One of the best hits ever, n, I'm a tough 72 yr. old Scot, who wears nothing under his kilt, ( well perhaps something pink sometimes ), and it brought a tear to my eye listening to it just now, brilliant.
My Mum, 9th November 2020. I showed her this video a few months ago to remind her of how pubs used to be. This brought her back, watching the news and watching the police beat miners in the street because they wanted decent pay and non-shit conditions working. Margaret Thatcher was a blight upon humanity and I will always celebrate her death. I got to live through that, too, as a kid.
Went to see them in concet 1984. Was heavily pregnant and they signed photo over my BUMP...the lead singer lived incardiff and my daughter saw him often. Sadly he died couple of years ago. Still have their photo and cd. Really good guys, wonderful harmony.
I remember this being the Christmas no1 back in the 80s. Loved it along with Vince Clark’s original for yazoo. Man the 80s was a great time to be a kid

Such an amazing song and probably the best cover ever. In my opinion this cover improved the song which you can't say for most cover versions. Talented guys these were in an era of so much talent and creativity. The glory days...
I only just found out this was a Cover! I'd never heard the Yazoo version. And yes this is a 1000x better! As for best cover ever - Well it's certainly up there but my pick would go to Radiohead's Nobody Does it Better {They did!}.
I love the story this video tells. Six men, strangers, alone save for the company of one another, brought together in an instant over the thought of something that unifies all of us: the one that got away.
This performance draws me back again and again to view. The location - a place in time - long gone, the harmony - just superb - evocative. Thank you guys.
No matter who is performing this, it's still one of the greatest love songs ever written. From Yazoo to the Flying Pickets, it breaks my heart every time.

@gareth roblyn my brother was involved in industrial action with Cardiff Council many years back. Brian pitched up chatting to those picketing, lent his support handing out fliers and trying to rally others. Genuine and kind.
One of my best memories was being involved in the filming of the Welsh soap opera, Pobol y Cwm. During a break in filming, which was on location, Brian Hibbard fired up the karaoke machine in the pub and sang this ( although it was the Yazoo version) right in front of me. It was absolutely amazing! The lead singer of the Flying Pickets singing this about 2 metres away. Although when he finished his words were " f***, that's higher than I remember!". He was such a nice down to earth guy.

A Capella performance at its very very finest! This was & still to this day is, one of my abiding memories of those simple days we called the 1980's. One of the best hits ever, n, I'm a tough 72 yr. old Scot, who wears nothing under his kilt, ( well perhaps something pink sometimes ), and it brought a tear to my eye listening to it just now, brilliant.
Fallen angels brought me here
This music makes the ending even more powerful
Demons? What a moron.
@@Anglo-Brit what's he meant was a Wong Kar Wai's film called Fallen Angels. You should watch it, so nice and beautiful through its cinematography.
@@Anglo-Brit You tried it
yeah
Wong Kar-Wai uses music so perfectly you'd think they were written for his movies. Beautiful song for a beautiful ending.

I miss my late father...he loved this song...Happy Father's day..21st June 2020😌

Made me think of mine as well. They’re probably looking from a window above
This is part of the rich tapestry of British culture and music.
History is Getting less rich by the day, and rewrote it would appear
@@karlosthejackel69 Sadly yes.
who's listening this beautiful song today again thumbs up forever !!!
Went to see them in concet 1984. Was heavily pregnant and they signed photo over my BUMP...the lead singer lived incardiff and my daughter saw him often. Sadly he died couple of years ago. Still have their photo and cd. Really good guys, wonderful harmony.
I am.
Today I heard it for the first time: it was used as the recessional music for a friend's funeral.
@@kimberleywhitchurch2700 Every time you hear this in the future you will think of them.

JULY 2023 - and this is absolutely timeless - well done guys - a beautiful rendition/cover.
2023 and still loving this, my absolute favorite version❤
I remember this being the Christmas no1 back in the 80s. Loved it along with Vince Clark’s original for yazoo. Man the 80s was a great time to be a kid
Loved growing up in the 80's (born in 77, so was 6 or there about's when this reached no1
even better time to be in your 20's in the clubs listening and dancing to the most amazing decade of music
@@eightieslivenow7579 you got that right
Did ye like that?!
Yes it was great unforgettable and happy time😀😀😀😀
Looking from a window above, it's like a story of love
Can you hear me
Came back only yesterday
I'm moving further away
Want you near me
All I needed was the love you gave
All I needed for another day
And all I ever knew
Only you
Sometimes when I think of her name
When it's only a game
And I need you
Listen to the words that you say
It's getting harder to stay
When I see you
All I needed was the love you gave
All I needed for another day
And all I ever knew
Only you
All I needed was the love you gave
All I needed for another day
And all I ever knew
Only you
This is going to take a long time
And I wonder what's mine
Can't take no more
Wonder if you'll understand
It's just the touch of your hand
Behind a closed door
All I needed was the love you gave
All I needed for another day
And all I ever knew
Only you
thank you!!!!!!
👍
God this song is so beautiful that it's almost unbearable. The lyrics, the voices, are just so heart-wrenching. Doesn't really get better than this.

