So just here to say THANK YOU!!! This worked for me ... MACBOOK PRO 14 Inch, 2021 (macOS Sonoma) Apple M1 Pro Shut down MacBook ... Reset to safe/ recovery mode (HOLDING DOWN POWER) ... Click Settings Icon ... I then had to Enter Apple ID (POP UP - Recovery Assistant) Then once done Apple ID ... Mouse to top Left of screen and find Open Terminal ... Type "Reset Password" ... Login into Apple ID again... Deactivate Mac (Deletes and resets all linked key chains) ... Type new Password ... Reset MacBook ... Type NEW PASSWORD into LOGIN SCREEN ... and was in!!! Hope this comment helps with the extra steps! Big thank you again!!!

I was worried that this wouldn’t work, but it did work. However some of the options are different. I just clicked on “forgot password” and it worked!
