2,4-Dinitrophenol (DNP) is a chemical that is not approved for weight loss. It is a classic case of efficacy, but without safety in the setting of weight loss. This setting of weight loss can be prone to chemical misuse, further exacerbating understanding in human systems. It is not recommended as weight loss can absolutely happen without use of DNP. Christopher is one of 2 - 3 cases documented in literature to have survived an accident with DNP for weight loss. As of 2021, one organization has permission from the US FDA to investigate DNP in some neurodegenerative disorders. These are rare diseases with limited standards of care, therefore that is extenuating circumstances to find anything that could potentially improve patient outcomes.
These cases are patients who I, or my colleagues have seen. They are de-identified and many instances have been presented in more depth in an academic setting. This video is identified with approval of the patient, and he makes an appearance for interview in this video. I was thinking that the story might have related to you after reading the title, and I’m glad again that you’ve managed to make a recovery. Your work is going to help others, being open about mental health as a dude is hard, as I know that from my own experience but is something that we need to do more to ensure others wont suffer in silence.

It's wrong. I watched his entire video.
He has permanent kidney damage. His kidneys excrete a lot more fluid than what would be normal requiring him to go to the bathroom every 30 minutes.
That's not exactly a full recovery.
As a non-American, the idea of turning away an ambulance when I'm in a dangerous medical situation because it might _cost too much_ is just...terrifying.

Yup no system is perfect. I also hear of the wait times with single payer healthcare and those also sound horrifying.
I wonder if there is a place where you can get seen relatively fast and for relatively inexpensive.

@@justinabajian1087 That 'long wait time' thing gets exaggerated a lot, generally by those who have motivation to support the kind of systems seen in places like the states. The states has about average wait times compared to other countries, regardless of the overall medical systems in place.

@@justinabajian1087 for what exactly? A&E waiting times are around 30m-5h here depending on how bad your case is. my mum was seen to in 2h from her leg injury stemming from insect bites
We as a society HAVE to start talking about body dysmorphia and EDs in men. Not enough people realize that things like pushing yourself too hard in the gym or trying "fitness hacks" to lose weight can be forms of self-harm. Yet this huge wave of "diet culture" is so prevalent in the US. I hope there comes a day when everyone has a healthy relationship with their bodies.
There's so much money to be made in the diet industry and that's all it is they don't care about your health they don't care what's going to happen to you all they care about is how much money they're going to make off of it. We need serious conversations about how we can revamp our Healthcare System so that we don't need these kind of diet and supplements and harmful drugs that just destroy your body. I actually think we should imitate the EU Health System for Medicare for all because that is a wonderful program.

Self destructive behaviour would be going out and partying when you should be at work / school the next day, or gambling addiction. He was doing this to cope with the loss of his father and body issues, it’s self harm

I knew a guy in college that tried this. It made him miserable and extremely hot and sweaty. He dropped some weight and didn't have major issues but he measured it carefully and took a low dose for a month. I kept trying to talk him out of it since I was a chem major and knew it was horrible stuff. He was lucky and didn't suffer any (known as of yet) health problems from it.
This guy? Clen, DNP, thyroid hormone and more all stacked together for 8 MONTHS STRAIGHT? I am really glad he pulled through. He's one in a million lucky to survive that. That's a crazy stack of stuff to put your body through. Not sure I've heard of anyone using Clen, ephedrine, AND DNP together, that's insanity.

Yeah, usually people calculate very well in the scene, and start carefully on a low dose, safeguarding against double doses especially with DNP's half-life, only doing it in winter depending on the climate, mitigating adverse effects, etc. In fact, everybody on these forums will try so hard to convince newbies NOT to take it if they're complete beginners. Yes, this drug has been used in the past as an effective weight loss prescription, but one needs to understand it completely before doing it and newbies are not shared into the source for dnp unless they demonstrate they know how to use it and honestly, wield Its power.
And herein lies the biggest problem: eating disorders and body dysmorphia. Not only these must be treated and dealt with, but in men? It's seen very differently and it's truly dangerous. I'm sorry for CE, and I'm sorry for the people who've suffered with eds, and with improper use of dnp. It shouldn't be like this.
The T3 in combo with the other 2 is kore concerning than the ephedrine imo...

