    Licorice candy has glycyrrhizin which increases cortisol (stress hormone) levels in the body. This causes hypokalemia. Hypo- low. Kal- kalium (potassium). emia- presence in blood. Potassium signals muscle relaxation. Low potassium, low relaxation. Heart can't relax, then it stops.
    Real licorice candy is not easy to get in the United States. It's not at big chain grocery stores. Most of what you can buy from the big brands is licorice flavored, and won't do this.

    • @chi7818
      @chi7818 3 года назад +58

      XXStrong1 bro it’s easier than you think. All it takes is a quarter pound every few hours and you’re eating 2+ pounds easy.
      I doubt the dude was just pounding 2 pounds of licorice in one sitting like the video, he probably had it as a snack and would just graze on it throughout the day.
      A small bag of licorice candy is $2.99 and 10oz at target so eating 3 of those throughout the day would be cake.
      Or it would be the equivalent of eating 2 monster energy drinks weight of licorice which again isn’t that much. Or 2 pints of ice cream. All this is doable to anyone with a sweet tooth especially if it’s a large man.

      XXStrong1 yeah it’s scary how easy it is to eat large amounts of junk food. A few years ago I started working out and really paying attention to my diet and realized how bad it was without me noticing.
      For example a large coke at McDonald’s is 30oz which is 2.5 cans of regular coke. You get one refill and you just drank 5 cans of coke in one meal. You would never say I drink 5 cans of coke for lunch but getting a large and a refill is normal.

    This is an eye opener for me. I struggled with the same addiction, even contracted Hep-C, and successfully received treatment for both. Thankfully I been clean for 3 years. In the early stages of recovery, it's very common to develop an insatiable craving for candy, as it stimulates the same part of the brain that substances do. It's even worse for alcoholics fyi, because alcohol turns into sugar when ingested. Anyway in the beginning, I would find myself eating at least three theater-sized boxes of Dots a day, sometimes in one sitting. I already have terrible eating habits, but after replacing heroin with candy they became ten times worse. I HAVE cut the consumption in half, but I have much more to go.
    Even though it's not licorice candy, it's still candy, and half of the additives that go into it I can't even pronounce. This is another much needed example of why my efforts must be doubled.🙏♥️

    I found this extremely interesting as in my mid 20's i was diagnosed with a kidney disorder where my kidneys essentially just dump potassium way faster than they should. In my early teens i started waking up screaming in pain because my lower legs would seize up and the pain was unbearable and most of the time i couldnt even stand up to force the cramp out. My dad would run in and help fight the muscle til it let go.
    Until we moved to a city where a doctor who could send me to a kidney specialist existed i was taking 4 giant potassium pills a day that i got via prescription from my dr. They knew the problem was my potassium levels would drop drastically on their own and just didnt know why.
    Now i know why they do it, and thanks to this video, why potassium is so important and why it caused such horrific painful muscle cramps.

He also used to eat a LOT of black licorice, but didn't think of mentioning it to the doctors, because he didn't know the possible health risks. Thankfully, when his wife talked to the doctors the next day, she told them he'd polished off a large box of black licorice the night before he was admitted, so they knew what was going on. (You can buy real black licorice pretty much everywhere here in Germany.) The doctors told him how dangerous his overconsumption of black licorice was, and afaik, he has not eaten any since. The only real potential for damage is from overdose. Which, while admittedly bad, isn't necessarily a danger to all users.
      And, if you live with family or roommates, you can lower that risk even more, by keeping a couple naloxone kits around the house, and educate fam & friends on when to use them.

    Man this story reminded me so much of my cousin who passed back in May of 2016. I don't really know per se what the cause of her low potassium was but it was the main cause of her death. She had suffered from these attacks almost yearly but when she almost turned 40 it was her last attack. She was always scared of going to the hospital and when she did the first time her anxiety took over her and we had to go back home. We tried feeding her bananas, nebulizing her, all that stuff. Eventually it came to a point during the midnight that the people in our house saw her discolored toes and her really trying to breathe. Sadly she didn't make it. However, I'm glad that you were able to shine some light on how this happens and it was an interesting and sort of bittersweet video to watch. 💛💛💛

      There was a boy at my high school who had problems with accidentally trying to eat things that aren't food without really realizing he was doing it. He mentioned it to me freshman year, but said he'd gotten better at controlling it as he got older. My high school subjected students to extreme sleep deprivation due to the high homework loads, (usually 4-6 hours of sleep a night on average, with a lot of days operating on only one or two hours,) and we all started noticing that on days where that guy was really tired he would inevitably start trying to eat pencils, erasers, or paper until someone pointed it out and he realized what was happening. On one occasions during engineering class he almost drank wood glue. So basically everybody started trying to keep an eye on him so he didn't actually poison himself with something, but one day a friend of mine jokingly said he was surprised that he hadn't had to get his stomach pumped at the hospital at some point. The boy replied that he had actually gotten his stomach pumped when he was seven because he got a hold of vitamin gummies and apparently didn't notice he was eating more than he was supposed to. So. Real licorice is famous in Germany and the Netherlands, but I've never seen any kind of warning on products about excessive consumption. They should really add that to the label. Most people don't like it enough to overeat though. It's a bit strange it's sold as candy and not a "medicine", because it also tastes like one.

    Thanks for the post. I remember reading about the dangers of licorice many years ago. Sadly, this info still isn't widely known, so people think that it's just candy, so it can't hurt you. Too many people aren't aware that even the most non dangerous things can be dangerous if misused, or are consumed in large amounts. Even water is deadly if you drink too much of it in a short time because it causes a big imbalance in potassium and sodium in the body. I'm sorry that the man in this story died. He had managed to straighten his life out, and was just overindulging in candy. I truly wish that he had never switched to licorice.😟
