Baby flying-fox in care: this is Diego with Jo

  • I visited Jo yesterday to see how Diego was going. He's 10 weeks now, and ready to go to a kind of minicreche with another pup his age, next week when he's weaned. The pups are weaned off milk feeds sooner than they would be in the wild, because their mums would continue to be a milk bar for them while the babies grow into juveniles, and until she's pregnant enough with her new baby to need the nutrition for herself and the growing embryo.
In care through creching, we need the babies to be feeding themselves; we replace the nutrition they'd get from their milk feeds high protein powder on their fruit. (sometimes yoghurt works well during the transition).
Once he's weaned he can go into the aviary with the adults and the other juvies his age and a bit older.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by that comment; they're only alone outside if they're wild and in need of rescue (and they bite so rescue without vaccination and experience isn't a good idea).
Out in the back on the airer Jo doesn't leave them alone because they could be predated upon by wild birds, so they have to be watched unless they're in a protective cage.

The Sookie (with the ie) is the apron pouch; I just named them that because they're good for sooky babies when you need your hands for something.
The term is to be a sook, or to be sooky (or sooky la la).
This vid was Diego, but yes Dingo was also a complete sook for a while until he regained his mojo after Tutti Frutti arrived.

We don't feed our babies or juvies banana - their guts aren't quite adapted for it at this stage and they can get bowel obstructions if they aren't adequately hydrated. As the babies wean, they're in charge of their own hydration, so it's not a great idea to give them something which may kill them if they're a bit dry.

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  2 года назад +2

LOL - you don't see venomous spiders often if you live in the city.
People think Australia is full of stuff wanting to kill you. Sure there's lots of dangerous stuff, but it's no worse than anywhere. The US has various venomous snakes, cottonmouths and rattlers, and you have wolves, bears, rabid racoons and squirrels, yet you're not afraid to be in the USA? (I'm assuming you're in the US, sorry for the assumption, if you aren't)
In the cities the worst you're likely to see are huntsmen spiders - hairy legs but totally harmless.
I've seen maybe 5 snakes in the wild in 65 years, and I do go to the country a lot. I've never seen a funnel web spider, though I've seen plenty of red backs in people's sheds, but they don't attack you.
Basically the only real thing to be scared of are Drop Bears, and that's a total joke on the tourists.

Excellent Harridan; I love new subscribers.
      Welcome to Megabattie,
I put information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first. I also put the fate of the animal if I know it, in the descriptions. I may put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care.
There is also a Happy Outcomes playlist if you want to only watch videos where the bat survives; this is a real life channel and you get the good, the bad, the ugly and distressing, and even my oopsies.
You can find further videos on an individual bat by searching in the YT search bar for Megabattie/and the name of the bat you want to follow.
There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. Home, Videos, Playlists, Community, About. If you click on the community tab there are posts there where I can share pix and talk about some of the videos I put up and answer questions.

@@Megabattie i recall that they weren't very big. that was a fun summer. i had a friend who lived 30 miles to the south of that mountain, he lived in a corner of an enormous barn which of course had bats in the rafters, and it used to terrify me when they flew around my head in the daytime because the only rabid bat found in New Mexico last year was in the Manzano Mountains where my friend lived.
i am from Texas where rabies is rampant and if you see a nocturnal animal out in the daytime then it's not well, most likely rabid. mostly skunks where i lived, though it was found in damn near every domestic animal people keep. i am downright phobic about rabies, however bats don't frighten me anymore thanks to people like you who make informative videos, though i have no desire to catch or keep one, they belong in the wild, where they are needed

@@harridan. There is no rabies in Australia in the terrestrial native wildlife, the domestic pet population, or the livestock population, only in the bat population; bats are canopy dwellers.

@@keldaogg2157 Well buttered popcorn is interesting but what you came into the room for isn't. Your brain recognises this so it drops the boring stuff and concentrates in the interesting stuff.
I like not remembering why I came into the room because my brain takes me on an interesting journey into something totally unexpected as I forget what I was doing and find something more interesting.
Sometimes when you're looking for your keys it's not particularly convenient though

Grey baby smell is like vanilla syrup, musk sticks (a pink candy which tastes like opaque pink lifesavers), and baby powder.

It's as the title says: a baby flying-fox. Flying-foxes are a kind of fruit bat.
      Welcome to Megabattie,
I put lots of information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first. I also put the fate of the animal if I know it, at the time I put the video up.

Reza, you can't catch Covid from a bat, only from a human.
It's not the fault of a horseshoe bat in China that humans provided a way for the virus to get into another animal where the virus mutated so it became infective to humans and between humans. It's not the bat's fault that we have global air travel and economically it's bad for the country's economics to be quarantined; it's not the fault of the bat that the governments refused to quarantine before the virus was a pandemic.
This video is of a bat in Australia, a flying-fox. They don't carry CoVid and you can't catch anything from them unless you are bitten or scratched by a bat who has rabies.
All bat carers are vaccinated for rabies.
