What a beautiful, sweet, smart and loving bird. Thank you for treating her with kindness and love and for sharing your life with her. May she rest in peace.
@rockit3422 what a ridiculous uninformed comment. The crow is a wild bird, only a terrible person would trap her inside a house when she's obviously healthy and uninjured. She doesn't require anything nature doesn't provide. Dogs and cats are domestic animals that can't survive well on their own in the wild, Crows can. Wild animals should never be removed from their natural habitat unless they absolutely need a humans care for injury or illness and they can't survive otherwise. Even then, they should be released as soon as they are well. Very few situations require a wild creature to remain permanently under the care of a human. Healthy wild birds do not belong in houses. They need to fly free and live amongst their own species in their natural habitat to remain truly happy and healthy.
What you are forgetting is that a dog and a cat are domesticated pets. A free-living crow has a boundless freedom that no domestic animal can have. And it has its flock of conspecifics. Kaley has given Darling this freedom and has not interfered with nature. You have to choose sides...
I think that was right. There was something off about Darling, baby minded, never grew up. Was never observant enough for the flock. She was dropped there by the parents and she would have been too cooped up in the house. She was treated as her parents would have wanted. Don't be angry.@@rockit3422
@@rockwell1558 I disagree with you, and I note a contradiction in what you say. Kindly note that cats and dogs are not born domesticated and so they need to be trained to be domesticated, although the level of domesticating intensities differ from animal to animal dependending on their current living environment and their natural level of psychology. Crows are definitely not as amenable to domestication as cats, dogs and rabbits are - this is pretty obvious; however, in the case of Darling this crow's affinity towards human love and affection was indeed very much pronounced owing to the fact that she was an orphan crow whom Kayley greatly helped by making a nesting home for her. It is my belief that Darling sensed Kayley's help and reciprocally manifested her deep gratitude to her by continuing to stay in the family's immediate environment and befriending Sam the dog and Gigi the cat. Darling was definitely looking for a warm and loving home with her human parents - this is not to say that she was to be permanently imprisoned within the home of her human parents but to have the opportunity to return to her human home. So why couldn't the family allow her to stay in their home and to be accommodated in a bird cage. If this were not passible for reasons whatsoever, then the least that the family could have done was to have built a bird house for her outside the house - this would have protected Darling from predators. All I can say is that this family failed to go the extra step by safeguarding Darling by giving her a secure home to live in. This is the painful tragedy to all of us who love and care for animals.
I kept seeing all the past tense verbs and I kept thinking “man, soon they’re gonna say the crow died,” and even knowing this, I wasn’t ready and still felt a bit teary. Got dang bro, rest in peace crow bro.
Yeah I was the same I knew it was going to end sadly but even the short amount of time they all had together would of been 10 lifetime experiences in a short period I hope darling is in crow heaven r.i.p you were one special bird
Exactly. I braced myself...but - no good. I've tamed 2 feral cats 2 different times...out here in the Blue Ridge mountains. They each went from Wild and ferocious, to loving and tame. Then they each disappeared, independent of each other. I tell myself that they wandered off and found a loving partner. But I know that coyotes are smart and hungry, here in these mountains. I never tried to keep the cats inside when they wanted to be out and running free. Each one had his own personality. Each one affected me deeply and enriched my life, just like all my domestic pets have always done.
The idea of her being eaten by a bird of prey is really horrific. I have a family of crows that I give treats to in our backyard. I was devastated when their nest was ransacked one year.
@@Wayniesgirl Hawks don't go after crows, usually crows bother hawks even one on one. In my area crows bombdive hawks everytime they see one. Maybe just maybe darling went to another family that would allow her in or she passed because it was her time to go.
Several years ago there was a young crow with its leg stuck in our chain link fence. Two other crows were just trying to help free it and then just watched from the grass. I went to the fence with gloves and goggles on and freed the bird. That bird still lives in a nest in a pine tree in my backyard and brings my family random shiny objects.
Amazing. Our crows refuse to even let themselves be seen by humans, I just hear them all day, but today I ran into the woods because they were making an especially frantic racket. I finally found them in a tree with a massive great horned owl they were bullying, lol, and I hooted at him which made him look at me and fly away, I knew he would. I'm hoping this was a small step toward getting the crows to notice/like me. I love.your story
That just reminded me of the traumatic experience I had, once...of driving in traffic and seeing a pigeon hit by a car and its mate jumping desperately into the traffic to pull it out. I've done wildlife rescue...but there was nothing I could do...without causing a huge car accident by slamming on my brakes. I'm sure they both lost their lives and will always regret I wasn't able to help. To see the desperation of one bird risking its life for another broke mt heart....and I just wish more humans understood that animals are intelligent and have feelings, the same as we do.
@Jetz316 Is this common for Crows that have been shown such kindness by humans ? They seem intelligent and emotionally sophisticated enough to maintain positive associations about a place and it's human inhabitants. I'm largely ignorant about them, but have always been very fond of Crows and Ravens.
@@Martha-q8p1b That's is a heartbreaking story. Through the years I've repeatedly learned the same lesson about animals. They are all more intelligent and emotionally complex then most of us assume. People often conveniently believe that animals they eat are 'dumb', as well. But who goes to a zoo and says, 'Look at the stupid Giraffes ?'
I do not recollect reading about Darling's demise. Perhaps Darling is not dead and has relocated to another region after having found a new human and / or crow family. All the same may Almighty God care, protect and feed our beautiful Darling.
