I can’t believe you didn’t recommend spinning. It is a good trick after all
If you have missiles on you...
SPIN
When I was getting shot at in Battlefront 2 I pulled that and it actually worked
@@ragingoaktree "spinning" or to name it correctly, aileron rolling, on its own is completely useless as an evasive manoeuvre.
RoboticPope not necessarily, I do it in Battlefield 5 while in my bf109 G6.
I allow the pursuir to come close, some variants of aircraft have missiles while others don’t at all.
If I manage to determine the craft he’s flying and see no undewing rockets then I allow him to close in, take some punishing. And roll the plane around. While rolling suddenly change direction and put the throttle on minimum, turn. open up max throttle and finish the bastard off.
If the guy ur fighting is easily baited and does not keep his distance (not an experienced pilot) this works fairly often :)
@@claudyfocan731 Well that wouldn't be "spinning" on its own like I said . Rolling multiple times while flying on a constant heading with no altitude or speed variation (Anakin's "spinning" in EpI) is a useless defensive manoeuvre.
Dude, as a verified video game tryhard, I am SO excited to further examine this game’s competitive viability. So far, it looks extremely promising.
Like 68, I lead others to greatness
Infinite Omega you guide others to a treasure you cannot poses
I like you need to attack and defend ships
Same here!
Starfighter combat is like football in 3d, if football had lasers, missiles, explosions, shrapnel, death, destruction, and bad lighting... So it is nothing like football, except the tactics can be interchanged. ;D
TL;DR it’s like football except it isn’t like football
MasterGamer23 yup
@@eiselda .. But still a bit like football.
Sweep right bootleg on 3
While the comment is definitely funny, I don't really see it. Football is glorified capture the flag lol
This is the first time RUclips has actually notified me that you have posted a video.
It hasn't for me 😞
Probably because it was your first time clicking the bell
The force is strong with this one...
Yeah same
RIIIING THAT BELLL!
Shit might work if this is in a real situation where people's lives are on the line and all but this is a game that we are talking about and with every fighter game, some madlad is out there flying his support ship owning the enemy team.....
lmao thats gonna be me. Fucking love taking big support ships and juicing them up to fly as fast as possible. 15 years of flying simulators are about to culminate into toxic space dogfighting bullshit. My time is now
@@ghosttraintittiebeaan4879 You sound like the kind of person who would take a Imperial Star Destroyer and strap a ton of engines on it to see how close to dogfighting you can take a capital ship.
Yea...Every shooter just ends up being a first wave of shooting and then a pattern of dying and re spawning that leaves very little space for tactics that are not just flanking/camping or hard turning.
Practicing strategy will greatly improve your outcomes, and I do emphasize the practice part.
Just because you know what to do, doesn't mean you're going to execute them perfectly.
For example, when I'm actually coordinating my team in battlefield by selecting areas of engagement and team composition, we have a MUCH higher chance of winning.
Or when me and a buddy actually do a double engineer duo in a tank and use our Planetside 2 tank tactics, we can dominate the other team.
None of this happened the first time we tried it, but with practice, we gave ourselves quite a huge advantage. It's quite fun taking mediocre personal skill and multiplying it with coordination.
@@poleofversatility7074 What are uglies?
Can’t wait for Squadrons
Love how most of these starfighter tactics are literally just real dogfighting maneuvers with a different name.
It works because Star Wars’s space combat was designed to intentionally mimic WW2 aerial combat, to the point that the initial cut of Star Wars (1971) used Spitfire dogfight footage as a stand-in for the space combat scenes.
I was thinking the same! between situational awareness (see first shoot first) limitations of the attacking and defending craft, assessing position of the craft in relation to one another, position of your wingmen and coordinating/communicating with them, even pursuit curves. At one point I could have sworn Eck was basically describing a Thach Weave. Of course in space you loose some things you would have to account for in atmospheric combat like wing loading and trading altitude with speed, but otherwise this is WWII dogfighting.
Imagine being an military dogfighter in real life then you like destoy every1
@@buschacha Which is why all the more realistic space combat style manoeuvrers like the 180° rudder slide turns look totally out of place in Star Wars space combat.
@@Mhielkema i would sub to that
I noticed the ISD has a bit of trench run disease from that A-Wing, though I'm not sure if maneuvers like the A-wing slash would be all that hugely effective in this game.
