@@christopherbzowski4346 Exactly. What people seem to not understand, is that these birds have a good memory thanks to their intelligence. They basically do tell stories too each other, as well as remembering who treated them kindly, and who treated them wrongly. Most Australians complain about their dive bombing, but why don't they do the same here in NZ? Perhaps the people they dive bomb mistreated them at some point? Basically the only thing I can think of, cause here in NZ, they just warble at you.
There’s 4 ravens at work that visit me every day. Two are mom and kid or dad and kid I can’t tell. They nested right in front of where i work in the back. The other two live somewhere nearby and they get really close to me or flyby close and make weird noises and also bring me random trash (gifts) i feed them of course i guess that’s why the like me
Nah, she just being nice to animal, in this case is a Magpie, and that Magpie informed about her to other Magpies. Cat do that kinda thing too. She is basically magpie lady version of cat lady.
Magpies, Crows, Ravens, and the like are very intelligent and curious birds. That first Magpie will have been watching you for a while and deciding if you were safe or not to say hello, its really something special to gain the trust of a wild creature, you are truly blessed.
Robbins will do the same. When I was tending my garden a few years ago. Tending means me sitting and watering with a hose. The robbins became familiar with me. I would give them baths with the hose and talk to them.... no I am not crazy! But I swear the oldest one would yell at me when I directed the hose at another one! ha. He had me trained! It would squawk or chirp not sure the right term but it was very loud until I gave it the hose shower again. He would fly up to perch on the back of my chair, and peck the back of my neck while they dried their wings off in the sun. Guessing they wanted a grey-haired nest lol.
It's true the crows, ravens, jays and other corvids are known for their intelligence around the world.... yet the Australian magpie's intellect has evolved completely independently of the corvids, since it's only distantly related and not part of the _corvidae_ family.
Over the years, I have noticed animals are very good at figuring out if people are kind. or nasty. These birds have decided that you are the person for them. I really enjoy this story and video. Great job Danielle! You shall be rewarded for this!!!... GOD bless & keep YOU!!!!!!!!
"Don't take away their dignity by clipping their wings"... Those who have that kind of empathy, respect and understanding, deserve such special gifts from other folks in the nature.
I love birds but would never have one as a pet and this is why. Should birds be pets? They are meant to fly. I don't think flying around your living room quite counts. It's a bit sad.
In my country indonesia, lots of people are having birds as their pet, and put them in cage, it really broke my heart that they couldn’t use their wing as it used to be 😭
that is true for pretty much any animal - being a pet means they're imprisoned, castrated and have their will broken. i get that most people who keep pets don't have bad intentions (or don't realize the existence of a very dark side within themselves, due to being domesticated from their childhood), but it seems impossible to me to seriously reflect on this issue and not come to the conclusion that it's just as bad as keeping a human slave. ...but yeah, people on average are either stupid or a**holes... that's why i don't socialize very much either
@@infinityphoenix I get the joke. These just aren't related to the ones found in Europe and etc. So calling them magpies is awkward when some Australians, for whatever reason, hate that it is a popular thing to call budgies, parakeets, due to their long tails and small sizes. Australian magpies are part of the butcherbird family, but that shouldn't make them any less interesting. You don't have to be a corvid to be an amazing bird.
@@JacobKernels Nah, butcherbirds are part of the same family but Aussie magpies aren't actual butcherbirds, which refer to a specific genus of birds in the family Artamidae , the Cracticinae family. Officially, the Aussie magpie is in a separate genus of the family, distinct from butcherbirds. They're closely related yes but they're not referred to as butcherbirds in any way. Also, the Aussie magpie/europe magpie/butcherbird fiasco is a whole different thing compared to Parakeets vs Budgies. I understand calling a bunch of birds parakeets to basically say they're mini parrots. The issue is when people start to use Parakeet to exclusively refer to Budgerigars. Elsewhere outside of America, it refers to the group. America's classification is what's argued about, because they just rolled over the original name, taken from an Indigenous Australian name for them.
Magpies don't approach just anyone looking for a human to interact with , in fact they pretty much keep to their own , the fact that they chosen her is mind boggling furthermore bringing all the rest of his family and friends , they sure are communicating in a very high level , these birds are phenomenal and that lady is super sweet , they already knew that, I'm blown away🤯
I am not sure how it is with magpies but ravens and crows actually communicate positive and negative/dangerous things to their young through their DNA. The study of Epigenetics is like a walk in wonderland and gives me hope that we will advance as a species with more understanding and empathy
Yea they can sense peoples energy which will give away if they are friendly people or not. Or more like honest people, fake people give of a bad form of energy. Its a language many humans dont carry anymore.
@@Gustav4 or more likely Gustav due to the fact that Maggies communicate amongst themselves the fact of the matter is that once one or two Maggies know you are safe they will be sure to tell the whole neighborhood of Maggies and they will all be visiting just like in this case. The fact of the matter is that most social creatures once they find a "safe haven" they will gather there because the rest of the world is pretty unforgiving place. Having a place where they can basically run around on the ground, hang out with other Maggies and not have to be worried about predators is a very welcome change for them. In my backyard I often saw Maggies flocking because a few figured out it was safe and I even built them a few shelters to hide out in because there are in fact predatory birds in the area where I lived and I wanted them to have someplace to duck in when they were about. I came out one morning and I happened to glance in one and saw 8 Maggies just chillin' inside and gawping at me as I peeked in. In my childhood home I also looked out for my local "flying fauna" by having built several BatHouses to give them a place to safely and securely roost during their sleep phases in the day and it came to be such that my neighborhood gained quite a little coterie of bats which in turn helped keep down the pesky insect population especilly when people started noticing the fact that they were seeing fewer and fewer mosquitoes in the area than they remembered :). I did a rough count once and even did a science project on their patterns etc. Due to the presence of my families BatHouses there was approx. 35-50 bats in our neighborhood because of them. (heh, I even painted them with the BatMan logo and nailed a brightly typed Index card reminiscent of the 60s spoof Batman cuz I thought it was amusing)
@@revparravager3184 Yea but going from having them around to have them sit on your head requires that they really trust you, and I still believe that they can sense the energy a high complex living thing gives of, which will help them to decide the level of trust they give.