I rescued two crows like this over 35 years ago. I raised them by hand. I trained them how to fly and eventually I release them and they survived for 22 years each….. fabulous birds very beautiful, my favourite bird, very intelligent
There are three genres : animal , mineral and vegetal . At what genre own the humans ? We are animals , from animation , mouvement capable I suppose , not the same specie but animals too. We making a difference between them and us ? To justify eating them I suppose . Because we eat animals and if we call ourselves animals .....
Humans have the entire animal kingdom inside of us. We are the kings, we are the guardians. And what a piss poor job we have done as stewards of this magnificent world
I knew heartbreak was coming because all of this was said in the past tense. Crows are so amazing. At my last home, I lived in the territory of a shy, quiet crow couple. We fed them every day and they became very comfortable with us, coming close and hanging out on our small deck with us. One liked to play peekaboo with me. They could tell that I'm disabled (and small) and, as quiet as they were, they still became very protective of me, watching "intruders" (strangers in the yard) very closely and carefully if those intruders were interacting with me. They were only protective of me though, not my tall, abled husband. It was very sweet.
@@marcelbork92 oh, yes! This is so right... I missed the essence of that dimension for so long. But the thing is - it was meant to be, as I had to miss it to get it. Well, it costs... but the experience of missing it and getting it is the whole point. Just wait for it... it will come (only) when you are ready. 👍🌅
You say that... And I'd agree... But then again, there is a wonderful lesson from nature in there. Most lessons dont come free. I think its kinda beautiful. The only reason the crows would alarm-call there is likely to notify the 'owner' that something was up with Darling. This woman and her pets had a beautiful friendship. Its a bit unfair that as nature gave it, it took it away again, but friends kinda come and go. Tragic, but beautiful.
This was obviously a young impressionable crow who for some reason chose to keep company w/ a human & couple of pet animals as opposed to sticking w/ "her own kind" so to speak & therefore had nobody to teach & warn her about predators. Plus the woman 'had a thing' about not letting friendly "wild" animals in her house, even overnight, although this crow was by no means a typical "wild" animal. So the woman assumes a predator got her overnight & it doesn't seem to bother her in the least, although like you, my heart grieves that this crow wasn't allowed in the safety of the house at least overnights until she matured enough to want to mate & begin acting like a "wild" crow (who live in family flocks.)
@@leybrabear She will have to live with that regret for the rest of her life.....not letting her "companion" killed by another predator. Predators never sleep....
What a bitter sweet story, amazing for Darling to have shared so much with Sam & Gigi & the humans in the family & so sad to lose her so young as they can live for years. Thank you Geobeats for sharing the story & to the family for caring so much for this beautiful bird.
This story brought me to tears. In 6 minutes I got totally emotionally invested in Darling. At the point which she was BFFs with my Dog and Cat - I would have definitely built a safe house for her. RIHP Darling. You were sooooo special.
Building a safe house for a wild animal while might be a good intention, is also a bad idea. Darling was still wild and would have suffered without his/her freedom.
Darling had lived a full life, making friend with human, a cat and a dog. May Darling rest in peace and had a good rebirth. Thank you for compiling your filming into a moving real life story. I once also shared a close bond with a small bird too.
Animals can be so amazing. I found a TOAD . ( I live in south London near the Thames ) when I was about 11yrs old I brought back a toad. And let it go in the back garden sometimes id dig up worms and leave them to tempt the toad out. After few years. I was visiting my grandad. He told me the toad I released in the back garden was still about. So I put out a few worms. Squatted down. Out came this large yellow Belly spotted toad literally eating the worms off my hand. Then when I was 26 my grandad Died. And I sat in the little back garden when I heard a Croaky sound and from under some Bricks came this big old toad I knew it was the same one it came over and I grubbed around found some wood lice and few bugs. It happily Munched them off my hand. Apparently Toads can Live over 40yrs. Sadly the house was sold and I never got to go into that back garden but who knows that old TOAD probs still there.
when I was a kid, maybe 8, I too found a toad and brought him home, there were no toads around our neighborhood, Eventually I released him in my moms garden. One day Mom said when I came home after my day at high school, "guess what I found today Johnny?" Me, Mr. know it all, hates that question but I had to give up. "what?" She was gardening and said she was breaking lumps of dirt with her hands and squeezed an alive brown lump that startled her and jumped away....it was Toadie after all those years right close to where I left him.
_"There will never be another darling"_ is fitting and true, but it's also sad and final. You painted such a remarkable, moving portrait of your and your family's friend.
Yes, I know. Kayley gave us an excellent video of Darling. This video is so very heart warming and at the same time heart breaking. Thanks to Kayley, Darling was a happy crow while she lived within the confines of Kayley's home. I just wish Kayley and family had built a bird home for Darling as the video and Kayley's narrative clearly shows that Darling very much wanted to be part of Kayley's family. I can understand that keeping a crow in one's home may be a bit bizarre, but if Kayley and family had built a birdhouse for Darling, it may afforded the freedom and flexibility to Darling as well as to have given her that intimacy that Darling so much desired.
Crows are so smart. I helped one whose foot got hurt and she/he mimicked my cell phone. That was her "call" to me that she was around. She/he, too, managed to get get caught by a bird of prey and I felt so lost for so long like losing family. It was one of my saddest experiences, ever.
Darling’s ability to bridge the worlds of Gigi, Sam and humans is fascinating. She seems to possess a carnal wisdom, a kind of animal intuition, which heightens the connections within this diverse family. Her presence not only enriched their interactions but also offered a fascinating glimpse into the complex emotional world of animals, which often remains a mystery to humans. What an amazing story and I’m very sorry for your loss.

