What helped me if the popup thing didn’t work I shut down my computer held command, r and the power button and “loading startup options” should pop up and then options and your MacBook should pop up and you go to options and then you cracked ya Mac open.
What do you do when the reset password prompt never comes up? I am typing in the correct password, but it’s saying it isn’t correct and the prompt to change it isn’t coming up.

For those that this doesn’t work for…. Restart your Mac while holding the command and R keys to enter recovery mode. At the top of the screen once recovery mode opens, click on terminal. In the dialogue box that opens, type resetpassword (one word) and hit enter. It’ll ask you to choose a new password…. Do that…blah blah blah….reset your Mac. Log in with your new password. Done. Magic. 😘😘

Looks like Apple got smarter, older macOS versions used to allow password reset without asking for the Apple ID, which means that anyone can have access to your Mac, kinda renders the password useless

Nice Clear Video, DID NOT WORK. Even after restart. The only drop down message is “Password Hint”.