My wife n I had the privilege of rescuing an orphaned american magpie. From about 2days old. They are an amazing animal. They dont get near the respect & admiration they deserve. All Corvids are incredibly intelligent, but magpies seem to have an especially bright & funny personality. We taught her to fly, & she eventually went out on her own, always remembering to check up on us from time to time. I wish people would understand how beautiful these creatures are, & not view them as pests
You might find it interesting that Australian magpies aren't actually part of the corvid family even though they look like they should be. They are actually part of the Artamidae family. Hope you find that interesting.👍
They are amazing, but honestly all Animals are and are equally intelligent and bright. It's just that when we get to know them individually we finally see that and recognise it. You might think she's a lovely person, but one thing I've learned during my years is that people usually suffer from depression because they neglect some aspect(s) of their life, and the depression is their emotions catching up with them. And I'm pretty sure this is what happened with her. She was probably a shitty person before, and so her depression started hitting and humbled her. Don't ever say people like this are the among of us.

After all, you won't get much kindness from a magpie if you are a baby songbird.
Welp, she likely figured out that humans are on average terrible, but you have to stick around to not make your family sad. The chances of terrible interactions is a lot lower if you just don't associate with humans, but we're wired to be social. Hence being more comfortable hanging with goofy animals than awful humans

My daughter came home one day with a baby magpie that had fallen from its nest, years ago. It was a full time job rearing him. When he was old enough to do things for himself, he spent all day running around our back yard, He was free to leave anytime he wanted to, but just never left us, and became a member of our family. They are extremely smart and real clowns. He always makes us laugh, no matter how bad you might be feeling. He is four now and never ceases to amaze us, he acts more like a dog than a bird and is my best friend.
A big red wasp was in my hot tub. I fished it out with the net I use to remove leaves. I held it out in front of me while it dried its wings. It took off, circled the hot tub three times, then flew off.