Absolutely one of the most evocative connections between man, bird, cat dog ever. I am truly happy for you to have had that ultimate experience with Darling and your furry family. Just so compellingly beautiful!
❤ohh how this touches my heart. I moved 1 year ago to a retirement apartment, at my house I had 2 crows that I had coffee & peanuts with every morning for 14 years. They would come when I called them & every year bring me their baby to show off. Now when I stop by my old house they still come & I miss them so much.
Thank you Nancy ❤ showing their new babies to you every year is the purest form of love and appreciation. Please say hello from me when you visit them next time. We live in London,UK and we have a very similar story with a fox that was born very close to our old home. We would observe the fox cubs from a distance and one day we noticed the smallest one had a nasty wound very close to the eye. Thank God, there are a couple of charities that help with the well-being of urban foxes. They sent us an immune booster pill right away, which we kept giving to her in a small sausage for ten days... In a couple of months, the wound was completely healed. Although all the others left home, our little girl who we call Tilki stayed with her mother. The mother has aged since we first met her. And we moved two years ago. My son still has good friends in the old neighbourhood. Every time we go to a birthday party, I take seeds, nuts and a couple of dog treats for our loveliest old neighbours... And Tilki, I have no idea how... Always appear ten meters away when we stop to look at our old house. I feel blessed for her trust for us.
I had a pet crow when I was a child... Oh, the stories that I have! Blackie was so intelligent and protective of us. Good memories! Thanks for sharing your story of Darling.
dude me and my brothers also had a crow called blackie as children crazy! probably just a childs first call if he sees a black bird xD he also disappeared one day, i will always remember him for breaking into our house thru any window u open and eating my mothers hair. he also shit on a pillow I havent washed it since muhahahaha
Corvids are incredibly smart. Sam seems like such a beautifully natured dog. I have a special relationship with my parrot and various rescue birds I've nurtured over the years. This lady is a sweet soul ❤
Not really. She refused to let this vulnerable bird inside. Save the animals from people like this who think pronouns are more important than going out of their way to keep an animal safe.
@@suzannemarienau2760 what are you talking about? It's a wild animal. She did keep it safe by bringing it to safety as a fledgling. You can't bring every wild animal inside to 'protect' it. The crow didn't want to come inside at night, it slept in the forest, so letting it in during the day wouldn't have achieved a thing. It wasn't any more vulnerable than every creature living as nature intended. It could fly, forage, and protect its territory. Not the slightest bit more vulnerable than any other wild bird.
I love crows. My Grandpa had one when I was young and his name was Sammy. Sammy would say "Hello, how are you?" and sounded exactly like my Grandpa. On Sunday mornings, the church windows were open and Sammy would fly over and sit on the window sill and say hello to the people in the pews whether the preacher was speaking or not! Never been another one like him! Love this story about Darling, thank you for sharing!

