Outraged baby flying-fox is rescued: this is Dingo

  • This video is a compilation of videos of Dingo (from 2017), from rescue until he left my care.
He was possibly one of the most outraged babies I've ever rescued, and continued his complaints (about everything including my deodorant and the weather) for three quarters of the way home.
Dingo is an 11 week baby Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who crash landed on a tiny balcony and stayed there for 2 days, until the homeowner realised he was unable to leave.
Bats can't stand up so they have great difficulty getting out of enclosed spaces, and given that he was unable to climb the balcony to get enough height to fly off, he was stuck there.
It had been really hot the previous 2 days so he was quite dehydrated.
Most baby or juvenile flying-foxes who come into care are inexperienced and don't know how they're supposed to behave. They vary from extremely passive behaviour, to total screaming outrage. Dingo fell into the latter category. He complained about everything, then fell into the slump which follows a toddler sobbing fit and went quite flat and passive. He just ran out of oomph.
Babies/juvies of this age are treated like babies until they feel they are ready to be treated as big kids again. They suffer an emotional crisis and need time to regroup and feel safe. It usually takes a few days for them to come good and reassert their individuality.
Dingo was no exception; he joined the Hielander in the cage, then they were both joined by Tutti Frutti a few days later, a little female who was lightly tangled in horrible fruit netting. Fortunately her injuries were minimal, and the 3 of them coexisted in the cage for a few days until they were all ready for aviary care.
Dingo was up, up and away as soon as he sniffed the freedom of the aviary. Once he regained his mojo he was into everything and quite a confident little person.
    I love success stories.

It’s remarkable how these highly intelligent and social animals allow you to take the place of their mother, not only feeding them but “licking,” toileting and cuddling them, until they are ready to move on into a batty community. Loving them saves them, as happens with human babies.

It depends on the baby and what stage they're in. If they've given up then they're quiet and just let it happen - the adrenaline of the accident has worn off and they've tried to escape without success so they've basically given up.
If they're fairly newly discommoded, then they still have some feist and can must it and the adrenaline to try to escape again. I love it when they try to scare me off - it's such a defiant thing to do when they're so small and at such a disadvantage. I'm duly impressed at their display and give them full credit for their bravado.
And it depends on what they've damaged during their mishap.

They go through all the stages - crash land and find themselves trapped. Anger and fear with adrenaline giving them bravado to scream their frustration out at you and try to scare you off. Then fear at the unknown and terror making them passive, then gradual trust because you're showing them no reason not to trust, then acceptance and then the reemergence of their personality so they can self direct (getting out of the cage to hang outside).

However there is a vid where the bat is actually outraged because his airer was altered so he couldn't get stuck. Let me think what I called it and if I find it I'll post the link. I just have to remember the bat's name.

There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. Then when Tutti Frutti arrived in care, she did a lot better because there were other babies in care for her to socialise with in her new and scary environment. Well, he sure thinks he's been grossly offended and feels he should tell the world. Poor little man. I enjoyed your explanation of a juvie in this state of mind. It makes it clearer why he is not calming down as soon as some rescues. Or maybe he's offended by "tiny little penis" and not letting THAT slight go. lol It's sweet to see a success story, from not that long ago, and his recovery. Thanks Meg !! p.s. sweet to hear the cockatiels song in the background.

Yes, it was. I wonder how they clean themselves up when coated like this. The tongue is only some help. Maybe they rub it?? Don't have Mom anymore to do it when in the wild.

They really aren't all that different from people, are they? Sometimes I still feel like I need a bit of babying myself when I feel stuck in a rut. It's thanks to the love and care that they receive from you and the other batty folks that they're able to both physically and emotionally recover from their accidents.

I suspected this was older, and then read the description. They've moved that. Don't know if I care for it. Oh well. RUclips does what they want. Anyhoo this was a thoroughly entertaining video all the way thru! You talking to Dingo and his various replies depending on his level of growth...or attitude was hilarious and lovely. Thanks Meg🙏🤣🦇🌺

Thanks Frenzy; it has a feel good factor until a bat dies then people don't like it so much.
Many bats don't survive; I write the outcomes if I know them at the time of the video, in the description.

They're the most amazing animals and the more you care for them the more you learn and the more you want to learn and do this. I accidentally fell into this work 17 years ago when I joined wildlife rescue to rescue and care for parrot chicks during the spring chick season; I never actually rescued a parrot but now rescue bats exclusively.

      Hi Rebecca
      I'm Meg, Megabattie.
You get to see my face in various videos; I put up a vid a few days ago where I was face to camera. It was one of the Dionysus videos. Try watching all those ones (there are about 4 or 5 I think); it would have been the second last one, right at the very end after the disclaimer screen.

Dingo the Defiant and the Teddy Bear. What a triumphant comedy and inspiration for a children's book. And Dingo's escape from Meg's gilded prison is a good idea for the plot....as long as there's a reunion with all the other prisoners of from the royal court!!
