When I get to the reset password pop up, it says “select volume to recover” yet there is nothing under it. There is no account to select. How do I reset if it isnt pulling it up for me?

Daniel, thank you for the video, I am trying to help my father in law with his MacBook, he picked up a virus and could not get into the system. Geek squad was able to wipe and reset the system. I am having an issue with trying to get into programs such as email and Facebook. I have internet (Tried google and able to navigate so I am on line) as for getting onto his email or FB accounts I am getting the (Passwords are locked), his prior passwords are not working... Suggestions?

You need to type it after clicking the utilities option you then type resetpassword without spacing

The issue ended up being a bug where no password being set would break and prompt you for a password that doesn't exist. If your computer has an Apple ID setup, look up the instructions on how to reset the password through the recovery environment.@@lucasf6873
fixed it, boot it into recovery mode and go from there

I bought this imac second hand. I set it up but did not trx my data from my old mac. I have no question mark and no amount of failed attempts at password will lock me out or produce a pop up. :/

Same. No question mark. Just 'user' 'Enter Password' and the 3 options to Sleep, Restart or Shut Down along the bottom. Dosen't help you I know, but bro., if you find an answer.... I'll post here if I find anything useful as well

What if Mac is NOT connected to WiFi? I can't see any icon to connect before password change procedure.
On boot-up click on command and R keys until the apple icon shows, then :
Go to “Utilities” in the Apple menu.
Select “Terminal.”
Type “resetpassword” (a single word), and click “Return.”
Select your user account.
Reset your password and click “Save.”
Ughh! None of these worked. There is no question mark on mine. After 3 failed attempts, I was locked out of trying for 1 minute. After another attempt, I was locked out for 5 minutes. After another attempt, I was locked out for 15 minutes. I have no option to restart. Only an option to cancel. I guess I'm a 1%er,

Same problem here , the Mac refuses to allow me to change my password, and there is no ? And if I put the wrong password in 3 or more times there is no pop up to allow me to change the password

Hi thanks for the feedback but it seems that it doesn’t work for me. I have a Mac Book Pro and as I am locked out and forgot my password and trying it do as to what your version to unlock, it doesn’t show on my screen to put the Apple ID and password reset . So it would be great if I can view another video where it will work best for me. I even tried putting my ‘Hint Pwd’ and it still tells me it’s incorrect after it says it’s the right one. This is really frustrating..

That does not happen on mine and I got it this year. I tried the hold down power key option to see if I can reset. That just asked for a key it never sent to me. So I will keep trying
I had the same issue but figured it out. Shut it down, then hold command-R and the power button all at once. Hit options, then go up to the utilities tab on top left(or whichever tab you find “terminal” in. Open up the terminal and ONLY type in passwordreset no spaces all lower case. Hit return and a window will come up. Hit deactivate Mac, it will go to a new window and you can simply reset using the options it provides, restart the computer and you’re good to go.

Old guy here. I set up my new Macbook Pro hastily and only did the fingerprint.....no password. Now I'm locked out. No question mark, no three tries, just nothing. Sure hope you respond to this.
If anyone else is dealing with this predicament, as I and this guy was, when you restart your MacBook, hold the power button down to open up more options, from here you will be prompted through a restart with your Apple ID, also customer service walked me through this in about 2 minutes, just give them a call if you hit a snag.

MacBook Pro 16 inch 2023, don’t even think I ever made a password but it’s asking for one at the login screen. There’s no question mark no matter how many times I restart the computer. And no window pops up no matter how many times I enter the wrong password.