It's the food. If you feed one regularly, others follow for the food. My mother used to have a heap of them come regularly to the back veranda for the food she'd give them. When you earn their trust, you can hand feed them.

some people are meant to be alone. the one size monogamous relationship does not fit everyone. instead we are served up a tsunami of boy girl relationship on tv cinema, social life, and from our family. I wish I had been told it was OK to be single... it would have saved a lot of grief.
@@edwardharley9 very true, I strongly dislike the societal expectation that you should strive for and want a cookie cutter style relationship, and if you either don't want it, or remain single then there is something wrong with you. It is an extremely outdated concept in my opinion. Fortunately though I think that a shift is occurring in that respect many people now are challenging this idea. I'm sure that in the past alot of people spent their lives in misery because they settled with someone who they were not in the least bit compatible with just because they feared the consequences of how they would be treated by the public if they remained single throughout adulthood. I wouldn't be surprised either if it resulted in alot of domestic abuse sadly.
@@edwardharley9 while I agree for the most part, I personally feel she’s battling something much bigger & more personal than the anxiety of being single. the way she phrased her loneliness was very relatable to me. I have Schizophrenia with progressively darker, more disconnected periods of isolation as the years have gone by. it’s very, very hard for me to be alone, but I am always alone, both factors being driven by my Schizophrenia. so maybe I am assuming, but I do sense that she has deeper meanings behind her words than just being single.
The magpies sensed that you were destined to become a licensed wildlife caregiver even before you did. You had the gift. You just needed the papers. Now you are Danielle "The Magpied Piper."
It goes deeper than how nice she is. Animals have a very high sense of energy and trust like this is so special. My life and many experiences validate me personally. Throughout my life, I have come to understand those of us that are socially uncomfortable or awkward that when taking a deep breath in nature, the animals sense something. I do not understand completely it is not magic, though it is magical to experience. Total inner peace and a feeling of belonging.
I know a lady here in Yellowknife who is known as the Raven Lady. Much like these magpies, she has a special relationship with the Ravens in town. Flying with her while she's driving, taking food from her hand, even leaving their kids to hang out in her yard. Birds are such amazing creatures
If you ever feel alone and isolated from people, like you don't fit in well with society, don't fret. It just means maybe people aren't 'your people.' Loners often have a deeper love of and relationship with animals and nature and it's really beautiful. The world needs these gentle souls as much as anything.
I appreciate what you are trying to say but depression is not as simple as feeling alone either with or without people especially if fitting with anything is considered important. Especially society. Loners are often confused with other 'like minded' people such as crippling shyness, introverts and certain empaths to name but a few. You can be a sociable loner as being in company in a public leisure environment (think pub) particularly if reading for some reason is a cue to 'normal' folk to engage in banal/polite/curious conversation. I have perfected many concepts without ever wishing to look or practice. Alone is a state but loner is a choice made alone.
Thank you for sharing your magical miracle❤️ it is very interesting to observe their behaviour. Never seen before a bird playing & laying on the neck. You are such a kind-hearted person ❤️
we had that here too with a magpie trying to get into a small jar feeder with a kind of PB for birds. he was to big to acces it normally but he figured a way out to get it eventually. you could just see him trying different ways and studying the feeder from diff angles and other birds.
To quell confusion, these are strictly speaking not magpies at all, despite the naming convention of them in Australia and New Zealand. They’re more a black and white raven or crow than a true magpie as per the species of black and white birds in the northern hemisphere they’re named after. They have a lot in common, but these birds are larger, sound off differently, and are awesome in different ways. Don’t wear a black and white hat in an area with a family of them that are unused to people. Cyclists will pay the price most especially.

It's said that these magpies were originally from Britain but due to the fact that they were a bit naughty they got sent to Aus in the 18th and 19th century
They also have the title of the world's angriest birds. They attack anyone that gets too close to their nests. It got so bad that the people who live around them gave them the nickname "Sky Orca".

