Why is that a common thing amongst teachers? And they constantly try to come close to your table in elementary school and get near you and the bad breath almost knocks you over, and then you go home n tell Mom and Dad and they say, "well hunny you'll just have to deal with it! Ricin is being investigated as treatment for cancer? Damn that would've made a great plot twist for Breaking Bad! Imagine Walter White trying to commit suicide using ricin and instead treats his own cancer. He becomes a hero sentenced to death. He killed dozens of people but saved millions with his research on ricin that led to the discovery of a cure. :) Man Vince Gilligan you suck at writing endings..
JunksBv I didn't even spoil anything lol. That's how I would've liked it to end not how it ended. With Walter White making a huge breakthrough in science that would save millions of lives. But since he doesn't care much for his own well being it would take her daughter or son to be threatened by a brain tumor to push him to research ricin more seriously.
Vulcan Hades You said Walter White tried to commit suicide, which I'm pretty sure is the spoiler they're talking about, not the whole ricin curing cancer thing.
Wow, so Walter and Jesse would have been deep in Mexico by the time Tuco died. Walter would have known this too, being the brilliant chemist he is. Plot Hole?
not at all. their original plan was to set up a meeting with tuco to poison him with their "new" meth recipe, then leave and wait for tuco to die (as opposed to tuco dying within half an hour, in which case tucos buddies would surely be able to recognize whos responsible for their bosses death and avenge him), but they were abducted before they could do that. now, if u were in walters position, why wouldnt u try poisoning tuco, even if he was going to take u to mexico? i mean, he could easily kill u (or jesse) if he had one of his "phases" and is still posing a threat to everyone around him.
What I want to know is why a plant would want its berries/fruit to be poisonous. Seeds, yeah, that makes sense, but why the fruit itself? Wouldn't that discourage consumption and therefore impede the spreading of seeds?
Many plants spread their seeds in other ways. Keep in mind that the fruit of a plant is there to provide extra nutrients for the seed. It just happened that some tasted good to animals, so plants evolved around that and made seeds that could survive digestion.
It's the seeds of apricots, peaches and apples that contain cyanide, not the fruit, but that doesn't mean that some fruits aren't poisonous. It just depends on the strategy the plant uses to ensure seed dispersal. A plant that depends on animals to eat the fruit and disburse the seeds in a birds guano (AKA chalk, poop etc.) wouldn't be likely to have toxic fruit for example. There is a lot of variety out there, kind of fascinating, don't you think?
The more I watch these videos the more I come to believe that Nature is really just one big free-for-all. As human beings we sometimes make the mistake of imposing logic on the natural world; we look at it or refer to it as if it's a unified, singular being, and that's a mistake. "Nature" is rudderless, reactive, without focus other than the most basic of principles: survival at all costs.

I've been ID ing mushrooms for about 6.5 years. It is easy to ID the amanitas such as the death cap and avenging (or destroying) angel. Harder to differentiate is the deadly gallerina and some of the pholiotas. They also are LBM's with similiar habitats. Always do a spore print!
Very good information. Whilst hunting poachers in Africa I drank water from a hot spring. Long story short, life for me 2 days later was near the end, fortunately I got evacuated. The locals gave me a poison of two drops a day to keep me alive or kill me for a week as an antidote. 3 drops were deadly, these good people knew the poison antidote and one month later I walked again. My blood was later sent to South Africa for Analysis and they suggested a very rare toxic pathogen that I had injested.
How does water hemlock (cicuta maculata) compare to castor beans in toxicity? This grows in my area (CT). I always thought water hemlock was the most poisonous plant in North America.
Cicuta contains Cicutoxin, which is a non-alkaloidal acetylenic compound. This compound is definitely of lower toxicity than Ricin (LD5O of Ricin is approximately 6 micrograms/kg body weight, injected dose). Cicutoxin has an LD50 of 2.8 milligrams /kg of body weight.,which means it requires about 500 times more Cicutoxin.
Although the LD50 is lower than the mushrooms shown, the False Morel has some fascinating effects when it comes into contact with stomach acids, most notably the production of monomethylhydrazine, also known as rocket fuel.