"It's no more dangerous than taking aspirin/acetaminophen." When I was a paramedic I heard that quite a bit for a lot of various substances. I would point out how narrow the therapeutic ranges for ASA/APAP are and that they are actually very, very dangerous, and were one of the most common accidental poisoning/overdose substances I saw. Patients never really seemed to believe me though.
But in this case, DNP is indeed more dangerous than aspirin. Acetylsalicylic acid affects one metabolic pathway by targetting one enzyme, DNP screws your whole metabolism even at s "safe" dose.
It's odd to think about how normal taking acetaminophen is, while it's actually one of the more toxic substances in my house.
Considering how OTC pain relievers are marketed and added to so many medications, it’s not surprising to me at all that so many people think they’re innocuous.

As someone who has struggled with an ED for most their life, I can see why he tried it, I used to use stimulants to control my appetite too. My heart goes out to him and I’m so glad he’s doing better.

@@myopicmind6300 he should absolutely not have. Don't consume carbs while on dnp because it will increase how much heat you produce. But then also don't combine dnp with any other weight loss drugs. DNP is the nuclear option.
I had a hemorrhagic stroke caused by 15 to 20 years of extremely high blood pressure.
I spent a week in the neuro unit in the hospital, being given blood thinners to clear out any clots, and then I spent three weeks at an inpatient physical therapy center.
I lost about 20 pounds from a month of hospital food.
I wouldn't recommend the hospital stay diet approach. The results were impressive but the food was like being out in the field in the army, being served T-rations.
I've had a few hospital meals, worst was the lukewarm porridge/oatmeal that tasted like wet cardboard with chunks. Can't even imagine having to eat hospital food for that long
@@heyo9343 idk if it depends on the hospital, when I had to spend months at a time there whenever my mother got sick (she didnt know english very well). sometimes she would share what she couldnt finish and while yea it aint great, its still alright, bland at worst. maybe just me not being a picky eater. tbh if it just took a month of hospital food to lost 20lb, i would do it. obviously not IN said hospital.
The hospital here has room service and you can order as much of whatever you want. And it's all really good! I probably gained a pound or two lol.

I had a minor surgery once & was in hospital for 2 days. The food was awful! I remember when my Dad was in the hospital, he’d call me or my brother & ask us to bring him McDonald’s cause the food was so bad 😅
I’m glad this was covered though I’m disappointed that this case wasn’t explicitly identified as an eating disorder-it’s really important to talk about this through that lens, since the media only portrays cases of anorexic young women. Men struggle with body dysmorphia and ED too, and so too do people who are fat, and people who “look healthy.”
While this is entirely fair, ChubbyEmu is a PharmD, not a psychiatric professional, so I find it very reasonable that he didn’t attempt to make a diagnosis!
I think also putting an eating disorder label on it makes it seem like it'll only happen to you if you have (or rather sit to having) an eating disorder. It's very easy to deny.
@@deinemutter918 tjat makes no sense. by that logic "labels" (diagnoses) like schizophrenia or bipolar shouldnt exist either cuz someone could have subclinical manifestations of either and do that exact same thing, deny that they have any problem at all, since rheir issues dont meet that clinical threshold to be a particular disorder or some kind.

There's a difference between having a problem and admitting to yourself (and others) that you have a problem. Schizophrenia, one of your own examples, causes a paranoia that makes patients unwilling to see a professional because aside from the typical "I'm not crazy" spiel and fear of being locked up in a psych ward that a lot of people get, they also truly believe the professional in question is an alien wanting to suck their brains out through a tube or whatever.
Eating disorders do a similar thing in a more subtle way - the brain ends up believing that being 'too thin' or 'too muscular' or whatever is not possible, that no matter how much people compliment you you're still not good enough, you always have to go further. And people do compliment you for losing weight (at least until you start looking like a skeleton), which reinforces in your mind that what you're doing is *good* - so a lot of people with eating disorders don't want to admit, to themselves or anyone else, that they have an eating disorder. They *want* to continue losing weight without interference, and they will resist the idea of seeing a therapist, psychologist or what have you. The brain is just that invested in protecting its routines and patterns. And if you're anorexic but refuse to let yourself see that you're anorexic, then you can read a million articles about "stuff anorexics do" and go "this does not apply to me" - that's what @@deinemutter918 is referring to.