Speaking as someone who's played Star Wars flight sims for over 20 years, both in single and especially in multiplayer, I have to say that most of the advice in this video, especially when thinking about how it might apply to games I've already played, is alright in terms of basics but really breaks down at the higher levels of play. Beyond a few general things, maintaining situational awareness, be wary of feints, use evasive maneuvers and learn how to keep your target while doing so, each one of these maneuvers can be countered by an Ace.
A skilled pilot can deliberately jump on the tail of a fighter they know is bait, obliterate the bait, then engage their wingman and eliminate them too. I've done it more times than I can count.
The idea that an Interceptor has to sacrifice its strengths to support a slow moving ally is absurd. I do it all the time with no problems and I doubt Squadrons is going to be any different.
Bombers may be slow but they have a great deal of health and firepower, I've used bombers to hunt interceptors in the middle of open space, I've outmaneuvered A-Wings with a TIE Bomber and taken them out with minimal effort.
I prefer my wingman have a complementary fighter to my own, if you have a bomber, I'll take an interceptor and vice versa, that way we can benefit from the strengths of both while eliminating their weaknesses.
But it all depends on whether or not Squadrons' game mechanics will bear any of this out. We won't know until the game releases.
I've always been of the mind that a well co-ordinated and disciplined team can defeat a larger, better equipped and even better individually skilled but poorly co-ordinated force.
That is, even if you are outnumbered, outclassed, and outgunned, AND taken by surprise/ambushed, you can still win through teamwork.
Might sound like schlock, but I've seen it happen too many times to ignore it.
Hey, come fly with me on SWG Legends.
I agree with most of what you've said, but sufficient skill can be unbeatable obstacle. Ive seen a friend personally take out half the enemy team in war-thunder RB mode by himself.
Are you an Ace Combat MC??
I recognize a lot of my own thoughts in that from my XvT on the IGZ days. That game was mostly 1v1 or 2v2 dogfighting. You have the TI cfack sot at distance in the head to head pass. While jinking to avoid their shots, the 1/3 power turn and burn, and the 2v2 "zipper/snake" passes where "you kill my guy, i'll kill your guy."
I was decent for only having dial-up. XwA was okay. But, i did love when i got an ms joystick with an in built twistable rudder for that game. Young Anakin was only parially correct. Spinning by itself can most times get you killed. Spinning out while turning? That could get you out of trouble sometimes. Most times.
The Ecks wings fleet academy series
2:33 Did Lucasfilm take inspiration from that for one of the openings of Star Wars: Rebels where some TIE Interseptors eviscerated a GR-75 Transport and the A-wings escorting it?
Also I think that Spacedock did a similar video on how to dogfight based on a more general overview of multiple sci-fi franchises.
The dog fights in the star wars movies were inspired by ww2 air combat.
Zahn was helping some with the Rebels show, so possibly!
I'll have to get this book and get back into the X-wing miniatures game...
I love x wing miniatures
@@justchillin654 such a good game! Too bad it's a money sink...

Always have been.
Starfighters are definitely real! Haven't you seen the real documentary series Stargate SG1? 👍
It may be stupid, but in Battlefront 2 I always use cockpit view to get in the shoes of a pilot

ratio is tight
To maintain sustained fire, have two flights trade between breaking and engaging, so while one engages, the other breaks and repositions for another run. This is known as "talking" because the fire goes back and forth between the two flights like two people having a conversation
Ay I'm early hope your having a good day eck
Hello there!
8:53 That pilot has a prosthetic Protocol Droid arm
i love how the title says real starfighter tactics as if starfighters are real
This needs to be top comment, so in the far future when Starfighters are the norm, people can come back and look at this comment
I can’t wait to be in a TIE interceptor painted up like a 181st squadron. Soontir Fel RP FTW
Moff Wibbles haha I did yes, I’m part of 186th for x wing miniatures. Got mixed up, oops
Great video Ech, I love this channel and being able to know you can see this thanks to the channel being small but I still hope you and the lads get the recognition ye deserve
Can’t wait to see you playing Squadrons
I been getting up every morning and doing my micro training haha, also your pretty much the only youtuber ive seen that is actually really good at this game.
love ya vids mate.
I'm willing to make an epic formation flight with the boys in squadrons
7:10 "I'll hit the brakes; he'll fly right by!"