I don't either. Doesn't mean we're not happy though. Most of us are ok on our own. Especially with our animals around.
Magpies, Crows, Ravens, and the like are very intelligent and curious birds. That first Magpie will have been watching you for a while and deciding if you were safe or not to say hello, its really something special to gain the trust of a wild creature, you are truly blessed.
Yes, you are that, Danielle. Glad you're around on this earth xx
Indeed🥰
It's true the crows, ravens, jays and other corvids are known for their intelligence around the world.... yet the Australian magpie's intellect has evolved completely independently of the corvids, since it's only distantly related and not part of the _corvidae_ family.

I love birds but would never have one as a pet and this is why. Should birds be pets? They are meant to fly. I don't think flying around your living room quite counts. It's a bit sad.
Those who don't are just scum💩
Exactly

@@xIntoThePitxThese aren't even corvids. Nor even magpies. They're butcherbirds.
@@JacobKernels it was a punnnn. Also, the hell? wdym they're butcher birds, they're clearly juvenile magpies like she said.

Magpies have intelligence on par with ravens. They're incredible birds. And she's an incredible person for helping them.
Their species actually cousins.
we had that here too with a magpie trying to get into a small jar feeder with a kind of PB for birds. he was to big to acces it normally but he figured a way out to get it eventually. you could just see him trying different ways and studying the feeder from diff angles and other birds.
Aussie magpies are amongst the most intelligent birds in the world , it speaks volumes of your character and compassion that they follow you around outside and find safety and happiness in your sanctuary , thank you for sharing a great heartfelt story in times of uncertainty.
@@pendragonxt3674 I have NEVER heard them called Sky Orcas. I have lived with them for many years, never been attacked!
"I don't socialize with anyone"
Damn, that really hit me hard.
Neither do I, I have no friends and no gf. My old friends are heavy drinkers and that isn't the life for me so I exist alone. I'm ok....btw I have my own pet magpie I reared from a baby, I saved him. Happy times together.
Yeah but 30 seconds later she says her FRIEND told her she should become a wildlife caretaker. Kinda goes against socializing with people huh
who does?
The girl talking
At 3 mins 14 seconds she says and I quote "my friend invited me to become a wildlife caregiver". I don't think she was talking about the bird inviting her
This random video in my feed made my day...tears I tell you....these Maggies rescued this woman...gave her love and a purpose....and having those magpie songs is so special...love seeing the kids playing in the yard like that too...amazing
I am an Aussie; I have a family of magpies come round every day for a snack and a talk and I look forward to them coming. We also live close to a hospital and one of them imitates the sound of an ambulance siren perfectly, they are great imitators and intelligent birds.
Same, they are such a beautiful bird and so intelligence. I love their songs in the morning and afternoons. Such a beautiful sound.
cool bro, I've got a butcherbird family that sounds very similar. The old male imitates the firetruck sirens, which, along with my malamutes howl, makes for a very interesting chorus.
@@BadDrivingHabitsOfAustralia You are right, very intelligence and beautiful sound, there seems to be more around our area this year, one of the young ones that has been coming around has just started imitating different sounds.
@@nexus3180 They are just amazing birds. I have a few around at my nans place. I might be gone for a few months and come back to visit my nan. But these birds remember me and come down to take some bread- my nan throws over for our geese. I know it's not good for them, so when I do some gardening and some of the worms are left on the surface (from the soil) The magpies come over and I throw one to them. But I know it's important for them to hunt for themselves. So I turn the sprinkler on. They come over for a drink and to take the worms left close to the surface. They thank me the next day with some beautiful song.
So- called Aussie! LMAOL!!
When a wild bird trusted in you, you're special, even if no human can see it
Down in our holiday home there are 28s ( Australian ring neck parrots ) everywhere and they have grown quite friendly! If you are patient enough the could even hop on your arm to get a nut
Pigeons count ? Because then I know a looooot of special people
Well what can humans see, we have eyes but they're only turned on if you know they're turned off
One of my fondest childhood memories is my grandfather feeding wild birds from his hands. Great video. Thank you for this uplift.
I see it she's beautiful
Knowing how magpies are, she’s safe. She’s got good bodyguards lol
i totally agree
@Yvonne Schoenrock realy that depends on the bird. Also, most diseases dont jump from birds to human. So releaxe Mrs. Schönrock (interesting name btw, If you didnt already know and it realy is your real name, it means: beautiful skirt 😁)
It is such a beautiful blessing that the two of you met each other. I know that you, fully, understand how intelligent they are and how special it is to have their absolute trust! Thank you for sharing this with us! ❤
I’m familiar with this wonderful lady from Australia. Her backyard is a gathering place for all the neighborhood birds. They all come to visit her and behave just like these adorable magpies. They know a kind hearted human when they see one. Amazing, isn’t she?
Tell her a nice american guy wants to meet her