I actually had a biology exam in high-school were we had to explain why DNP was so dangerous. Thanks to biology, my teacher, and now Chubbyemu, I know why it's so dangerous and to never take it.
Just in case anyone didn’t know, the “pore” in the mitochondria is called ATP Synthase which is an enzyme, that is imbedded in the mitochondrial membrane, that uses one of the protons in the gradient to do phosphorylation(adding phosphate to something) on one of the ADP to ATP which is very effective and this is where a lot of the body’s ATP(energy) comes from. Very little ATP comes from glycolysis which is where Dr. Bernard said break down more sugar 10:58. Actually you need two ATP to create 4 ATP and 2 pyruvate molecules(3-carbon molecules) from one glucose molecule for glycolysis. This is why your body burns lipocytes(fat cells) to get more energy when the proton gradient is not formed due to DNP. The whole process of donating electrons to the ETC(electron transport chain) with chemiosmosis to turn adp into atp through the ATP synthase is called oxidative phosphorylation.

Just want to mention, I sweat at a socially unacceptable level all day, every day, 24/7. Our lizard brains tell us, “that person is red and sweaty, that means this person is ill, I feel the need to flee so that me and my family are protected so we can ensure future generations!” It sucks so hard to have people always assume you’re on drugs, sick, homeless, or up to no good that I’m surprised he would take that stuff and go in public. It’s not a good feeling.

Anyone else feel a wave of relief when you hear "They made a full recovery"?
I was on stimulants for ADHD and I accidentally double dosed one morning because I had taken my initial dose and made the mistake of napping right after. Woke up in that post-nap daze, popped them again and my heart rate almost immediately went through the roof. My heart was beating so hard I could feel it in my toes and it sent me into a panic attack. I quit the meds shortly thereafter.

This poor guy clearly had an eating disorder. Even before he started taking DNP he was skipping school to exercise. Huge red flag. An ED is often associated with women but men can get it too, and as someone who's suffered from one myself, it can cause you to do all sorts of risky things to lose weight.
I thought about this too, especially because he would bounce between being heavily overweight to heavily lean.
Eating disorder sounds like the person is a victim through no fault of thier own. Where the fuck is dicspline and self control ever recognized in america? sheesh.
@@dylanmcshane9976 As someone who almost died 6 months ago from anorexia, no. Eating disorders are not about "willpower" in any way, shape, or form. It's a method of control, punishment, addiction, and it's often a method of self harm or a coping mechanism for trauma. It can also be a symptom of other mental health disorders, like DID, OCD, BPD, etc. Anyone can get an eating disorder, not just people in the US. Having an eating disorder is serious and life threatening, so please take care talking about ED's.
@@dylanmcshane9976 actually people with EDs are often way too disciplined. To the point it harms them. I was like that. It takes "discipline" to starve yourself and over exercise. But it robs you of every joy in your life, there was a time when every second thought in my head was about weight. Life is about SO MUCH MORE than what you weigh.
The fetishisation of "discipline" and the belief by type-A people that they are weak if they don't lose enough weight, is what causes EDs like this.
Fortunately I'm recovered now but it took 10 years.

I really liked hearing the patient's side on this one. When things are depersonalized, it's easy for people to make jokes about the Darwin Awards or whatever. But hearing the thought process can better help us understand why people might take actions like this, and can help us understand that many people are susceptible to this without the proper information.

@@global8198 it’s not the sugar intake, it’s the fructose intake. Fructose isn’t easily digestable so the body stores it right to the liver, but when you eat 10 apples a day which equals to roughly 110 grams of fructose per day, this excess fructose will be turned into fat, which will cause fatty organs and potentially cause heart disease, but fatty liver is more likely.

These days with the CoVid still roaming in our society, some people may think that being hooked up to a “respirator” (respiratory machine, or whatever it is called) is just getting tube down you throat for a while and when the danger is over, it’s just to walk out of the hospital.
However I read a description of what has to be done and the hard work of getting back to life afterwards, with months of training to get the body able to sit, stand and walk normally.
On the issue in the video - a friend wrote a booked called “There’s no idea”, meaning there’s no single and SIMPLE idea that will solve all our problems. Loosing weight, getting control of our personal finances, getting fit for a Marathon, stop smoking, stop harming ourselves isn’t a ONE-STEP PROGRAM, or a pill or an app on the phone. We say in Sweden “genvägar är senvägar”, which could be translated into “short-cuts are late routes”.
So, I found a new channel 👍. Interesting!

Yeah, I seriously hope that in the future Chubbyemu does more interviews like this or shows more clips that truly depict the severity of these incidents. Chubbyemu's narration is pretty much perfect but his content could do with some of these people actually talking about their experience. Thank you for giving some sound advice regarding the role that making small, consistent changes plays into losing weight. It's super tempting to go all in in order to see dramatic results quickly, but it is so ineffective in the long-run.
This story is a good example of male body image issues. Men can feel the same way as women do about their bodies, but they don’t realize it or don’t want to talk about it. Please talk to someone if they show signs of this extreme or if you feel the same!