WOW - I am so moved by your care for Darling! You cared enough to let her be a wild animal and respected her intelligence enough to not deny her interaction. A testament to how we can share space.
The ending made me sad. I wish she would’ve let Darling sleep indoors and kept her as a pet bc Darling seemed to have wanted to live inside for sleeping. But, I know it’s not for wild animals. Sam wasn’t there to chase away birds of prey. I’m going to believe that she met a hunk of a crow and decided to slip. What a beautiful bird. This woman was lucky.
@@stirfrybry1 the crow wanted to be close because of their relationship and their home was the crows territory. even if it's true that crows understand what being a pet means, it doesn't make it okay to make any wild crow a pet. there's many reasons for this. as you said, you truly don't understand her reasoning so here's some reasons: crows have complex behavioral, social, nutritional and psychological needs that humans would struggle to or be entirely unable to meet, crows carry zoonotic diseases so that means you could get sick, as a pet they lose their ability to survive in the wild which is a danger to their life and the species' as a whole, oh and it's illegal in many countries (the US included.)

it was bound to happen...........hawks kill birds...and this crow was totally alone, an easy target simply because it had not gone off and found others of its kind... with even a small group crows become aware of killer birds and sound alarms to warn other creatures of the danger.

Crows are some of the most intelligent birds, they have the ability to speak in sentences, albeit limited, also have the ability to learn the meaning behind the words and communicate more clearly. I encountered a crow thirty years ago that did that and just froze, because I had no idea they could vocalize like that.

This is the most magical experience. And also such a heartbreaking one. But i'm glad we all got to appreciate Darling even if it's through the eyes of someone else. Fly high Darling.
Yes, I agree with you that this video story is rather unfortunately bitter sweet. While thanking Kayley and family for caring and feeding beautiful Darling, I just want to say that I wish Kayley had a built a birdhouse for Darling because it was pretty obvious that Darling was looking to enhance her love and intimacy with Kayley and family, which I interpret to be the consequence of Darling's gratitude towards Kayley and family for having cared for and fed her. We know that Darling was, sadly, an orphan. The fact that Darling assumed a guardianship protection over Kayley's home and the fact that Darling kept coming to Kayley's window and making those pitiful sounds of wanting to be let in, dramatically shows Darling's explicit wanting to befriend Kayley and family through a higher level of intimacy. Darling's intervention in the lives of Kayley, Kayley's family and with Gigi and Sam, I believe, was a divinely and miraculously emanated, and because of this there was certainly a divine message which I believe to be that animals, too, are very capable of expressing their gratitude to humans for having cared for them and fior having fed them when they desperately needed it. Its rather sad to note that Kayley and family did not go the extra mile of having given Darling an birdhouse on the external environs of their nature home.
It is a fairy tale. You are blessed! ❤ One winter I had a pair of crows visiting me every day, though they never were as trusting as Darling. The called me every morning, and they came to my balcony, but I could never touch them. In late spring they brought their only child as well. It often took naps on the balcony, or played with my plants or took away the things I left accidentally outside. The same year in early automn I heard one day all crows in the neighborhood making a lot of noise, and after that I never saw them again. I don't know, what happened. I hope, they went just somewhere else to live on. I still miss them.
What a beautiful, heart warming and ultimately heart breaking story. Thanks for sharing, I don’t think I’ll look at crows, ravens or rooks in the same way again.
This is a story is about this beautiful crow in the name of Darling and not about the domestication of animals. This was a miraculous story that happens once in a thousand life times. We humans are called to treasure and cherish such miraculous and touching stories of humans and animals, and to pass these touching and miraculous stories to generations of human beings - this miraculous and touching story is about Darling, an orphaned crow that wanted to show its gratitude to the humans who saved it from certain starvation and eventual death. By way of gratitude to Kayley, family and Sam the dog and Gigi the cat, Darling wanted to spend her life with this family in their home. While I am not necessarily advocating keeping birds in the home, the least that Kayley and family could have done was to have built a bird house within the external vicinity of their farm house. It was most obvious that Darling grew very very fond of the family and loved playing with Gigi and Sam in the immense garden. Its very disappointing to note that Kayley and family did not go the extra mile to help Darling with a warm and loving home, even after she visited them at their home window and made those attention-seeking sounds. It was manifestly obvious that Darling indeed became most intimate and protective with the externality of the house and its immediate environment to the extent that she swooped down to attack anyone and every one who dared to approach "her house". We who love and remember Darling can only hope and pray that she is safe wherevers she is. May Almighty God bless and protect our sweetheart Darling.

