    I am building a 1962. I agree with mry82. Growing up in califas and living there until my 30s, I miss my friends out there. Sitting around, working on our bombs and talking shit. You are doing a great job on your rebuild. You show plenty of attention to detail, which is rare these days. I am jealous of your 428. I am heading down to just south of Juarez Mexico tomorrow to look at what's supposed to be a 428 cobra jet.

    Nice assembly job, .003 is on the money for a FE Ford. We ran .003 to .0035 for clearance on our race motors. Our 428CJ would turn 7000 rpm and made 580hp. That was back in 1980s. Good luck with your build. 👍👍

    I'm always impressed with your attention to detail when working on vehicles. I don't have any photos to share but there is another step you could have added to removing those fine lines, and improving the overall performance of the crankshaft. You can do this experiment on any hardened and smooth steel surface. Insert a wooden dowell in a drill press (about 3/8 diameter. Apply lapping compound to the metal surface and gently press the dowell into the part with the drill on low to a low medium speed, you'll see a swirl mark materialize. Index the part 1/2 diameter of dowell and repeat, creating an overlapping line of swirls. The lapping compound removes .0001 of metal surface which is negligible for even performance engines. It looks pretty too!
    Note: There is a characteristic related to cast iron parts that have threads, it is called 'galling'. If the interlocking thread surfaces are not completely clean and free of minute chips, those chips buildup and collect at one point which prevents screws from turning in some cases, they will just lock up and sometimes can't even be removed by reversing the screw. One solution we used at Catapillar was applying a drop of dish soap on the screw, which solved the problem.

    • @OmarRamirezGalaxie
      @OmarRamirezGalaxie  2 года назад

      Wow some great information! Never tried the wooden dowel method, I’ll have to look into it. But that description of galling the threads is exactly what it sounds like. Good to know what caused that, I’m sure glad I was careful when it happened

      I would say make sure there are no burrs, make sure it’s clean and put the seal in an offset manor like I did. I used silicone as you saw. Want to make sure it oozes out of the rear back cap. That will let you know it’s sealed. Take your time on it and you’ll have it sealed up.