Ich, aber warum stellt immer einer bei jedem Video diese total bescheuerte Frage? Guz the likes?
Takes me back to high school.🥺

Im here love this tune! ❤
Even in november!
This was the best best of the Flying Pickets ensemble. Unmatched vocals. Only you, only them, only at that time. Never again...
A capella at its very BEST!!! Just heavenly... 💖
A capella? Which capella is that? Ohhh ACAPELLA!
@@markfox1545 😂👏😂
It's not exactly 'a cappella': the arrangements are instrumental.
Yeah listening to it now screams samples and a synth. Bahahahaha @@luisrivas9034 It seemed so good at the time
Saw them at Wolverhampton poly just as they went to no1 - they honoured the booking despite the sudden fame and were awesome
Such an amazing song and probably the best cover ever. In my opinion this cover improved the song which you can't say for most cover versions. Talented guys these were in an era of so much talent and creativity. The glory days...
Agree, an amazing cover... Have to say that the fine young cannibals version of suspicious minds is up there as one of the best as well..
Darren Groves quequeeo
Darren Groves who did the original?
Luto Ly thank you
I only just found out this was a Cover! I'd never heard the Yazoo version. And yes this is a 1000x better!
As for best cover ever - Well it's certainly up there but my pick would go to Radiohead's Nobody Does it Better {They did!}.
Another great Song young people will never hear unfortunately :'(
These guys started singing professionally to raise funds for families during the Miners Strike of 1984.

At least something positive for Mrs Thatcher ?
Wow! And then they had their no. 1 hit in 1983! Truly amazing. These things don't happen anymore these days.
This always makes me cry from when I was a little kid until today. I don't care if people take the piss. It's almost beach boys perfection, absolutely heartbreaking 💔. Peace to you all. Merry Xmas.
True mate true
its the first tine i hear it and i can’t stop crying

Listening in June 2024. Love this song was born in 1980. Great music.
Just using their voices to take us to another place. Just beyond perfect
Aint that great - Hello from Berlin, Germany😎
For a cover, they did very smart work with this. They have made it their own with this a capella version. Very cool.
*BEAUTIFUL* song, i never get tired of this song. wish tough that songs like this one stil was made jus as good as this. *Love frm Denmark*
If your old enough to remember when this was out 1983 when you are a very lucky person.. I was 12 year old I don't really remember it but somehow it was always there... Absolutely beautiful...
A great talent who is no longer with us. Its a pity that his passing was overlooked by the media. Barely a mention....sad
Love this song great version
I met Brian a couple of times. Lovely fella, always happy to stop and chat. Sadly missed. RIP butty. 🕊
@gareth roblyn my brother was involved in industrial action with Cardiff Council many years back. Brian pitched up chatting to those picketing, lent his support handing out fliers and trying to rally others. Genuine and kind.
Great as kareoke king Dai in twin town's. Great movie
He was a socialist who spoke up for himself. The media have no interest in commemorating great men like Brian.
Never tire of listening too or watching this video. Brian and the boys are magic
I absolutely agree - Hello from Berlin, Germany 😎
Thumbs up if you're listening to this magic song...
Love this song classic
Comments like this are killing comment sections on old songs. Fuck off mate
Brilliant
it reminds me always that everyone has a touch of greatness. Ido mean everyone :)
Heard this song again after 34 years. Brought out so many memories.
Not many covers are as good as the original but this is superb .
Oh boy, what a wonderful memory! Thanks for sharing.
I still watch pobol y cwm,(peopl of the valley).
@@johnhall8516 I used to be an "extra" on there quite regularly years ago.
I also met and had a couple of cigarettes with Francis Rossi from Status Quo when I was filming PYC. He was filming a show with Owen Money.

Just found this song through the movie Twin Town, the singer here plays a character in the movie. This is why I love RUclips so many rabbit holes. Flying Pickets have a new fan :)
I remmber going to the youth club walking back with mates humming this song ,and thinking life was so so easy ,I love this song and always will
What was wonderful was they did this live on top of the pops during the middle of the Miner's strike - all wearing NUM donkey-jackets.
A Capella performance at its very very finest!
This was & still to this day is, one of my abiding memories of those simple days we called the 1980's.
These guys deserve all the plaudits going, for this is music & proper talent in the raw. Not some overpaid, brainless entity controlled by an egotistical music mogul that hasn't a clue about real & proper music.
Simple clear melodie with sweet voices. Amazing 🌟
Thumbs Up If You Loved It Back Then AND STILL DO TODAY ?

The first time I listened to this beautiful song was on a boat for a trip to an island. it was played by the beautiful daughter of the captain. It's during the dawn, the sky was full of clouds like icebergs, flying fishes were chasing our boat. I was 18. 😊
If you're under lockdown in the UK in year 2000 listen to this music back in the 80s, these days won't come back ever again...
Ya can say that again
😥
Every now and then a song come back into your life and you say ,wow I forgot about this, then you can’t leave it alone for 2 months
I’ve Been playing it everyday for 2weeks now. Wasn’t fussed when I heard it on TOTP back in the 80’s.
This song is simply magnificent.