When she said that there’s no days off, and the crow is her alarm clock, I can totally relate. I feed around 100 crows every day, and I can’t sleep past 8 am. Like clockwork, there they are waiting for breakfast. I absolutely love them. I don’t have one special crow like this lady; I have 100. I might make a video one day about breakfast at Cary’s house.

I've raised several rescued or "special needs" crows (and other kinds also) no doubt about it - all the birds I've gotten to know were much more intelligent than most folks realise , and most especially crows. Even wild ones quickly realise that you're helping one of their kind and don't swarm you on walks outside.
Love that story, I wrote a poem called "If I Were a Crow" after seeing people stopping to take pictures by the side of the road of a bald eagle, and then 2 weeks later in the same area, a crow was by the side of the road, no-one even slowed down. This morning I started on "If I Were a Crow-Part II" and this evening your story popped up. Thanks again KC
I’ve raised three ravens, all of whom had fallen from the same tree. All of them were special and very loving creatures. They were also a ton of fun! Our dogs and cats and even a couple of roadrunners also grew fond of them, even the ones that got teased incessantly! They all stayed around for 1-2 years until they met a mate and flew off with them. The last one would come back often with his mate and call from the sky on their arrival. I would grab some raw hamburger or stew meat and throw it on the garage roof and they would visit while they ate and then he would thank me and they would leave. The last time they came they brought 3 offspring and I knew he was sharing his family joy with me. I cheered and I cried.
In times we are going through, when so much is negative this is a most refreshing true life story. Thanks for sharing this part of your lives with us. I have found crows to be most fascinating
Beautiful story. It almost made me cry. Crows and ravens are such beautiful, intelligent creatures. It must have been a wonderful experience, for both you and the animals. Rest in peace, Darling.
What a beautiful story. And I love your authentic and respectful interaction with animals. What a wholesome contrast to another video I just saw, with dogs being groomed and having their fur dyed. Making them look like toy animals or Disney cartoons.
What a beautiful, sweet, smart and loving bird. Thank you for treating her with kindness and love and for sharing your life with her. May she rest in peace.
Except the warmth and safety of her home. She refused to share that. Although the dog and cat were given these life-saving gifts.

I disagree with you, and I note a contradiction in what you say.

Easy to understand and agree with. Those birds are brilliant and make u feel like something hard to explain.
The ending made me cry. Life really isn't fair at times....poor Darling and her grieving friends. ❤
@leybrabear Are you always this judgemental? Shame on you, questioning whether her grief was real😢? You weren't there!
@@leybrabear She will have to live with that regret for the rest of her life.....not letting her "companion" killed by another predator. Predators never sleep....

There will NEVER be THIS darling again.