But actually if this game turns out well and has some good depth of combat mechanics I'd love to see some videos detailing best tactics and loadouts for different starships eventually. Also, since Lucas modeled the starfighting in the films off WWII dogfights it'd be interesting to see you try old school maneuvers (like the Thatch Weave) in this game and see how they do!
Some wwii tacfics may apply but many won't since there is a lack of gravity. But it would be cool if you can fly into a planets atmosphere in the middle of space combat where a pilot can use some of these old school tactics. Many of which I learned back in the day using Chuck Yeagers Advanced Flight Trainer. Which by the way didn't work in SWTOR's Galactic Starfighter because no gravity.
Am I the only one who remembered Hot Heads at this part?
I just noticed that Eck reads alot more comments on his second channel than on his main one.
I would love to fly the B-Wing
When the game comes out and you need a Bwing wingman hmu XD
I’d love to see the TIE-Defender as well.
@Star Commander but how would they balance it?
POTATO JUICE
It’s hard to say. They could go with a more standard Defender model, rather than the Elite model we’ve seen in canon.
The standard Defender could have a serious advantage when it comes to speed and weaponry, but falter when it comes to shielding. It could still have shields, of course. They just wouldn’t be as durable as the Reaper’s shields.
If they implemented the standard TIE-Defender, I could see it being a fighter focused on hit and run strikes, using its powerful weapons to deliver a devastating blow, and its speed to escape before the Rebel fighters could retaliate.
@@potatojuice5124 Some sort of asymmetrical mode maybe? But that seems a bit too ambitious for a EA game so probably not.
I’m thinking it would be cool to add a system/ sand box where you had a budget and you could design your own fighter and maybe test it out in a game mode where everyone could us their fighter against each other.
Yeah that’s be cool, where everyone could have their own modifications to their starfighters, so we could all have x wings, but they’re all differently modded.
@@pinkcrewmate8103 an interesting idea
Karla Haworth I think we were l little ahead of their time, because they said you could mod the features of your ship now.
Thanks for the great vid! Looking forward to the game!
To add some stakes, they should add a mode with limited lives or something, so people can use some awesome tactics.
I would recommend spinning, also studying WW2 fighter tactics might be very effective, the thatch weave formation, 2 friendly fighters diangulare to each other , then an enemy comes up behind one the other one can swing around and engage the enemy fighter.
You can also bluff if you are already trapped, charging headfirst would allow you to either turn the tables or escape.
Say that you charge and the enemy breaks, then you have them on the run. If they don’t, but you are brave enough then you can blaze past and behind cover.
Love this content!
Thank you so much Ech
So incredibly stoked for this game. Finally making the VR leap for it.
Communication is absolutely key (voice chat preferred, but the ping communication system works too). Communication doesn't just help your support vessels, even though they do reap the most benefits from it. Whether you're an interceptor, fighter, or bomber (or the aforementioned support), having good communication with your squad makes things so much easier. Good team work, coordination, and cooperation keeps you alive. Hot shots and lonewolves have a less likely chance of making noticeable leeway in a dogfight and especially when assaulting a Capital Ship.
Looking forwards to this! I hope it allows joysticks to work over controllers - I vastly prefer using them for the X-Wing trilogy (X-Wing, TIE Fighter, X-Wing Alliance).
Other possible tactics (which may not be viable in game). From I, Jedi - the reverse throttle hop. Basically killing your forward momentum, pulling 'up' relative to the enemy fighter on your tail, they undershoot/overshoot, get on their tail and either pursue them or take a snap shot. This is similar to the 'Immelman Turn' from WW1 and WW2 combat.
For attacking capital ships (which again may not necessarily be viable in the game) there's the Trench Run Defense. Basically going at full speed alon ga big capital ship (like a Star Destroyer) and skimming the hull - which makes it harder for point defense weapons to hit you, and assists if you're being pursued as the fighter chasing you has to worry about shooting their own capital ship in chase and about it's own weapons missing the target.
History and dogfighting actually is useful here!
Bruh this game is gonna be awesome! Can’t wait! :)
"If you have any friends that are interested in starfighter combat." Its hard enough to find a fiend that likes star wars lol
Why’s that? It’s one of the most popular franchises of all time...
Remember using that book for the X-Wing games...
I am more hyped for this than cyberpunk
As Manford von Richthofen (The Red Baron) once said "the best way to take out the enemy is to make sure they don't see you coming." (I am paraphrasing of course and correct me if I misspell his name, the legend deserves that kind of respect).