Antediluvian Spy Learning how to do it and being able to successfully do it in a non-laboratory setting without poisoning yourself are two entirely different things.
Yes ,if you want to kill someone. Scientifically, it's extremely interesting!
I like it how he just seems so cheery despite the topic.
when I'm watching videos like theese, I already feel as if the NSA is watching me
Nah be real it's probably the FBI
I read it as nasa lol
They ARE watching YOU in particular. ;-D
Truth be told, they are watching EVERYONE by monitoring all cell phone transmissions, messages, e-mails, etc. This IS happening.
:)))
Or an author/students
Diana Ziegler u could be right also u might be a lab rat
Wow, I was just reading that strychnine used to be taken in low doses as a stimulant (like drinking coffee). But it can still kill you from long term build up, apparently, so I’m sticking with coffee!
Are you trying to tell me to stop eating cyanide for breakfast
Yes, just sprinkle it on your cereal.
Yes.
Watch your fucking health.
A can of bleach a day keeps the doctor away.
Volvirth so can a gun
Volvirth actually no, unless you want to be close to a medical examiner
Dont listen to them, Apple seeds, pear seeds don't contain enough of the chemical to kill you.

What about mitichlorians?
Right... Now I'm scared to eat, breathe, go outside or do anything else.
My first episode ever. Every now and then I come back to watch it, it never gets old.
Mushrooms got some of the cooler if not more badass sounding names. Death Cap. Destroying Angel.
Now, that's some real metal shit right there.
Andrew Lameee
Destroying Angel and the Death Caps. It has a nice ring to it.
Wow, I never knew the strychnine tree would be that DEADLY! Living in South-East Asia, and as a kid, I used to go around plucking these orange "berries". I knew they were poisonous and so did all the kids. So we usually use them as projectiles for our own version of "snowball" fight. Heck, folks over here basically use these trees as decorations for landscaping; as for kids, a cheap and fun way to literally die for.
I dont think so !
Even the leaves when is in contact with skin causes itchy rashes at once........
Are you referring to honeysuckle berries? (Lonicera species)?
I was just blown away by the facts in this video. I often wondered why so many people had an allergy to Almonds and many other types of nut now I have some idea as to why it might occur
I enjoyed the film. Thank you
My kindest regards

"The Apothecary Diaries" restarted my age-old curiosity for natures poisons.
I´m happy to watch the new season next year. ^__^
nature ....the ultimate badass
+MrAdvance2go agreed
If you hate nature Lord hate you and they want you to take bath of ebola
One of the best informative videos I have ever seen on You Tube.
Lots of info and presented in a flowing articulate style that was fast enough not to bore the viewer but articulate enough to be followed easily. I wish this team great success in their future projects. I will subscribe to this quality channel right now.
Best wishes

Well, now I'm afraid of umbrellas.
the lab mouse is symbiotic with us, but the kind where one benefits and the other is harmed, very harmed.
.
Lol, you must have failed 6th grade science if you think that. Sad, very very sad.
I think you mean that humans are rat parasites?

