What the hell lol, watching you drive those nails in was way easier than mine have gone, I’ve wasted two sets of side seals already, they are so unbelievably tight driving the nails in, even when I shaved em on a belt sander. I’m about to fill these dang channels with the right stuff and call it a day.
I don't know if the nails are a factory thing but trusted names like Felpro use them. Great idea to make sure of a good tight seal between the cap and the sides of the block.
I noticed you didn’t use any RTV on the side seals or anywhere on the rear cap. It looks like you just lubed them, I suppose to make it easier to get them to go all the way down. Would you mind telling me how well It sealed? Thanks, getting ready to assemble an FE soon.
Good morning, The drive in seals and pins do a great job of sealing the cap sides to the block. I typically wipe the inside of the block at the vertical cap seam with a thin skin of RTV. Same thing on the outside. Check out the oil pan install part of the series. This one hasn’t been fired up, as the trucks not wired up yet.
A lot of people also put a very thin smear on the horizontal surface of the block that the cap torques down on as a just in case, to prevent seeping after a period of time.

I never turned nuts, was born that way
I like the idea of using the nails to help seal the rear main to the block.
Those who led engine engineers did some pretty amazing things given the materials and technology available to them.

I usually do that torking with a 3/4in air wrench
That’s your choice,
However I wouldn’t do it that way🙃

You didn’t torque the rear main down dude Dude if you walk ago you forget later bad habit
Good eye. I did torque it but the battery had died in the camera. I didn’t get footage of it.