The first magpie saw how lonely Danielle was, and said "We can cure this. Watch us!"
Right!!!! It just shows how much we could be 1 with nature if we choose to open up our souls.
Love your comment. Glad they took to her.
@@patriciacolombini6567 ME TOO
Stupid
The golden question would be, how on earth is she lonely!!
What wrong with the guys from Australia.
Those birds are definitely spoiled, I find Corvids fascinating, probably the most intelligent birds in the world. For wild birds like Magpies to develop this kind of trust with a human is truly remarkable.
Most of the 20 to 25 are okay, but that Corvid-19 looks like trouble.
Technically, the Australian magpie is not a corvid, but is in the group called butcher birds.
They seems to have also good eye sight and memory, because they still recognise her (by face?) even when she wears completely different clothes, which in my opinion is really cool!
Australian Magpies are not corvidae
i had rescued one crow once and he keep visiting me each week they are very inteligent bird and very caring
Incredible. You must have a special energy for these birds to trust so implicitly. Great story. Thanks for sharing. Cheers!
I'm not usually jealous of a person's life, but this? It changes everything.
Looks like a family of magpies has adopted a human.
I thought the same :D
One Magpie chose her and the whole swarm adopted her.
Sweet!
Sweet, touching and very lovely. Incredible smart birds.
@@jetsam666 She did say it was the father. Magpies are familial and one of the few animals capable of empathy. They have demonstrated the intelligence of around a 4-5 year old- which is pretty remarkable.

That's why she was burned in 1842
@I.M. Shirley Rongh I just had to look up the great emu war... I’m both surprised and unsurprised. Mostly because I was never expecting emus to try to take over the world and unsurprised because well it’s Australia and everything, even the rocks, are out to get you. Also 2020 happened so much unexpected things happened that I’m just rarely surprised anymore.
She could train them to overthrow the Australian government
Nice one Danielle. Wonderfully unique Australian birds. I absolutely love ’em, even in the Spring time. Great to see they have blessed you as you have blessed them. Go Pies!! ⚫️⚪️
The sound they make is enchanting yet horrifying all at the same time
Living in Australia, I'm used to hearing it in the morning as the sun comes up, and after many years and some travel overseas, it helps me know I'm home to hear that call.
@@caz1764 was just about to write the same thing. Heading home soon after 3.5 years away. Can't wait to hear that sound.
@@caz1764 yeah! I live the sound of Maggie's in the morning, since I've moved to Southern tasmania, we don't get Maggie's as far down as I am so I miss their sound. I've noticed though there is a small group in huonville the next biggish town so maybe they'll migrate further down.
It's like small dinosaurs :)
its one of the sounds i miss the most from living in australia
That just cracked me up when the bird supervised you washing the window.
The head-bob was slaying me. I couldn't stop laughing! 😂😂

Not when your getting swooped
Lovely heart warming video. I also enjoy the company of wild birds.
The fact that she could befriend a whole bunch of magpies by chance is such a fun blessing. I only know them for how insanely smart they are and territorial. Birds can really surprise you. I figured they were just kinda mean. Apparently they're not all bad ♡

Yes! All Magpies, All The Time.

I’d heard about how corvids recognize people who wronged them and teach their families to harass the perpetrator. It’s so sweet to see it the other way around: a magpie finding a good person and teaching all the others that this is a good human. ❤
These arent from the corvid family though, australian magpies are the only ones who arent related to other magpies over the world. Its still really nice to see tho!
@@ThyWeepingWillow Wow. They’re so intelligent that I never had any reason to question the idea they could be corvids. 😲
