommend getting your stuff out there to get the brutal honesty of the internet, however don't get stuck in the producer forums too much because if your music is great but they know you don't use hardware, they will make you feel like your craft is trash.
I have so much more I can share which touched me in this video, but my comment is already an entire website so I'll leave these two. Get started guys.

But now I think I can finally release my own produced music.
Thank you Adam, you have no idea how you built my self esteem 🙇

In my beginnings, I shared everything during every stage as I discovered new things along the way. So, whether it was a two bar riff or half of an arrangement, I was so at awe about the little discoveries along the way that I was too excited to wait until the finish line before showing others what I could do or achieved at every count. Overall, my sounds were amateur, but it didn’t matter because I was just excited about being able to do something different and better constantly. Well, it turned out that by my sharing each snippet or piece of work along the way also illuminated solid ideas and creative sparks among others. I started receiving feedback from artists that I admired and deemed untouchable. It was the greatest boost to my confidence because they didn’t reach out to me in awe for my music as much as the ideas around certain elements within my unfinished work. Overall, it served as a major building block toward confidently completing songs later as they naturally felt complete. Unfinished work bears strong ideas, and ideas inspire creativity, which often leads to constructive feedback and mentoring. The best thing you can get in the beginning is when an artist or person you look up to says “Hey man, very interesting transition right there. Try a little bit of this around it...”, or “I like this section here. It sounds cohesive.” That’s better than a focus on completion; it’s receiving direction, which comes from sharing.

I've been writing/recording music for over 10 years. Throughout a lot of that time I didn't focus on the marketing aspect of things and taking the next step in promoting myself, mostly just on creating. I am a well developed artist but I feel I haven't done things quite right coming up. I street perform in Seattle with my 7yr old son, been doing it for a couple months now after moving here from Salt Lake City and it's been Great! We take a sign with our info and do really well in promoting and gaining supporters that way but your videos def motivate and inspire me to take it to the next level on social platforms and to learn more about the business side of it as well (Which is what I need). I subbed not too long ago and I highly appreciate watching your content! I will learn and take action from what you put out and Trust Me, you will soon see us as One of Hip Hop's Greatest Duo's. Much Love and Respect to You Fam!

I've been writing for about 5 years, just got my recording equipment in April and through every song that i finish i see the progress that I'm making, sure i have a few songs that aren't the best but i see where i came from and how much progress i made. Every song that I finish I feel like I've gotten better and better. Keep up the hard work man!
And Adam, thank you for your content. I've seen many of your videos(some more than once) and you're really doing a huge favor for so many people. The world needs people like you. Much love man! Hope you're enjoying your night!

At 18, I went to university to become an actor. I met someone there who showed me my first DAW, and I started trying my own hand at it, but I didn't throw myself into it because I didn't believe anyone would give a shit about what I had to say. I'm now 28 and just starting to take myself seriously in terms of my future in music. And I honestly wish I'd started 10 years ago. I imagine where I could be now if I'd just taken that plunge all those years ago, and it's really hard not to be angry with myself. But this is my brand new RUclips channel, where I'll be uploading my music, I'm actively challenging my self-doubt and my need for things to be perfect (which I'm just starting to see is an impossible and counter-productive goal.) And despite my anger with myself, I want to do what I can NOW, because I'll never be this young again. The gap between 20 and 30 is so much smaller than it looks when you're young, but it's still a decade of experience and growth, if you allow it to be. I've been slow in learning from my (many, many) mistakes, and that itself is a mistake. To quote Elliot Smith: stop stopping and start..

Yeah bro, I know this video is a year old, but perfection can be a motivation killer. Perfectionism in itself can keep you from completing anything. I started music as a guitar player, and not really a great one. I played in a few failed bands, and eventually lost sight of my love for making music. I am just an aging hater, who is just staring to get his drive back at almost 40. I learn how to play drums, somewhat, play bass, somewhat, but I love a wide variety of music. Even though I started with music similar to the say, Deftones or Tool, I have a big love for Hip-Hop and the culture. I've recently put together a little starter studio, have had a couple of hick-ups, but I refuse to give up. I am really glad that I have found this video, because this was the very thing I've been pondering on for the past few days. Thinking I need a product, which I don't have yet, but it'll come. I am a veteran of foreign wars and I have PTSD among other issues, and have wanted to just locked myself in my house and not come out. I use to be a very social person, and I am going to have to push myself just to make those connections, but I am willing to out myself out there, because I give zero fucks what others think, but I can do it with tact. So thank you Adam, for giving me a reality check and the much needed kick in the ass to get over myself. I greatly appreciate it, and maybe one day, when I get a my shit together, I'll have the opportunity to shake your hand and thank you in person. Much love bro.

Definitely put you're music out from the start. I started making beats around 4 years ago on audiotool.com and basically went public with what i was doing almost immediately. It took me 2 years to transition from AT to Fl Studios. Now I feel ready to go commercial and I already have a small audience/fan base to work with in my twitter community

I've been doing this for the last 4 years and now I'm touring. This is still one of the most important aspects of being an artist. Finding new ways to keep your audience interested and building your fan base. Meeting your fans in person is the most surreal experience after all the effort you've put into marketing yourself.

i dont know if it is just real life was happening around me when i really started doing music. I started making beats back in 1988 (yes 1988 with a double cassette deck and a boom box)i learned to chop beats then on my own. I never knew what it was to make beats i been looking for years to just do music as my job. I been out here for a while i been under the name of Arkansawd Off Productions on face book, twitter, reverbnation, ourstage, soundclick, beatstore, soundcloud, cloudkillers you name it i been there in some shape form or fashion. I might have work on and produced a few thousand beats as long as i been doing this music thang. Can you make a video on how to talk to a mixing enginner? Like what are common does or absolute don'ts. e.g. what if I like the overall sound of my mix already, can I say that? Like "I already like the sound of this one, so please don't go to experimental on it" and with other's things like "I'm not sure about this one yet, can you surprise me with something experimental?" or such. Is that a normal conversation to have with a mixing enginner? Or what about asking the enginner to tell you if he/she thinks there's something missing in my beat (e.g. drums aren't good or bassline is missing) before he/she mixes it? Is that a normal thing to ask?
    Would be sooo helpful! ✌