@@rolandfernandez9529 Are you being critical of my story or of Kayley not doing enough? Kayley did what she felt best and she has my respect. Me, I had no control over my Grandfather's decision to domesticate Sammy. It was just a story to reiterate what Kayley was saying about the intelligence of crows. Have a nice day.
@@christinefuller3168
No I am not being critical about you, and no offense intended.
I do not want to use the word critical because it sounds legal. I'm saying that I wish that Kayley and family had given Darling a home in a birdhouse where she could have lived in the comfort of knowing that she was near her adopted family. Obviously, Darling was very fond of Kayley and family including their dog, Sam and their cat, Gogi. It hurts me to know that Kayley and family did not go the extra mile by giving Darling a birdhouse to stay in. Yes, Kayley did care for Darling, but I just wish that she had gone the extra mile.
Thank you for having responded.
@@rolandfernandez9529I was thinking the same thing. Even though, their love for Darling was obvious, I was saddened that they didn't let them in their home or build a bird house, so she could feel safe😢
What a magical experience…💕loved watching the three of them playing together. Thanks for sharing, so sad sweet Darling is no longer present.😥
So your magical adopted dog drew Darling and Gigi into the family ❤. I’m surprised Darling never spoke to you . My uncle had a crow that he saved lived by his yard. He’d sit high on a tree and greet my uncles neighbors.
I’m sorry your sweet pet is no longer with you but you gave it one enriched life. Bless you for that ❤❤❤
Wonderfull kind words, but Calie did not consider Darling a pet, as she mentioned at 4:00 , they were friends.
What a cute and intelligent bird and what a beautiful experience you has with her. What a beautiful story of friendship. Sad to hear of her passing. May she rest in peace.
What a lovely tribute to this precious bird. ♥️

I'm sitting here crying after watching this over a bird I didn't even know. What a beautiful, loving story over a true soul connection.
Wow! So cute! Crow riding the dog and playing with cat! Thank you for taking such good care of these cute angels.
WOW - I am so moved by your care for Darling! You cared enough to let her be a wild animal and respected her intelligence enough to not deny her interaction. A testament to how we can share space.

That was a heartbreaking end. Sam, Gigi and their family, Darling was a blessing.
I truly didn't understand her reasoning. Wild animals don't hang around like pets. That bird wanted to be her pet
I agree completely. When an animal picks you out and wants to come in, you let them in. It's such a rare thing.
Ran into this video twice in a few months and watched it twice. Truly one of a kind, just like Darling.
What a beautiful video of this amazing crow named Darling who lived the best possible life and obviously adored her human friends. I was privileged to become friends with a family of ravens and could not believe how intelligent they were. Thanks for the wonderful video about this beautiful bird and how she touched your hearts. Her story now has touched so many thousands now.
A wonderful story. It’s always sad when one of the animals goes. We all grieve, and, of course, including them.
It’s great that you documented all of it. You’re right it will probably never happen again.❤
Oh boy!!!! @@trudy-annsmall9600you’re so right
it was bound to happen...........hawks kill birds...and this crow was totally alone, an easy target simply because it had not gone off and found others of its kind... with even a small group crows become aware of killer birds and sound alarms to warn other creatures of the danger.
It is so hard to lose these precious ones. She had an amazing life and family with you all. ♡

I never realized until watching videos on YT, how brilliantly smart crows are........
Wolves and corvids have a long history of helping each other hunt and watching out for each other. It's beautiful to see that tradition coming somewhat in from the wild. I absolutely LOVED this story! 💜

Crows are some of the most intelligent birds, they have the ability to speak in sentences, albeit limited, also have the ability to learn the meaning behind the words and communicate more clearly. I encountered a crow thirty years ago that did that and just froze, because I had no idea they could vocalize like that.

I am so glad you documented so much of the life of Darling and all the interactions with the family and pets! The looks on the faces of your cat and dog afterwards was a stunning picture of grief! What a great story, and I’ll probably never forget this one!

Crows are extremely smart. What a wonderful video!!!
It is a fairy tale. You are blessed! ❤
One winter I had a pair of crows visiting me every day, though they never were as trusting as Darling.
Oh I’m so so sorry 🙏🏻
What a beautiful, heart warming and ultimately heart breaking story. Thanks for sharing, I don’t think I’ll look at crows, ravens or rooks in the same way again.

8am? Lucky. I don’t get to sleep in past 530am. And then I have to deal with teenagers all day. Enjoy your birds! That sounds absolutely amazing
Nobody would believe this if it wasn't on video 😍