Im looking forward to seeing Eck implement these strategy's in the game when it comes out.
3:53 I love how u said how much they got out of this book but didn't shout out the bwing lol
Hi eck, hope you're having a good day :)
very stoked for this game. im worried microtransactions might be a big part, but base gameplay seems solid, so im definitely gonna try and get some friends to play this with me
With all the emphasis on cooperation and 5v5 is making this game sound more and more like rainbow 6 siege in space. And I am very okay with that
Practicing strategy will greatly improve your outcomes, and I do emphasize the practice part.
Just because you know what to do, doesn't mean you're going to execute them perfectly.
For example, when I'm actually coordinating my team in battlefield by selecting areas of engagement and team composition, we have a MUCH higher chance of winning. We did not start out winning.
Then when me and a buddy double engineer duo in a tank, while applying our Planetside 2 tank tactics, we dominate the team. We have hundreds of hours playing in tanks on Planetside 2.
It's quite fun taking mediocre personal skill and multiplying it with coordination.
The tactics in the video are a blueprint to things you can do, but will fail you if you can't coordinate and practice. Especially coordination, that will greatly enhance your ability to win.
RUclips notifies me 20 mins late twitter notifies me 13 hours after a tweet
This title made me laugh so hard. It reminds me of a day in a hobby shop where some gamers were playing D&D in the back. I actually heard one of them say "That's not how *real* Dragons work!"
I literally ROFL!
It's a shame I don't have friends to play with and whenever I go into voice chat I am reported to the Empire
But I thought flying was for droids
It was.....until the dark times came....before the empire rose to take the fallen republics place
I love how the title says REAL Starfighter Tactics and means Starfighter Tactics in SW Legends 😅
as if you imply that starfighters are real
Also a lot of these are WW2 or Modern fighter tactics renamed to fit in lore. Furthermore, canon doesn't have nearly as many manuvers to pull from. Plus a few of these are litterally from the OT. So please don't sound dumb next time.
(1:39) Star Wars: TIE Fighter cutscene right there. 😊
This is where the fun begins !
My biggest complaint is that interceptors are still, in Star Wars, basically dogfighters, as opposed to intercepting bombers, like interceptions are meant too. They also shouldn’t have high maneuverability, since that’s one of the things interceptors are meant to sacrifice for high straight line speed meant to catch bombers before they reach a target. Just a general complaint about Star Wars terminology, game still looks awesome.
Having seen this game im planning on actually studying liget fighter tatics used in current military while adapting it to space combat
Sweet
question: how can i find or obtain and read these legends books especially the thrawn trilogy?
I always come from behind to finish them off. I rarely overshoot unless requested. 😉
I'm mostly interested because it includes VR. I am glad we are starting to see more AAA games including support for VR which IMO lends heavily to the immersion and enjoyment of the game.
These tactics are all well and good, and I'll definitely be taking these into account when I'm working out tactics with my friends and family when this game comes out. That said, we all know there will be that one Luke Skywalker/Darth Vader player that just decimate entire squads by themselves because that's what it feels like to go up against a frigging ace!
I like the intro music, i see what you did there ;)
This is a great pic gamer video keep up the nice content
On the Death Star map from EA's Battlefront 1 during the trench run sequence I actually used the brake to throw some TIEs off. Unlike the movie there are a lot of L turns, and going around the corner and cutting throttle was super effective, especially when you're designated to make the shot lol
Top tier video
I'm really excited for squadrons, considering I love piloting in most games, mainly battlefront 2
I really hope this game becomes an esport after it comes out
i will be praying every night
A good example of squadron composition could be the Battlefront 2015 Rogue one vr mission as you’re ordered to stick close in certain formations while stick close to one other while battling the TIE squadron and the star destroyer
So good, i still have the german version of that Book. Got it back in the X-Wing days. ^^
I played so much X-Wing as a kid, this is going to be a trip
Eck what game should we play to prepare for this? I've been playing Elite Dangerous a little and House of the Dying Sun.
Is it too much to ask for combat in atmosphere be different than in space? Like attacking from a higher altitude using gravity to increase your speed.
Go play War Thunder then. Seems like your cup of tea. Why even comment this on a space Star Wars game?
In atmo dogfights did happen in star wars, so instead of saying go play another game go brush up on sw history brother. For The Republic!