I’m a psychologist and I’ve had three patients who experienced something like this. All three of them had recently lost a parent shortly before this happened.

I love your content and you effectively explain technical concepts. CE’s story is similar to mine, only different drugs and psychosis. I have narcolepsy and complex apnea. After being prescribed armodafinil I looked for stronger and more effective results to prevent my “sleeping spells” after I developed a tolerance.
Eventually I “crashed” , and corrected my self diagnosis and treatment.

@@itismedio1684 I've had people in my family receive life-saving open heart surgery in the last couple years alone, as well as numerous hospital and doctor visits. We don't pay a cent because we are a union family and our union collectively bargained for the best private healthcare available in the US.
If single-payer/ACA healthcare was passed in this country, we would lose our private healthcare and be stuck with much worse coverage, higher premiums, and would have to wait in lines like the Canadians and Europeans do. I shouldn't be punished because my family worked hard and was involved in a dying organized labor movement that could ensure you actually get quality coverage.
It is so incredibly important for us to remember that men struggle with eating disorders too. Mental illness knows no gender.

The problem with it is that it takes quite long to work, so people take more because they can't feel it working, and then all of a sudden it all hits at once.

Yes, I agree. Healthcare cost is ridiculous in America, it's for profit, even though hospitals are non-profit.
In 2006, the volunteer ambulance sent my hubby a bill for 1k. He had a heart irregularity. It's probably 2k now.
The serious problem is that people are due to social mores left over from the great depression and the attitudes that it instilled in the population. The fact is that cost is only one of the things that discourage people from seeking help from medical professions sooner rather than later, there is also the concept that seeking such help is a sign of weakness. This ironically causes medical care to be more expensive here because by the time that many people actually get help the problem is much harder and more expensive to treat.
Socialized Healthcare is not free except to those who are totally dependent on other social programs as well. If you pay into a socialized system, you are paying for it even when you dont use it at all. Its not free though the per incident cost may be low or non existent it also has limits to what it can accomplish.
Makes you wonder how many die each year just because they didn't want to be stuck with a life-crippling bill.

@@lilstardrops I've read those same forums, even the specific thread CE showed a screenshot from in this video, no one lied and he absolutely knew what was happening (unless he was just too out of it). Every resource I've ever seen on DNP pounds into you that this compound builds up in your system and will flat out cook you alive if you take too much. He was likely taking a borderline dose and then he accidentally doubled up. I get it accidents happen he was desperate and this is a dangerous thing to do. It's an insidious drug that provides fast results, and more results the more you take, right up until it kills you. However, I think it's a bit unfair to categorize the people in those forums as evil. Nothing happened to this guy that wasn't entirely expected from what he was doing and the people on these forums aren't the ones selling the compound.

As a biologist, it just sounds to awful to me that someone would block the activity of his or her mitochondria (powerhouseofthecell). Mitochondria are not only important for making ATP but they also control the levels of different other molecules called co-factors and co-factors are used in numerous processes in the cell. For example, co-factors are important to regulate the activity of genes (I made a video about this). I can't just imagine how many processes might be influenced by blocking DNP. So no no to eating 2,4-Dinitrophenol!
Would DNP block other function of the mitochondria (powerhouseofthecell) through eliminating the proton gradient, or just that specific activity of producing ATP?

The real villians here are the US medical and legal establisments.
To be fair to the US legal system, many states (such as Texas, my state) have specific laws that grant immunity from prosecution for drug related crimes and alcohol related crimes (e.g. minor in possession) when seeking medical assistance, precisely because they don't want to deter people from seeking medical help when they need it.
Unfortunately, few people are aware of these laws, so there are often cases where people don't call for help when they should, even though they have nothing to fear from the law. As here, the patient was incorrect--his use of this chemical wasn't illegal--and his unfounded fear made him reluctant to tell the doctors what they needed to know.

Another great video with both educational and drama of entertainment: Good pacing, interesting & relevant topics, etc. It's great to see you working with other channels too! It was engaging to hear the person speaking about his experience. I think people's thoughtful comments on why people do these things and about such situations can/could be helpful to people too. It's probably fun to research these situations and make the videos, I'd think, as well as perhaps getting some popularity and income.