Eggs. Eggs can carry the diseases and bacteria carried by the mother. NOTHING IS SAFE.
i think sugar is safe...
im with stewpid But then if you eat too much, you'll have issues with blood sugar or diabetes. Stick to soylent or not eating at all.
mmm could....
milk be safe?
Forget the extra hour of school. This is biology class in 10 minutes! Awesome.
Some of my old Teachers in School definitely had the most toxic breath one can imagine.I dunno how i survived.
Why is that a common thing amongst teachers? And they constantly try to come close to your table in elementary school and get near you and the bad breath almost knocks you over, and then you go home n tell Mom and Dad and they say, "well hunny you'll just have to deal with it! Just look away!" Bwahahahaha!!! What s joke! Especially when they hover over little ones constantly! So you may just wish to tell kids early to spray so ñme cologne or perfume on their sleeve and put it bear their face for comfort. Lol! That's what I did!! I'll never ever forget this old substitute teacher named Mr. Bryant!! He was mean and his breath was kickin' and you could smell him coming! He gets the gold medal 🏅 for the worst breath I ever had to smell! Just straight poopy!! 💩🤢
Lol. Same here
babies under 12 months old should never eat honey. do doctors even tell mothers that?
None of these beat my favorite flavor though. Good old Clorox.
I thought you were gonna mention that in extremely small doses botulinum toxin can be used to cure muscle spasms and as Botox. And you mentioned most of the LD50s for oral ingestion, but for botulinum the 1ng/kg is only true for intravenous injection.
Can cause bad reactions! I and my sister had them!
I don't know why my feed gave me this today it's a 10 year old video of Sideshow with Hank and now he's recovering from cancer which I hope is a complete recovery and he stays clear of cancer cells forever just another bit of irony
I remember watching a documentary on the assassination when I was about 6. I grew up terrified of umbrellas.
KILLER UMBRELLA
I read a book on spies with that story in it. I got scared of 'em too.
lol
Mary Leigh Lear ROFL you should grow up being terrifies being successful.
why are people always so stupid paranoid?
The umbrella didn't kill him so much as being successful did.
I grew up watching horror movies, and I grew up not being terrified out of nothing I guess you need to grow up more, ...
no worries, it's not likely you'll be targeted by any organizations willing to go to such lengths to kill you
Dunno what to comment so here's the recipe for a glass of water:

0:31 anyone else thinking of breaking bad
Interesting how he ended it with "one day might target cancer cells" and now he's dealing with cancer.
I absolutely love the way he can speak in such an optimistic tone about death and deadly things :D
great, now I'm going to be afraid to eat honey _^_
Well you could probably fight it off
Connor Steppie yeah i eat it anyways
+iNezumi gonna guess youre more than a year old? yeah? youre safe then
+iNezumi I'm more scared of umbrellas.
Jonathan Hsieh
holy jebus, what the fuck
Is.. Is anyone else paranoid after watching this.
It says top five poisons- if you've seen something worse than I guess it's an illness or disease.
Exactly.
I'm only 1 minute in and I'm already scared.
I was just thinking "how is it we've managed to live this long?"
Our bodies are quite magnificent.
Thanks for continuing to make such informative and fun videos!
I think that umbrellas should be banned, especially assault umbrellas.
what happens when it rains and you want to be dry-ish
szayel aporrogranz Would you rather be dead and dry-ish or alive and wet-ish. It has been proven that umbrellas can be used as deadly weapons against spies and defectors. In case I'd ever become either, I would feel much safer in a world free of dangerous bumbershoots.
Woyam Chny but so can alot of daily-use things its the wilder not the object thats dangeruos
szayel aporrogranz Did you take my comment seriously? Have you no sense of irony or humor?
Kimberly Meehan Aren't you the clever one!
Man Vince Gilligan you suck at writing endings..
SPOILER ALERT!
dick
JunksBv I didn't even spoil anything lol. That's how I would've liked it to end not how it ended.
With Walter White making a huge breakthrough in science that would save millions of lives. But since he doesn't care much for his own well being it would take her daughter or son to be threatened by a brain tumor to push him to research ricin more seriously.
Vulcan Hades I'm pretty sure JunksBv was being sarcastic, anyway thats how i perceived it :P
Vulcan Hades You said Walter White tried to commit suicide, which I'm pretty sure is the spoiler they're talking about, not the whole ricin curing cancer thing.
You haven't even watched Breaking Bad lol.
Dude! The good news is that nature gave us thistle!
If the seeds we're the only poisonous part say goodbye to that plant species if it's seed is small
Well, maybe it doesn't want you to eat it because it has other pollinators specially selected to do so.
Many plants spread their seeds in other ways. Keep in mind that the fruit of a plant is there to provide extra nutrients for the seed. It just happened that some tasted good to animals, so plants evolved around that and made seeds that could survive digestion.
Duncan MacLeod
That makes sense, thank you :)
That sounds like logic to me.
that is logic. It's just different logic
What an absolutely superb and enlightening video. Thank you so much.
Awesome - man you talk fast and articulately! Well done - very informative, really enjoyed- thanks!