This has the possibility to become an epic ESports game
Reverse throttle hop picture reminds me of a high yo yo maneuver.
Also the prime target cone is just like the fighting cone. A 30 degree to 45 degree cone. The book being sourced knows its stuff
Very useful tactics. I think reverse throttle hob and Tallon roll are nearly similar maneuvers.
Basically space combat between starfighters in Star Wars is much like WW1/WW2 era dogfighting, to the point where much of the starfighter content in the Rebel Alliance Sourcebook are real world aerial maneuvers and tactics that have been renamed to sound sufficiently "Star Wars-y."
I really hope that these tactics can actually help you win, instead of just flying around mindlessly and shooting at each other.
Hopefully so. If not well give it time. Someone given enough play time will come up with sound tactics.
Here's the thing though it's a video game nobody is really gonna use these tactics unless your team is made out of your friends
@@Willyum123 yeah that's what I was thinking would happen. And since they mentioned AI squadrons, how they formulate a strategy? I just don't want it to end up l like bf2 starfighter assault with everyone just shooting everything that moves.
Thats a really good point @EcksToo, I wonder if they will add a Commander slot or game mode kinda like how Battlefield had in a couple of their games?
If anyone played the old games, TIE-Fighter, X-Wing etc, having an interceptor protecting as escort is really good IF the enemy attacks with star-fighters. The ability to quickly fly between the different attack vectors of incoming bombers to intercept them and possible their torpedoes was really important to complete the mission.
I want nothing more than to get really good at this game in VR with the whole over-the-top joystick rig
This game is gonna be awesome
I have a question. If two identical Imperial fleets are engaging each other, what are some tactics to stand out and overcome the even match?
Having done a lot of combat flight simulators, this is basically how to dogfight but with the ability to stop and power distribution management.
Tip: if you have a rapid fire weapon equipped and you're chasing someone who is at full shields, stop firing on them until they stop moving so much. Bait them into thinking that you don't have a good bead on them, then completely unload on them when they stop, this will completely annihilate them before they can react again.
I really dont understand the Z-95 headhunter. Its supposed to be the x-wings predecezor. And the ARC-170s successor. But everything i see about it says its got underwhelming guns and survivability. So what is it an improvement over the arc-170 of?
I have the feeling if Eck gets the game and gets some buds to play it he's gonna straight up start drawing battle plans to eviscerate the enemy team
@EcksToo What are your thoughts on the golden era of Lucas games and starfighter tactics in or for games like X-Wing, Tie Fighter and X-Wing vs Tie Fighter?
Liked TIE Fighter and X-Wing Alliance.
so stoked to dogfight in space with star wars ships and psvr, my hype levels are near maximum.
hype levels OVER 9000
You'll soon discover that Thrawn was wrong about A-Wings on escort duty. He would be right if escort duty meant never getting far from your target, but usually it's best to engage enemies further away. Although really, an escort of 2 A-Wings and 1 X-Wing to remain close is probably ideal.
Well, there are several ways to achieve same goal
Breaking isn't just hitting the brakes, it's sharply turning to dump speed and cause your opponent to either overshoot and reposition, or peel off and turn away
Aaaand the A wing is OP in squadrons.
Literally any serious ace will deploy as the a wing.
Whats the cinematic from 1:38 from?
Most of these maneuvers are actually maneuvers that real fighter jet pilots use.
The scissors is a real maneuver, for example.Usually favours the lighter, nimbler machine.
There is also the boom and zoom. Go up high and dive down on your opponent. Fire off a burst and then immediately throttle up and fly up. Turn around and repeat as needed.
Works well against nimble machines or bombers.
Do you have recommended books for star wars Lor?!? Such as Jedi or tactics or anything in general?!
Today on ecktoo: Eck channels Bolke and becomes Mobius 1
Which book is he referring to? I want to read up on the other maneuvers
7:13 this is what I do in star fighter assault and it makes me feel like a badass
Yeah I even used this in war thunder and it works. Makes you feel like you’re an Ace
5:42 This is an actual tactic used in real arial combat since WWII. Usually called a "wingman" system.
Eck, in the reveal one of the tie pilots sounds very similar to the tie squadron voice actor in EaW
Honestly I love the concept, I just wish that it wasn’t limited to the galactic civil war era and it included prequel trilogy and new trilogy engagements as well.