Must resist...
ItionoBen incredibly, u're quite down in the comment section, and before you I haven't still found one single comment thread about this topic. Let's see after you. I came here for your same motivation tho
ItionoBen I see none.
I was afraid to be given castor oil once but I didn’t taste anything. Perhaps, I couldn’t taste it because I’d been crying so much over worrying about the taste which blocked my sinuses therefore keeping me from tasting very much.
_*strychnine tree pic pops up_
Me: Looks like a normal tree to me, i can find those in a park lmao
Hank: My advice is to stay _as far away_ as possible
Me: *Oh.*
ricin reminded me of breaking bad
That was really interesting and informative. Thank you for the presentation, and maybe you saved some lives here.
Clever click bait that ends up actually not click bait.. nice work. And interesting to learn the ones i never knew
I love knowing much of this stuff and yet learning much more.
I wish he was my teacher...
When you said the most deadliest bacteria is common I said oh well that's just great
me and my buddy picked mushrooms one time while working at a cattle ranch, we didn't know what we were doing, so we went to our buddies house with a bag of cow shit mushrooms, and wanted to know if we could eat them, and my buddy was convinced by our "friends" to eat one, while I was still looking them up, then I was a pussy for not eating one too and then I was the asshole for reading off the terrible side effects of eating poisonous mushroom, because I was pressed for a reason after saying no I don't want to eat any, well no one died or got to sick but remember kids, just because some dumb shit says do it. doesn't mean you have to go first. or ever, fuckem!
You must be kidding.. Many mushrooms are safe to eat and very tasty.. Many restaurants serve mushrooms to their diners.. Several kinds of them are available in grocery stores..
+Robin Conkel-hAnnan no he picked them like the ones that grow in damp places
+Robin Conkel-hAnnan look it up some time, there's tons of different types of mushrooms, and just a few are sold in stores and for the most part the ones that arent sold in the store can fuck you up, or kill you, they're some nasty things, the psychedelic or shrooms, have a few "cousins" that are damn near exactly the same looking, but they will shut down your liver and kill you with out medical treatment, some are called death caps, and it's for a reason!
ha, your friends were trying to get some magic mushrooms
I've been ID ing mushrooms for about 6.5 years. It is easy to ID the amanitas such as the death cap and avenging (or destroying) angel. Harder to differentiate is the deadly gallerina and some of the pholiotas. They also are LBM's with similiar habitats. Always do a spore print!
The awful part of this is all the innocent animals that were used to test them and gain this information. ☹️
How else are we supposed to learn?
Ahhhh the classic umbrella jab.
no, the classic umbrella gun.
I feel like I should be taking notes :/ so much info!
Oh my god i know right. wheres my pencil. Hand me my paper.
YEAH
future assassins. haha! now where's my umbrella?
I'm scared to eat canned food and honey now...
I'm probably going to eat canned food tonight though XD
Did you miss the part where he said, 'if it's no properly cooked?'
Just drop it in some free radicals. You'll be fine.
Look at the statistical chance of death by canned foods. That should do it.
My blood was later sent to South Africa for Analysis and they suggested a very rare toxic pathogen that I had injested.
why tf u hunting poachers bruh
We need more poacher hunters. Thank You.
@ammaralkhatib5419 . It's fair game. They're hunting so why can't we do the same.
Damn I actually play with that fur ball ( castor ) when I was young didn't know it's poisonous..
I love it how Hank talks about how deadly a toxin is with a happy face. Lol
I love recommending

to science-fans. Silly hobby, some argue, but whatever! Interested?

Me: Dead.

How does water hemlock (cicuta maculata) compare to castor beans in toxicity? This grows in my area (CT). I always thought water hemlock was the most poisonous plant in North America.
how about oleander. aka zakum, zaqum, zaqhum
😮
Poor mice. All the things they have to put up with and no one even remembers their contribution.
